    Book Description

"In Bonfire, I can't help but think of the Beat writers—Corso, Ginsberg, Burroughs, and mostly, of course, Kerouac.... Bonfire of Roadmaps, at its very best, is about where music comes from and how it comes from. It offers us a glimpse into the heart of music.... This book is true."

    —Terry Allen

Since he first hitched a ride out of Lubbock, Texas, at the age of sixteen, singer-songwriter and Flatlanders band member Joe Ely has been a road warrior, traveling highways and back roads across America and Europe, playing music for "2 hours of ecstasy" out of "22 hours of misery." To stay sane on the road, Ely keeps a journal, penning verses that sometimes morph into songs, and other times remain "snapshots of what was flying by, just out of reach, so to savor at a later date when the wheels stop rolling, and the gears quit grinding, and the engines shut down."

In Bonfire of Roadmaps, Ely takes readers on the road with him. Using verse passages from his road journals and his own drawings, Ely authentically re-creates the experience of a musician's life on tour, from the hard goodbyes at home, to the long hours on the road, to the exhilaration of a great live show, to the exhaustion after weeks of touring. Ely's road trips begin as he rides the rails to Manhattan in 1972 and continue up through recent concert tours with fellow Flatlanders Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock.

While acknowledging that "it is not the nature of a gypsy to look in the rearview mirror," Joe Ely nevertheless offers his many fans a revelatory look back over the roads he's traveled and the wisdom he's won from his experiences. And for "those who want to venture beyond the horizon just to see what is there... to those, I hope these accounts will give a glint of inspiration..."

This excellent road journal by Texas Rock and Roll icon Joe Ely is an enjoyable, refreshing read. It would make a great gift for anyone interested in music. This year Ely was selected for a lifetime acheivement award by Americana. You can go to NPR.com and key word Joe Ely to hear an interview with the author about this book. There are also songs, of course. I absolutely promise you that you will love this book!

5 out of 5 stars The Road Goes on Forever...And so, thank god, does Joe Ely.......2007-06-23

Joe Ely is a first class musician. Once you start listening to him, you can't stop, and now he gives us a poetic glimpse at life on the road. Bonfire of Roadmaps delves into the hard life, triumphs, and trials of life as a modern day troubadour, and it is a great read. The chapters flow rhythmically along, bursting with memorable characters, stories, lyrics, and a first hand account of what its like to crisscoss the map playing in dingy bars, auditoriums, hotel rooms, and foreign countries. Joe just keeps going. Do yourself a favor: buy this book, listen to the spoken word cd that comes with it, and then start collecting Joe Ely's albums. He's the best. It's as simple as that.

      Book Description

The first critical study of an architect known for his commercial buildings in New York City.

One of the fabled "three Napoleons" of New York (with Raymond Hood and Ralph Walker) yet almost unknown today, Ely Jacques Kahn had a nearly half-century career, and approximately three dozen of his buildings still grace the New York cityscape. Trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he was known for his modern polychrome decoration and setback skyscrapers. 18 color and 200 black-and-white illustrations.

      5 out of 5 stars A definitive guide........2006-11-05

Ely Jacques Kahn was a 20th century architect of commercial buildings: you'll most readily recognize his works and signature style in the city of New York - or in Jewel Stern & John A. Stuart's Ely Jacques Kahn, Architect, which provides a study of his work - the first to see print. Kahn's buildings are keys to understanding New York's skyline: his body of work is featured here in a pairing of black and white images with in-depth architectural and biographical notes, making this a definitive guide.

      5 out of 5 stars great book.......2006-08-30

Following on Ms Stern's iconic book on American silver, she has another hit. This book ends the lack of info on one of the most important and least famous of the mid-20th NY architects. It is well written and crammed full of photos. I find it to be a great addition to my library. Once again, Amazon had great availability and the best price.

