    Book Description

This book offers new topics and new perspectives on the economic history of Argentina before the 1930 Depression. It focuses on the evolution of early industrialization in a country primarily associated with cattle-ranching and agriculture, and single-mindedly characterized as a case of a successful export economy. Taking an original approach, the book cross-examines traditional economic issues such as production and finances, and new cultural patterns, such as consumption, the role of women, paternalism, and ideology.

The first years of Argentina’s industrialization, from the 1870s to the 1920s, coincided with a time of great innovation, a brisk turn from tradition, and quick modernization. This book shows that industry not only helped Argentina’s economy along, but spearheaded its modernization. It challenges the long-lasting “canonical version” that industry was a victim of a capital market and a state extremely hostile to manufacturing. Access to financing for industrial endeavors was much easier than previously thought, while the state supported industry through tariffs.

      Book Description

Historically, Argentina has been one of the strongest, most independent countries of Latin America. It seems odd then, that Argentina should develop a foreign policy during the post-Cold War period characterized by a strong allegiance to the United States. However, the end of the bilateral world left the U.S. foreign policy much less focused at the same time that Argentine foreign policy became much more focused. For Argentina, domestic changes-especially economic and political instability-encouraged the government to redefine U.S.-Argentine relations from prior patterns of conflict and distrust, in order to improve the country's international image and attract foreign support. Covering two decades of history, this book seeks to explain for the first time, the reasons for the emergence of a strong friendship between the United States and Argentina. Beginning with the history of U.S.-Argentine relations up until the end of the Cold War, the text then considers changes in:
      The international political system
The nature of domestic politics and their influence on foreign policy-making in both countries
      Recent issues in U.S.-Argentine relations
The United States and Argentina sets out to explore the nature of U.S.-Argentinean relations by concentrating on the issues which have shaped and stood out in the dialogue between the two countries and how this shifting relationship has been played out in international institutions. This will be the fourth in our Contemporary Inter-American Relations Series.

        Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on bakery products, bread, biscuits, and cakes in Argentina face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying bakery products, bread, biscuits, and cakes to Argentina? How important is Argentina compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of bakery products, bread, biscuits, and cakes vary from one country of origin to another in Argentina? On the supply side, Argentina also exports bakery products, bread, biscuits, and cakes. Which countries receive the most exports from Argentina? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for bakery products, bread, biscuits, and cakes in Argentina. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. Icon Group has developed a proprietary methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for bakery products, bread, biscuits, and cakes for those countries serving Argentina via exports, or supplying from Argentina via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for ac electric motors with output exceeding 37.5 w for those countries serving Argentina via exports, or supplying from Argentina via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Argentina fits into the world market for imported and exported ac electric motors with output exceeding 37.5 w. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Argentina in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Argentina is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Argentina compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

2 out of 5 stars A bit too much attitude.......2007-07-10

The photographs were excellent -- just looking at them makes you want to know and like these people.

The narrative brought me up short. I'm one of those (apparently) rare individuals who believe American values aren't so bad that we should feel grateful to foreigners who come here and teach us how to live.

Most Americans feel a certain sense of good fortune for having been born in the United States. The narrative in this book leaves the impression that "Americanos" don't think America is so great, have no intention of "being assimilated" (in other words, becoming Americans), and feel they by rights already own the place anyway.

I'm no xenophobe, but this book left me with a strong bad impression. Maybe I should have given it 5 stars. Maybe it's a book every American ought to read carefully.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tapestry of Latino Life in the United States.......2002-04-10

As the largest growing ethnic group in the United States, Latinos/Hispanics have made inroads in many fields due to their strength, organization, and family values. Although differences among Latinos are as common as differences in other groups distinguished by a common language root (e.g., Slavs, Arabs, Romance languages speakers, etc.) the common struggle of all nationalities that are found in this classification is the same: success.

Edited by one of the greatest activists and advocates for Latinos all around the world, actor Edward James Olmos, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a collection of beautiful photographs and stories of Latinos throughout the United States. From Mexican-Americans in California to Puerto Ricans in New York City, Olmos and a team of other editors have produced a book that perfectly and respectfully captures the beauty and realities of Latinos all around. Available in hardbound and paperback editions, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a must have for Latino/Hispanic Studies students/enthuasists or for anyone who tuly appreciates cultural photography. The book, which was accompanied by a U.S. museum tour of photographs featured in the book, is truly a milestone for a community that has risen from a long sleep and awakened to become the most dynamic and promising group in the Americas.

