Customer Reviews:
Paul Newman: A Life in Pictures.......2007-07-09
Being that my husband and I are huge Paul Newman fans made this book a real family treasure. We've enjoyed his films over the years and seeing him on these pages brings back many fond memmories. I only wished that more of his photographs in character had been made available. Paul's various character roles were all so exciting like; Juan Carrasco, "Fast" Eddie Felson, and Ben Quick just to name a few. This edition was well worth the money and will be enjoyed for years to come.
While clearly meant to be a picture book, the images appear inconsistent and random..........2007-06-20
As overseas pickups from France's Editions PHYB, the 'Life In Pictures' series make decent enough coffee table books though much of their success as a project truly depends on the subject at hand. By creating a compendium of photographs taken by various sources throughout one's early days and public career, the books are only as interesting as the photographic subjects they chronicle. For the Newman book, the chronology covers his early days in acting school, his famed long-term marriage to actress Joanne Woodward, starring roles in films like Hud, Paris Blues, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, Winning and The Sting, to his passion as a race car driver and team owner at the 24 hours of LeMans, Daytona and the Long Beach Grand Prix. While Newman's sense of family, career highlights and philanthropic strains come though in the main, the whole history is rather shortchanged with a scant eight-page biography supplemented by selected quotes scattered throughout the book. While clearly meant to be a picture book, the images appear inconsistent and random (i.e. for the film for which he finally won the Oscar for Best Actor, Marty Scorsese's 'The Color of Money,' Newman is only represented in the book by the movie's one-sheet poster) and thus fail to paint nearly a compelling enough portrait of what is generally regarded as one of America's most revered actors. PHYB is coming with a similar 'Life in Pictures' edition this fall on Marilyn Monroe (also to be distributed by Chronicle in the US). One would expect that this kind of light-on-copy, heavy-on-pics treatment would be more well suited to that subject indeed.
always a delight.......2007-06-08
I have been a Paul Newman fan forever. It was a delight to see such candid photos in his book. He is a true gentleman and at 82 years young is still one of the most handsomest men in Hollywood. I admire both Paul and his wife Joanne Woodward for their accomplishmemnts not only in the acting world but in the real world as well. I wish they would have included some Hole in the Wall photos and his other charitable ventures but other than that the photos of this great man are wonderful.
The definitive authorized book about Paul Newman.......2007-05-12
All of Paul Newman, with a focus on acting and motorsport. Outstanding editing. A tribute to the legendary actor and philanthropist
Excellent!.......2007-03-16
This book was an excellent chose. I have always been a big fan of Paul Newman and his wife. All of the pictures are outstanding. Great gift to give to anyone that loves Paul Newman, from his early years to now being a great looking older gentleman. He and his family are just beautiful people.
Book Description
“There are three rules for running a business; fortunately, we don’t know any of them.”
In 1978, Paul Newman and A. E. Hotchner decided that rather than just distribute Paul’s own salad dressing at Christmas to neighbors, they would offer it to a few local stores. Freewheeling, irreverent entrepreneurs, they conceived of their venture as a great way to poke fun at the mundane method of traditional marketing. Much to their surprise, the dressing was enthusiastically received. What had started as a lark quickly escalated into a full-fledged business, the first company to place all-natural foods in supermarkets. From salad dressing to spaghetti sauce, to popcorn and lemonade, Newman’s Own became a major player in the food business. The company’s profits were originally donated to medical research, education, and the environment, and eventually went to the creation of the eight Hole in the Wall Gang camps for children with serious illnesses.
In these pages Newman and Hotchner recount the picaresque saga of their own nonmanagement adventure. In alternating voices, playing off one another in classic “Odd Couple” style, they describe how they systematically disregarded the advice of experts and relied instead on instinct, imagination, and mostly luck. They write about how they hurdled obstacle after obstacle, share their hilarious misadventures, and reveal their offbeat solutions to conventional problems. Even their approach to charity is decidedly different: every year they give away all the company’s profits, empty the coffers, and start over again. The results of this amazing generosity are brought to life in heartwarming stories about the children at their camps.
With rare glimpses into their zany style and their compassion for those less fortunate, Newman and Hotchner have written the perfect nonmanagement book, at once playful, informative, and inspirational.
Customer Reviews:
First Half is EXCELLENT!!!!.......2007-07-14
The first half of this book is excellent!! The authors may not have intended it, but the first half offers great business advice as it details the amazing story of how Paul Newman was able to get his homemade salad dressing bottled and sold in stores. It's also very funny. Just an amazing story of taking risks, not accepting "no" for an answer and following your vision. The only reason I didn't give this little book five stars is because the second half loses steam. The first half offers all the details of how Newman and Hotchner worked to sell their idea, but once the book shifts to pasta sause and the charity works, it's more an overview but they are not as involved. It's great that they helped that many charities and established the great summer camps for children, but those stories are told factually and not with the humor and insights of the creation of the salad dressing. It's still a very good book and I learned a lot from it. I will also be glad to buy his products because they taste good and they help a lot of people.
