Book Description
An illustrated parody of the multimillion-copy-selling pregnancy primer What to Expect When You're Expecting, and the perfect gift for everyone who has had a baby, is having a baby, or is even thinking of having a baby.
Customer Reviews:
Funny and too accurate!.......2001-02-10
I read this book during my first pregnancy, and honestly, it was more helpful than all the medical guides. It got me to laugh at myself, the perfect de-stressor for the tense expectant mother. From descriptions of the various kinds of birth attendants (like the Old Geezer, who actively dislikes women and treats pregnancy as a disease) to exercises you can do (walk like an Egyptian, waddle like a duck...) to what you'll be looking like this month (stuck in the bathtub) it covers everything (except the medical.) Most expectant mothers with sense of humor will appreciate the authors' gentle poking-of-fun at pregnancy, a laughter that never turns mean or hurtful. The only thing I didn't really like were the tax tips.

Pretty good........2003-10-28
This book collects a few issues of the Paul Jenkins Peter Parker series (between issues 40 through 50): "Snow Day," "The Big Question," "The Big Answer," "And Here My Troubles Begin," and one other issue whose title escapes me at the moment.
The writing and the artwork is pretty good for the majority of the book, but Paul Jenkins' contribution to the second part of the two-part story in this book ("The Big Question," part one, and "The Big Answer," part two) falls a bit on the convenient and ridiculous side at a few instances in the script. Also, the reprint of double-sized issue 50 (volume two, mind you) has a lot of potential, but the writer's execution doesn't live up to it. That's not to say that it's a terrible outing -- quite the opposite, actually. It's still enjoyable and better than a lot of other Spider-Man stuff out there.
The real gems in this collection, though, are the first two chapters: An excellent story about a neglected black child who escapes into a world of fantasy, which is inspired by the few positive aspects of his life (his Uncle Ray and his school), and one story called "Snow Day," which was just as entertaining (although not as emotionally powerful). These issues alone are worth the price of admission.
Too bad there isn't a collection of Jenkins' entire one-issue stories. Those are the times when the series really shined.
This is the last collection of Peter Parker that was written by Paul Jenkins and drawn by Mark Buckingham. When this series was canceled, Paul Jenkins started to write the second volume of Spectacular Spider-Man, with Humberto Ramos on drawing chores. It's a bit different from the Peter Parker issues, but it's still good. However, it is in my personal opinion that Ramos will not be able to do as good a job as Mark Buckingham, and it seems so far that Jenkins' best writing is the one-issue stories rather than a four-, five-, or six-part story arc.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable book, worthy of having the name "Spider-Man" on the cover. It's high moments are truly some of the greatest contributions to the Spider-Man mythos.
Book Description
Jack Zipes presents the many faces of Little Red Riding Hood. Bringing together 35 of the best versions of the tale, from the Brothers Grimm to Anne Sexton, Zipes uses the tales to explore questions of Western culture, sexism and politics.
Customer Reviews:
intriguing!.......2001-05-01
This is a fascinating look at how one story changes through the course of time. Zipes presents many versions of "Little Red" -- and each change represents a change in the ideas of the storyteller and his or her time and the needs of the listener. Observing the story's progression through the last few centuries tells us much about what we have lost and gained, known and forgotten, desired and feared. "Little Red" becomes a microcosm for the developing individual and social human psyche, as we watch what the cautionary tale cautions us against and takes for granted. A wonderful read for anyone interested in myth, sociology, fiction writing, or cultural development/studies.

Basics behind the making of the film .......2005-04-09
As to say Spike Lee is one-of-a kind director and a good follower. I luv him from the top since he been out. I would actually like to hear more from him 'cuz he's still my top director and mentor. Now back to the movie, I know everybody have love for this flick that Spike Lee created it talks about the life and times of civil rights leader Malcolm X (played by my main man Denzel Washington) which begins on reading the screenplay, the talks about it, the stars who played on the film and to those that believe that believe it out, etc. This is one of my all-time favorite books to read 'cuz it tells it all right here from this movie I like. Anyway it's still my #1 favorite movie of all-time. I look forward for Spike Lee putting out a memoir of his life and where he started his film-playing career into a higher level which drops in Sept or Oct of this yr. Specially look forward of hearing it.
An informative and educational book on an important film........1997-10-12
"By Any Means Necessary" is an excellent book on the making of the film "Malcolm X" by director Spike Lee. Not only do we get a chance to see the film from the director's eye, but we also get to read all of the hassles he had to go through in order to come out with a film in Hollywood. The whole tone of the book, like all of Lee's books on his firms, is that of a diary. So what we're reading is random notes, scribbles, and just little lines that he will remember down the line. It almost seemed like a match made in hell: Spike Lee, considered to be a "controversial" film director, does a film on the line of Malcolm X, considered to be a controversial human rights figure. Throughout the book, Lee has to remind himself that despite the nay-sayers, the film will be done, even at times when he doubts his own creative genius. There are also thoughts from some of the actors (including Denzel Washington, who also played Malcolm X in his early years), but the best words come from Lee

