4 out of 5 stars Where Theatre Studies Needs to Go.......2003-04-16

This long awaited book by Richard Schechner breaks the traditional boundaries of how theatre is to be studied. He assures us through numerous examples, comments, quotations, and theories how interrelated theatre is with life and life with theatre. To see performance as a part of life and as an extension of it is to see performance with a clarity that has never before been discussed in such depth.

By the end of the book, which is probably more useful as a reference than even as a textbook that students read chapter by chapter (though it does offer great possibilities for creatively integrating in the classroom as it was intended), one has more questions than answers, and that is a good thing, because the questions become more focused and more relevant and more conducive to individual introspection. As a college professor in Theatre, I find that refreshing and valuable.

This is a seminal work, and should certainly be on every theatre practitioner's bookshelf, if not in their hands.

The book contains nudity and language in the examples of performance he gives, so is not suitable for children.

Product Description

Living Folklore is a comprehensive, straightforward introduction to folklore as it is lived, shared and practiced in contemporary settings. Drawing on examples from diverse American groups and experiences, this text gives the student a strong foundation—from the field’s history and major terms to theories, interpretive approaches, and fieldwork. Many teachers of undergraduates find the available folklore textbooks too complex or unwieldy for an introductory level course. It is precisely this criticism that Living Folklore addresses; while comprehensive and rigorous, the book is specifically intended to meet the needs of those students who are just beginning their study of the discipline. Its real strength lies in how it combines carefully articulated foundational concepts with relevant examples and a student-oriented teaching philosophy.

Finally, an introduction-to-folklore textbook that doesn't read like a textbook. The clarity, illustrations, and organization of this book are perfect for folklore students. I wish I had a book like this when I was a beginning student.

Book Description

Motivating beginners to improvise from the start, this comprehensive approach to jazz improvisation offers discussions of jazz theory, exercises based on scales and chords, and jazz compositions suitable for classroom or ensemble performance to help develop facility in jazz improvisation. This complete approach to learning jazz improvisation discusses how a particular chord and scale are used in jazz improvisation; applies exercises based on that particular scale and chord, and; transposes materials for concert pitch treble clef, B-flat, E-flat and bass clef instruments, making it useable for a jazz ensemble as well as private instruction. Integrating inspirational quotes by major artists between each section to motivate readers and convey a deep truth about why we play music, it gives instruction on how to practice, how to construct an improvised solo, and how to tap into our creative potential, and provides an overview of who to listen to, with a short biography of selected major artists by instrument. The importance of rhythm and jazz articulations is discussed, and readers are provided with specific exercises to help them develop a jazz rhythmic concept. All musical terms are defined, highlighted, and indexed, and a play-along compact disc containing rhythm section accompaniments to all exercises and compositions is included. For professional musicians and music stores that employ private music teachers.

4 out of 5 stars Just good.......2006-12-26

This book gives the beginning improviser a good overview of the theory needed to improvise. Reeves is clear and concise in his explanations. I had some personal problems with this book that made it less useful to me than it otherwise could have been. The book is more geared towards horn players and as a guitarist the excercises were way too simple and were not written in tab. I can read so that wasn't a problem, but most guitarists can't. If you are a guitarist I recommend you look elsewhere, like Andrew Green or Jody Fisher's books.

3 out of 5 stars simply wordy.......2006-11-06

I bought this book for the text book in a jazz improvisation class. We haven't referred to it once. It is a "simplified" version of the author's Creative Jazz Improvisation meaning it leaves out most of the musical examples. This leaves lots of words. A mediocre but irrelevant cd is included.

2 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Advertising.......2006-03-22

The book did not include the play along CD as indicated in Amazon's book description. Amazon has not been able to provide the CD, so the usefulness or value of the book is dramatically reduced.

      Book Description

This book is a basic treatment of faculty performance appraisal in higher education. It is written for those scholars faced with the need to understand the issues and solutions to the often thorny problems posed by having to judge the performance of their colleagues in teaching, service, research and citizenship. Neophyte administrators, committee members, and those facing evaluation are often perplexed by the range and depth of the questions concerning what constitutes an effective and reasonable performance appraisal system. This book provides answers to the most common of these questions and integrates current thinking from education literature with models of strategic management from business administration.

          Book Description

This book presents a cultural history of subcultures, covering a remarkable range of subcultural forms and practices. It begins with London's `Elizabethan underworld', taking the rogue and vagabond as subcultural prototypes: the basis for Marx's later view of subcultures as the lumpenproletariat, and Henry Mayhew's view of subcultures as `those that will not work'. Subcultures are always in some way non-conforming or dissenting. They are social - with their own shared conventions, values, rituals, and so on - but they can also seem `immersed' or self-absorbed. This book identifies six key ways in which subcultures have generally been understood:

Subcultures looks at the way these features find expression across many different subcultural groups: from the Ranters to the riot grrrls, from taxi dancers to drag queens and kings, from bebop to hip hop, from dandies to punk, from hobos to leatherfolk, and from hippies and bohemians to digital pirates and virtual communities. It argues that subcultural identity is primarily a matter of narrative and narration, which means that its focus is literary as well as sociological. It also argues for the idea of a subcultural geography: that subcultures inhabit places in particular ways, their investment in them being as much imaginary as real and, in some cases, strikingly utopian.

            Book Description

This volume offers an up-to-date overview of historical performance, surveying the various current issues (such as the influence of recording) and suggesting possible future developments. Its core comprises discussion of the period performer's myriad primary source materials and their interpretation, the various aspects of style and general technique that combine to make up a well-grounded, period interpretation, and a survey of performance conditions and practices, focusing on the period c. 1700-c. 1900. Many of the principles outlined are illustrated in case studies of works by Bach, Mozart, Berlioz and Brahms.

