Greetings, all in all this book is easy to follow and has many examples, but lacks a CD with source code. Not to worry, you can download a ZIP file containg all the code. Unfortunatly, they have the wrong publishers site listed in the book. I searched around and found the true link. ... I hope this helps. It's the only way I found it. Other than that, the examples have saved me countless hours.

Book Description

Here is the ultimate guide to creating and extending documents within the application programming interface of the Document Object Model (DOM). The book examines real-world applications of the DOM, including exclusive case studies of DOM-based browsers and applications and provides a comprehensive, language-neutral examination of the DOM and its related applications.

5 out of 5 stars Great DOM coverage with excellent examples!.......2003-10-16

This book rightfully deserves 5 stars. Is it revolutionary in the sense of "unleashing" DOM? No. If you love reading HTML documentation you can get pretty much the same scope at the W3C site (which the author himself acknowledges). It is more of a wake-up call for web developers.

The ideas presented in the book are very elegant which makes them very valuable. The author explains subtle and obvious differences in the DOM support as implemented by different browser vendors. It has been of great help in my work since I read this book.

Part III alone ("Practical Uses of the DOM") is worth the time and money for its real-life applications of DOM!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a DOM book!.......2002-10-15

The DOM these days is available in a multitude of programming languages and environments. Not so many people have the knowledge to properly handle the topic, moving back and forward across different languages and implementations, Joe Marini is definitely one of the few. As a matter of fact this is the first book ever available on the subject, and long awaited one! Joe covers much more than just DOM programming for browsers and the books contains a few gems like coverage of Xerces, Dreamweaver's API, generic DOM algorithms and a dedicated chapter on the future of DOM. A must have for anyone doing sophisticated client-side programming for web browsers, this book will be also very useful to anyone dealing with the DOM in any other environment

5 out of 5 stars Scholarly work on an advanced topic.......2002-09-16

I have a great deal of interest in the document object model, as it is the basis of HTML and XML documents. Anyone interested in working with HTML, XML, DHTML in an advanced way should read this book and learn from it. This isn't a book for people with a passing interest in slapping together Web pages in Front Page, but it will give you a solid knowledge of the advanced topics of DOM manipulation using JavaScript.

The book starts with some solid theory and explanation of the DOM API, but quickly moves to some practical examples, such as some useful debugging tools, and some HTML interface components (popup menus, in-place list editing) which will get you off on the right foot thinking about how you can implement your own interface elements. That's really the strongest aspect of the book -- getting you to think in new ways.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2002-09-12

I read through this book in detail, and I must say that I learned a lot about the DOM that I had previously glossed over. The DOM spec is much more powerful and interesting than what most folks assume. This book gives you insights on building real-world applications using the DOM, as well as helping to deal with cross-browser issues. As I said, it's a great resource for both web developers and web-based application developers.

    Book Description

Recently, we have seen a steep increase in the popularity and adoption of XML, in areas such as traditional databases, e-business, the scientific environment, and on the web. Querying XML documents and data efficiently is a challenging issue; this book approaches search on XML data by combining content-based methods from information retrieval and structure-based XML query methods and presents the following parts: applications, query languages, retrieval models, implementing intelligent XML systems, and evaluation.

To appreciate the book, basic knowledge of traditional database technology, information retrieval, and XML is needed. The book is ideally suited for courses or seminars at the graduate level as well as for education of research and development professionals working on Web applications, digital libraries, database systems, and information retrieval.

This little book doesn't teach COBOL itself. Instead, it teaches you how to design, code, and test your COBOL programs so they're easier to debug, document and maintain. Just open up to any page (there are 5 model programs to get you started right), and picture what a difference these methods can make in the program you're working on right now. Then, go to work and start experimenting. You'll be delighted at the results!(6 chapters + 5 complete model programs (specs, design, and code), 208 pages)

3 out of 5 stars A Foot in the Past.......2002-07-04

While just about every other COBOL textbook has adopted the use of scope terminators (such as END-IF) in COBOL programs, Paul Noll still prefers the old periods. Now that COBOL has scope terminators, the use of periods should be discouraged because they are known to make program changes more bug-prone. After all, the original intent of structured programming methods was to make programs less bug-prone.

