Customer Reviews:
American Sign Language.......2006-03-02
I purchased this book for my six year old granddaughter because she has been showing an interest in sign. It is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I have seen and the picture associated with each letter is something she can identify with.
Luminous illustrations and a different kind of ABC book.......2004-09-15
Laura Rankin's The Handmade Alphabet portrays the letters of the alphabet along with their manual alphabet counterparts in American Sign Language. Each letter receives one page on which the uppercase letter appears in a black, serif font in the upper-left corner of the page and is accompanied by a realistic illustration of a hand demonstrating the manual alphabet of American Sign Language as well as an object cleverly representing the letter. "G" is demonstrated by a gloved hand; "K" is demonstrated by a baby's hand holding a key ring; "X" shows an x-ray of the hand demonstrating the sign. The illustrations of the hands are done in softly luminous colored pencil on charcoal paper, with exquisite detail. The hands are of different races, sexes, and ages. This book focuses solely on letters, but does offer a key that lists the words for the objects portrayed with each letter. Of course this book will be useful for deaf children or children with deaf parents or friends who are learning the alphabet, but may be useful for other children as well to drive home the concept of abstract symbol systems and the different ways sounds and meaning can be represented.
A work of art.......2001-10-24
The beautiful illustrations - simple yet exquisite, worthy of framing. I first framed some of the pictures and presented them as gifts to some young deaf children with self esteem problems, but it was when I taught hearing adults and did the same thing that I really saw the great impact her illustrations had. It then became a "work of art"
Beautiful... Inventive..........2001-05-31
I found this book in our school library and was stunned by the artwork. I work in a school where the deaf children are mainstreamed into the school. Sign language books are always checked out! This is a big hit with the young students. I give the author an A+ for an excellent book!
Absolutely Beautiful!.......2000-11-22
As an artist, I loved the illustrations. I have always loved to draw hands, and these drawings are beautiful. I am also interested with the beauty and knowledge that signing combines, and this book conveys both wonderfully.

Book Description
Delightfully unpredictable, ABZ is a wonderbook of typography, graphics, and symbols. Julian Rothenstein (creator of our Gift division s popular Redstone line of cards and calendars) turns his idiosyncratic eye towards eccentric alphabets, emblems, and logos discovered in avant-garde modernist publications and other curious sources. Hundreds of examples of graphic ephemera sit side-by-side in inimitable Redstone fashion, mixing peculiar charm with useful reference in one stunning package. Special features include an amazing alphabet, circa 1926, created from photographs of a dancing woman; original test-types for opticians charts; pages from sign artists manuals; and coolly elegant designs from fin de si cle French, German, Italian, and Czech journals. Nearly all of this rare and beautiful material is reproduced here for the first time since its original publication. An art book like no other, ABZ is a collection of typographic oddities taken to the next level of appreciation.
Customer Reviews:
A magnificent look at history of typography.......2003-08-21
This is not a book on modern typography, or on modern ad campaigns; it is a wonderful review on the use of typography through the first 50 years of the 20th century.
Best of all is that the book itself has a beautiful design and concept, as if it were a book from that era: rounded corners, washed away colours... Therefore, in brief, it is more a book to look at, admire, and enjoy, than a book to work with and get ideas from on a usual basis, as it would happen with other kinds of publications. Me, as a lover of typography, strongly recommend it.

Book Description
This book builds on the success of Glanville Price's The Languages of Britain, published in 1984, which was widely acclaimed as the most lively, reliable, and comprehensive survey of the great number of languages that have at one time or another taken root in Britain. This new book draws on contributions from a range of scholars to provide authoritative surveys of all the well-established languages currently spoken in Britain and Ireland, namely the Celtic languages, English, Scots, and the Norman French dialects of the Channel Islands, as well as of Cornish, Manx and Norn (the Norse language of the Northern Isles), which died out relatively recently. Chapters on Romani and the recently arrived community (or immigrant) languages are also included. The importance of Latin and Anglo-Norman as spoken languages in Britain at different periods in the past is recognized and there are chapters on such little known languages as Cumbric, Pictish and the Flemish of south-west Wales. The focus is on historical and sociolinguistic aspects of the languages covered, including their use as literary languages, and their present situation.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful overview - not very in-depth, though.......2001-01-08
Each of the 19 sections of this book covers a different tongue, extinct or existing. Usually about 10 pages are spent per language. There are plenty of maps, for use in placing the exact distribution of whatever language you are reading about. Also, there are decent bibliographies at the end of each article, providing a range of from about 3 to about 20 reference sources you could go to for further research. This is why I gave this work five stars -- I don't think the editor was aiming to provide an absolutely comprehensive overview of all these languages, as, of course, would be impossible. He tells us enough to whet our appetite, and to provoke a certain amount of wonder, and then he tells us where we could go to read more, if we want... For me, the most interesting parts of this book are the little articles Glanville Price included about Flemish surviving as a spoken tongue in some parts of Wales, due to some Flemish knights settling there in the Middle Ages, and the articles about lesser-known Celtic tongues which survived almost to the present... As it says in the blurb Amazon.com provides, the primary focii of these articles are historical, diachronic, and sociolinguistic. I bought this book, and I'm pleased that I did. I recommend it to anyone.

Book Description
The perceptual, linguistic and cognitive processes involved in sighted reading have been widely studied, but the use of touch raises new issues. Drawing on her research with novice and fluent braille readers, Susanna Millar examines how people initially process braille and how skill with sounds, words, meaning and spelling patterns influence processing. The main focus is on braille, but findings on the "Moon" script, vibrotactile devices, maps and icons are also considered in the context of their practical implications and access to omputer technology.