Jerry.......2006-12-12
I read this book in just a few hours and found it to be one of the best that I have ever read on the subject of SWAT operations. The underlying leesons in this text could be of benefit to any tenured or new SWAT team leader or tactical commander. Excellent book!
The Trials And Tribulations Of Becoming A Swat Commander.......2005-09-10
This is a basic introduction to the decisions SWAT commanders face. It is short enough that all team leaders can and should read it.
An easy and interesting read.......2005-05-18
This book is clearly modeled after "Duffer's Drift" and fills a gap in those texts that deal with essential material and the more interesting fiction by combining an interesting scenario with an abundance of lessons learned. Consequently, it should be considered a "must read" for law enforcement SWAT personnel, but especially entry-level and first-line supervisors. The lessons are durable, reliable and relevant for all domestic law enforcement but are focused on that critical first-line supervisor. Especially poignant is the overall theme that doing nothing to prepare yourself to handle these types of situations is a recipe for disaster.
A simple book that should be read by every SWAT Commander........2005-05-16
This book should be required reading for all SWAT officers, SWAT supervisors, and administrators in the SWAT chain of command; especially those in upper management. In addition to being the founder and first Director of the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA), the author is literally one of the founding fathers of the SWAT concept.
In this book, Capt. Kolman provides simple lessons for the reader in the form of a story told about a new SWAT commander named Lt. Oversight who works for the fictional Amazing Police Department. The reader follows Lt. Oversight through a series of dreams where he gets multiple chances to respond to the same SWAT call out. The first time that Lt. Oversight responds to the call out, he makes a royal mess of things. However, much like Bill Murray's character in the movie, "Groundhog Day," Lt. Oversight is forced to repeat the same incident over and over again while he gradually improves upon his choices and actions. The reader is able to learn from Lt. Oversight's mistakes and see how he should have solved the tactical, logistical, and administrative problems that are all too common in SWAT call outs. In the end, Lt. Oversight finally gets it right.
This is a short book that can be read in one sitting. The appendices alone are worth the purchase of the book. Appenix A, (Lessons Learned) is a list of 24 tactical truths that are universally accepted within the SWAT community but which many Patrol, Negotiator (CNT), and Administrative types still need to be educated about. Appendix B is entitled, "Selected Suspect/SWAT Comparative Options." It is a sort of "if he does that then you do this" decision-making guide for SWAT commanders. While no competent SWAT commander should rely solely on a book for his decisions, this appendix will go a long way towards helping commanders formulate correct decisions which are on par with accepted industry standards. Appendix B in particular should be reproduced and laminated into a handy reference card for every SWAT supervisor to have on his person at all times.
If you are involved in SWAT and you are serious about becoming a better operator, team leader, commander, or administrator, then you need to read this book.