            Download Description

Offering students and performers a concise overview of historical performance, this book takes into account the many significant developments in the discipline, particularly during the last decade. It addresses practical matters rather than philosophical issues and guides readers towards further investigation and interpretation of the evidence provided, not only in the various early instrumental and vocal treatises, but also in examples from the mainstream repertory. Designed as a parent volume for the series Cambridge Handbooks to the Historical Performance of Music, this book provides an historical basis for artistic decision-making which has as its goal the re-creation of performances as close as possible to the composer's original conception. It relates many of the issues discussed to major works by Bach, Mozart, Berlioz and Brahms, composed c. 1700-c. 1900, the core period which forms the principal (though not exclusive) focus for the whole series.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting take on racism in America.......1999-02-04

I was impressed to find this book at my public library. It is an important remembrance of some of the movements that were occurring during the 1940's through the 1990's. Lots of acronyms! Some of the history of the splits in the Party got tedious.

It was interesting to read about some of the options people had besides the Panthers, to hear the view of taking responsibilty, not only blaming the man for the situation. And to reaffirm the idea that a great shift in society needs to occur before we can have true equality.

            NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!

            5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......1998-04-12

For anyone who has ever wanted to work for social change, this life story by a wise and vital woman is a guidebook. As the book's cover tells us, "Grace Lee Boggs is a first-generation Chinese American who has been a speaker, writer, and movement activist in the African- American community for fifty-five years." After earning her Ph.D. in philosophy at Bryn Mawr in June of 1940, Grace wanted to become an activist. She moved to Chicago in the fall of 1940 and began working with the South Side Tenants Organization--a group that had been set up by the Workers Party.

When distinguished "labor leader A. Phillip Randolph issued a call for blacks all over the country to march on Washington to demand jobs in the defense plants," more and more people began attending the Workers Party discussions in Chicago's Washington Park. Grace had been invited to participate in those discussions. She said, "The more I went out in the community and met people, the more inadequate I was beginning to feel." When Randolph's leadership of the March on Washington movement was successful and President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 8802, Grace realized "the power that the black community has within itself to change this country when it begins to move. As a result, I decided that what I wanted to do with the rest of my life was to become a movement activist in the black community." To Grace, "Joining the Workers Party seemed a good way to start," and that's what she did, in order to get the political education she felt she needed.

In the 1950s, Grace moved to Detroit where she worked on the Socialist Workers Party newsletter and met Jimmy Boggs, "A rank-and-file black Chrysler-Jefferson worker and community activist." Grace liked living in Detroit because it "felt like a 'Movement' city where radical history had been made and could be made again." She also liked working with Jimmy. Having worked closely with C. L. R. James, the intellectually powerful Socialist philosopher, Grace felt that her life had been "exciting but also extremely intellectual." She reasoned that she "needed to return to the concrete." Grace and Jimmy married in 1953 and began a life together that was rooted in the concrete reality of a major 20th-century industrialized city that had been abandoned by the large corporations that built it and by much of its white population.

As Ossie Davis says in his foreword to Grace's book, "Through these pages walk causes, gatherings, confrontations, movements, and the men and women who made them: workers and students and committees of the People...." Studs Terkel has called Grace's book "More than a deeply moving memoir...." He said, "...this is a book of revelation."

It is just that, for with passion and reason, Grace invites us to join her and Jimmy. She shows how they made "Detroit Summer" and "Gardening Angels" part of a new urban economic system, and she shows us how to interact multiculturally and multi-generationally. She doesn't merely talk about it--she does it and reports on its results. Grace Boggs educates us in her book and helps us see the possibilities of what we can do in our own cities.

Growing up in the Bay Area I had often heard of Wavy Gravy because of his exploits in Berkeley. After I left to go to college I never forget about Wavy. Bored one day I surfed the internet and learned that Wavy had written a book or two. Immediately I came here to purchase one, but was denied because it is out of print. Due to perserverence I managed to find one at a used book shop.

Oh my. I had no clue that the history of this man was so compelling. The various events and activities that he has been involved in are incredible, it seems as if Wavy has had a hand in every major counter culture event of the past thirty years.

This book is not normal. Part diary, part narrative, part fun. I recommend this book to all who show a passing interest.

5 out of 5 stars Something Good for Earth People...........2000-03-07

Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm collected money in barrels at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 to be used for Earth People's Park, a multi-acre live-in community farm in Vermont, USA.

Feds came in with planted guns, kilos of marijuana, and search and arrest warrants, all based on public fear of the unknown and rumours about the reputations of people who augment their state of consciousness.

Earth People's Park wound up becoming the "property" of the "State" via plea bargaining

and forfeiture, teaching everyone to put Paradise above 'getting high' in importance.

Read about that and many other great, interesting and funny stories in this classic book.

            5 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading.......1998-09-01

This book should be on everyones bookshelf. Everyone should be required to read it by their 21st birthday. The pearls of wisdom that Wavy Gravy shares are perfectly matched by his wit and humor and the format of the book is that in which one can pick it up for as little as 2 minutes a day or as long as you like.

5 out of 5 stars Far from the comforts and stresses of "civilization".......2002-01-09

In 1969, Barney Sabo decided to resign from his position as a secondary school principal and move to a remote part of Alaska with his wife and reside in a wilderness hunting/fishing lodge almost 200 miles outside of Anchorage. Alaska's Evergreen Lodge On Beautiful Lake Louise is the biographical story of how the move was made, the life style changes that ensued, the challenges and adventures experienced so deep into nature's wilderness and far from the comforts and stresses of "civilization". Alaska's Evergreen Lodge is highly recommended reading for anyone who has ever dreamed of chucking it all and going "back to nature" to enjoy a simpler life.
