This is a really good book.......2005-07-25
a good murder mystery/police drama that makes you think.......2004-03-07
The reason I finally decided to give this book four stars instead of five however, was because I really was not very fond of one of the main characters (Merci). Merci is a tough ambitious police woman who is partnered with a semi-retired hard-boiled cop (Tim Hess) who is dieing of cancer. I think the relationship between Merci and Tim is believable. But I just didn't find Merci very likable because it seemed as though she was just driven by rage and hate (nothing more). People like her undoubtedly exist in the real world (I've met some like her). I'll even go so far as to say that under some circumstances, I've had some characteristics of Merci.
The story revolves around the relationship between Merci and Tim but the main theme is the search for a serial killer called the purse snatcher who kills young women (attractive professional types) and drains all of the blood out of their bodies. The story moves relatively fast with a number of suspects and leads being interrogated by the police. I thought however that it was easy to figure out who the killer was. I figured out who the killer was very early, but assumed later that the author wouldn't make it so easy for readers to figure it out, but it was.

Book Description
100 Years of Illini Basketball is just that--an in -depth look at the history of one of the Big Ten's premier basketball programs. The University of Illinois' basketball roots date back to 1901, when the idea of men's basketball was introduced to UI director of athletics George Huff during a scrimmage at the Men's Old Gym. By 1906 a varsity basketball team was in place. On January 6 of that year it defeated Champaign High School, 71-4. Some 100 years later, the Fighting Illini have hoisted 15 Big Ten championship banners and sent four teams to the Final Four in search of the school's first NCAA championship. From the Whiz Kids of 1942 to the Flying Illini of 1989, 100 Years of Illini Basketball is full of fond memories of fantastic teams, recounted by veteran journalist Loren Tate and the amazing players and coaches that put Illinois basketball on the national map.

Blue & Orange: The History of Gulf in Motorsports
Michael Cotton Manufacturer: Coterie Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1902351207 |
Book Description
BLUE & ORANGE by Michael Cotton is the story of Gulf Oil and a history of motor racing sponsorship that stretches back to the 1930s. This large format 196 page full colour book from Coterie Press focuses on the drivers, the cars and the events associated with the Pittsburgh company and their famous logo through the best part of 70 years. The story begins with Harry Miller's Indy 500 challenger which, in 1937 was a hugely innovative mid-engined single-seater that boasted nothing less than four-wheel drive and disc brakes!
In 1966 Gulf Oil vice-president Grady Davis bought himself a Ford GT40 and formed a lasting friendship with John Wyer, the race car constructor based in Slough. This meeting would turn into a full-scale racing partnership that lasted nine eventful years. It was perhaps, the most successful commercial partnership there has ever been in endurance racing, the Gulf Ford GT40s winning the 24-Hours of Le Mans in 1968 & 1969, followed by two more successful seasons, now representing the Porsche factory. This was truly the golden era of sports car racing.
Pedro Rodriguez and Jo Siffert established new speed records everywhere they raced the Gulf Porsche 917s, and their exploits at Le Mans, Spa, the Nurburgring and Daytona are now legendary. Steve McQueen's film 'Le MANS' gave the Gulf Porsche 917 an iconic status, and a chapter in BLUE & ORANGE features photographs and stories of McQueen, never seen before.
Gulf went on to win the 24-Hours of Le Mans again in 1975, sponsoring the Mirage Ford driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, and returned to Le Mans with Derek in 1994 when he drove a Kremer Porsche K8 to fifth place.
In the late 60's and early 70's Gulf had a hugely successful partnership with Bruce McLaren in the fields of Can-Am, Indy cars and Formula One. This liaison produced numerous victories and championships before in 1995 Gulf Oil returned to a racing partnership with McLaren, and the privately owned team of Ray Bellm and l'Oreal chief executive Lindsay Owen-Jones. The team ran in the BPR Global Endurance Championship and were once again successful, with Bellm winning the championship in 1996.
In their centenary year, Gulf Oil sponsored an Audi R8 in which Stefan Johansson won the Le Mans Endurance Series. The story of this campaign is the final chapter in a beautifully illustrated book BLUE & ORANGE.

Book Description
In 1979, Mexican President José López Portilla assured his compatriots that the prosperity of the petroleum boom would reach every corner of the Republic of Mexico. The young narrator of the first passage listens agape at the president's statements, while his work-weary parents contemplate a trip to el Norte. When the promised prosperity doesn't reach the corners of San Luis Potosí, the narrator sets out with his father to try to improve their finances. With the dream of the wealthy Hollywood that he sees on television tucked in his pocket, he, along with the other narrators in this collection of testimonials, struggles to reach the United States.Radio personality Alicia Alarcón invited listeners who had migrated to the United States to call and share their stories. In these pages, Alarcón collects the footsteps of these travelers, through their flight and their falls. Their stories highlight the true American experience for immigrants from all over South and Central America who decide to leave their respective homelands.