        Book Description

"Letters Of An Imprisoned Mobster" is a satire depicting the droll and macabre nature of an Irish-American mobster, poetically and savagely expressed in his prison correspondence to a host of foreboding, zany and hilarious characters. While doing hard time in Federal prison, Seamus "Red" Halligan, shares madcap correspondence with his streetwise eccentric wife, IRA supporting mother, liberal-intellectual girlfriend, assorted mob cronies, blandish attorney, and his old, contrary, Irish parish priest. There is also an anonymous author who writes diabolical and risible letters to "Red" in hopes of breaking him mentally and spiritually, while he is locked down in prison. Bestowed with the nickname "The Enforcer" within the ranks of his adopted mob family, "Red" is held in roguish high esteem as a fearsome, professional leg-breaker among the denizens of the underworld. But ironically "Red" is also blessed by the powerful unseen forces in life, with a rare scholarly nature, deeply ingraining in him a profound yearning to study the great mysteries of life, as he struggles with his inner dark demons to elevate himself above the ordinary rank of mob life. In the lonely depths of prison isolation, alone with his insatiable intellectual hunger, "Red" miraculously discovers on the Great Road of Life, a cerebral, spiritual and cosmic revelation. As this surreal metamorphous evolves, "Red" develops into a caricature resembling a disciple of the ancient cynic Diogenes, cloistered, fasting, pedantic and monkish; but habitually interlaced with the roguish soul of the unscrupulous mobster. With lavish amusing candor, "Red" elaborates in his prison letters his epiphany and nirvana, concerning religion, love, philosophy, and the joy life. In "Letters Of An Imprisoned Mobster," timeless, irascible gangsters nicknamed, Fat Joe "Bones," Big Tony "The Mattress," Eddie "The Slab," and mob boss Vinny "Blasé" swagger onto the stage of life, sporting a classy hoodlum style, never to be forgotten.

Sewanee, T.N. is currently known for the school there by the same name (or a.k.a. University of the South). However, when Ely Green, the subject and author, was growing up in the early 1900's, his little town of Sewanee was everything to him, and not just the school but the people too, and more. Even in the tumultuous times Ely clinged to this idea of a beautiful sanctuary, but being black in a small southern town was still no picnic, even in this quasi-oasis of Sewanee.

Ely, in a distinct (and mostly accurate) format tells of his life from his birth till his early twenties. He tells of how he was born of an anonymous white man, a local noble of Sewanee, and his black mother, whom died when Ely was young. Ely also tells how this mixed-heritage placed him in a quandary where the other African American distanced themselves from him, while the wealthy whites for the most part appreciated him. And Ely also tells how isolation seemed to come like the tides.

But that is merely a small part of Ely's past as he describes in much more detail his unusual life and that of his favorite town and estranged mother, Sewanee. Because few have ever had a life like Ely, and until this book few would of ever known of one such as Ely's either.

            Book Description

Stanley Ely says that when the fiftieth or so person confronted him with a skeptical, "You mean you're Jewish, and you're from Texas?" he decided to do more than smile and say, "Yes." The result is this funny, caustic and nostalgic tale in the tradition of popular regionally and ethnically focused memoirs.

Around the beginning of this century, Ely's parents (as young children) and grandparents immigrated to Galveston, fleeing oppression as Jews in Russia and Romania. Their arrival sets Ely's memoir in motion. Combining the stories of the author's grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, siblings and friends and including an abundance of family photos, the book continues until today, as Ely faces his own senior years living in New York. Though the book is not a typical "coming out" story, the reader also learns of Ely's gradual and at times reluctant acceptance of himself as a gay man.

The story of Ely's family and their friends reflects the impressive growth of Dallas and its Jewish population in the first half of this century. As he narrates the building of new lives in Texas, Ely also portrays the integration of a minority segment of Jewish immigrants in America outside the great cities of the North.

Of himself, the author tells of growing up in Dallas within the security of an intensely Jewish society. Then he prepares for the moment of his first departure for college in the North, and he thinks of his mother's arrival from Russia as a girl of eight. Of his own first significant step away from Texas, he says his mother "probably knew-and later I also realized-that that was the eventual crossing of an ocean for me."

By now, Ely has lived in Manhattan for four decades. Yet he finds himself telling friends, "I'm going home for Passover" as he prepares for another annual trip to Texas. Once there, he takes a fresh look and concludes that Texas Jews are different from those elsewhere: they have dual citizenship, in Judaism and in Texas.

I think this is the first time this has ever happened to me. I recently purchased this book and as I was reading it I kept recognizing certain events. At first I figured this was because I had read another Para/SAS biography by someone who had served with the author. Finally I figured out which book I was thinking of and discovered that my suspicion was correct - sort of. It turns out that it was an SAS biography by the SAME author -- except that the original book had a different title and the author used a different name.

The original book was "Terminal Velocity" where the author is listed as Steve Devereux.

So what does this reprint offer? A new "blood and guts" preface (which recounts a scene I don't recall being in the original), some clumsy editorial changes, and muddy pictures printed on the flimsy pages of the book rather than on glossy paper. Other than these changes, the current printing appears virtually identical to the original.