If I can use two words to describe this book, I would use "moving" and "beautiful." It's a must have book in your library, especially if you're Latino.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Glory beyond Words.......1999-11-21

After being honored with the presence of Mr. Olmos at the Penn State University this past November, I have only grown to respect what our culture has done and continues to do. This book exemplifies what we were, what we are, and what we are to become. I have only pride in my heart and a joy in my sould for what we have been capable of doing in this the United States of America. I hope that everyone has a chance to look at this book and, like I did, see themselves in these pages.

                        Product Description

Three friends. One dream. Nowhere to go but up. When Rusty Johnson, Eddie Olmos, and Joey Zagarino met in high school in 1962, the sky was the limit and rock ‘n’ roll stardom was a record deal away. These three friends forged a life-long friendship that would take them through triumph and tragedy, victory and defeat, success and failure.
Along the way, they would meet and be influenced by some of the most famous people in the world: Jim Morrison, Robert F. Kennedy, Milton Berle, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Wolfman Jack, Bill Cosby, Orson Welles, Sonny Bono, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Peter Lawford, Kim Novak, Sammy Davis, Jr., Don Johnson, Paul Newman, Michael Landon, Frank Zappa, and many others. With these luminary characters as the cast, the hard streets of Hollywood as the background, and the raucous music of the sixties as the soundtrack, the boys will face insurmountable obstacles, experience hilarious hijinks, and have unbelievable adventures—leading one to the Academy Awards, one to finding his passion, and one to his demise.
This is not only the story of three dreamers, this is a tale about all of us. It is a true tale that shows that success—and life—is about rolling with the punches and taking it one step at a time.

                          Book Description

"Within the pages of this book, we truly get a candid look at war, patriotism, fear, and love. . . . My culture will benefit immensely from these strong and compelling stories, but my hope is that all cultures of this incredible society we call America will read the oral histories of Chicano Vietnam veterans and their families and learn."

—Edward James Olmos, from the Foreword

One of the most decorated groups that served in the Vietnam War, Chicanos fought and died in numbers well out of proportion to their percentage of the United States' population. Yet despite this, their wartime experiences have never received much attention in either popular media or scholarly studies. To spotlight and preserve some of their stories, this book presents substantial interviews with Chicano Vietnam veterans and their families that explore the men's experiences in combat, the war's effects on the Chicano community, and the veterans' postwar lives.

Lea Ybarra groups the interviews topically to bring out different aspects of the Chicano vets' experiences. In addition to discussing their involvement in and views on the Vietnam War, the veterans also reflect on their place in American society, American foreign policy, and the value of war. Veterans from several states and different socioeconomic classes give the book a broad-based perspective, which Ybarra frames with sociological material on the war and its impact on Chicanos.

                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A powerful gathering of veterans' voices.......2006-01-14

Most of "Vietnam Veteranos: Chicanos Recall the War," by Lea Ybarra, consists of personal testimonies of veterans. In the preface it is noted that the book is drawn from "interviews with Chicano Vietnam veterans from all branches of the service and from many backgrounds and geographic areas." The author further notes that the service dates of the veterans in the book range from 1965 to 1972. The interviewees represent many different jobs, including helicopter gunner, airborne infantryman, radio equipment operator, infantry company commander, medical corpsman, machine gunner, and forward observer. The book also features a foreword by Edward James Olmos.

The main text is divided into three main sections: an introductory section, a second section containing the veterans' oral histories, and a concluding section entitled "Overview of Issues Discussed by the Veterans." The second section (pages 13 to 206) is the largest; the oral testimonies are grouped under the following thematic headings: "Idealism, Patriotism, and Politics"; "A Matter of Conscience," which focuses on the experiences of conscientious objectors; "Psychological and Medical Issues in the Aftermath of Vietnam"; and "The Impact of War on Family." The testimonies raise many significant issues: concerns over Agent Orange, the impact of the antiwar movement, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, the danger of "friendly fire," the depiction of the war in motion pictures, and more. A number of veterans note the irony that as Chicanos they physically resembled the Vietnamese. Also addressed is the vilification many veterans experienced upon their return home, and in particular their being labeled as "baby killers."

A number of the veterans discuss atrocities committed in wartime, and there are accounts of grisly violence and horrific injuries. One testimony offers fascinating details about the process by which one is recognized as a conscientious objector. There is also a very moving testimony by a mother who lost her 22-year old son in the war, and a joint interview with a veteran and his wife. Another standout testimony creates a vivid portrait of the demanding role of a wartime casualty reporter. The veterans offer many different attitudes towards the war and their experiences, ranging from "I'd do it all over again" to "It was a waste of time"; one veteran simply, and eloquently, states, "I survived. I made it." This powerful and thought-provoking book is a valuable addition to Vietnam War studies.

This book was an intresting read, but I thought it could have focused more on general scholarships for all students, rather than scholarships for students who go to specific colleges.
