If you call yourself a computer graphics professional but aren't sure of the meaning of cukaloris, Lambertian reflection, or umbra, you might want to pick up a copy of Visual Effects in a Digital World: A Comprehensive Glossary of over 7,000 Visual Effects Terms. Educational, fun, and historically fascinating, this is one of those books that every pixel monkey should have on his or her shelf.
If you've ever wondered what, exactly, rotoscope means (it has three different meanings) or what to eat with a "metaball," this book is for you. Chock full of interesting tidbits and a 32-page color gallery of examples, this is probably one of the more interesting technical dictionaries you'll ever have the pleasure of looking through.
Perhaps you know the difference between an array and an Arri, but the producer you're trying to explain it to is clueless. The clear, concise definitions listed here can help elucidate these terms and others so that even the most dense suit will, if not understand, at least feel like you must know what you're talking about.
It's one thing to be able to know what buttons to push, but something else entirely to be able to stump your friends with the meaning of arcane terms like Lindenmayer System or octrees. Everyone knows you're a geek. Now you can prove it. --Mike Caputo

Customer Reviews:
Good as a dictionary, no in-depth technical.......2002-01-31
A thorough coverage of industry terminology, in an industry where terms are relentless being colored, reinvented and made anachronisms. However don't expect in-depth coverage of the mechanics of a given technique - there is simply no room for detail with this many terms to cover.
A great, extremely comprehensive reference.......2001-09-18
I've watched Karen put this book together over the course of the last year or so (even had a chance to give my 2cents on a couple of terms) and so I can hardly be called an Unbiased Reviewer. But now that it's done, I'd have to say that just about anybody who is involved with visual effects (which these days means just about any aspect of filmmaking in general) will find this book well worth owning. And even if you HAVE been in the industry for a long time, I guarantee that you'll be able to learn a few new things (or re-learn a few old things) after thumbing through this book.
Exactly what I wanted.......2001-08-26
Karen E. Goulekas has saved me quite some time with this book by providing a complete description for over 7,000 visual effects terms often referred to within the industry. In the past, I often had to search the net for certain terms and descriptions that had me baffled...but no more. For those of you who are considering buying this book, know that it isn't a book full of pictures (Although it does contain 32 pages of colour stills); It isn't a book detailing visual effects work in particular films; It is what is says - 'A comprehensive glossary of over 7,000 visual effects terms'. If this is what you're looking for, this book is for you.
Dictionary of Visual Effects.......2001-08-20
From the publisher of 'Art &Science of Digital Compositing'
First of all, This book is not a case by case study book. This is A-Z Dictionary about Visual Effects. I was disappointed by first impression. but it contains huge contents. including 16 pages color pics. May be very helpful students, people who in effects industry.

Book Description
If you're a true Flash master--and we're betting you are--you know that the real power behind the throne in Macromedia's wildly popular Web animation software is its programming language: ActionScript 2.0. Offering a more robust programming model and better object-oriented programming support than ever before, ActionScript 2.0 allows you to take your Flash MX 2004 designs to new levels--if, that is, you know how to make full use of it. This volume, from the folks behind the software, makes sure that you do! In this highly cross-referenced dictionary, you'll find detailed descriptions of every ActionScript operator, keyword, statement, action, property, function, object, component, and method. What's more, an invaluable chart will help you locate definitions for symbolic operators or methods even when you don't know the object or component class. To top it all off, Macromedia has rounded up a posse of Flash and ActionScripting luminaries to contribute articles on a range of topics--from converting ActionScript 1.0 to ActionScript 2.0 to using design patterns in Flash.
Customer Reviews:
Very Useful Reference for a Great Price!.......2006-05-10
I have found this book to be a very useful reference. I don't think it was really meant to teach novice Flash designers/developers how to become an ActionScript developer. It is however meant to be a thorough ActionScript dictionary and reference to which it does a very good job. If you are looking for a tutorial, get one of the O'reilly books (ActionScript for Flash MX: TDG, and/or Essential ActionScript 2.0), I have both of these books and they are wonderful learning books. I do have to say that the ActionScript 2.0 Dictionary (this book) and ActionScript for Flash MX (from O'reilly) are the two books on AS that have a permanent spot on my desk. Also, you can't beat the price of this book, completely worth it if you are looking for a reference.
Comprehensiv dictionary.......2005-03-25
As its name states this is an ActionScript dictionary. It is devided in several parts being the last one the dictionary. The other parts will help you know what for is ActionScript and Flash and how to make AcitonScript work in your animations. You should have a good knowledge of Flash in order to understand and implement the contents of the book. Do not expect to find complete examples to run in Flash directly. Instead you will find short ones that help you understand and feel the power of ActionScript. If you work with ActionScript this dictionary must be on your desk at any time to know exactly what you are doing and how it is made.
It is not very expensive and very helpful.
BE AWARE!! This book contains MAJOR script errors.......2005-02-13
I bought this thinking "Macromedia should knopw how to write a dictionary about their own product, right?" This book looks like went to press without even passing NEAR an editor's desk; in the first 5 references I looked up, four of them were incomplete or outright wrong. Syntax listings are written incorrectly, and I have found usage samples under code listings that just would not work, because they have been written incorrectly. Having worked with Flash for 6 years now, I was really hoping to have a nice handy reference to sit on my desk. This book is NOT it.
Why get the hard copy when you have it built-in-Flash?.......2005-02-08
If you think, like me, you are going to learn how to create chunky codes by buying this book, think again. In fact, except for the articles at the beginning, most of the stuff in this book is in help section of Flash. If you open the help panel in Flash, search for whatever item in the dictionary, you will get sometimes exact descriptions what the dictionary says. Yet, it is a good reference, assuming you don't like reading off of a screen. This IS ONLY A REFERNCE. It is not going to teach you code, although they offer some sample codes depending on the feature you are looking for.
Excellent ActionScript 2 Resource.......2005-01-11
When you fall in troubles doing your Flash project this book is a must! A complete reference for ActionScipt 2. At the beginning there are few useful articles by professionals, which I really found them helpful and then whole the book, the reference. You're not going to learn so much of ActionScript by this book, bear in mind this is a reference, meaning you know some stuff, but as a matter of forgetting the commands or finding the proper commands you refer to it. But don't worry if you have the talent, which I'm sure, you can figure out how to program by the little examples at the end of each command. Good Luck...

Book Description
I am of Kerry explores the diversity and richness of a people who live or were born in The Kingdom. The unequivocal intrigue and attraction of this place is immortal. It is sometimes thought that Kerry people are moulded by the physical strains of mountains and angry seascapes, and that this wild, untamed structure intensifies their vision and inspiration. Such wilderness-inspired creativity is to be found in verse, art, pottery, prayer, stories, song and photography. Valerie O'Sullivan's highly individual portraits of her chosen subjects captures them in full flow, featuring atmospheric photographs, a short biography and their own personal reflection, poem, personal thoughts - at once heart rending and humorous.
Those featured are from many different walks of life, some well-known and synonymous with Kerry, others simply with a great story to tell.
Royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre.
