Book Description

"K is for kissing a cool kangaroo, L is for loving, like Daddy loves you, M is for mischievous monkey and mat, N is for naughty and "No, don't do that!" This picture book puts a new twist on the alphabet with Andreae's fun-filled descriptions for each letter and Parker-Rees's clever illustrations. The page "G is for a giant, whose garden grows wild" depicts a big, goofy-looking giant nestled in a huge, green flower bed, filled with a goose and its golden egg, a gazelle, a gorilla, and a giraffe, all included to reinforce the letter G.

5 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise.......2007-09-14

We stumbled across this at the library (literally, the baby had thrown it on the floor). It must have been destiny!

This book is just plain fun. The text is funny and flows easily. Each letter has a creative rhyme and then pictures to go with it. BUT they've included lots of other pictures which start with the same letter so you can spend hours (we have) hunting through each picture trying to find everything. It's very similar to Graeme Base's Animalia, only his is much more 'artistically' detailed and this is more cartoonish. (I strongly recommend you check out Animalia too.)

What I like best about this book is that it works on so many levels. It's a fun read-aloud. It's fun to look at. My beginning readers (7-years-old) can look at the pictures and find all the 'extras'. My 3-year-old can find the ones listed in the rhymes. A great find for a fun family time. Thanks baby!!!

I use this book as part of circle time in the special ed class I teach. The kids are still completely hypnotised by it and some have it memorized from cover to cover. I've used it for six months to the point that the book is wearing out, but my kids still want to hear it everyday. Great choice for all kids and a must have for classrooms!

and big busy bumble bee below blossoming branch barely buzzes by beaver's blue balloon.

OK, OK. I am exaggerating. The balloon is red, not blue.

This book is another winning co-production by the gifted writer/illustrator team of "Giraffes Can't Dance." Cheerful, amusing, entertaining and educational in an unobtrusive way, it is a genuine pleasure for kids and parents.

Learning the letters of the alphabet has rarely been so much fun. Max's favorite is the letter "B" because he likes his dad to enact the slightly absurd drama of a bull in a boat who is rowing frantically to escape a grinning bumble bee about to pierce the balloon of a beaver who sits next to the bull. Add to that the third passenger in the boat, a phlegmatic bear munching on a banana, and you have the right stuff for a great bed-time story. Trust me.

Rivaling "B" in popularity is the letter "R" featuring a rabbit in a carrot-shaped racing machine, a raccoon riding a rocket-propelled scooter (any boy's dream!), a rolling robot, a running rhino and last not least a rat holding a rose. The rose is red. Just for the record.

For obvious reasons my favorite letters are K and L: "K is for kissing a cool kangaroo - L is for loving, like Daddy loves you."

I love looking through this book. There is some amazing and creative stuff in here, very cutting edge. If you are a graphic designer it will certainly spark your creative fire.

5 out of 5 stars favourite book in my collection.......2000-08-21

cooltype 2wo would have to be my favourite book in my design collection, i am always refering to it, it's just full of great new ideas. tonnes of samples of print design, samples from people like 'the attik' and 'me company'. another must have.

4 out of 5 stars a worthy sequel.......1999-12-28

the original COOL TYPE is a must for every graphic designer's library. this new book is a good follow-up, providing an updated overview of the profession. it showcases the latest cutting edge designers working with type. the one flaw is the book's glossing over some designers by showcasing too few of their respective pieces. however, because it condenses dozens of design talents into one volume, COOL TYPE 2WO allows the reader to see a cross-section of design styles, without his having to purchase various expensive monographs. a similar, and very good, book is RADICAL GRAPHICS/GRAPHIC RADICALS.

The film Get Shorty was a success on many fronts. It introduced a new style of hip gangster that revised the stereotype of the Godfather series. It also helped relaunch the career of John Travolta. And it brought Elmore Leonard's impressive body of fiction to larger public attention. In Hollywood, such a triumph usually spawns a sequel--a film that rehashes the great jokes and cool scenes of the first film, but with none of the panache that initially inspired audiences.

