Book Description
An inspirational gathering of fifty-nine new hymn texts, anthems, and poems by the author of Borrowed Light (OUP, 1994) and co-author, with composer Carol Doran, of New Hymns for the Life of the Church (OUP, 1992), and New Hymns for the Lectionary (OUP, 1986). Thomas Troeger is one of the most important American figures in the liturgical renewal movement and is in great demand for workshops, lectureships, and special worship services. His poems and texts for music are widely used by composers, even more widely adapted to standard hymn-tunes by parish musicians, and used by individuals and groups for private devotion. This powerful new collection covers the entire church year along with a broad range of contemporary concerns and issues. The texts are conveniently indexed according to meter, theme and image, and Scripture.
Customer Reviews:
A stunning collection from one of the finest.......2002-04-13
Troeger is one of the very finest living religious poets. This new collection contains an even wider range and variety (even though the number of poems is fewer) than his excellent first collection (Borrowed Light, OUP). In the preface, Troeger writes: "This collection of hymns and anthems, rooted in Christian conviction is intermixed with poems that do not draw upon faith. I am trying to map the landscape of the heart that still rejoices in God yet lives in a world that is largely oblivious to the spiritual dimension of life." He succeeds in portraying this brilliantly. The juxtapositions of texts are both startling and comforting.
Highly recommend simply for reading pleasure, or for those who might wish to make wider use of the texts/poems contained therein (worship leaders, composers, authors, etc.).

Drawing upon the religions of indigenous people, editor Anne Rowthorn has assembled an elegant anthology for readers who find their God in the natural world. For example, Albert Einstein reflects upon the prison humans create when they delude themselves into believing they are separate from nature and the universe. Zen monk Thich Nhat Hahn writes of breathing clean morning air in walking meditation. Chief Sealth (Seattle) explains how every part of the earth is sacred. Even a Northwest logger might think twice before taking a chainsaw to a tree upon reading environmentalist John Muir's sad and beautiful lament, "Any Fool Can Destroy Trees." And poet Diane Ackerman writes of the divine speaking to her "between the wingbeats of hummingbirds, when love smiles humbly at sunrise and in the evening rain." Page by page, prayer by prayer, word by word, these profound pieces of writing offer lifelong companionship for all who believe that God and nature are one and the same. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Anne Rowthorn drew together pieces ranging from the earliest Hindu song (3,000 B.C.) and the oldest known Celtic prayer to a contemporary poem by a Nigerian teenager, with a spate of religious and cultural works in between. This collection features works from the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hahn, Ernesto Cardenal, Wendell Berry, Boris Pasternak, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and Albert Einstein and pieces by children in UN environmental programs.

Worship and Engagement to Save The Earth!.......2000-12-18
This book is a treasury of creation stories, prayers, poems, blessings and rituals. I found it beneficial in two main ways. First, it allows the reader to experience creation from the perspectives of diverse cultures. The breadth of the author's research is evident here, particularly in the inclusion of a significant amount of Asian material which is unknown to most of us in the West. Additionally, her brief notes at the end of each piece help to contextualize the material. But by far my favorite part of the anthology is the second half which contains many rituals celebrating nature. These can be used in personal prayer or communal worship. The author's own Creation Creed and Agape Liturgy are beautiful and easily incorporated into Christian worship. Last but not least, I was very impressed by the introduction to the book which sets what proceeds in the context of ecological activism. The book enables readers to deepen their love for our Earth and thus to sustain activism to save our planet-home for all species and ourselves.
An excellent anthology of religious celebration........2000-03-03
Anne Rowthorn edits Earth And All The Stars (106-X, $15.95), which gathers writings on reconnecting to nature through stories, hymns and prayers from world religions. This draws from a range of religious disciplines to consider these prayers, litanies and songs from ancient to modern times, providing an excellent anthology of celebration.

