Book Description
Now in one volume, the works of "the most successful international playwright of her generation" (Vogue).
Yasmina Reza's plays reflect the razor sharp wit, social commentary, and impeccable comedic timing that have earned the praise of critics throughout the world, none more so than the Tony Award-winning Art, an eccentric and clever play of ideas that took the American theater community by storm. In this sly critique of contemporary relationships, Reza skillfully picks apart the friendship of three men via a bowl of olives and a white-on-white painting. Now translated into more than 30 languages, Art continues to be performed worldwide, even as Reza's other plays have garnered similar acclaim. Life x 3, Reza's most recent offering, again highlights her satirical wit as two couples face off in three different versions of the dinner from hell. Praised as "compact, cool and clever" by Christopher Isherwood of Variety, Reza uses the acidic exchanges of her characters to illuminate their inner desire for love and acceptance. Also included in this edition are two earlier plays, The Unexpected Man and Conversations After a Burial. Each elucidates the startling difference between public and private life, be it in the confines of a train compartment or a country estate in the aftermath of a loved one's passing.
Book Description
Hugo Award winner and best-selling author Harry Turtledove has garnered high praise for his mastery of alternate history science fiction, and for his fantasy adventure novels, but he is equally a master of science fiction adventure, as he proves in this new Baen MegaBook containing two complete novels and a baker's dozen of brilliant shorter works.
Earthgrip - Jennifer Logan, young and beautiful, wanted to teach Middle English. But getting a job required a striking resume, and she thought that getting a berth on an interstellar trading ship would be just the ticket. And before she could say, this wasn't what I had in mind, she was off on what would be the adventure of a lifetime-though her lifetime might suddenly be cut rather short.
Noninterference - The Survey Service was supposed to observe alien worlds on the verge of civilization, without in any way interfering. But the expedition to Bilbeis IV, over 1,000 years ago, had broken the rule, with results that no one could have predicted. The Survey Service was still around, more bureaucratic than ever, and when they returned to Bilbeis IV and saw what the previous expedition had done, they knew that they could not allow the facts to get out. And unless one man could stop them, more than incriminating documents might be shredded-an entire inhabited world was at risk!
Kaleidoscope - A selection of short science fiction and fantasy for all tastes. Suppose Jack the Ripper was a vampire, and another vampire was given the job of catching him? Suppose all the other races in the galaxy have starships, but haven't developed the other technologies that have exploded on Earth-including weapons? Suppose the Nazis had to deal with Mahatma Gandhi and his nonviolent resistance? And much more.
Publisher's Note: Earthgrip, Noninterference and Kaleidoscope have been previously published as separate books. This is their first combined publication.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Collection.......2007-05-15
I have always like Harry Turtledove's stories. This book introduced me to some I did not know of. It is a collection of shorter fiction, all of which are pretty good. Some are genuinely great. The combination of humor and good writing makes for a fantastic read.
Be aware: Some of the stories have been published before as books.
Reprint.......2004-07-08
I'm a big Turtledove fan, but I won't be ordering this one, because it's a reprint of some of his older work that I already have. Although this isn't (presently) clear from this site's description of the book, it includes the previously published Earthgrip, Noninterference and Kaleidoscope.
If you haven't read these before, 3 x T is worth a look.

Book Description
From the celebrated writer of Art, a scathingly hilarious commentary on vanity, professional insecurity, and the vicissitudes of marriage.
Life X 3 presents three versions of two couples (and an offstage six-year-old) trying to make a success of one evening despite the fact that they neither like nor respect one another. When Hubert and Inès arrive a day early to dinner at the home of Henri and Sophie, Sophie barely has time to change out of her robe and Inès is in a foul mood about a run in her stocking-from there, the evening can only go downhill. Over an improvised meal of chocolate fingers, potato chips, and wine, the couples trade insults on every social and professional level and loyalties are changed with the same rapidity that glasses of Sancerre are drained. However, as she has so astutely done in the past, Yasmina Reza uses these acidic exchanges to illuminate the innate desire for love and acceptance in us all.

"How can we grasp the world as it is?".......2004-06-27
This clever, light comedy, written in 2000, presents the same basic reality in three different ways in three different acts. Sonia and Henri, a married couple with a small child, are relaxing after putting their recalcitrant son to bed. Suddenly, Ines and Hubert, guests whom they had expected the following evening, arrive for dinner, which, in this emergency, turns out to be "chocolate fingers" and "crisps." Henri is an astrophysicist who has devoted three years to a research project which is about to be published, and Hubert tells him that night that another researcher may have beaten him to the publisher. Hubert, also an astrophysicist, may be able to help Henri professionally.
In each of the three acts, which replay this scenario, one or more characters changes, dramatically affecting the dynamics of the group and the outcome of the evening. In Act I, Sonia is rigid and assertive, while Henri is the opposite, wanting to placate both their screaming son and Hubert, who can help him professionally. In Act II, sexual politics becomes a focus, with Hubert and Sonia agreeing to an assignation, until Hubert's self-promotion and condescension, combined with intemperate remarks by Ines, bring the evening to a disastrous close. In Act III, everyone is more relaxed and is conversing about "unity theory." Both couples are patient with the child upstairs, Henri has more confidence, he is sanguine about the research of the other scientist, and Hubert, while insensitive in his relationships, is not a complete dolt.
As astrophysicists, both Henri and Hubert have been studying "unity theory," a theory connecting the fundamental forces of the universe and explaining interactions, and the author illustrates this visually through the action on stage. Like the four fundamental forces of nature, we have four characters, some weak and some strong, operating independently on some levels while interrelating on others. As we see from the different outcomes in the three acts, minor changes or glitches, even random ones, can affect relationships, future directions, and the whole concept of "unity." The characters are quite different in personality in each of the acts, not really unified as personalities, illustrating dramatically Hubert's observation about the gap between "reality and representation," and between "object and word." Though the conceit is clever, the play stands as a sparkling, light comedy of relationships on its own--familiarity with science is not a prerequisite to its enjoyment. Mary Whipple