In the beginning of Be Cool, the sequel to the novel Get Shorty, readers are reminded that Chili Palmer--like his creator--scored a huge success with a gangster film (his was entitled Get Leo). But the sequel, Get Lost, was a predictable dud. Rather than follow that sordid story, however, Leonard takes Chili into a totally new direction. He places Chili on a murder investigation (in which he is a prime suspect) and then traces Chili's entry into the music business. Meanwhile, Leonard reveals a whole new cast of fresh, funny, and flaky characters to populate Chili's world, characters like Elliot the gigantic, gay, Samoan bodyguard who lives to be on the stage. Throughout, the voice of John Travolta rings in Chili's every speech (word has it that Travolta has already been cast to reprise the role) as Leonard pokes fun at the Hollywood apparatus and the task of a sequel writer.

Be Cool surpasses its original because it is so self-consciously a novel about sequels, about the sometimes cowardice that limits the creativity of the American film industry. It is hard to imagine how Leonard could top the multilayered satire/crime novel/exposé. One only hopes for a sequel. Fans of Be Cool might want to check out music from The Stone Coyotes, the band that served as Leonard's model in the book. --Patrick O'Kelley

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Chili Palmer, antihero from Get Shorty, is back. This time, Chili stumbles into and through the music business, tangling with Russian mobsters, gangsta rappers, two-bit promoters, and a feisty singer named Linda Moon. Along the way he manipulates events to watch them play out--plotting his new movie--to the consternation of others. Reader Jason Culp turns in an excellent performance, giving each character a distinct and fitting voice. (Running time: 6 hours, 4 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney

Book Description

After one triumph and one flop, Mafia loanshark-turned-Hollywood producer Chili Palmer (last seen in Get Shorty) is desperate for another hit ... of the celluloid sort. And when a similarly relocated former mob associate takes a hit of the bullet-in-the-brain variety while they're power-lunching, Chili begins to see all kinds of story possibilities. The whacked recording company mogul's midday demise is leading Chili into the twisted world of rock stars, pop divas, and hip-hop gangstas, which is rife with drama, jealousy, betrayal, all the stuff that makes big box office. Tinsel Town had better take cover, because Chili Palmer's working on another movie. And that's when people tend to die.

4 out of 5 stars Be Cool: worms-eye view of pop music publishing.......2007-10-11

Be Cool I enjoyed this title, as one completely unfamiliar with the pop music authoring and publishing scene. It's an unusual setting for an attention-grabbing murder mystery, and there's enough violence and intrigue to keep you turning the pages. Not much sex, but what there is, is honest. I did think it just a bit longish, and the main character simply too capable and connected for belief. As for the music-world characters' believability -- how would I know? Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2007-09-19

I am not a big fiction reader but I have found a new favorite author. This book is a very easy read and moves very well.

5 out of 5 stars Be Cool, John Travolta.......2007-07-15

Another in the great series of Elmore Leonard crime stories, Be Cool is the sequel to Get Shorty, and an innovative story within a story. When the story opens, Chili Palmer has been through a successful film project, and a failed sequel, that have taken him from Brooklyn/Miami gangster to top of the world in Hollywood to just another guy.

Then things get really interesting. After Chili's lunch date is gunned down in front of his eyes, he decides to take control of the deceased's record company and manage a band, described as AC DC meets Patsy Cline. Very quickly Chili makes enemies with the Russian mob, the scorned band manager, his gay Somoan bodyguard, gun-toting rappers, and the police. He solves the problem by setting up his enemies on a collision course with each other.

Elmore knows the world of Hollywood production and deal-making, and shows how a guy from Brooklyn makes all the world a stage. Chili Palmer is only looking to find a good story for a movie, and if that requires crossing some bad guys, well, let's see how it plays out.

2 out of 5 stars Worst Leonard I've read.......2006-05-15

This novel comes off like a high schooler wanting to write about the movie and music industries. In between the entertainment biz cliches, the author can only think to put various assination hits. some of the characters are interesting but not believable, and they certainly can't make up for the braindead plot. Read some of his other novels and skip this one.

