Outstanding book.......2007-09-18
I had purchased this book sometime ago, but never got a chance to read it. When I did get that chance, the book was outstanding. I would suggest that you read "Forever a Hustler's Wife" as soon as you are done with this one.
Extremely Good!!!.......2007-09-02
I thought this book was very good. I had to go out and get "Forever a Hustler's" after readng this. That one was also very good.
I recommend this reading!!
cHICKS IN THE GAME.......2007-08-29
OK FOR A CHICK BOOK i EXPECTED A LITTLE BETTER ENDING , IT WAS WEAK, BUT THESE ARE WOMEN WHO THINK THEY GOT GAME
Definitely Worth the Read...........2007-08-25
"A Hustler's Wife was a pretty good book. I am not familiar with Turner's writing, so this was my first experience. There were a lot of publishing errors and missed words. I had to use context clues to figure some things out, but overall, it was an easy read. It was a page turner, but not quite the page turner I expected after reading the reviews. By the time I finished the book, I was ready for the sequel. However, I will say that one thing I LOVE about Turner is how she incorporated spirituality into the street. That was hot!! Either way, I would say pick it up and read it, but buy it on Amazon.com.
Boring.......2007-07-30
I love to read....2 to 3 books a week. This was not at all interesting, but when I start them, I always finish. It took about 2 long days to finish. I'm not even the least bit interested in the sequel. Sorry.

Book Description
As a favor for a friend, a bright and talented young woman volunteered to read her poetry to a group of prisoners during a Black History Month program. It was an encounter that would alter her life forever, because it was there, in the prison, that she would meet Rashid, the man who was to become her friend, her confidant, her husband, her lover, her soul mate. At the time, Rashid was serving a sentence of twenty years to life for his part in a murder. The Prisoner's Wife is a testimony, for wives and mothers, friends and families. It's a tribute to anyone who has ever chosen, against the odds, to love.

Although the title of my review is a bit cliche this book made me cry. It's a true love story. You can feel the pain and triumph in this realtionship and it is a genuine portrait of love in the worst of circumstances.

REALNESS AND UNWAVERING AMOR......
i am here to say that i do not get it.
they,in my opinion had the REAL DEAL.sad book really is because of NOT WHAT SHE WENT THROUGH BUT WHAT DID NOT COME OUT OF IT,she goes through so much saying rashiid help her get strong, got her to open up and finally KNOW HERSELF,ETC,BUT YET LOOK HOW IT ENDS........tragic, in my opinion.
Hola everyone.good afternoon and god speed to you and your LOVE one who is
inside prison and or out of prison by now. MY DADDY AND MOMMIE ALWAYS Have
said,"true love is just that,IT IS TRUE,IT IS REAL IT IS FOR DEAR LIFE"
for better and for WORSE. too bad ASHA THE AMAZING WRITER OF THE PRISONER
WIFE AND ANOTHER Book i am reading "subtle breathing"too bad she did not
see how REAL HER LOVE WAS AND COULD HAVE BEEN WITH AMAZING RASHIID.THIS GUY IS AND WAS TRUE BLUE,as now he only in his what? early 40's and maybe
she will realize at 39 what she can STILL HAVE WITH HIM,but just is so sad
to see that she went through COMPLETE HELL,DRUGS ALCOHOL,WEED,PILLS i think she said, not sure but definitely drugs and drinking excessively
abortion etc, so much heartache YET SHE MEETS THIS AMAZING AND QUITE BEAUTIFUL MAN BUT THEN SHE KINDA LIKE is giving up but yet does not want to and if you ARE STRONG AS EVERYONE KNOWS AND SAY I AM,you do not give
up people! remember this REAL LOVE ONLY COMES ALONG,ONCE IF YOUR LUCKY 2X
but it is so rare in life, you NEED TO TRY YOUR HARDEST TO MAKE IT WORK.
(Excluding drugs alcohol and cheating)AS THAT IS NOT REAL LOVE THAT IS
OBSESSION TO ONE Another and desperation....RASHIID IN MY OPINION WAS
"NOT PERFECT"BUT MORE THEN PERFECT FOR HIS ASHA,as he so affectionally call her.. HIS SWEET ASHA.......
i know from PERSONAL experience that asha bandele story is so true to life
but will NOT discuss here but look out for my own tell all TRUE LOVE book