Entrepreneurship 101.......2005-03-31
Everything I ever needed to know about successful entrepreneurship I learned from SHAMELESS EXPLOITATION. 1) It begins with a creative product, not in the search for a way to make money (sorry, Mr. Sinatra). 2) It begins with a product that fills a hole in a market (in this case, salad dressing made with fresh ingredients, no additives, conspicuously absent from mainstream grocery store shelves back in 1980). 3) Time-honored production and marketing methods can also be time-ragged and not right for your product. 4) Ask questions of everyone you know. 5) Put out a little venture capital and don't overreach (these guys put out $40,000 and lived within those means). 6) Don't compromise the integrity of your product, find ways to accommodate it. 7) There are other ways to publicize the product other than expensive advertising. 8) A movie star's name means nothing; it's all in the product and the hard work that goes into it (sorry, Frank). 9) You have to love and believe in your product. 10) You have to love the process of getting the product out there. 11) If you build it, they will come.
Everything I ever needed to know about pursuing the common good I learned from SHAMELESS EXPLOITATION: 1) Just do it. 2) Invite everyone to participate. 3) Miracles can happen.
Everything you ever needed to know about this book: 1) It's a fast read. 2) It's an honest read. 3) It's an insightful read. 4) It's an inspiring read. 5) The part about the charities served by Newman's own will blow your socks off. 6) The authors are highly entertaining tour guides of their adventure. 7) There are a few recipes to boot. 8) It is refreshingly free of those simplistic aphorisms that plague most business world books.
Wonderful & Inspiring--and not your average business book. .......2005-03-28
This book is a fun light read, about a foray into business by the seat of their pants. This is certainly a sucess story that flies in the face of Strategic Planning.
Newman and Hotchner had great and expensive advise from the traditional gurus of business, and for their own reasons they went the exact opposite way, and it came through in spades.
This is realy refreshing in the business world, a smalltime producer of an innovative and all natural product subverting the traditional modes of business. Years before words like "all natural" and "organic" were in regular use at grocery stores, Paul Newman, of all people, was sneaking in under the radar and getting shelfspace and loyal customers.
Not only is their product good & fun, but in another 'accidental twist' they give one hundred percent of their profits ot charities. 100%! This fact alone was enough to make me read the book, and so many redeeming qualities made it hard to put down.
The book is light and not layden with industry jargon, has a bunch of entertaining anecdotes, cartoon strips, personal letters from customers and children, and a visually pleasing layout. The two are never self congratulatory, in fact they are more apt to poke fun of themselves and be modest..a pleasant aftertaste.
The second half of the book centers around the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps the pair set up for seriously ill children. These camps not only made a huge difference in the life of these campers but set off a series of these camps around the world.
The distance of our reach is far beyond what we ever dreamed.
This book will not disappoint, is fun, and a refreshing tale of business and life on your own terms.

A day to read and worth your time.......2004-07-12
'Shameless Exploitation' is actually two books in one - you get the tale of how the 'Newman's Own' started as a germ of an idea in Paul Newman's garage. Newman was legendary back then for commandeering the kitchen of restaurants he would frequent and whipping together his own salad dressings. He and co-founder Hotchner make light of their lack of business knowledge, but it's worth noting that much of their success is based on their innate sense of what is right, for example their unwillingness to compromise on the freshness of their product.
The latter third of the book details the duo's efforts in starting up the 'Hole in the Wall Gang' camps for sick children. The authors are passionate about this endeavour, as well they should be. It's outstanding work they're doing. Newman personally drives these projects, sometimes through the force and magnetism of his personality.
In fact, that's the thing that stands out in the book - this is no 'slap the celebrity name on the bottle' exercise. These two gentlemen are intimately involved in all aspects of the business. There's a comparison in the book to other celebrity food bits good bad - Frank Sinatra's tomato sauce venture is one example. It ran aground in less then two years, an unmitigated disaster. The difference? Sinatra simply loaned out his name and looked to scoop up the profits. By contrast, Newman and Hotchner are in this thing heart and soul. Plus, the product is superlative. That's the only way to get repeat buyers.
As of the book's printing, Newman's Own has donated over $137 million to charity. When they write Paul Newman's epitaph, that first paragraph is going to be a real stemwinder to capture the essence of the man.
