Fresh, comprehensive, and unusual.......2007-03-23
It's not easy to find a really good book about making rubbings. In fact, this is the only one I've seen.
This art form is accessible to almost everyone, yet few realize the resources around them.
"Making Paper & Fabric Rubbings..." covers a wealth of ideas and techniques. You'll enjoy this at home, but especially as you travel. If you keep a diary or journal, you'll find wonderful new ways to illustrate it with rubbings. If you're a fabric artist, rubbings can be great material for unusual quilts and wall hangings.
Even better, once you start making rubbings, you'll look at the world in a different way. You'll notice more than colors and shapes, but also textures.
I go through a lot of books. Some delight me at first, and then I don't refer to them again. This one is a keeper.
"Hard" is relative -- "Sketchy": Hardly! + GREAT PIX !!!.......2007-02-20
Yo,
I got one of these for my artist sister, then read the surprisingly high-ranking tempest-in-teapot review below, and immediately perused the book, including especially the "Methods" chapter. This title definitely rates 5 stars, without reservation.
First of all for the *superb* color reproductions of a huge variety of exceptional rubbings (i.e., rubbings of exceptionally beautiful objects).
Then I read the Methods chapter sections -- comprising 5 or 6 diverse methods (including wet and dry paper techniques and even Gyotaku -- Japanese "Fish Printing"!). Each is spelled out step-by-numbered-step (with up to 9 steps), including preservation -- of both the rubbing and the rubbed object.
"Sketchy"?? The first Methods chapter page sez it all: Here are the simple basics, now try them on a variety of objects around the house, and you'll quickly learn about the major problems and challenges (listed FYI), and the medium's opportunities. 'Nuff said, now go out and try your hand at one or more of the "field trip" methods so fully spelled out. This ain't rocket science, it's quick ramp-up fun!
The book also discusses rubbing's history, kids' projects, papers, crayons etc., and lays out a dozen crafts projects -- all on shiny white paper, compleat with pre-printed bookplate on the front fly!
What's not to like, or more to ask for?!? DO get this bargain title (through Marketplace resellers) if you're the slightest bit interested in this fascinating and potentially hugely educational craft medium. Enjoy, enjoy!...
Intriguing Art Form.......2000-11-15
Rubbings of Gravestones have been an art form for centuries and Ms. Firestein has researched her medium thoroughly. I just wished she had gone into more detail on how to begin. She needs to include details for first-timers. Her instructions were very sketchy and hard to follow.
Book Description
Progressing from simple to advanced techniques, this invaluable guide includes monoprints, drypoint, mezzotint, and etching. Find out about the best materials and equipment for each process. Study line, pattern, texture, color, composition, style, and more. Bonus: a gallery of images by fine printmakers.
Book Description
Large word type.
Generously sized grids.
Easily seen numbers in the boxes.
125 Puzzles in every book.
No wonder these volumes have the seal of approval from the NAVH (National Association of Visually Handicapped).
They're challenging for the brain, but not hard on the eyes, so everyone can enjoy some puzzle fun. Crosswords can keep the mind sharp, but if your sight has weakened through the years, of if you're vision-impaired, you might have to strain to read both the words of the clues and the numbers in the boxes. That can be frustrating--and cause even the most determined puzzlers to put down the crossword. Not anymore, because every one of these large-print puzzles--125 crosswords in each collection--takes two pages, so they're easy to see and to fill out. And these cunning puzzles will really please, covering a variety of subjects and offering a real test of your word smarts.
Book Description
Puzzles so good that they've earned the seal of approval from the NAVH (National Association forVisually Handicapped).
Now, crossword lovers with less than perfect sight can enjoy their favorite pastime without the frustration of trying to read small-size clues and fill in tiny boxes. Each of these puzzles--125 in each book--take up two full pages, and have large word type and generously sized grids with easy-to-see numbering. It's a challenge for the brain, not the eyes, allowing solvers to focus on doing the puzzle, not trying to discern the words. And, of course, the well-constructed crosswords cover a diverse range of topics, avoid "crosswordese," and provide hours of fun.
ABOUT THE NAVH:
The National Association for Visually Handicapped is the only national health agency solely devoted to the "hard of seeing." It's dedicated to the ideal that visual impairment need not lessen one's quality of life. The organization pioneered the development of an accepted standard for large print, and offers education, equipment, and 24-hour assistance to those with limited vision.
Book Description
The subterranean world of zines uncovered in words and pictures Slug & Lettuce, Pathetic Life, I Hate Brenda, Dishwasher, Punk and Destroy, Sweet Jesus, Scrambled Eggs, Maximunrocknroll -- these are among the thousands of publications which circulate in a subterranean world rarely illu-minated by the searchlights of mainstream media commentary. In this multifarious underground, Pynchonesque misfits rant and rave, fans eulogize, hobbyists obsess. Together they form a low-tech publishing network of extraordinary richness and variety. Welcome to the realm of zines. In this, the first comprehensive study of zine publishing, Stephen Duncombe describes their origins in early-twentieth-century science fiction cults, their more proximate roots in 60s counter-culture and their rapid proliferation in the wake of punk rock. While Notes from Underground pays full due to the political importance of zines as a vital web of popular culture, it also notes the shortcomings of their utopian and escapist outlook in achieving fundamental social change. Packed with extracts and illustrations from a wide array of publications, past and present, Notes from Underground is the first book to explore the full range of zine culture and provides a definitive portrait of the contemporary underground in all its splendor and misery.