4 out of 5 stars so-so.......2006-05-07

I saw the movie, liked it (hard to believe), so I read the book. Quite a bit different than the movie but not in a necessarily bad way. I wish the movie would have followed the book more in the area of Elliot but then again I wish the book would have put more Sin Russell in. The book definitely does not attempt to have all the twists as the movie does in a painstaking way.
Overall, I probably wouldn't recommend this book unless you really liked the movie. It is fast fast reading though so maybe if you want to read something mindless, this might be for you.

Robert meets his cousin, Elliot, when he moves from Ohio with his mother and sister to live out the war with his grandparents in Rhode Island. Elliot can draw better than anyone, but he keeps his talent hidden. It's 1942, and Nazi submarines are torpedoing U.S. ships off the coast. When two tremendous guns are trundled to nearby Fort Brooks, Elliot is frightened by the sight -- until he gets it down on paper. Also watching is another artist, a famous one, from Germany. 5 out of 5 stars World War II... MUST HAVE.......2007-05-06

Lisle, J. T. (2000). The art of keeping cool. New York: Scholastic, Inc.

Synopsis: In 1942, when Robert and his mother are forced to leave with his paternal grandfather in Rhode Island, Robert begins to find many questions within his life. Thirteen year old Robert does not understand why his father who is a fighter pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force in England becomes estranged from his family. Robert and his mother are not the only family members displaced and living with their grandfather in Rhode Island. Robert meets his aunt, uncle and cousin Elliot. Elliot, an artist, has mastered the "art" of keeping cool while Robert is confrontational with his acerbic grandfather. While Elliot befriends a reclusive German artist, the prejudiced townsfolk and their anti-German sentiment, rages on with tragic results. Not long after moving to Rhode Island, questions begin to arise in Robert's mind that only time will begin to answer. When Robert's father is declared missing in action, he tries to figure out the world around him and the changes in society brought on by the war and his relationships with his family. Readers are gripping the edge of their seats as they read this heartfelt story and discover the reasons why Robert's father has become estranged with his family.

Evaluation: Winner of the Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction Award, readers will truly be transported in time to see the historical events of WWII through the fresh young eyes of Robert. As Lisle writes about the tensions within this family, readers are able to see the events of WWII from Robert's perspective. This mystery and coming of age story also examines the dysfunctional household in Robert's life. This story is likely to appeal to boys and girls in grades 5-7. In addition, Lisle's story will make an exceptional component of any WWII unit. Serving as a read aloud or instructional text, educators will likely find this story bring sensitive topics to the surface. Generating discussion of the war sentiments and human errors seem likely topics to explore. Lisle's delicate writing shows the harmful power of hatred and prejudice and their affects on the human spirit.

The Art of Keeping Cool is about a boy named Robert and his family moving to live in a cottage near his grandparent's house during World War II. He discovers a secret about his father while trying to protect his cousin's relationship with a German artist.

3 out of 5 stars The Art of Keeping Cool.......2007-03-08

Not long after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Robert Saunders and both his mother and sister Carolyn were obligated to sell their costly farm and relocate to Rhode Island. Robby's father, an air force pilot, was deployed and sent across the Atlantic to Europe. Without his help on the ranch, it would suffer so Robert's mother resigned to the safe quarters of her father-in-law's cottage. There, along with their other relatives on Sachem's Head, Robert grew to become good friends with his cousin Elliot, a young but gifted artist. As Robby grew closer to Elliot, he was trusted with the friendship of another artist, a poor German exile who escaped to America and found shelter in the forests of Sachem's Head beneath an overturned sailboat. The German, Abel Hoffman, never did make friends with any others in the village for they thought of him as a burden of the war and sometimes a spy, something that for Elliot never crossed his mind. Because of the town's distaste for Abel, he was sent reluctantly to prison several times and while gone, his paintings were burned. When Abel saw the smoke, he sprinted towards his makeshift home, and after witnessing the burning works of art, Hoffman strode into the flames, killing himself and leaving Elliot without a close, understanding friend and teacher. Though it may seem as if that were enough wrongs to go on in one read, it was not, for at home other troubles arose. It was a great relief when Robby's father finally returned to America and life went on, Elliot attending an arts college in Chicago and Robby going on to medical school. The Art of Keeping Cool is a multi layered tale of the hardships of war at home for the families. Janet Taylor Lisle conjured up a heart wrenching read that helps you to see in others' eyes. It is one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The Art of Keeping Cool is complex and has many different stories intertwined that make up one. One of the most prominent elements is Elliot's relationship with Abel and how that affects his friendship with Robby. Another is the secret of Robby's father's injured leg and the mystery of its cause. The elements that make up The Art of Keeping Cool help it to be much more interesting and intriguing, that make you want to read further.

