Book Description

The main goals of this text are to develop students' appreciation for the molecular world and stress the fundamental role it plays in our daily lives. It also strives to help students understand the major scientific, technological, and environmental issues affecting our society. To accomplish these goals, the author has made extensive efforts to clearly identify and explain connections between the molecular world and macroscopic world as well as between principles and applications. The Third Edition of CHEMISTRY IN FOCUS adds new pedagogy and technological resources, such as OWL for Liberal Arts, that further enhance learning and appreciation of the molecular world.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for an Introductory Level.......1999-05-12

It is a good book for people starting to learn about chemistry. It teaches the basic principles and more advanced effects on life, without going to much into detail, and therefore does not confuse the reader.

          Book Description

What does matter look like at the molecular and atomic level? Why are leaves green? Why do colored fabrics fade upon repeated exposure to sunlight? Why does a pencil leave a mark when dragged across a sheet of paper? All of these basic questions have molecular answers that teach and illustrate chemical principles. Nivaldo Tro introduces each concept with a thought experiment, then develops the chemical principles and concepts involved in a molecular understanding of the experiment. Once students have grasped the basic concepts, they are introduced to consumer applications and environmental problems related to the concepts. Mathematical aspects of chemistry are optional.

            Book Description

From the opening example to the closing chapter, the Second Edition Update of CHEMISTRY IN FOCUS maintains a consistent focus on explaining the connections between the macroscopic world (what we can see) and the molecular world (what we cannot see). With multi-part images that feature photographs of everyday objects or processes and magnifications that reveal the molecules and the atoms responsible, the book's "molecular vision" art program is truly unique. In addition, Tro develops students' appreciation for the fundamental role the molecular world plays in our daily lives and an understanding of how major scientific and technological issues affect our society. With coverage of global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, drugs, consumer products, and even the infant field of nanotechnology, the book is always contemporary, always fascinating. This Update includes CNN Videos free with every new copy of the text and is now paperbound at the same low price.

              Book Description

In 1994, while nations everywhere stood idly by, 800,000 people were slaughtered in eight weeks in Rwanda. Arriving as U.S. Ambassador to neighboring Burundi a few weeks later, Bob Krueger began drawing international attention to the genocide also proceeding in Burundi, where he sought to minimize the killing and to preserve its fledgling democratic government from destruction by its own army. From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi is a compelling eyewitness account of both a horrific and persistent genocide and of the ongoing efforts of many courageous individuals to build a more just society.

Krueger and his wife Kathleen graphically document the slaughter occurring all around them, as well as their repeated efforts to get the U.S. government and the international community to take notice and take action. Bob Krueger reconstructs the events of the military coup that precipitated the Burundi genocide and describes his efforts to uncover the truth by digging up graves and interviewing survivors. In straightforward and powerful language, Kathleen Krueger recounts her family's experience living amid civil war, including when she faced down a dozen AK-47-wielding African soldiers to save the life of a household worker.

From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi shines a piercing light on a genocide that has gone largely unreported, and identifies those responsible for it. It also offers hope that as the truth emerges and the perpetrators are brought to account, the people of Burundi will at last achieve peace and reconciliation.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2007-10-13

This book is well written and is very thorough. A must read for those interested in the realpolitik and history of Burundi and the internal conflict between Tutsi's and Hutus in the central African country. This book also provides great detail about the role and responsibilities of an Ambassador working on behalf of the United States and the ideological differences held within the State Department about the proper role the United States should play in Burundi.

5 out of 5 stars A forgotten genocide, still relevant today.......2007-09-06

This book is both harrowing and inspiring. Ambassador Krueger details how a dictator with an army used violence on his own countrymen to subvert a nascent democracy. Krueger's struggle to gain international attention for the genocide-in-progress reveals flaws in various national & international institutions -- flaws that still require scrutiny and improvement today. Mrs. Krueger's chapters vividly make the point that foreign service a family matter. Both authors provide moving portraits of individuals who worked in their own quiet or overt ways to stop the genocide; the ordinary-extraordinary courage of these people reminds one of Paul Rusesabagina's story. The Kruegers' conclusions about how a nation can move forward after genocide and autocracy offer hope for Burundi and much matter for thought for other areas of the world.

                  Book Description

How many of mankind's greatest achievements would not have come to fruition were it not for blind ambition? Our World In Focus is a phenomenally ambitious book that, via some of the most striking and thought-provoking photographs ever taken, aims to highlight the current state of mankind's relationship with the environment, and pose the question, "Where do we go from here?" The project is the brainchild of The Earth Pledge Foundation, a trust established in 1991 by Theodore Kheel in support of the Rio Earth Summit. Calling on the globally celebrated talents of Magnum Photos, the book will raise awareness and funds in time for the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in September 2002.