Excellent Introduction to the World of Zines.......2007-06-12
This book is a must-read for all art students and should also prove helpful to students of journalism and other fields. It offers an excellent insight into the whys and hows of zines while also maintaining a critical perspective. If you don't know what a zine is, you will find out. If you do know, you will get a deeper understanding of the history of zines and what they have morphed into since their heyday.
Zines refelct what happens when anyone can publish. Much as we might like to believe that this is the answer to corporate news and other canned information, zines turn out to me more personal expression and less a matter of getting you better news than the big agencies. But, that said, they offer just about every perspective conceivable. And, for those self-publishers who stick with them, they can be the beginnings of projects that allow them to find a productive, creative place in society. Of course, some will keep doing zines forever and a day. Whether zines or a "real job" become one's destiny, zines still serve as a forum for dissent and dissemination. And they and the people behind them are worth knowing about.
A poltical approach towards the underground scene.......2000-01-24
underground culture born out of opposition to the mainstream media of the comsumer culture and the alienation caused by the whole capitalist culture is analysed in Duncombe's book in great detail.
The making of it,the meaning of it and the paradoxes and drawbacks it has are all introduced.
pros and cons well defined.Duncombe also draw the limits of the underground scene.I agree with his pessimisim about fanzine writers doing nothing more than just being politics by themselves.[what i mean is fanzine writers dont need to take political action as making a fanzine is keeping them busy (mind and time)]
What is most successful about this book is he didnt just write about the world of fanzines but explored through the social/economic/political structure of the USA. As a political science student and a fanzine writer i share his views concerning the new world order as an everchanging, imposing and even assimilating fact.(is it new?)
Well, i really liked the book even though at times i felt like he is repeating all again well i guess this happens when explaining such complex things (as economic, olitical things not fanzines)

enough with the academic analysis already.......1999-04-14
blah blah blah what is up with this. zines are rad and shut up with the sociopolitcoeconomico crap. who would want to read this when they could be reading something real?
The best book about zines yet written........1999-01-26
This is a sobering, inspiring book. Duncombe shows us the boundless potential of zines and zine culture. At the same time he diagnoses the failure of zines to reach out and become relevant to people outside our little "underground". All the effort and enthusiasm that we pour into zines is a small revolution, but if we all joined forces and poured that effort into a movement, we could truly change the system rather than just complaining and waging futile rebellion against it. This book should be required for any would-be revolutionaries, punks, zine creators, and thinking human beings.
he doesn't dumb it down.......1999-01-21
Disagreeing with a recent online review, this book is valuable for its sociological scholarly analysis. Essentially every other book currently existing on the topic of zines is nothing more than a very limited and stilted collection of samples from zines every zinester worth their salt has already heard of ad nauseum. While Duncombe is a little heavy on the utopic and overly optimistic naivete in regards to the ability of alternative media subcultures to change the dominant mainstream as we know it, it was very refreshing to read a book about zines that didn't seem to feel the necessity to "dumb it down" for the zine kids, many of whom are exceptionally bright. This is certainly worth checking out if you do a zine and are into thinking, instead of regurgitating the same old, same old, as far too many zines do.