wholeheartedly relate to this amazing heartfelt writer miss asha bandele
rashid wife or by now EX wife, sadly to say because in my HONEST opinion?
Rashid was and IS perhaps the BEST MAN SHE WILL EVER BE BLESSED FOR REST
of her living days to come across.
they were great together you can FEEL his SEVERELY INTENSE AMOR for her
but yet she did say he was the BEST MAN SHE EVER MET,AND the MOST BEAUTY,
most beautiful man inside and out she ever came across laid her eyes on
etc.but yet sad about how the ending of this LOVE STORY has ended.not goin
to give the ending let us just say she leaves us in TEARS emotions running
wild during each chapter but was completely ambiguous towards the ending
but yet we really did not know what HAPPEN AT THE END OF THEIR so called
"love story?
i had was bless to find out LATER what had actually went down between her
and her beloved handsome beautiful good loyal man rashiid NOT by the ending of this book but another way,and i am just going to say that was
sad as i do think if it was really as she says so often TRUE LOVE she and
rashiid would have _________________________________________-
you can fill in the blanks.
but still and all i am so happy to have contributed and bought the book $
was well worth it,will read it as i am still creating mine, writing, just
about done in completion with my manuscript on TRUE,NOT JUST LOVE BUT
TRUE LOVE UNCONDITIONAL WHOLEHEARTEDLY WONDERFUL BLISSFUL PRISON LOVE
Where as to me this was NOT that type of love BUT WAS SOME TYPE OF LOVE
between her and rashiid, but TRUE LOVE LAST AS REAL LOVE IS "ETERNAL"AS
IT HAS NO Happy ending,it's just ETERNAL...T.D.D.U.P.(till death do us part)as me and my sweetheart code we always use to and do say, till death do us part)but unfortunately for amazing as rashiid DEFINITELY WAS TO
ASHA AND TO HIMSELF AFTER "ALL THE PAIN"AND HEARTACHE AT 17 he caused
then to become a real man by going to prison 15 years in he meets asha
his beloved, just so sad they came so FAR,JUST TO HAVE IT END the way it
did.was NOT true love in the end to me,but was DEFINITELY STRONG LOVE
there.
good book giving it because of how it ended in the book so ambiguous and
later what i did actually find out about her and rashiid i am giving it
a 4 star NOT five, because of her giving up it seem later on and afterward.
but do love the fact the daughter they do now share around 8 now or 9 yrs
old will always be part of them for eternal.just too bad their love was
not....
The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13
An epic tale of loving blindly, unconditionally, and without boundaries. In The Prisoner's Wife, you will be whisked away on a love trail involving asha bandele, an author, poet and editor of Essence Magazine who comes from an accomplished, close knit family, and Rashid, a prisoner at Sing Sing Correctional Facility serving 20 years to life for murder. This book is a true account of an emotional journey through love and all the pain, joy and struggles that accompany it. We all hear whispers of tales about women who make decisions like asha, but if you want the real deal read The Prisoner's Wife. Like asha said on the first line of her book, "This is a love story like every love story I has always known, like no story I could ever had imagined."
Unimpressed, only disturbed!.......2007-03-19
The author, Asha Bandele, is a talented writer, but she should have utilized her talents on a more positive subject matter. An inmate is not to be glamorized, but should be punished, only! Her self-esteem, which she admitted to, was very low, so she was vulnerable to any negative situation. The writing was very descriptive and should have been targeted to a more worthy cause. Overall, the memoir was very informative, it described the prison system as very isolated like it should be. Afterall, the prisoners are there for a reason they committed crimes and should be punished with very little if any civil rights.
Author of Freedomtown: A Novelette by Jacqueline T. Small
Great Read! Must have for wives/girlfriends of inmates! .......2007-01-09
I too met my husband while incarcarated and found a beautiful friendship that turned into a wonderful marriage. It was nice to read something that didn't downgrade the inmate, and to actually listen to someone else's struggles, and tribulations with the prison system itself. Who at times treat the loved ones as if they themselves committed the crime. Asha's book was well written, I cried through the wedding, as I felt the same way on my wedding day. I wouldn't change my life for the world and am glad I found my soul mate, no matter where he is, and thanks Asha for putting our voice out there! Job well done!