Customer Reviews:
Interesting.......2001-11-20
This wonderful little book (of about 44 pages) is designed for younger readers in the Level 4 - "Proficient" category. This is not a comic book, though it does contain a number of wonderful pictures. Instead, this book is about making comic books. It talks about the artists behind the comics, and how they go about designing and creating comics, the X-Men in particular.
This is an interesting book. My eight-year-old son got this book, and enjoyed it, though I don't believe that he understood everything in it. Overall, though, he did like the book. So, we do recommend this book.
atlast,info on x-men behind the scenes.......2000-10-21
It always eluded me as to how the X-men were on and off a sizzling bestselling comic book for the past twenty years. So what fuels this book is actually curiousity.'Cause it was always a wonder to me what was it that made x-men so diferent than other comics.Well,i still don't see what makes this a phenomenal chart-scorcher,but it will be a bit useful for aspiring artists and writers trying to break into the comic field.

Book Description
This monumental collection gathers essays, travel journals, letters, poems, and translations from one of the most influential literary voices of the twentieth century
Gary Snyder has been a major cultural force in America for five decades-prize-winning poet, environmental activist, Zen Buddhist, and reluctant counterculture guru. Having expanded far beyond the Beat poems that first brought his work into the public eye, Snyder has produced a wide-ranging body of work that encompasses his fluency in Eastern literature and culture, his commitment to the environment, and his concepts of humanity's place in the cosmos. The Gary Snyder Reader showcases the panoramic range of his literary vision in a single-volume survey that will appeal to students and general readers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Teacher, Intellect, Poet and hero, Gary Snyder is for you!.......2001-07-28
Gary Snyder is an amazing person. He is an intellect. He is a poet. He is a teacher, a traveler, and he is a deeply spiritual man. He lives the life that we should all attempt to lead, a conscious thinking, methodical, contemplative life, asking questions arriving at conclusions and taking action.
The Gary Snyder Reader is a good compilation of his life's work, the variety inside includes essay, interview, and poetry. This book is a well rounded view of his feelings and belief's about nature, and that of the nature of the soul, the nature of man. I agree with other reviews written here about the power of Synder's writing. His is a strong voice which is able to make a terrific argument about everything from the history of the Christian church and some reasons for underlying social perils to making a call for more activism in one's own community. Make a difference, be responsible, see things for what they are, yes this is all there.
There is also the voice of pain, loss, suffering, anger, and very deep love. Above all else, one REALLY gets the feeling that Synder loves, passionately. Gary Snyder is an extremely talented writer and poet. The same voice that won the Pulitzer is still here. Do more than read and enjoy his works, read and be changed.
a primer for the 21st century.......2001-03-23
most of us first heard of snyder though kerouac's dharma bums. and i must confess that is why i was 1st attracted to him and his writings. but to list snyder as just another beat it not only inaccurate it does a diservice to him, his writings and his fearless intellect. snyder is not only a great poet but is also an insightful naturalist and a true zen master. this anthology is actually a zen bible for the 21st century, filled with enjoyable reading and great insights. these writings would make the soul of han shan dance, and sakyamuni smile. this is one of my favorite books. just reading it will lighten your spirit and make your soul dance with joy.
A word gardener sampler.......2000-10-03
Gary Snyder's power appears to come from mountain, meandering and meditation. In this thick sampler we visit his life to age sixty-eight through notes, prose and poems. The soil of his writings range across a fire lookout station in the Cascade Range, a Japanese Zen temple, the engine room of a Pacific freighter, an audience with the Dalai Lama, work and climbs with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Lew Welch, and Nanao Sakaki, travel in Botswana and Zimbabwe with his sons. The essence of his power is nature. "Nature is not a place to visit, it is home-and within that home territory there are more familiar and less familiar places." Two sons, one Pulitzer, many other awards so far. He writes, he reads, he teaches. One hopes that he never tires of planting words in the soil that is us. If there are any legitimate Earth heroes, Gary Snyder is one.
Capturing the spirit of a poet.......1999-06-07
Gary Snyder has been an inspiration to me and to a lot of other people for many years now. This book is a joy to read because it gives us so much of his poetry, as well as his philosophy of life, nature and Buddhism over a course of 46 years. Much of it has been pulled from his various books, but reading it again after time has passed brings a new perspective and an added appreciation for the work. Thanks Gary, for doing the real work for all these years.
Snyder has got to be one of the best poets in modern poetry........1999-04-27
Snyder has a way of showing things in life, that the rest of us miss because we are to busy living. Basically I can't say enoough good things aboout his work.
