Until now, very little about the recent history of the Mapuche, Chile’s largest indigenous group, has been available to English-language readers. Courage Tastes of Blood helps to rectify this situation. It tells the story of one Mapuche communityâNicolás AilÃo, located in the south of the countryâacross the entire twentieth century, from its founding in the resettlement process that followed the military defeat of the Mapuche by the Chilean state at the end of the nineteenth century. Florencia E. Mallon places oral histories gathered from community members over an extended period of time in the 1990s in dialogue with one another and with her research in national and regional archives. Taking seriously the often quite divergent subjectivities and political visions of the community’s members, Mallon presents an innovative historical narrative, one that reflects a mutual collaboration between herself and the residents of Nicolás AilÃo.
Mallon recounts the land usurpation Nicolás AilÃo endured in the first decades of the twentieth century and the community’s ongoing struggle for restitution. Facing extreme poverty and inspired by the agrarian mobilizations of the 1960s, some community members participated in the agrarian reform under the government of socialist president Salvador Allende. With the military coup of 1973, they suffered repression and desperate impoverishment. Out of this turbulent period the Mapuche revitalization movement was born. What began as an effort to protest the privatization of community lands under the military dictatorship evolved into a broad movement for cultural and political recognition that continues to the present day. By providing the historical and local context for the emergence of the Mapuche revitalization movement, Courage Tastes of Blood offers a distinctive perspective on the evolution of Chilean democracy and its rupture with the military coup of 1973.

A pathbreaking contribution to Latin American testimonial literature, When a Flower Is Reborn is activist Rosa Isolde Reuque Paillalef’s chronicle of her leadership within the Mapuche indigenous rights movement in Chile. Part personal reflection and part political autobiography, it is also the story of Reuque’s rediscovery of her own Mapuche identity through her political and human rights activism over the past quarter century. The questions posed to Reuque by her editor and translator, the distinguished historian Florencia Mallon, are included in the text, revealing both a lively exchange between two feminist intellectuals and much about the crafting of the testimonial itself. In addition, several conversations involving Reuque’s family members provide a counterpoint to her story, illustrating the variety of ways identity is created and understood.
A leading activist during the Pinochet dictatorship, Reuqueâa woman, a Catholic, and a Christian Democratâoften felt like an outsider within the male-dominated, leftist Mapuche movement. This sense of herself as both participant and observer allows for Reuque’s trenchant, yet empathetic, critique of the Mapuche ethnic movement and of the policies regarding indigenous people implemented by Chile’s post-authoritarian government. After the 1990 transition to democratic rule, Reuque collaborated with the government in the creation of the Indigenous Development Corporation (CONADI) and the passage of the Indigenous Law of 1993. At the same time, her deepening critiques of sexism in Chilean society in general, and the Mapuche movement in particular, inspired her to found the first Mapuche feminist organization and participate in the 1996 International Women’s Conference in Beijing. Critical of the democratic government’s inability to effectively address indigenous demands, Reuque reflects on the history of Mapuche activism, including its disarray in the early 1990s and resurgence toward the end of the decade, and relates her hopes for the future.
An important reinvention of the testimonial genre for Latin America’s post-authoritarian, post-revolutionary era, When a Flower Is Reborn will appeal to those interested in Latin America, race and ethnicity, indigenous people’s movements, women and gender, and oral history and ethnography.

It is co-published with the Americas Society as one of two unprecedented anthologies appearing in trilingual format. Editor Cecilia Vicuna is a Chilean poet and author of UNRAVELLING WORDS AND THE WEAVING OF WATER (Graywolf). Translator John Bierhorst is the author and translator of CANTARES MEXICANOS and FOUR MASTERWORKS OF AMERICAN INDIAN LITERATURE.

Chilean Indian poetry.......2000-05-31
John Bierhorst, the translator of this volume, is a translator whose work I trust. In this bi- and tri-lingual text, he has justified my confidence in him.
The poets translated in the volume have a varied amount of "Indian-ness" - some speak the Indian language of the group with which they identify, some do not. The poems themselves range from poems that show a non-Spanish aesthetic to those that are openly "Spanish" in some sense. For example, a poem by Jaime Luis Huenun is titled "After Reading So Much Cesar Vallejo", and three poems of Graciela Huinao remind me of the sparseness of haiku.
My favorite of the poets in Elicura Chihuailaf whose poems center around blue - a color with strong ties to the Indian culture. These poems are perhaps the most Indian, but the poems are universal in the depiction of humanity and its relationship to the rest of nature while being accessible and particular in terms of images.
These poems are well worth your time.

Amazing book about Mapuche shamanism. The book challenges so many stereotypes about gender, sexuality and spirituality. She tells the story from her experience as well as from an academic point of view.

Great information about a little-known history.......2001-08-13
Growing up in Louisiana, I had heard various stories about Bernardo de Galvez and his role in aiding the Americans during the Revolution. John Caughey explains it all in this well-researched text, including many incidents and facts that surprised me. For instance, it has been documented that the English planned an attack on New Orleans during the American Revolution and would have had not the Spanish attacked their forts at Manchac and Baton Rouge first. Genealogists with ties to the American Revolutionary battles in Louisiana will also enjoy this book. The text becomes a bit tedious due to the scholarly nature, but that's a minor point. The trials, tribulations and accomplishments of this little-known American hero are sure to delight all readers.

This is one of the books that got my grandsons to look forward to being read to nightly. It's exciting, and puts you right in Revolutionary War times. Who knew that the Spanish helped George Washington behind the world's back--an important fact that all Hispanic children should realize. But more than that, it's a fun adventure.