                    Book Description

In the tradition of the bestselling Ophelia Speaks, a collection of provocative essays by teenage girls of colorMy Sisters' Voices is a passionate and poignant collection of writings from teenage girls of African American, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, and biracial backgrounds. With candor and grace, they speak out on topics that are relevant not only to themselves and their peers but to anyone who is raising, teaching, or nurturing young women of color. As adolescents, women, and minorities, these young authors represent a demographic that has had no voice of its own, a group often spoken for but rarely given the opportunity to be heard. Now these young women have a chance to stand up and be counted, to present their own unique perspectives in fresh and astonishing ways. Here you'll find a Native American girl writing about the bumps in her relationship with her best friend, who's white; a Korean American girl who wishes she could help her mother understand that it's okay to socialize with boys as well as girls; and a biracial girl who feels she must be the designated spokesperson for blacks when she's around whites, for whites when she's around blacks, and for biracial people around everyone. These personal and inspiring stories about family, friendship, sex, love, poverty, loss, and oppression make My Sisters' Voices essential reading for young women of all backgrounds.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2005-07-28

Ms. Jacob provides a much needed forum for the voices of young women of color to be heard. The book is well-suited for use by both high school and college courses, but is written in a style that would also appeal to any young woman of color as well as those who are involved with them as parents, teachers and friends. The stories are both personal and inspiring. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Teen Book Clubs or Women's Studies courses!.......2002-05-02

As a former professor of psychology and women's studies and current director of a center for girls in NYC, I would like to say this book is a must-read. For all those who have lamented the "white" slant on the information that is available about teen girls' issues, this book fills a void. Iris Jacobs weaves together essays, poems, and stories with an engaging style that is both sophisticated and accessible. I think this book is a wonderful choice for teen book clubs and a must for women's studies courses.

                    4 out of 5 stars Iris Jacob's collection rocks!!.......2002-04-05

Great collection for youth girls and younger women of color. It stands as a girl of color version of "Yell-Oh Girls," an equally empowering and loaded collection of writings by teen and young adult Asian Pacific American women. Buy this book for your little sister!

The subordination, suppression, and silencing of bilingual students' voices and their communities by their educational system came under scrutiny at the end of the twentieth century. This book provides a forum for students' voices by examining some of the factors that promote the silencing of voice in Latino/a high school students thus submersing them in the culture of silence. Its significance rests on the ability to draw out, explore, and document how Latino/a students perceive their cultural and linguistic reality; the presentation of curricular and methodological approaches and alternatives to promote the emergence and legitimatization of students' voices; and its insight into and revelation of the ways shared teacher/student experiences, languages, and cultures can shape and impact both classroom relations and the emergence of voice.

"A groundbreaking volume of social science research that provides us with the missing presence of adolescent Latina girls in research on the family, institutional barriers, and support. A must read in Latina/o Studies!"
—Mary Romero, author of Maid in the USA

"Denner and Guzman bring together research that counters with data revealing that young Latinas are successfully negotiating challenges they encounter."
                      —Hispanic Link Weekly Report

Latinas are now the largest minority group of girls in the country. Yet the research about this group is sparse, and there is a lack of information to guide studies, services or education for the rapidly growing Latino population across the U.S. The existing research has focused on stereotypical perceptions of Latinas as frequently dropping out of school, becoming teen mothers, or being involved with boyfriends in gangs.

Latina Girls brings together cutting edge research that challenges these stereotypes. At the same time, the volume offers solid data and suggestions for practical intervention for those who study and work to support this population. It highlights the challenges these young women face, as well as the ways in which they successfully negotiate those challenges. The volume includes research on Latinas and their relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners; academics; career goals; identity; lifelong satisfaction; and the ways in which they navigate across cultures and gender roles.

Latina Girls is the first book to pull together research on the overall strengths and strategies that characterize Latina adolescents' lives in the U.S. It will be of key interest and practical use to those who study and work with Latina youth.

5 out of 5 stars Meaningful Insights on Reality of Latina Teens.......2006-09-18

This work includes a broad range of research on the current realities of Latina teens in the U.S. I found several of the articles to be very insightful and enlightening. "Latina Adolescent Girls" should help policymakers and service providers design programs to support Latina teens, and by extension, Latinos in America. This kind of positive scholarship is essential as more and more of America becomes defined by a bi-cultural reality, in schools, workplaces and other settings. This book should contribute to better understanding and policymaking that affects America's new majority minority.

