NEW second edition coming out April 1, 2003.......2002-11-06

Hi, this is Bill Sullivan, the author of this book. Because of the large fires in Southern Oregon this past summer, I've decided to completely update this book. I've rehiked the trails and discovered some interesting new paths. The old edition is now out of print, but I'll have the new second edition available April 1, 2003 -- at the same price. I think it will be worth the wait!

Sullivan's books are accurate!.......2000-08-10

I'm a bit puzzled by the previous review, because Sullivan'sbooks really do have fewer factual errors than most. In fact, he claims to offer a reward to anyone who reports an actual error -- this info is on page 2 of the book -- and he updates the book often, as you can tell by the copyright dates. If the reviewer above really has found a glitch, I'd suggest he report it to Sullivan (the address listed on Sullivan's Website). Maybe the reviewer has an old edition of the book?

The hikes are well chosen but fact checking is sometimes lax.......1999-11-01

I've recently moved to Southern Oregon and this guide has been an invaluable introduction to the hikes in the area. The book is well organized, and does a good job of ranking hikes according to difficulty and seasonality. One failing, however, is the large number of factual errors such as confusing north for south, or mis-stating the number of road miles to the trailhead. These sorts of errors had the positive value of making one more self-sufficient.

This book is a great tool to locate outdoor shelters available to the public. This is the new updated version which has the latest pricing info. and great comparison charts between locations. However, I think it could use more maps and directions. Also, the older version of this book gave much better photos to help you understand what really to expect at these locations.

An Amazing Reference Tool for the Nature Lover!.......1999-05-15

Just astounding! I have stayed at three of the lookout featured in the book, and they are every bit as wonderful as the book illustrates. This book is a must for the nature lover. I'm not much of a hiker or skier, so fortunately this book tells you how difficult it is to reach each lookout. And most all the lookouts are a mere $25-$40 a night! My lookout trips have been the best vacations I've ever had. Please, please pick up this book if you plan to be in Oregon for any length of time and love great scenery...

Hiking guide? Hardly........2005-07-11

If you are interested in learning about the history of Mt. Hood National Forest, then this is a great book. However, if you want a guide to the best hikes, maps, elevation gain, distance, time needed to hike, trip highlights, and landmarks, then you will be sorely disappointed by this book.

It is obvious the author has a great affinity for the forest, but this should be marketed less as a hiking guide and more as an overview of current issues and past events in the forest. Thirty-one hikes are "profiled", but little more than their name, how to get there, a level of difficulty, and amount of use is listed. There is a long discussion about each hike, but each discussion goes off onto a tangent about other issues about things the author saw on each hike. There are some useful nuggets in the discussion, but it is difficult to wade through the "fluff" to get them.

It is a well researched book, but in no way is this a useful hiking guide. Buy Fred Barstad's book of Mt. Hood and Badger Creek Wilderness instead. It isn't as pretty looking as this book, but it will be far more useful.

Combining intellectual and social history, Teresita Martínez-Vergne explores the processes by which people in the Dominican Republic began to hammer out a common sense of purpose and a modern national identity at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries.

Hoping to build a nation of hardworking, peaceful, voting citizens, the Dominican intelligentsia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries impressed on the rest of society a discourse of modernity based on secular education, private property, modern agricultural techniques, and an open political process. Black immigrants, bourgeois women, and working-class men and women in the capital city of Santo Domingo and in the booming sugar town of San Pedro de Macor's, however, formed their own surprisingly modern notions of citizenship in daily interactions with city officials.

Martínez-Vergne shows just how difficult it was to reconcile the lived realities of people of color, women, and the working poor with elite notions of citizenship, entitlement, and identity. She concludes that the urban setting, rather than defusing the impact of race, class, and gender within a collective sense of belonging, as intellectuals had envisioned, instead contributed to keeping these distinctions intact, thus limiting what could be considered Dominican.

Ray John de Aragón, a leading scholar on Padre Martinez and the authority on his life and work, translated the original Spanish text of the Sanchez book into English.