Victoria Roses & Dreams.......2000-08-01
I highly recommend this book. As usual, the Victoria people present every thing in its best light. The photographs are so beautiful, that you feel drawn in. The charm of the book is insurmountable.
I always thought that any flower petals on tables needed to be cleaned up immediately. Somehow, in Victoria, what looks messy in my house is very chic in theirs. This is the essense of the book. It allows the reader to enter a simpler, more charming time. Most of us who have carted kids around, tried to keep our homes clean and still manage to work a full-time job yearn for this. It reminds us of our mothers or grandmothers and the stories they told us. It allows us to spend a few minutes enjoying a dream.

Book Description
Every page is memorable, every image unforgettable, every moment meaningful. Take a tour of the entire twentieth century through the more than 500 of the most outstanding magazine covers from around the world--Look, Life, Der Spiegel, and Paris Match among them. Each one stands witness to an era when magazines kept headlines to a minimum, allowing the pictures to speak for themselves. From political figures to fashion to movie stars, from depictions of daily life, 100 years of imaginative and thought-provoking design unfolds. Such titles as Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue set the styles with the greatest artists; Andy Warhol's Interview later showcased cutting-edge art direction and images from photographers, such as Francesco Scavullo. Here, too, are refined, witty, and often satiric drawings from The New Yorker and Norman Rockwell's nostalgic paintings from The Saturday Evening Post. See how journals throughout the world portrayed a monster (Adolf Hitler), key heads of state (Khruschev, De Gaulle, Kennedy), two world wars, the Beatles and Vietnam, and royal weddings (Princess Grace, Princess Di). From Punch and Playboy to Time and Jours de France, it's an amazing, sometimes joyful and sometimes sober, look at life in the last century.
Customer Reviews:
Newsstand favorites.......2003-11-16
I have read reviews of this book in the media suggesting it is a history of the twentieth century through magazine covers. I don't see it like that, rather a visual history in two chapters, of twenty-eight leading consumer magazines from Europe and the USA. The first chapter covers the twenty-eight titles with a good choice of covers and text explaining the history of each one. Playboy and Esquire mix it with Fortune (eleven super designed covers) Stern and Punch for instance.
The second chapter called Trends is the one that I think readers will find the most interesting. It looks at styles and techniques of cover design and finally at people on the front page. Some of these covers could be considered historical as they feature politicians like Churchill, Stalin, Hitler and Charles De Gaulle, or celebrities like Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe (shown on a spread with forty-eight) or Sophia Loren.
Magazine folk will enjoy this well designed book because of all the covers. I can recommend another book, 'Cover Story' (ISBN 0811808165) which has two hundred American titles from 1900 to 1950 in a beautifully designed paperback. Perhaps the definitive book on the subject is the sumptuous 'Great Magazine Covers of the World' by Patricia Frantz Kery, out of print but worth looking for because it has five hundred covers from twenty countries, in a word, stunning.

Book Description
Buying original works of art—whether an oil painting, watercolor, print, photograph, or piece of sculpture—is no longer the preserve of the wealthy. In fact, many people are now turning to art as an alternative to investing in stocks, shares, and property. Find out how to make an informed purchase, when and where are good places to buy and sell (not always the same) including the Internet and the ever-popular eBay; and how to find out if that filthy oil painting you’ve picked up in the local junk shop should be cleaned and whether it’s worth anything—and the tax implications if it is. All the visual arts are covered, with information on how to research an artist, provenance, and a subject—all of which can affect value. Above all, you’ll learn how to build a coherent collection and how to pick pieces that you can enjoy and will stand the test of time, too.
