Book Description
What does matter look like at the molecular and atomic level? Why are leaves green? Why do colored fabrics fade upon repeated exposure to sunlight? Why does a pencil leave a mark when dragged across a sheet of paper? All of these basic questions have molecular answers that teach and illustrate chemical principles. Nivaldo Tro introduces each concept with a thought experiment, then develops the chemical principles and concepts involved in a molecular understanding of the experiment. Once students have grasped the basic concepts, they are introduced to consumer applications and environmental problems related to the concepts. Mathematical aspects of chemistry are optional.

From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi: Our Embassy Years during Genocide (Focus on American History Series,Center for American History, University of Texas at Austin)
Ambassador Robert Krueger , and Kathleen Tobin Krueger Manufacturer: University of Texas Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0292714866 |
Book Description
In 1994, while nations everywhere stood idly by, 800,000 people were slaughtered in eight weeks in Rwanda. Arriving as U.S. Ambassador to neighboring Burundi a few weeks later, Bob Krueger began drawing international attention to the genocide also proceeding in Burundi, where he sought to minimize the killing and to preserve its fledgling democratic government from destruction by its own army. From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi is a compelling eyewitness account of both a horrific and persistent genocide and of the ongoing efforts of many courageous individuals to build a more just society.
Krueger and his wife Kathleen graphically document the slaughter occurring all around them, as well as their repeated efforts to get the U.S. government and the international community to take notice and take action. Bob Krueger reconstructs the events of the military coup that precipitated the Burundi genocide and describes his efforts to uncover the truth by digging up graves and interviewing survivors. In straightforward and powerful language, Kathleen Krueger recounts her family's experience living amid civil war, including when she faced down a dozen AK-47-wielding African soldiers to save the life of a household worker.
From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi shines a piercing light on a genocide that has gone largely unreported, and identifies those responsible for it. It also offers hope that as the truth emerges and the perpetrators are brought to account, the people of Burundi will at last achieve peace and reconciliation.

Book Description
In the tradition of the bestselling Ophelia Speaks, a collection of provocative essays by teenage girls of colorMy Sisters' Voices is a passionate and poignant collection of writings from teenage girls of African American, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, and biracial backgrounds. With candor and grace, they speak out on topics that are relevant not only to themselves and their peers but to anyone who is raising, teaching, or nurturing young women of color. As adolescents, women, and minorities, these young authors represent a demographic that has had no voice of its own, a group often spoken for but rarely given the opportunity to be heard. Now these young women have a chance to stand up and be counted, to present their own unique perspectives in fresh and astonishing ways. Here you'll find a Native American girl writing about the bumps in her relationship with her best friend, who's white; a Korean American girl who wishes she could help her mother understand that it's okay to socialize with boys as well as girls; and a biracial girl who feels she must be the designated spokesperson for blacks when she's around whites, for whites when she's around blacks, and for biracial people around everyone. These personal and inspiring stories about family, friendship, sex, love, poverty, loss, and oppression make My Sisters' Voices essential reading for young women of all backgrounds.Customer Reviews:

The Emergence of Voice in Latino/a High School Students (Counterpoints (New York, N.Y.), Vol. 147.)

ASIN: 0820449687 |
Book Description
The subordination, suppression, and silencing of bilingual students' voices and their communities by their educational system came under scrutiny at the end of the twentieth century. This book provides a forum for students' voices by examining some of the factors that promote the silencing of voice in Latino/a high school students thus submersing them in the culture of silence. Its significance rests on the ability to draw out, explore, and document how Latino/a students perceive their cultural and linguistic reality; the presentation of curricular and methodological approaches and alternatives to promote the emergence and legitimatization of students' voices; and its insight into and revelation of the ways shared teacher/student experiences, languages, and cultures can shape and impact both classroom relations and the emergence of voice.