Life and Heart Lessons.......2006-08-21
This poetry book expresses the true feelings of a young man who wrestled with many demons and won the battle. To be able to put his thoughts into words and then follow through with his dream to publish is extraordinary. I am so proud of Jonathan and Patrick who captured Jonathan's words in the beautiful illustrations. We hope to see more work in the future.
Deep and inspiring.......2006-06-15
Deep and inspiring, if only those words could have a stronger menaing. This book is just my thoughts and feelings are speaking to me through Jonathan's words. It would almost be scary if I couldn't help but enjoy this book so much. The way the artwork coincides with the poems is just another wonderful mystery that allows me to wonder how far the depths of the mind behind this book consists of. And if only I could write forever, that would be the room I need for the talent that this artist, Patrick Smith, is capable of portraying. These boys have a future, and I cannot wait to see it.
Spectacular, just simply amazing.......2006-06-15
If the cover art was not enough for my mind to blow, then I do not know how I am able to write this review with breath, because the poetry has taken mine away. Such thought put behind every page, the art, the poems, the detail, everything this book has to offer is just simply amazing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes anything. I am serious, this book is just simply amazing.
Highly recommended; phenomenal.......2006-06-06
I took a chance on this new author and I have never made a finer decision in my life. Jonathan's poetry is spellbinding from beginning to end. Every line has such meaning that overcomes my emotions with an unimaginable feeling of hope, joy, power, love, and wonder beyond all beliefs. And the art leaves me speechless. The talent the artist has is simply incredible. These boys have a bright future ahead of them, and it all starts with this book that only leaves me with one word to describe it; phenomenal.
Book Description
When John Lajoie approached a bank for a loan to start his private investigation business in 1989, he had trouble convincing anyone he could turn the operation into a success. Less than two decades later, Lajoie owns one of the largest investigative agencies in central Massachusetts and is regarded as one of the nation's leading private investigators. Now, in Trials and Tribulations of a Real Life Private Eye, Lajoie tells his story, explaining the decisions and actions that allowed him to turn a struggling one-man operation into a successful agency. From the details of his work on high-profile homicides cases and as a member of elite criminal defense teams to the death threats and personal struggles that come with success in a dangerous business, Lajoie describes the reality of the world of private investigation as only an expert can. "John Lajoie has produced a truly unique book- a candid portrait of the real world of private investigation, written as only someone with years of success in the business could write it. His memoir balances professional advice with compelling stories of the reality of PI work, and is told with humor and insight." Michael Koryta, Edgar-nominated author, Tonight I Said Goodbye "Lajoie pulls no punches, spares no one that which they deserve, shares credit with his colleagues, and brings more than a few surprises to the table. Whether you're in the PI business or not, this is an entertaining and enlightening read." Don C. Johnson, CLI, CII, Editor, PI Magazine, Journal of Professional Investigators
Customer Reviews:
A good book by a good guy.......2006-05-31
As a professional investigator who has seen some of the best and the worst of this profession, I was truly impressed by how well John Lajoie distilled the investigative experience into 200 pages. I wish that I'd had this book to read when I first "went private"...so that I'd have had an idea of what to expect. This book won't teach you the A-B-Cs of the technical aspects of being a good investigator, but it'll teach you quite a bit about the investigator's life and, if you are an investigative professional, how to bring credit to your chosen profession.
Product Description
Nathan Cohn is one of the winningest criminal defense lawyers alive, founder of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, an organization of the top criminal trial lawyers in the nation, chosen by their peers. "Nate" explains he prefers murder cases because they give him the same thrill that others find in high-stakes gambling. But here the stakes are the highest, someone's life or liberty. His cases include one of the first post-partum depression homicide cases (in which his client spent not a day in jail); the fastest jury acquittal case in California history (40 minutes in a case in which his client confessed to stabbing his victim 18 times); the "Golden Dragon" case in which his client was identified as the shooter in a gang killing by seven eyewitnesses; and the "Cash or Clobber Collection Caper," where he used humor to free his client from a death penalty charge of kidnapping. Nate's tales are redolent with the atmosphere of the San Francisco of the 1940's and 1950's, of Sam Spade and "Baghdad by the Bay" featuring a world of gamblers, bookies, gypsies, prostititutes, shoulder by shoulder with prominent politicians, Hollywood personalities, and society swells, and take him from the world of carnivals and circuses where he was raised to the corridors of the California legislature and the lobbyists and politicians who dominated it all with a laugh and the realization that it is only a quirk of fate, or luck, which separates the insurance company vice president from the corner hustler.
Customer Reviews:
Murder he liked.......2007-01-10
Easy to read and also captured lots of interesting facts of the historical events.
A fascinating glimpse into an earlier San Francisco.......2006-11-30
Once upon a time in "Baghdad by the Bay" -- the now wildly inappropriate nickname for San Francisco coined by Herb Caen -- Nathan "Nate" Cohn was a prominent criminal lawyer and Man-to-go-to. I'm not sure whether we are better or worse off for having left behind the era when a couple of phone calls could "take care of things," but Cohn's memoirs of his days as a crackerjack defense lawyer are so entertaining that they almost make that issue beside the point.
Here's a guy who grew up in an environment of Carnivals and show biz, got into law, founded cigar-smoking luncheon clubs and criminal lawyer societies, and advanced to juggling politicians, lobbyists, and clients amidst the Democratic machines of days past. Chapters on Nate's interaction with the fledgling Castro regime in revolutionary Cuba and the Chicago Democratic convention in 1968 provide a unique angle on those history-changing moments. And then there's the time he went to court for Tempest Storm.
The bottom line: this is a riveting (and chuckle-laden) glimpse into a San Francisco (and USA) that is no more. I happened upon the book unexpectedly and wasn't sure how it would read, but was pleased to discover that it was a diamond in the rough. Californians of a certain era - Jesse Unruh, Pat Brown, Melvin Belli - are prominent in Cohn's anecdotes, but whether you have heard of them or not, this book pays off.
One caveat: Murder He Liked is apparently self-published, although the production values (binding, paper, typesetting, dust jacket design) are all top notch. Where things get a little shaky is in the proofing. Co-author Rory McGahan has taken Cohn's memories and crafted them into straight forward, conversational prose. But the text is peppered with the sort of typos that elude spell-checkers: doubled or dropped words, and the occasional misplaced word. My advice is to put up with these for the sake of the greater story. You may not approve of everything that Nate Cohn brags about, but I don't think you'll regret letting him share his tales. This is invaluable first-person history, direct from the source.

Book Description
Medical malpractice has become a hot issue in our litigious society. The trial lawyers are locked in battle with the doctors, while the politicians and the patients look on. This is about one skirmish in that battle, told by one of the casualties.
Donald Austin, M.D., was a well-respected neurosurgeon, operating at the cutting edge of medical technology. He was justly regarded as an expert in the field, and as such gave testimony for the defense in many malpractice lawsuits. When he was shocked by some instances of malpractice however, and decided to testify for plaintiffs also, he did not bargain for what ensued. As his testifying became known, his professional colleagues and the medical societies carried out a smear campaign that has ended his professional career.
