Customer Reviews:
Amazing Dahl.......2007-01-09
All of Mr. Dahl's books are great! Wished we could meet him in person. Write more Mr. Dahl.
The Marvelous Ladderless Window-Cleaning Company catches a robber!.......2006-11-30
The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me is both funny and serious at the same time. The Ladderless Window-Cleaning Company consists of a giraffe as the ladder, a pellican as the water bucket, a monkey doing the washing, and a kid named Billy as their manager. While they cleaning the Duke of Hampshire, they help catch a robber. This is Roald Dahl's 3rd best book!
VERY CUTE BOOK.......2006-03-15
This is a great book. My students and my children loved this book. Highly recommend it!
Full of imagination - a wonderful tale!.......2006-01-24
This is a beautifully written book to read to your young child. It is so full of imagination that you are taken into Dahl's magical world believing that a giraffe, a pelican, and a monkey could do your next window cleaning. We read "James and the Giant Peach" last year, and like that book this one is great read aloud. The action of the book keeps your child on the tips of their toes. It is such fun!
The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me.......2005-12-06
If you read the book, Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, you would be amazed. If you love Roald Dahl's sense of humor, then you'll love this book! This book will hold your attention with all the funny events while making you laugh.
The story is about three animals that live in a house and clean for money. Pelly is a pelican that has a pretend beak, the giraffe has a long neck that can go higher than the clouds, and the monkey is a cleaner. A kid named Billy is the boss of the cleaners. When they are cleaning, the giraffe is the ladder, Pelly is the bucket, and the monkey uses his climbing ability to clean. What a team they make! In the book there is a rich man who wants his 677 windows cleaned which haven't been cleaned in 4,000 years! When they were cleaning the windows, they caught a burglar called the Cobra, who was the most dangerous burglar.
The funniest part was when Pelly caught the burglar in his beak because there was a lot of action. I also like the part when Billy was in Pelly's beak and started to pick cherries from a cherry tree, and then the gardener fell down from a ladder and Pelly flew down next to Duke. If you want to hear more funny events you will have to read this book. I recommend this book to young children.

Hilary Liftin's Candy and Me (A Love Story) is not only a love story, but also the story of an otherwise normal, slender, strong-toothed woman's lifetime obsession with candy and all things sweet. With brutal honesty, Liftin exposes herself as insatiable. As a child she indulged in cups full of powdered sugar mixed with just enough water to make a paste which she ate in front of the TV, and multiple packs of hot chocolate mix, licked from her finger on her way home from school. She is a connoisseur of every candy you've ever tasted or even heard of, and of many candies you've never (and might never) come across. The friendships, love stories, and heartbreaks that make up her life story evolve through tales of candy consumption. Her memories of all major and minor life events are tightly woven with Necco Wafers, Snickers, Bottle Caps, Conversation Hearts, Circus Peanuts, Twizzler, Tootsie Rolls, Fireballs, Nonpareils, and countless others. Either you'll relate a little, or you'll relate a lot. You might be shocked by the volume of sugar she's ingested, but her story is familiar. She's made friends and lost them, she's fallen in love and had her heart broken. And then she's fallen in love again. Liftin's story is as sweet as her candy cache. --Leora Y. Bloom
Book Description
As a seven-year-old child, Hilary Liftin poured herself a glass (or two) of powdered sugar. Those forbidden cups soon escalated to pound bags of candy corn and multiple packets of dry cocoa mix, launching the epic love affair between Hilary and all things sweet. In Candy and Me: A Love Story, Liftin chronicles her life through candy memories and milestones. As a high school student, Hilary used candy to get through track meets, bad hair days, after-school jobs, and her first not-so-great love. Her sweet tooth followed her to college, where she tried to suppress the crackle of Smarties wrappers in morning classes. Through life's highs and lows, her devotion has never crashed -- candy has been a constant companion and a refuge that sustained her.
As Liftin recounts her record-setting candy consumption, loves and friendships unfold in a funny and heartbreaking series of bittersweet revelations and restorative meditations. Hilary survives a profound obsession with jelly beans and a camp counselor, a forgettable fling with Skittles at a dot-com, and a messy breakup healed by a friendship forged over Circus Peanuts. Through thick and thin, sweet and sour, Hilary confronts the challenges of conversation hearts and the vagaries of boyfriends, searching for that perfect balance of love and sugar.
Written with a fresh dry humor that will immediately absorb you into Liftin's sweet obsessions and remind you of your own, Candy and Me unwraps the meaning found in the universal desire for connection and confection. Treat yourself to Candy and Me -- being bad never read so good.