4 out of 5 stars Structured COBOL Methods.......2002-02-01

I've read a number of books that purport to teach structured methods. This book is the best one I've found. It not only explains the theory behind it but also goes on to explain its practical appication. There is a section on top- down testing as well as various worked examples from batch to interactive applications. I liked the reference to the three critical coding principals. This book is definitely written by a programmer for programmers. It's easy to read and packed with valuable tips and techniques. A must for anyone wanting to write better, less error prone and more easily maintainable code.

1 out of 5 stars Not what you would expect from a "cookbook".......1998-10-23

I'm still slogging through this weighty tome but so far it hasn't provided much in the way of solutions. This book might be a nice reference for someone who's at the point where they want to address obscure SGML problems, it definitely isn't appropriate for someone new to SGML.

4 out of 5 stars Not for newbies, but an _excellent_ guide.......1998-06-26

The XML and SGML Cookbook is really more about SGML than about XML, but users of the entire family of markup languages will find much to learn in this entertaining and readable tome. Jelliffe starts with vivid descriptions of the information structuring process, with useful warnings and suggestions throughout. His recipes for document structures are useful and cover a wide variety of possible situations. The section on internationalization is compelling, explaining clearly the wide variety of issues that complicate data processing and typesetting.

The price may seem a bit steep, but the information is well worth it. The layout is much friendlier than the rest of this series, a welcome companion to keep next to your keyboard as you work on your latest *ML project. Beginners will need an introductory guide to the syntax, but this is an excellent guide to the process and the theory behind markup language development.

          Description:
Recently, a new community has started to emerge around the development of new information research methods for searching and analyzing semi-structured and XML like documents. The goal is to handle both content and structural information, and to deal with different types of information content (text, image, etc.). We consider here the task of structured document classification. We propose a generative model able to handle both structure and content which is based on Bayesian networks. We then show how to transform this generative model into a discriminant classifier using the method of Fisher kernel. The model is then extended for dealing with different types of content information (here text and images). The model was tested on three databases: the classical webKB corpus composed of HTML pages, the new INEX corpus which has become a reference in the field of ad-hoc retrieval for XML documents, and a multimedia corpus of Web pages.

Structured document retrieval makes use of document components as the basis of the retrieval process, rather than complete documents. The inherent relationships between these components make it vital to support users' natural browsing behaviour in order to offer effective and efficient access to structured documents. This paper examines the concept of best entry points, which are document components from which the user can browse to obtain optimal access to relevant document components. In particular this paper investigates the basic characteristics of best entry points.

                Book Description

"I have a demon called cystic fibrosis, a minor twisting in the blueprints of life, and it cannot be straightened. For that I am being punished mercilessly..." With these words, Bill Williams introduces readers to the disease that has haunted him since his childhood. As he himself grapples with the malady, he records his struggle to find understanding and purpose in his affliction.

This passionate book, written from the perspective of Nathaniel, an imaginary disciple of Jesus, follows this cystic fibrosis patient as he wanders through the Gospel narratives in search of an answer to the question, "Why?" Nathaniel seeks healing for his soul even as his body falls apart, and in painfully honest and often humorous language, demands to understand grace, suffering, and forgiveness while seeking to know the reality of God's love for him.

"Among the first words that Jesus says to Nathaniel are, 'You cannot stay broken forever.' For those who need this Good News, I know of no other book with the toughness, the intelligence, the sadness, and the wit, faith and love of this one." -Christian Century

Bill Williams, originally a computer programmer, earned his Master of Arts degree from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, where he received the Outstanding Biblical Studies Award in 1994. He died shortly after the publication of this book in 1998.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever read.......2004-04-30