The character Abel Hoffman brings the war to Sachem's Head. I like how his presence in Rhode Island connects the World War and Robby's father to the story and compares between places. This element ties the entire novel to the small town of Sachem's.
Elliot Marks is a complex character in The Art of Keeping Cool. His personality and down to earth perspective makes him a prominent character in the story. His connection with art and the world around him is much like that of the German's. I like how Elliot is unlike others of the town and finds that he himself can be compared to Abel more than anyone else.

Lisle's The Art of Keeping Cool is a fantastic tale of family, friends, and the acceptance of others unlike yourself, and it is a worthwhile read for anyone ages twelve and up. The Art of Keeping Cool shows you an altering perspective of the hardships that involve a secretive family and their war at home.

              Book Description

Gabriel's Rebellion tells the dramatic story of what was perhaps the most extensive slave conspiracy in the history of the American South. Douglas Egerton illuminates the complex motivations that underlay two related Virginia slave revolts: the first, in 1800, led by the slave known as Gabriel; and the second, called the 'Easter Plot,' instigated in 1802 by one of his followers. Although Gabriel has frequently been portrayed as a messianic, Samson-like figure, Egerton shows that he was a literate and highly skilled blacksmith whose primary goal was to destroy the economic hegemony of the 'merchants,' the only whites he ever identified as his enemies. According to Egerton, the social, political, and economic disorder of the Revolutionary era weakened some of the harsh controls that held slavery in place during colonial times. Emboldened by these conditions, a small number of literate slaves—most of them highly skilled artisans—planned an armed insurrection aimed at destroying slavery in Virginia. The intricate scheme failed, as did the Easter Plot that stemmed from it, and Gabriel and many of his followers were hanged. By placing the revolts within the broader context of the volatile political currents of the day, Egerton challenges the conventional understanding of race, class, and politics in the early days of the American republic.

4 out of 5 stars Liberty or Death!.......2000-10-27

It is so refreshing to read a work by an academic historian that has clear points laid out in the introduction, cogent arguments that are supported in the body of the text, and a writing style mercifully free of mind-bending jargon . Egerton combines the best of social history (focus on everyday lives of non-elites) with a discussion of the political mood of young nation searching for its own definition(s) of freedom. I would heartily recommend this work for anyone attempting to understand slave resistance and the varieties of the slave "experience" in North America. This is a great addition to an already expansive literature on slavery, and I look forward to reading Egerton's recent work on Denmark Vesey.

              5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2000-08-05

Egerton does a masterful job of placing slavery within the broad context of revolutinary America. Gabriel's rebellion was born not only out of the opression of slavery but out of the political theory embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the conflict betweent the Republicans and Federalists to determine whether those principals would be part of American life. To a large extent, Gabriel was doomed because he believed that the political rhetoric of the Republicans extended beyond men with white skin.

Most intersting is the discussion of the very real attempts to end slavery in Virginia after the rebellion. There is some real irony that Jefferson - the father of American democracy - was the one that killed any hope for the peaceful end of slavery. In the end, Egerton is correct that once Virginians decided to continue their peculiar institution, that opressive control of slaves rather than the principals that the revolution was fought over had to be the controlling philosophy.

This is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand how slavery fit within the context of American political thought.