HEROES & HEROINES OUR NATIONS BEST.......2006-07-29
A Navy wife's 7 year journey and enduring struggle to learn the unknown fate of her POW husband, Jim Griffin. Bound by faith, the love and support of the military community, family and friends, Dora and her two children emerge to face a husband's and father's supreme sacrifice.
Undefeated, Dora and her 2nd husband, former POW Jim Bell, courageously find a new happiness they so justly deserve. Hopes and dreams once dashed take on a whole new meaning of survival and personal commitment.
To all those who have walked this walk, remained steadfast and never gave up, thank you for reminding us that freedom is never free.
WARNING; DO NOT ATTEMPT TO READ THIS BOOK WHILE LISTENING TO "ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT".
Memoirs of US Navy Pilots.......2006-07-06
This is a personal story of three people sharing many years of their life during a period in which our country was involved in military conflict with Vietnam. Reading this will help one to understand what commitment it took in survival and coping with life. The endurance of people in the book is remarkable and leaves one to better understand that love and devotion to the military members and their families does not go without great sacrifices.
Love....Courage....Patriotism.......2006-05-31
Dora Griffin Bell tells the love story of being married to two Vietnam POW heroes but after reading "The Heroes' Wife", you realize Dora is also a hero. Her strength and courage during the worst of times makes her a role model for all military wives.
The book is written in such a way, that after completing it, I felt like Dora and I spent the weekend together as she told me about her experiences waiting 6 years for the return of her husband who was shot down in Vietnam and the joy of meeting Jim Bell (a returning POW) who has been her love (and husband) for the past 30 + years.
This is an inspiring story of love, courage and patriotism but you do not have be associated with the military to enjoy reading it. It is a reminder of the sacrifice our service people and their families make everyday. Something we all need to remember!

A LIE.......2003-04-23
This book is about my family and it's nothing but lies, who ever buys this book should look to them selves in shame, because none of it is true!!!
Could not put it down!.......2000-04-06
I found this book very compelling. I love reading true stories, and this really gave you a feel for the people in this story. You got know them, their life, and see what was going through the mind of a killer. You felt yourself stepping into the lives of these people. Feeling the anger, the frustration, the love that these families had. The author really gets you introduced to lives of everyone in the book.