ancient global thinking.......2003-07-21
i came across this beautiful little book quite by accident when i was browsing through shelves in a library in harvard containing books on ancient indian literature. ''the hymn to the earth'' is a translation in english of an ancient indian composition ( in sankrit) which should really be better known to the modern world. encapsulated in 63 verses is some amazing identification of values, aims and concerns relevant to our own times. i was simply astonished to see the clarity, precision and sophistication of thought comprising the ancient indian hymn to the earth - which is the subject matter of the book.
its not easy to translate a text written almost thirty centuries ago in a classical language like sanskrit into english while retaining the freshness and flavour of the original composition.
shrinivas sohoni has done superb job doing so -- he writes with scholarship, insight and elegance. a special highlight of the book is the brilliant introduction by the writer, and a very moving preface by mother teresa.

Product Description
With the long-awaited publication of this book, we have for the first time in any modern literary form one of the most vital and important of ancient mythsthat of Inanna, the worlds first goddess of recorded history and the beloved deity of the ancient Sumerians.
The stories and hymns of Inanna (known to the Semites as Ishtar) are inscribed on clay tablets which date back to 2,000 B.C. Over the past forty years, these cuneiform tablets have gradually been restored and deciphered by a small group of international scholars. In this groundbreaking book, Samuel Noah Kramer, the preeminent living expert on Sumer, and Diane Wolkstein, a gifted storyteller and folklorist, have retranslated, ordered, and combined the fragmented pieces of the Cycle of Inanna into a unified whole that presents for the first time an authentic portrait of the goddess from her adolescence to her completed womanhood and godship. We see Inanna in all her aspectsas girl, lover, wife, seeker, decision maker, ruler; we witness the Queen of Heaven and Earth as the voluptuous center and source of all fertile power and the unequaled goddess of love.
Illustrated throughout with cylinder seals and other artifacts of the period, the beautifully rendered images guide the reader through Inannas realm on a journey parallel to the one evoked by the text. And the carefully wrought commentaries providing an historical overview, textual interpretations, and aannotations on the art at once explicate and amplify the power, wonder, and mystery embedded in these ancient tales.
Inanna-- the worldf first love story, two thousand years older than the Bibleis tender, erotic, frightening, and compassionate. It is a compelling myth that is timely in its rediscovery.

Incredible Poetry and Power.......2007-10-10
Diane Wokstein's book of the story of Inanna, the original Goddess of the first recorded civilization five thousand years ago between the Tigres and the Euphrates, astonishes with its poetry and power.
This legend, unlike the story of Persephone, describes a woman/Goddess who receives the wisdom of civilization, chooses her mate (with advice from her mother), and willingly descends into the underworld. Also, unlike the Greek myths, there are positive and loving male figures (especially Enki, the God of Wisdom.)
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in mythology and the evolution of myth.
Inanna Queen of Heaven.......2005-11-15
Inanna is about the Sumerian goddess of fertility and the grain. This epic is one of sacred love and worship. It celebrates the goddess religion. This epic predates that of the Iliad and the Bible and yet it predicts the great flood and other events in both. If you wish to read a book rich in Sumerian culture this is the epic for you. It gives a sense of what life was like in one of the very first cultures on earth. Reading Inanna by Wolkstein will broaden your horizons and give you an enjoyable read.
Inanna review: Eshleman 2.......2005-11-15
The story of Inanna is the heroine tale of a Sumerian Goddess. It tells the story of her coming into her power as a Goddess and the struggles she had to deal with along the way. It covers the making of her symbols of power from the Huluppu Tree, her acceptance of the holy me from, a gift from Enki, the god of Wisdom. It also tells of her marraige to the shepherd Dumuzi and their relationship. Most significantly, it tells of her journey to the underworld and her resurection. This story opens the eyes of the reader to the culture and the religious beliefs of the Ancient Sumerians. It portrays a respect and reverence for women and fertility which is unusual in present day society. Inanna and her ability to overcome struggles however, can be applied to the world of today. Through reading this book, you will learn much about overcoming adversity and becoming your own individual person.
Inanna Review.......2005-11-14
This story accounts important events in the life of the Sumerian fertility goddess Inanna. The story begins with "The Huluppu Tree", and then to "Inanna the Goddess of Wisdom", at which point in the story Inanna receives the precious "me" from the god Enki. The story then follows Inanna through "The Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi." The final part of the story is called "The Descent of Inanna." In this part Inanna travels to the underworld to see her sister, Erishkegal. Inanna dies in the underworld, only to be brought back to life with the help of Enki.