Mary Romero, author of Maid in the USA
"Denner and Guzman bring together research that counters with data revealing that young Latinas are successfully negotiating challenges they encounter."
Hispanic Link Weekly Report
Latinas are now the largest minority group of girls in the country. Yet the research about this group is sparse, and there is a lack of information to guide studies, services or education for the rapidly growing Latino population across the U.S. The existing research has focused on stereotypical perceptions of Latinas as frequently dropping out of school, becoming teen mothers, or being involved with boyfriends in gangs.
Latina Girls brings together cutting edge research that challenges these stereotypes. At the same time, the volume offers solid data and suggestions for practical intervention for those who study and work to support this population. It highlights the challenges these young women face, as well as the ways in which they successfully negotiate those challenges. The volume includes research on Latinas and their relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners; academics; career goals; identity; lifelong satisfaction; and the ways in which they navigate across cultures and gender roles.
Latina Girls is the first book to pull together research on the overall strengths and strategies that characterize Latina adolescents' lives in the U.S. It will be of key interest and practical use to those who study and work with Latina youth.

Gay Hegemony/Latino Homosexualities (Latino Communities: Emerging Voices--Political, Social, Cultural and Legal Issues)
Manolo Guzman Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0415976510 |
Book Description
Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities is an interdisciplinary project that weaves ethnographic interviewing with the analysis of texts and material culture to study the intersection of gayness with Latinidad. Unlike other academic treatments of the subject matter, it grounds its argument in an ethnoracial context and takes as point of departure that what needs to be studied explained is gayness not Latinidad. The book argues that gayness is a social formation structured by the racial distinction between blackness and whiteness in the United States and that, as such, the formation gayness is not racially or nationally innocent. Thus, Latinidad, thoroughly shaped by mythologies of racial syncretism, provides a perfect contrast in teasing out the racial undergirding of American gayness. Ultimately Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities claims that the so-called conflict between Latino identity and gayness is not the result of traditional values in Latino cultures ( a played out euphemism for retrograde) but an ethnoracial conflict in as much as the status of gayness does not simply regulate sexual but ethnoracial life as well.

Voices from the Wild Horse Desert: The Vaquero Families of the King and Kenedy Ranches
Jane Clements Monday , and Betty Bailey Colley Manufacturer: University of Texas Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0292752059 |
Book Description
"This is the first major look at the lives of these ranch workers.... [It] will add greatly to the literature on ranch life in South Texas."
Bruce S. Cheeseman, Consulting Archivist and Historian, King Ranch, Inc.
Founded before the Civil War, the King and Kenedy Ranches have become legendary for their size, their wealth, and their endless herds of cattle. A major factor in the longevity of these ranches has always been the loyal workforce of vaqueros (Mexican and Mexican American cowboys) and their families. Some of the vaquero families have worked on the ranches through five or six generations.
In this book, Jane Clements Monday and Betty Bailey Colley bring together the voices of these men and women who make ranching possible in the Wild Horse Desert. From 1989 to 1995, the authors interviewed more than sixty members of vaquero families, ranging in age from 20 to 93. Their words provide a panoramic view of ranch work and life that spans most of the twentieth century.
The vaqueros and their families describe all aspects of life on the ranches, from working cattle and doing many kinds of ranch maintenance to the home chores of raising children, cooking, and cleaning. The elders recall a life of endless manual labor that nonetheless afforded the satisfaction of jobs done with skill and pride. The younger people describe how modernization has affected the ranches and changed the lifeways of the people who work there.

Inviting Latino Voters: Party Messages and Latino Party Identification (Latino Communities: Emerging Voices)
Stacey Connaughton Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0415971829 |
Book Description
Latino's increasing numbers and their uncertain voting behaviors have enticed Democrats and Republicans to actively court this demographic group, seeking their partisan identification. Through an in-depth interview with campaign strategists, a thematic content analysis of Latino-oriented television advertisements, and a survey of Latino citizens in Texas, Inviting Latino Voters examines these efforts. Interview findings reveal two distinct strategies for courting this stakeholder group in Campaign 2000. Results from the content analysis of Latino-oriented Presidential campaign television spots from 1984-2000 indicate that the parties' invitations to Latinos for partisan identification are positive, Latino-centric , social uncontroversial, and empowering. And, results from the survey of Latino citizens in Texas indicate that these Latinos, especially young Latinos, feel modest identification with political parties. Latino's party identification was found to be complex, however, relating to other identification targets such as candidate and country. Connaughton concludes by arguing that identification is relational. That is, it is dynamic, it involves varying degrees of investment and it is embedded in systems of power. Implications for political parties, Latinos, organizations in general and communication scholars are discussed.