Stewart O'Nan's ninth novel, The Good Wife, begins with that classic harbinger of bad news: A phone call in the middle of the night. Small-town housewife Patty Dickerson, pregnant with her first child, has been waiting in bed for her husband Tommy to get home. When the call comes, it's from jail. Tommy has been arrested for murder after a robbery gone awry. He doesn't make it home for 28 years.
With his usual practicality, O'Nan kills the hope off quickly in The Good Wife. This isn/t a novel of beating the odds but of enduring them. We follow Patty through her husband's long incarceration as she moves in with family, gets a series of low-paying jobs, remains faithful to Tommy, and raises their son Casey alone. These aren't unique circumstances--although they rarely form the stuff of fiction--and these aren't unique, unforgettable characters. Patty Dickerson could be anyone, and that's the point. This is a story of ordinary lives and small graces. O'Nan's refusal to dress things up (or down) is part of the charm of this clear-sighted, uncompromising novel. --Regina Marler
Book Description
From a writer who reveals 'the plainness of everyday life with straightforward lyricism' (The New York Times Book Review), the story of one remarkable, average woman.
On a clear winter night in upstate New York, two young men break in to a house they believe is empty. It isn't, and within minutes an old woman is dead and the house is in flames. Soon after, the men are caught by the police. Across the county, a phone rings in a darkened bedroom, waking a pregnant woman. It's her husband. He wants her to know that he and his friend have gotten themselves into a little trouble. So Patty Dickerson's old life ends and a strange new one begins.
At once a love story and a portrait of a woman discovering her own strength, The Good Wife follows Patty through the twenty-eight years of her husband's incarceration, as she raises her son, navigates a system that has no place for her, and braves the scorn of her community. Compassionate and unflinching, The Good Wife illuminates a marriage and a family tested to the limits of endurance.
Customer Reviews:
Dull.......2007-05-23
Dull with a capital D! The plot was almost as thin as the character development (or lack thereof)
Good Writing & Idea - Unlikeable Characters.......2006-12-18
The idea of this book was better than its reality. I really enjoyed the author's writing style, so for that alone it gets two stars. However, the lead character, Tommy, is so patently unlikeable and uninteresting, it's hard to fathom his wife waiting idly by for 25 years for him to get out of prison. She is blindly devoted, never really asking the questions most people would, especially about the night in question (and Tommy's history of repetitive burglary). The ending is unrealistic and sugary sweet, so that doesn't really fit after a fairly realistic, depressing rendition of Patty's day to day existence. Overall, I cannot recommend it.
Another Beautiful Downer By O'Nan.......2006-11-08
The Good Wife is another bittersweet (accent on bitter) tale of the inherent desperation of most people. Patty Dickerson's husband gets sent up for about 28 years for inadvertantly killing an old woman during a break-in of her house and O'Nan, in the stark spare writing style that he has mastered , chronicles Patty's journey from young and hopeful to middle-aged and resigned to her life's fate. Similiar in tone to his other books (especially Snow Angel), this story could make Bozo The Clown reach for the Prozac. The sadness is all over every page. O'Nan's understanding of the human psyche and his eye for understated detail give his narrative a powerful sense of realism. He uses real locations and obviously becomes a student of his subject. In this case its the New York Justice and penal system that treats all those connected with the offender as unworthy of any mercy. This is a tough work of fiction and brings to mind Henry David Thoreau's quote that "the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation". This is a very worthwhile book to read for many reasons. Quality writing, increasing one's knowledge base, and a sense of fellowship with others who hurt. For while the particulars of the story may be fictional the author' aim is true when it comes to articulating the common human condition. Lock up the meds and put the trigger-locks on and then set aside some time for this touching piece of literature.
powerful.......2006-10-20
Told in a matter-of-fact, unsentimental way, The Good Wife tells the story of one family and 25 years of their lives as they work through the New York state penal system.
Tommy Dickerson does something stupid. He follows his friend Gary's lead and ends up involved in a murder for which he (and not Gary) pays the price--25 years in prison. At the time of his arrest, his wife Patty is pregnant. This is her story.
We see through her eyes the frustration of the poor as they try to work the system. Everything is against them, including, it seems, the public defenders. Then as the wife of a prisoner we see Patty at the mercy of the system again--as items are confiscated and her husband transferred from prison to prison (moving farther and farther away--to Dannemora and farther northwest, to eventually Bare Hill in Malone) as she is left to make due as a single mother.
Though they do not thrive, their marriage survives and their son makes it through college and ends up with a great job. It's at the end when Tommy is released and they are together again as a family (like they never were before) that we realize that all of these years have been not just a sentence for Tommy, but for all the rest of them as well.
Yes, Tommy was guilty of a crime. Even if the didn't commit the actual murder, he was there and could have stopped it. But the key to this story is not his guilt or innocence, rather it is about what happens to the family, the extended family, the friends of those imprisoned. What is the world like through their eyes. And you walk away from the book asking yourself, what would I do if my loved one was in jail? Would I be able to persevere as Patty does? Would I be such a good wife?
It's a fascinating, quick read and if you have not read O'Nan before, you should know that he is great. He has a no nonsense approach to telling a story that is utterly engaging and in this book, he has succeeded in doing just that.
Stunning.......2006-10-17
The last fictional character I felt this much love and sympathy for was Mr. Stevens in THE REMAINS OF THE DAY. I plan to read all of O'Nan's work now. He's a beautiful writer, and what a refreshing change to read about people so little seen, let alone written about. I will recommend this novel to everyone I know. -- Monica Wood
Customer Reviews:
good historical suspense.......2006-10-07
Jack Hunter is in prison for a murder he didn't commit. Sentenced to die by hanging, he knows he is innocent, but no one will listen. Years ago, Jack fell in love with Lucy Hamblin, but her father didn't think the son of Isaac Hunter was suitable for his daughter. Now her father is dead, but neither Jack nor Lucy have ever married.
In a desparate attempt to keep everything he owns from being confiscated, Jack asks Lucy to marry him so she will inherit his property. The wedding takes place in a cold, dark, prison cell.
Then the charges against Jack are dropped for lack of evidence. He is free, although there are people who still believe he was guilty. And although they are married, the ceremony took place for all the wrong reasons and Jack and Lucy are not sure what to do about this change in their lives.
Susan Page Davis has done a good job of bringing the historical period to life. She's written a suspenseful story of desperation, faith, and a love too strong to die.