I found the book a little difficult to get into at first, but then I began to see it as more than just a story, and I saw all of the things it exposed about the Sumerian culture and way of life. This book was more than just a story. It was filled with all types of emotion, and it exposed a new civilization to the world. Another part of this book that I liked was the fact that the main character of the story was a woman and a heroine. It shows just how important women were in life.
I feel that this book, whether it is liked or not, should still be read. Not only does it shed new light on the idea of the woman/goddess as a heroine, it also opens a person's eyes to a different culture. It takes us out of modern day thinking and shows us what life was like in a culture very different from our own.
Inanna review- Eshleman per 5.......2005-11-14
Although Inanna is not a book I would pick up and read, while reading it in my high school English class I was a bit intrigued. It was a bit odd at first, but as I read on, I found I was enjoying this book. It grabbed my attention. It had lessons hidden within the context of the book that if told normally would have been boring. Although the context of the book was a bit odd, to say the least, I found the book to be educational. It was interesting to know that it is one of the oldest recorded texts. With knowing that, we can better understand why the usage of sexual phrases was so abundant in this reading. I did not know much about Middle-Eastern culture before reading this book. It did help to show some of their customs and ways of living at the time. One thing that I found important when reading the book was the repetition. It was used to show the importance of such things as the "me". The "me" played a major role, and this book portrayed that very well. They told us that Enki did not give all the "me" to Inanna at once, but Inanna received more as she arrived in Uruk. Also, repetition was used to show the fertility of Inanna. Since she is the fertility goddess, this is extremely important. On portion of the book that I really connected with was the part where Inanna goes down to the Underworld to see Erishkegal. It may have been the wording, but this portion panted a vivid picture in my mind. Between the descriptions of the corpse of Inanna, and the doings of the gala I was able to see in my mind what was happening. Over all, I found Inanna to be interesting as well as a bit educational of Middle-Eastern culture. I would not read it on my own, but did not find it a waste of my time.
Book Description
"Written in an engaging style and based on solid scholarship, this work by Argote-Freyre should make us wonder how we have gone this long without an authoritative treatment of the life and times of the man second only to Fidel Castro in his importance to twentieth-century Cuba. A sorely needed contribution." Lisandro Perez, Florida International University
Pawn of the U.S. government. Right-hand man to the mob. Iron-fisted dictator. For decades, public understanding of the pre-Revolutionary Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista has been limited to these stereotypes. While on some level they all contain an element of truth, these superficial characterizations barely scratch the surface of the complex and compelling career of this important political figure.
Second only to Fidel Castro, Batista is the most controversial leader in modern Cuban history. And yet, until now, there has been no objective biography written about him. Existing biographical literature is predominantly polemical and either borders on hero worship or launches a series of attacks aimed at denigrating his entire legacy.
In this book, the first of two volumes, Frank Argote-Freyre provides a full and balanced portrait of this historically shadowed figure. He describes Batista's rise to power as part of a revolutionary movement and the intrigues and dangers that surrounded him. Drawing on an extensive review of Cuban newspapers, government records, memos, oral history interviews, and a selection of Batista's personal documents, Argote-Freyre moves beyond simplistic caricatures to uncover the real man - one with strengths and weaknesses and with a career marked by accomplishments as well as failures.
This volume focuses on Batista's role as a revolutionary leader from 1933 to 1934 and his image as a 'strongman' in the years between 1934 and 1939. Argote-Freyre also uses Batista as an interpretive prism to review an entire era that is usually ignored by scholars - the Republican period of Cuban history. Bringing together global and local events, he considers the significance and relationship of the worldwide economic depression, the beginnings of World War II, and in Cuba, the Revolution of 1933, the expansion of the middle class, and the gradual development of democratic institutions.
Fulgencio Batista and most of Cuba's past prior to the Revolution of 1959 has been lost in the historical mists. Cuba had a rich and fascinating history before the Marxist Revolution and the reign of Fidel Castro. This captivating and long-overdue book uncovers it.
Customer Reviews:
Too repetitive.......2007-07-30
What is a fascinating story of the rise of a poor sugar cane cutter to the presidency of Cuba at age 39 is diluted buy the continuous repetition of the same events over and over again. The book should had been told in one half of the pages used and it should had included volume two.