I read Terminal Velocity first, which may be one of the reasons why I prefer it over the reprint -- and perhaps also because I don't like being sold the same book twice due to someone deciding to reprint it with a different title and author, but absolutely no mention of the prior edition...

A pop superstar since the age of eleven, Michael Jackson went on to earn enormous wealth and international adoration. But by the 1980s, things had already begun to get weird, what with Michael's bizarre facial reconstructions and skin bleaching, his odd preoccupations and phobias, and his unhealthy obsession with young boys. Before the eyes of the world, Michael Jackson was unraveling, culminating in his shocking indictment on child molestation charges. FREAK! is the riveting, no-holds-barred story of the rise and fall of a true American icon -- a blazing star who spun madly out of orbit.

I cant believe that as a fan I was curious and actually read this book. I have never in my life read anything this filthy. This is not a book, this is right out of the National Enquirer and is only full of complete and utter crap. I have never sworn so much while reading a book. Everything was maniputated and so many of the "facts" presented were wrong, completely false, pulled out of someones behind, I swear. It seemed unedited also, as the grammer was bad at times... I still cant believe that some people believe this absolute rubbish. This book, is a horrible insult to the greatest musician the world has ever known and ever will know. THIS IS GARBAGE!!!
DO NOT READ IT!!! THIS BOOK IS TABLOID CRAP!!!!

This book is so boring that I did not even get to the end of it. The arguements in the book are not convincing because they are not backed up by evidence. And the grammar is terrible! I thought a book had to be read by at least five people at a publishing company before it can be published!

4 out of 5 stars Believe it or don't..........2005-12-03

I have just finished reading this book. It was a great, uh, "sitting room" read, by the way. I can't sell my copy now, because it's flagged. But anyway, I digress. I thought this book was kinda fascinating, and whether you believe what's in it or not, it does make you wonder about what kind of motivations MJ has for his actions, in public and in private. Especially interesting was the description of his childhood, playing in strip joints and seedy bars that his father brought them to (the young Jackson 5) versus his religious upbringing from his mother. I can see where this would create inner conflict....but it goes much deeper than that.
I have concerns for the safety of his children, and wonder at what point in his future will he be accused of doing the same things to them? Is that why he had his own children? I can't imagine him wanting to be a parent for altruistic reasons. But then, I never met the guy, and can only speculate. You should read this book, and form your own opinions. I gave it 4 stars because it was so hard to put down, but it does have some problems with proofreading, sentence structure, etc. It appears to have been written by a british person or someone pretending to be british, by the style of it. But it's still a good story, believe it or don't!

The title alone should tell you that this book is mean spirited & was made to make money by slandering Michael Jackson's name. It's written by a tabloid, enough said. Wake up, People! Stop believing everything you read!

            4 out of 5 stars What a Man, What a Life!.......2007-08-30

I first became interested in Donehogawa because of a chapter written on him in another book.

Who was this person who overcame all these incredible obstacles at a point in American history when we hadn't even freed the slaves? Native Americans weren't considered citizens of the United States until sometime in the early 20th century.

This young man was determined to learn to read and write fluent English. He accomplished this quickly, impressed a few influential people, and then went on to become the first Indian political influence in the United States. He wrote out the surrender terms of the Confederate Army for Grant, who trusted him implicitly. He became the commissioner for Indian Affairs under Grant and successfully stamped out the system of embezzlement and bribery that was ruining tribes from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Then he himself became a victim of the greed of others, and was ousted from office. Through all his trials, Donehogawa kept his optimism and his determination to do good. There are few examples like him anywhere in the human race. He is remarkable because he overcame extraordinary odds at a time when it was far more likely that he would be shot than that he would learn English. His success in the worlds of politics and polite society is truly phenomenal.

This book is extremely readable. In fact, I could not put it down. That is probably due to Donehogawa, but a good writer also helps. This book appears to be well-researched. There should be plenty of information available on this hero of American history. He was prolific and well known in his time. This biographer is objective and devoted to reporting the truth of his subject. One thing that is needed is a psychological and somewhat more subjective portrayal of Donehogawa. I would like an author to get into his head and tell me more of who he was. That biography has yet to be written.

In the meantime, this is a great introduction to the life of a fascinating person who needs to be a more well-known subject in American history.

William Armstrong invested much time and energy into this book. Factual, including an outiline of Parkers life and accomplishments. Armstong includes many pictures and historical references. Highly recommended for anyone interested in New York State History or the Seneca Indians. Ely Parker rose above the prejudices of society and became a man of both worlds. Hurray for Armstrong, who has developed a book worthy of The Last Grand Sachem of the Iroquois.
