Book Description
A wealthy American financier disappears on a
treasure hunt in an antique blimp. From Cuban
waters, the blimp drifts toward Florida with a
crew of dead men -- Soviet cosmonauts.
DIRK PITT discovers a shocking scheme: a

on the moon, a secret base they will defend at any
cost. Threatened in space, the Russians are about
to strike a savage blow in Cuba -- and only
DIRK PITT can stop them. From a Cuban torture
chamber to the cold ocean depths, Pitt is racing
to defuse an international conspiracy that

Customer Reviews:
Classic thriller.......2007-08-29
This is one of Cussler's best books. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day and a half!
Poor writing.......2007-05-22
A couple of independent recommendations of this author made me buy this book for my last flight. What a mistake! While the plot and the plot twists are quite good, the writing and characterization was downright awful. The characters were uniformly one-dimensional and at times I caught myself laughing out loud at the descriptions, so cliche-upon-cliche it was downright embarassing! It's about as credible as your worst James Bond movie. This will definitely be both my first and last Clive Cussler book.
Cyclops.......2007-04-01
Cussler keeps you glued to the page - learned things here I never imagined.
Action adventure.......2006-12-27
Another Dirk Pitt novel that entertains with lively dialogue and white knuckled adventure. Cussler does a good job of making each book stand alone so readers can pick up anywhere and not have to search for previous stories to catch up.
One of his best.......2006-08-22
Cyclops is the one Cussler book that makes me laugh out loud every time I read it. The other books have some dry humor, but the premise of this one is so out there, I mean there is a fight between the Americans and the Soviets on THE MOON. Aside from that, the premise is actually realy cool and this one is a very interesting read.

Customer Reviews:
More Amazonian bungling!.......2006-11-18
Yet again the folks at Amazon have bungled matters. The other "review" of this book is in fact a review of (or a puff for) the Penn series of translations of Greek tragedy, not of Euripides' "Selected Fragmentary Plays," a scholarly edition offering Greek texts, English translations, and detailed notes on several of Euripides' fragmentary plays. It should also noted that the book in question is the recently published---and long-awaited---second volume of a work whose first volume appeared in 1995. Eventually, there will be a Loeb Classical Library edition of the major fragments of Euripides, but it is unlikely to replace these volumes of Collard et al., for their very full notes will remain invaluable.
a return to classics.......2003-04-02
I went to Columbia, with the most prominent 'great books' curriculum still in existence. 25 years later, I'm finding myself re-reading and discussing many of the titles. The Penn Greek Drama series is a handsome library of new translations that give fresh takes on the classics. It's useful to have Euripides on the shelf when you return home from the recent bravura performance by Fiona Shaw as Medea--it settled an argument too on how it 'originally' ended.

still and fashion photography re-invented.......2005-08-18
If you're looking for a book of a photographer who single-mindedly captures fashion, portraiture, landscape and still life flawlessly with his unique style, Albert Watson's Cyclops is the book for you. Included in the book is a brief overview of Watson the man who since birth has had only sight in one eye and has been given the gift of dazzling every other eye known to man. In the interior you can indulge yourself with black and white photographs that can instantly give rise to a feeling of sensuality, pain and pleasure. Whether it be celebrities or artifacts Watson manipulates the subject to create a vision only he can see and we can enjoy and recognize as his signature style. The book is a bit small but beautifully made.
Engrossing........2002-04-26
When I first saw the book, I was transfixed. I must have spent quite a number of hours going through the pages, standing up, the world dissolving around me. My particular favorite is one picture of Gary Oldman lying in a coffin. It captured him perfectly. I don't know much about photography, but the beauty of his works is that it can be understood and loved by anyone - there is a human association within every shot. For a while I was reluctant to buy it - the price was a bit too much for me, but I kept on returning to the bookstore to see it, taking a half an hour bus ride each time at the other side of the city. I grew restless when I didn't take the ritual visit. Eventually I did get it - and I finally feel complete. He captured perfection.
Ultimate Black & White Images.......1999-12-22
Albert Watson's images in this book are quite simply some of the best images of Black & White photography in any book! They are technically perfect and arrestingly beautiful. His images are powerful, moving, creative, and always well composed. Furthermore, the printing in this book is one of the best I've ever seen.
If you appriciate masterful black & white images you would probably be happy with this book even if you had paid 5 times what this costs!
This book is truly a must-have for anyone who appriciates great photography
An unsurmountable piece of work by Albert Watson........1998-11-20
Cyclops is more than a vision, but some of the most emotionally moving frames one will ever look upon. He is a genius and can capture beauty, pain, anger, and delight all in one single image.