The Leading Authority on Cuba.......2007-03-12
Frank Argote-Freyre has set himself above other experts on Cuba with the publication of his first volume on Fulgencio Batista. I have never before read an account of any person, or any era, that was better. Talk about disciplined and documented academic research, or talk about lively, easily-read prose, or talk about honest, unbiased analysis, and you have to put Argote-Freyre in the top tier of biographers. As for analysts of Cuba's sad experience, Argote-Freyre has no peer.
Excellent account of life in Cuba.......2007-02-27
This two part biography of Batista attempts to paint the dictator in a new light. The author is very proBatista but does raise some interesting and new perspectives on the man. This first book is about Batista's early years up through the point where he is elected president. It does an excellent job of showing US influences on internal Cuban politics. The various presidents that were Batista's puppets show the level of corruption that runs not only through Cuba but throughout all of Latin America. The narrative account does a great job of shedding light on how Cuba looked in the precastro years and in this case shows how transformative the years before Batista really were. It was a time where Cuba was finding its national image and forming itself as a nation. The book is very well written and provides an interesting account on Cuba during this time period. In short highly recommend.
NINETEEN THIRTIES TO THE NINETEEN FORTIES'S CUBA.......2006-10-12
EXCELLENT BOOK ,VERY WELL DOCUMENTED BOOK ON A VERY INTERESTING YEARS OF CUBAN HISTORY, THAT SOMETIMES IS DIFFICULT TO FIND.MANY INTERESTING FACTS
ABOUT BATISTA'S CHILDHOOD AND RISE TO POWER, I BELIEVE THE CONFLICTS OF THOSE TIMES CREATED THE CONDITIONS FOR CASTRO'S FUTURE RAISE TO POWER IN 1959, GUITERAS PERSONALITY RESEMBLES VERY MUCH CASTRO PERSONALITY AS WELL, AN EXCELLENT BOOK BY ALL MEANS.I WILL RATED A VERY WELL DESERVED 5 STARS
Book Description
Analyzing the crucial period of the Cuban Revolution from 1959 to 1961, Samuel Farber challenges dominant scholarly and popular views of the revolution's sources, shape, and historical trajectory. Unlike many observers, who treat Cuba's revolutionary leaders as having merely reacted to U.S. policies or domestic socioeconomic conditions, Farber shows that revolutionary leaders, while acting under serious constraints, were nevertheless autonomous agents pursuing their own independent ideological visions, although not necessarily according to a master plan.
Exploring how historical conflicts between U.S. and Cuban interests colored the reactions of both nations' leaders after the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista, Farber argues that the structure of Cuba's economy and politics in the first half of the twentieth century made the island ripe for radical social and economic change, and the ascendant Soviet Union was on hand to provide early assistance. Taking advantage of recently declassified U.S. and Soviet documents as well as biographical and narrative literature from Cuba, Farber focuses on three key years to explain how the Cuban rebellion rapidly evolved from a multiclass, antidictatorial movement into a full-fledged social revolution.

A SARGEANT NAMED BATISTA- "UN SARGENTO LLAMADO BATISTA".......2007-01-08
This book was released for pro-regime propaganda purposes during Batista's second tenure in Cuba 1952-1959,just prior to the phoney or regime fixed, 1954 presidential election in Cuba. It is practically an autobiography in which Fulgencio Batista, speaks favorably of, you guessed it Fulgencio Batista. In it, he tries to justify the unjustifiable. Here is a man who during his first tenure, in 1938 and after he had killed and killed and killed, had no scrupples about forming a political alliance with the Cuban Communist Party, then a Stalinist entity semi-disguised under the name of "Partido Socialista Popular". an He gave the Cuban Communists a legal and recognized political party status, gave them cabinet posts plus control of the Cuban Confederation of Labor and allied himself with them in what was known as "Coalicion Socialista Democratica" or "Democratic Socialist Coalition" in order to win the 1940 Presidential election which he eventually did.
If you like to read books written by or for tyrants, lavishing praise on them or themselves like Hitler's Mein Kampf, or Castro's "La Historia Me Absolvera" ("History Shall Absolve Me"), then "A Sargeant Named Batista" is also your book. If you loathe dictators, like me, then this book is good for one thing, the garbage can.