I Want Candy!!.......2007-08-03
I just finished this book & I loved it! I'd give it 4.5 stars out of 5.
If you like candy, have ever liked candy, have a favorite candy - then you gotta read this book.
* Warning: Reading this book will give you urgent cravings for candy...I made myself sick from eating too many orange Circus Peanuts while reading it. :-D
Makes you feel less alone.......2006-05-02
I feel so much better after having read this book. I am not alone in my obsession over candy. It's not often that a book makes me laugh out loud and call my friend to read her what I'm reading. If you end up liking this book, Candyfreak is a must read. Same story, but his obsession is for chocolate. Anybody who loves candy in an obsessive way will love and enjoy these books.
Light, entertaining and refreshing!.......2004-09-09
Hilary Liftin's Candy and Me : A Love Story was such a refreshing read! I read this book fairly quickly and I found her stories relating to candy to be very entertaining. In life we often have things such as songs, smells, and places to which we relate certain memories. I'm very glad to have had the opportunity to read the memories Ms. Liftin relates to her love of candy. Bonus: For something fun and different, you can go to www.hilaryliftin.com to share your own sweet memories!
The Truth Never Tasted So Sweet.......2004-07-12
Funny, sometimes wistful, and surprisingly thought-provoking. For Hilary and me it's candy; for others it's various substances that fortify and amuse. This well-written self-examination packs a much bigger message than you might expect.
I enjoyed reading it while killing a couple of half-pound bars of Cadbury Milk Chocolate.
This book is a yummy delight!.......2004-03-17
A humorous yet at times poignant account of one woman's life, loves, and confectionary favorites, from her childhood addiction to a homemade sugar paste, to junior mints, to Petite Fruits, Jelly Fruit Wedges, and frosting eaten straight from the can (I thought I was the only one who did that!) A factual account that is as entertaining as any fiction story i have come across. I recommend it highly. A real sweetie of a book!

Fantastic.......2007-10-10
This was one of the funniest books I've read in a while. It kept me entertained. I read it in a day I liked it so much. I never read the first book, Your bed or Mine? or whatever it's called, but I'm planning on buying it immediately.
seriously, Wonderful. Buy It!! Read it!! Love it!!!
Now I can't wait for another one of her books in the series, I hope she keeps going!
Candy Sure Can..........2007-09-04
...tell an amazing story!
Alicia, a member of the Housewives Fantasy Club, has sworn off men. When her friends try to set her up with Jake Sims she wants nothing to do with it. Will she change her mind?
Candy Halliday can sure pen a story that keeps you laughing, all the while it deals with real life issues like betrayal and child custody. Candy sure can tell an amazing story!!
Candy does it again.......2007-07-24
What would you do if your celebrity crush suddenly moved into the neighborhood and was still as enticing as ever? Alicia is a divorcee who's sworn off men since discovering her wealthy husband with the pool boy. At first treated like a pariah by her suburban Chicago neighbors, she's now their friend and a fixture in their Housewives Fantasy Club. When retired Cubs star Jake Sims moves in across the street, the ladies are trying to set them up, but Alicia wants nothing to do with a bad boy. Jake just wants to prove he can raise his estranged daughter now that he has been granted temporary custody, despite his evil former mother-in-law's machinations. A romance wouldn't be prudent. Of course, one glance at Alicia, and the two decide that a one night stand before his daughter arrives will get each other out of their systems. Funny how things don't turn out like you plan...
Daughter Dani just wants to get her trip to Chicago over with so she can return to LA. As she attempts to annoy Jake at every turn, she keeps getting surprised when he isn't flustered. He also doesn't seem like the ogre granny Natta made him out to be, but fears that once he gets a girlfriend, she'll be a distant second in his life. When she befriends Alicia, she treats her as a confidante, happy to have a friend of her own. No one is more surprised than Alicia since kids and pets don't like her, but Dani and her goofy dog Kiwi certainly do. Alicia and Jake are secretly having their own fantasy club which quickly becomes reality. Will Dani be able to share her new friend with her father?
Halliday's romantic comedy streak continues with "Dinner First, Me Later?" revisiting the not so desperate housewives of Owl's Roost Road. Witty bantering, sizzling chemistry, and characters that remain consistent from novel to novel make Halliday a stand out.
A total Surprise for me!.......2007-06-11
I admit I had passed by the book's predecessor, Your Bed or Mine, over and over again due to the title. I thought it would have too much sex in it and the title of this one turned me off as well, but due to the reviews- I decided to give it a try. It was WONDERFUL! It was all about relationships between friends, and a father reconnecting with his daughter. It was just perfect- not too mushy, not too sexy, just funny and perfect. I am online right now to order Your Bed or Mine and the other two older books by Candy Halliday. These sort of surprises makes me wonder what other excellent reads I have passed up. I know better than to judge a book by its cover, yet I almost did it again! Enjoy!!
A fun lighthearted romantic romp .......2007-06-11
In Woodbury Park, the four friends (Zada Clark, Jen Marshall, Tish Jones, and Alicia Greene) make up the Housewives Fantasy Club though realtor Alicia is not married. Recently she sold a house in their cul-de-sac to retired Chicago Cub superstar Jake "The Rake" Sims; known for his underwear commercial. Zada thinks Alicia and Jake are a perfect pairing so she pushes them together over the objection of Alicia, who wants nothing to do with men having divorced her neurosurgeon husband Edward Carlton after learning he was gay.
Jake wants Alicia, but plans to avoid her as he knows he must behave if he is to gain permanent custody of his fourteen year old daughter Dani, whose mother died six months ago. He fears his martinet former mother-in-law will turn his offspring into a replacement for her daughter. As Jake watches his suburban steps, he and Alicia fall in love, but Dani comes first.
The latest Housewives Fantasy Club tale (See YOUR BED OR MINE?) is a fun lighthearted romantic romp with a serious undertone involving custody of a child. The lead couple is a wonderful duo dueling with their feelings as neither wants love at this time. The other club members play matchmakers while his too precocious discerning daughter is yanked in two directions by her father who just entered her life and her grandmother who has modeling plans for her. Readers will enjoy the latest secret fantasy culminating at Wrigley Field.

yummy.......2000-10-24
The bright, uncluttered photos and straightforward, rhyming text make this a good selection for children of all ages, especially 3-9 years old. The information on sets is a great bonus. Some may quibble with the 'candy' motif, but the generic gummies are colorful and inviting.