Customer Reviews:
Great stories!!.......2006-02-26
This is a great item for the Dirk Pitt fans that are trying to buy all the books. I do think that it is a rather random combination, because they aren't in sequential order, but what the hey?
5-Stars for Cyclops...4 1/2 for Flood Tide.......2001-06-20
I was momentarily surprised when I saw this book at my local bookstore because I thought for a split second that I was looking at a brand new Cussler novel...but the wind quickly left my sails as I realized that I had already purchased and read both of these books and enjoyed them. But I LOVE novels that combine more than one book, and I couldn't help myself, and I picked it up right then and there and proceeded to re-read these incredible yarns.
I'll start with 'Cyclops'. A much earlier Dirk Pitt story than 'Flood Tide' and in MY opinion, ranks as one of Cussler's greatest adventures. Taking the reader from the depths of the sea to Communist Cuba, to the very surface of the moon, I can't think of ANY yarn that takes you on such a tremendous journey as this one. Mixing adventure with a small dose of near-future science fiction, Cussler never once lets up on the entertaining action. The Russians attempt to hijack the space shuttle...the President is informed of a private American moon colony, one that has been there for YEARS, and was NOT funded by NASA...and the race to collect the secrets learned from this amazing feat is on. Who will win? As they say, getting there is half the fun, especially when Dirk Pitt is involved. Do yourself a GIGANTIC favor and read 'Cyclops' and you will be forever greatful for the hours of pure escapism entertainment.
'Flood Tide' is a more recent Pitt adventure, and comes on the heels of a tragedy that Dirk experiences in 'Shock Wave'. I recommend reading 'Shock Wave' first just so you'll know WHY Dirk is in the frame of mind he starts out with in 'Flood Tide'. With that out of the way, Dirk, ever the magnet for situations that require his expertise otherwise earth-shaking consequences result, swims right into yet another hornets nest of trouble. This time in the Pacific Northwest when he helps an Asian woman escape from forced slavery, and returns to assist the others who were not as lucky. This unlocks a conspiracy which finds Dirk & Company in the deep South helping avert a disaster which could ignite the deaths of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of American lives. While exciting and well-written, I place 'Flood Tide' near the bottom of the Dirk Pitt adventures I have read (which are all of them at last count). Just keep in mind that Cussler's least entertaining books are more fun than most other writers best material. Either way, do NOT pass up an opportunity to read about Dirk Pitt...easily one of the greatest characters in adventure fiction since the invention of the written language.

Book Description
This is an introduction to Euripides' "Cyclops", the only example of satyric drama to have survived complete into the modern world. The work gives an historical and analytical account of the genre, tracing its origins, development and decine. It examines the place of satyrs in the religious imagination and practice of the Greeks, and the significance of Euripides' divergence from the Homeric model. The commentary pays close attention to problems of text, language and interpretation.

EYE IN THE SKY
Cyclops One: America's most advanced airborne laser system. Capable of taking out a dozen missiles and warplanes from three hundred miles away, it will change the face of combat forever -- perhaps rendering war itself obsolete. Until the plane carrying it vanishes in a storm over the Canadian Rockies.
With the specter of sabotage -- or something worse -- looming over the entire operation, America's top investigators are called onto the case. The best is Special Agent Andy Fisher, whose irreverent manner and unorthodox techniques have gained him the reputation as both a genius and a wild card within the FBI. As Fisher's investigation deepens, more questions emerge about the laser, the hyper-secretive private agency that developed it, and the true motives of those involved in the Cyclops One project -- a conspiracy that may end with the beginning of World War III....

Customer Reviews:
postmodern gibberish.......2004-11-13
Having been an editor and writer for 40 years, I wouls have to rate this book as one of the worst I have ever read, except maybe for Deep Black, which the author collaborated with Stephen Coonts. DeFelice is either a product of the dumbing down of American education, or is merely catering to the techno-nerds who couldn't tell an oratorio from an opera. The wrting is so devoid of cogent plot lines, developed characters, and continuity, that it might as well have been written for people who are more comfortable with pictures than words. This book is truly the result of someone imbued with the postmodern notion of deconstruction, i.e. that words have no meaning. It is nothing more than a listing of high-tech gadgetry (real or imagined) that would display itself in mindless video games. It is definitely a waste of money and time.
Craft and Style.......2004-07-29
Jim DeFelice is a writer with craft and style. His character development goes beyond the pedestrian and trite descriptions of other action authors. He puts you in the pocket of FBI agent Andy Fisher as his right-brain analyses keep his cohorts two steps behind his cloud of cigarette smoke. Makes you want to have a scotch and a smoke with him - just don't offer to play barroom darts!
I first discovered DeFelice's writing in his opening four paragraphs of 'Wolf Flight' in Coonts' 'Victory - On The Attack'. His opening page of 'Wolf Flight' took me over with his striking literary beauty. What clarity and significance of writing! It's the kind of writing that English professors should assign as Summer reading to incoming freshmen. The kind of writing perfection that the book critics miss every day, to their eternal shame.
Put DeFelice on your Author Search. You won't be disappointed.
Don't miss the thrills!.......2003-10-20
What Arthur Conan Doyle did for detective fiction, Jim DeFelice does for the techno-thriller. And CYCLOPS ONE certainly lives up to expectations. Andy Fisher, the flip, funny hero of the novel, drives this nail-biter like a runaway freight train. DeFelice fans get ready for the ride of your life!
EDGE OF YOUR SEAT EXCITEMENT!.......2003-10-04
DeFelice pulls out all the stops in his techno arsenal creating vivid characters amid up to date world events. His chain-smoking FBI agent, Fisher, is one of the most vivid heroes in the genre. I couldn't put it down.

Book Description
Destructive patterns of Amazonian evolution are now endangering Northern Brazil--driven by the gold rush and demographic and economic forces from the South.
The Forest Frontier assesses whether the Northern Amazonian states can avoid the same pressures and problems that affect the peoples and environments of the South.
Relatively untouched but on the brink of development, Roraima is of special environmental interest because of its extensive savannas and varied forests--the home of some of the largest and most diverse groups of indigenous Indians. In a detailed and original analysis, the contributors present a critical assessment of the nature and pace of agricultural advance into Roraima, provide precise rates for deforestation and examine the reasons for destruction. The book presents a range of strategies to cope with the inevitable development to come.
