Advanced Adobe Pagemaker Tutorials.......2000-04-08
With the Adobe Classroom in a Book series, a set of tutorials are given, supplemented with a CD, that one can work through. These lessons are excellent; they take you through the basic features of the program by actually doing it with step by step instruction.
After one has done the series of lessons, it is never quite so easy when one goes to put together a similar document on one's own. The problem is that you don't know enough of the intricacies or theory behind the program to be able to make possible choices. And your materials are not all gathered and placed in such an ordered manner as they are on the lesson disks. In other words, one requires a more advanced set of lessons or instruction. In the case of Photoshop, the Certification Guide, another set of more advanced lessons fulfills that need admirably.
One requires a similar setup for Pagemaker. This book, entitled as Advanced Adobe Pagemaker looks like exactly what one would want. However, this is misleading. There is a Classroom in a Book for Pagemaker 6.5. For some reason, on the Advanced Pagemaker, the number is not given. In fact, it is for Pagemaker 6. Therefore one feels that it still might be useful. However, this is not an advanced Pagemaker. In fact, it consists of 8 tutorials, (Classroom in a Book has 10) and 4 out of the eight are the same as Classroom in a Book. Some of the others in Classroom in a Book are better than the tutorials in the Advanced Pagemaker.
In other words, the title is somewhat misleading. This is really an earlier version of the Classroom in a Book series and not an advanced Pagemaker tutorial that would enhance your Classroom in a Book Pagemaker knowledge.
I think there is a need for an advanced set of tutorials in this area as so much of the material is "ready"-imported for them and the programme is complex. This book looks like what one would want from its title but it does not fulfil the expectations set up by the title.
Other than that, the lessons in themselves may be perfectly useful although the Classroom in a Book publication tutorials are more considered and useful.

The Invention of the Passport: Surveillance, Citizenship and the State
John Torpey Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521634938 |
Book Description
This innovative book argues that documents such as passports, internal passports and related mechanisms have been crucial in making distinctions between citizens and noncitizens. It explains how the concept of citizenship has been used over the past 200 years to delineate rights and penalties regarding property, liberty, taxes and welfare. Focusing on the United States and Western Europe, it combines theory and empirical data in questioning how and why states have established the exclusive right to authorize and regulate the movement of people.Customer Reviews:
confused thinking.......2003-02-24
Papers please!.......2000-09-10
Passports have not always been a requirement for crossing international boundaries. The invention and spread of the concept of a nation-state first in Europe and then around the globe has seen fluctuations in various governments' requirements for both internal and external travel documents. The mercantilist monarchies attempted to retain tight controls while New World migration required no entry documents at all. The free trade liberalism of the 1800s brought down some passport requirements such that fictional Phineas Fogg could dash off around the globe with no passport other than a carpet bag full of banknotes. The 20th Century saw the re-introduction of many formerly relaxed passport controls.
Beginnning with the French Revolutionaries' pre-occupation with travel controls, the book covers the development of passport requirements in the formation of the German nation, observes the great changes in passport restrictions following the First World War, and ends with a review of passport controls in the modern era, including the development of "international" passports for Displaced Persons.
This is an excellent study which shows how passports have fit into modern nations' changing needs to identify both their own citizens and foreigners. The author argues persausively that a nation's ability to differentiate "insiders" from "outsiders" is one of the primary definitions of a nation-state.
Great reading for those interested in the development of the modern state, in the development of travel controls, and in the history of identification documents.

Is Nationalism Dead?.......2000-06-07
The style is less compelling than the content, but the intriguing notion of national transcendence keeps the reader going through the slowest spots. The world's renewed commitment to often-bloody nationalism might relegate world citizenship to the history of ideas that never quite made it; like a currency, it is more powerful as more people use it. On the other hand, as the trend toward corporate globalism gains momentum, we might see 21st-century robber barons lead the way by dumping the baggage of the nation-state. In either case, Davis' gentle words make for interesting and essential reading.

Documenting Individual Identity: The Development of State Practices in the Modern World.
Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691009120 |
Book Description
This book addresses one of the least studied yet most pervasive aspects of modern life--the techniques and mechanisms by which official agencies certify individual identity. From passports and identity cards to labor registration and alien documentation, from fingerprinting to much-debated contemporary issues such as DNA-typing, body surveillance, and the catastrophic results of colonial-era identity documentation in postcolonial Rwanda, Documenting Individual Identity offers the most comprehensive historical overview of this fascinating topic ever published.
The nineteen essays in this volume represent the collaborative effort of historians, sociologists, historians of science, political scientists, economists, and specialists in international relations. Together they cover a period from the emergence of systematic practices of written identification in early modern Europe through to the present day, and a geographic range that includes Europe, the Soviet Union, North and South America, and Africa. While the book is attuned to the nefarious possibilities of states' increasing capacity to identify individuals, it recognizes that these same techniques also certify citizens' eligibility for significant positive rights, such as welfare benefits and voting.
Unprecedented in subject and scope, Documenting Individual Identity promises to shape a whole new field of research that crosses disciplinary boundaries and is of broad public and academic significance. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Valentin Groebner, Gérard Noiriel, Charles Steinwedel, Marc Garcelon, Jon Agar, Martine Kaluszynski, Peter Becker, Anne Joseph, Kristin Ruggiero, Andrea Geselle, Andreas Fahrmeier, Leo Lucassen, Pamela Sankar, David Lyon, Gary Marx, Dita Vogel, and Timothy Longman.