The Paul Newman Story.......2004-06-17
This is the story of Paul Newman, aka the hustler, the sting, butch cassidy, cool hand luke and superman (almost). He is an Oscar winning actor, car racing champion, philanthropist (215 million dollars and still counting), successful businessman and an alien (I heard this recently through a psst..psst network). Read the book. It will expand your horizons. Anything is possible.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Cookbook from a Great Company that Donates to Outstanding Organizations.......2006-03-11
I love Paul Newman. He does so much for kids and other charitable organizations. It's hard to believe an actor like Paul Newman would be so active in non-profit organizations. It's also nice that he does it through offering awesome products that help your family out too.
This cookbook is an awesome example of that. They contain mostly healthy recipes that contribute to a well-balanced and nutritious meal. While this cookbook isn't for cooking with the youngest of children, it is perfect for children over 5, even up to teenagers. One of the things that I love about this book is that it has a Vegetables/Sides category that is packed with vege meals for kids, along with suggestions on what to add to make even the ickiest vegetables appealing to the most of... ahem... Discriminating palates. :) The "Ten Tips for food and Kitchen Safety" tips are great for parents who're teaching kitchen safety.
The book is filled with anecdotal stores and letters from children and other people impacted by Paul Newman's "Hole in the Wall Gang" group. Some of the stories are hilarious (my favorite was the one from the 13 year old who said she likes Paul Newman's Dressing because it doesn't give her dad "the squirts").
For charitable purposes alone, that makes this book worth the investment. But something about knowing you've bought a cookbook that helps reinforce good eating, where you can teach your kids how to cook anything from Chicken Soup and Stone Soup, Tic-Tac-Toe Quesadillas, Peace Pasta, Three-Cheese Potato Gratin, Cheddar Muffins, and other great, family friendly meals... I don't know... It just makes you feel really good. :) I don't know what's best about this book... The recipes, the fact you can make them with your family, or the charities you support by buying it. Anybody who cooks needs this book!
Or maybe I'm a little biased... There's a recipe called "Newman's Very Own Lemon Blueberry Cake" which, I swear, tastes EXACTLY like my wedding cake... ;)
God Bless This Company!.......2001-10-13
I am a loyal user of Newman's Own and Newman's Own Organics. This is a fun cookbook. My daughter and I enjoyed making the Jack in the Beanstalk Soup. It is nice to have a cookbook including so many of the Newman products. Lemonade Chicken Wings? Very tasty and a nice variety from the spicy.
Congratualtions Mr Newman. I hope this book makes the kids a lot of money!
The Turkey meatballs and spaghetti is really good........1999-03-09
The books recipes are fun and easy. Some of My family members will not eat beef, and the Turkey meatballs and spaghetti was an excellent sub for beef meatballs.

This biography marshals all the facts of Newman's life--his affluent childhood in Cleveland; his navy days; his enduring, almost 40-year marriage to Joanne Woodward, which broke up an earlier marriage with three young kids; his early obsession with car racing; the death of the eldest of his six sons in an accidental drug and alcohol overdose; his devotion to charitable work that produced the spaghetti sauce and the salad dressing; and, of course, his work in Hollywood, including numerous Oscar nominations and one Oscar win. The book's pictures are half the attraction rather than a little extra addition; they make the book an ideal gift for any of Newman's legion of fans.

Not the usual fan biography.......2003-04-20
Quirk, the author of more than 20 film-star biographies, reveals a Newman that might be unfamiliar to his adoring fans. Book reveals something of Newman's dark side and takes a sharp look at his acting as well. Hard-hitting and not written for members of Newman's cult following. A must-have for the Newman completist.
Avoid this book at all cost!.......2001-03-30
What is the matter with this man? If he dislikes Paul Newman so much, why did he even bother to spend time and energy to write this book? Perhaps he should just take out an ad in the newspaper to show the world his disdain for the actor. This biography is by far the worst, most subjective of all the biographies I have ever read. Please stay away from this book, whether you're a Paul Newman fan or not. If you're a fan, you will most likely want to call up the author and demand an explaination and perhaps moeny back for the crap you've just read. If you're not Paul's fan, you shouldn't even read this book because it is full of personal prejudice and thin evidence.
Slanderous.......2001-02-08
If you are looking for an objective account of Paul Newman's life and work stay far away from this book. Quirk takes every chance to discredit Newman's acting ability and personality. At the begining of each paragraph, you begin to anticipate another stab at Newman and without fail it would come in one form or another. Quirk over and over again reveals his disdain for the actor when he should of been more concerned with the facts and the story.
Superficial and patronizing.......2000-07-07
This man obviously doesn't like Paul Newman and feels superior to him. But that is no excuse for Lawrence Quirk to pretend to know Newman's inmost thoughts and motivations with little or no clue to the reader as to where this information is coming from. Example: "He was saddened but not devastated by the loss of his mother". Where is the authority for this? Newman has given many people great pleasure and he will be long remembered and revered whatever Quirk's opinion.