                        Book Description

Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities is an interdisciplinary project that weaves ethnographic interviewing with the analysis of texts and material culture to study the intersection of gayness with Latinidad. Unlike other academic treatments of the subject matter, it grounds its argument in an ethnoracial context and takes as point of departure that what needs to be studied explained is gayness not Latinidad. The book argues that gayness is a social formation structured by the racial distinction between blackness and whiteness in the United States and that, as such, the formation gayness is not racially or nationally innocent. Thus, Latinidad, thoroughly shaped by mythologies of racial syncretism, provides a perfect contrast in teasing out the racial undergirding of American gayness. Ultimately Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities claims that the so-called conflict between Latino identity and gayness is not the result of traditional values in Latino cultures ( a played out euphemism for retrograde) but an ethnoracial conflict in as much as the status of gayness does not simply regulate sexual but ethnoracial life as well.

                          Book Description

The strength of U.S. Hispanic churches is an untold story documented in Emerging Voices, Urgent Choices: Essays on Latino/a Religious Leadership. In this pioneering volume, experts from various disciplines examine the remarkable contribution of Hispanic churches to U.S. society and the challenges their leaders face in serving the country's growing Latino population.

Chapters analyze success stories in Latino/a ministry, specific issues for Catholic leadership and Protestant denominations, and the political and community-serving activities of diverse congregations.

Together, the essays demonstrate how Hispanic churches of every denomination are generating social capital in neglected communities. The book updates previous research on religion that largely ignores U.S. Latino/as, and adds a new dimension to Latino Studies scholarship by recognizing the important role that religion plays in Hispanic life.

                            Book Description

"This is the first major look at the lives of these ranch workers.... [It] will add greatly to the literature on ranch life in South Texas."

—Bruce S. Cheeseman, Consulting Archivist and Historian, King Ranch, Inc.

Founded before the Civil War, the King and Kenedy Ranches have become legendary for their size, their wealth, and their endless herds of cattle. A major factor in the longevity of these ranches has always been the loyal workforce of vaqueros (Mexican and Mexican American cowboys) and their families. Some of the vaquero families have worked on the ranches through five or six generations.

In this book, Jane Clements Monday and Betty Bailey Colley bring together the voices of these men and women who make ranching possible in the Wild Horse Desert. From 1989 to 1995, the authors interviewed more than sixty members of vaquero families, ranging in age from 20 to 93. Their words provide a panoramic view of ranch work and life that spans most of the twentieth century.

The vaqueros and their families describe all aspects of life on the ranches, from working cattle and doing many kinds of ranch maintenance to the home chores of raising children, cooking, and cleaning. The elders recall a life of endless manual labor that nonetheless afforded the satisfaction of jobs done with skill and pride. The younger people describe how modernization has affected the ranches and changed the lifeways of the people who work there.

The best way to learn history is from the mouths of those who lived it, and enjoying the experiences of the King Ranch Kinenos and the vaqueros of the Kenedy Ranch through their unadorned, first-person accounts puts the reader right back at the last fringes of the Old West period. Indian attacks, raids by Pancho Villa and forays by the Union and the Confederacy forces disrupt but do not change the tradition rich life of the Hispanic cowboy. Loyal until death, theirs was a life of service, duty, and honor. This is a can't-miss read for fans of Texana, Hispanic history, and ranching life.

Latino's increasing numbers and their uncertain voting behaviors have enticed Democrats and Republicans to actively court this demographic group, seeking their partisan identification. Through an in-depth interview with campaign strategists, a thematic content analysis of Latino-oriented television advertisements, and a survey of Latino citizens in Texas, Inviting Latino Voters examines these efforts. Interview findings reveal two distinct strategies for courting this stakeholder group in Campaign 2000. Results from the content analysis of Latino-oriented Presidential campaign television spots from 1984-2000 indicate that the parties' invitations to Latinos for partisan identification are positive, Latino-centric , social uncontroversial, and empowering. And, results from the survey of Latino citizens in Texas indicate that these Latinos, especially young Latinos, feel modest identification with political parties. Latino's party identification was found to be complex, however, relating to other identification targets such as candidate and country. Connaughton concludes by arguing that identification is relational. That is, it is dynamic, it involves varying degrees of investment and it is embedded in systems of power. Implications for political parties, Latinos, organizations in general and communication scholars are discussed.

                                Book Description

This landmark collection of essays from the 1984 National Association for Chicana Studies conference entitled “Voces de la Mujer” offers a cross-section of the interdisciplinary scholarship on Chicanas in U.S. society. Chicanas' roles in politics, history, bilingualism, the work force, literature, and higher education are examined in depth in the twenty essays.

Introducing the third printing of this influential book in a new foreword by Teresa Córdova, which updates readers on the gains and struggles of Chicanas in the association since these essays were originally published. Córdova puts the conference that gave root to these essays in historical perspective as an important turning point for Chicana academics on the road to establishing their rightful place on university campuses.

Emerging from Chicana Voices is a multifaceted picture of Chicanas—the impact they have had on U.S. history, culture, higher education, and their own communities.