I wish I could persuade everyone in the world to read this book. Although it is written in a Christian context, it is a book for everyone regardless of religion or belief or even lack thereof. It addresses the universal question of Why me,God? It forces you to face the world as it is and it forces you to face yourself and to accept yourself as you are. Not that you can't change or that you shouldn't change. You can and you should. Yes, there is pain and suffering in this world. Yes, it's terrible and unfair when it happens to you or to someone dear to you. Yes, there is no answer for it. I heard once that for a believer there are no questions, for a non-believer there are no answers. Put another way, for a believer no explanation is necessary, for a non-believer no explanation will suffice. I do not subscribe to the last chapter of the Book of Job where he is made whole and then some. I think some ancient Hollywood writer added that. I believe that Job's story ends with him sick and suffering----but loving God nevertheless. Life can indeed be very painful, more painful for some than for others, but God loves you and suffers with you. Read the book.

5 out of 5 stars An utterly honest book.......2002-03-07

I've read Bill William's *Naked Before God* a couple of times. It's an incredibly painful chore, because the book is as honest an account of spiritual searching and physical suffering as I've ever encountered. Williams' ultimate concern is the problem of innocent suffering, sometimes referred to by theologians as the problem of evil. In a nutshell, the problem is this: how is belief in an all-loving God compatible with the presence of undeserved suffering in the world? It's the question raised by Job. It's a question that millions of people ask themselves in their everyday sufferings. And it's a question on which more than one person's faith has been broken.

Bill Williams faces the problem headon in a mode that I suppose can be called autobiographical-imaginative-theology. Weaving in stories of his own struggle with cystic fibrosis, fictional ruminations of walking and talking with Jesus as a disciple named Nathaniel, and scriptural/theological reflections on the problem of innocent suffering, Williams presents us with a one-of-a-kind meditation on what it means to be a fragile, suffering, frightened, but also occasionally angry, defiant, and hopeful human being. He pulls no punches in the book. At times his anger, his sense of unfairness, is overpowering. At other times, his gratitude for the slightest of blessings, the most trivial (to our jaded eyes) gifts, is equally overpowering. Ultimately, Williams awakens to the suffering God who loves, who knows what it's like to be a broken pot (p. 299), who lost hope in the depts of His suffering, and who still, in a mysterious way that even He, perhaps, doesn't understand, overcame.

There are few books that make me laugh out loud when I read them, and fewer still that make me weep. This one did both. It's not a feel-good book. But it is one that will touch your deepest core, and in the process move you closer, perhaps, to an embrace of the mystery of God and suffering. Bill Williams died shortly after *Naked Before God* was published. I remember him with gratitude each morning in my prayers.

5 out of 5 stars It could change your life.......2000-11-24

This book is unique in that it carries on a conversation between Jesus, the disciples, etc. with the author of the book in present time. The author has cystic fibrosis and diabetes in real life and is a character in the book as well. He is also a theologian and physicist which makes for an absolutely riviting book. He holds nothing back when questioning pain and misery on earth. The dialogue between all of these people - it will stretch your mind, and you will look at life differently. For the better. I have purchased this book to give as a Christmas gift. I wish I had enough money to send out dozens of copies to friends. It's that good.

5 out of 5 stars This book cuts to the quick of our spiritual natures........1999-10-31

This book reminded me of so much of my seeker readings. It breaks boundaries, synthesizes psychology and spirituality, connects our true nature with physics, and places us, non-judgementally, as limited, loved, children of God. This is the best book of theology I have ever read. God is present, loving and accessible. Bill Williams' broken body is representative of all the shame, guilt and abandonment that I have felt. I also learned a lot about cystic fibrosis and the difficulties and impossibilities it brings. I wish I could have met him. I wish there were going to be more books from him. I wish he could have been my pastor. An amazing book filled with wisdom and insight. Recommended for those who are questioning their Sunday School education, grappling with faith issues and those who want to know jesus (sic) as their savior and mentor. Although God is referred to by male pronouns (Williams explains his rationale in the introduction), this is a beautiful read for feminist theologians.

                Book Description

Naked Before God is the compelling true story of a man torn between two roads. To his right is an Apostolic ministry andand to his left, a more socially conscious Gospel. Dr. Tino W. Smith knew that God had called him to be a leader even before he preached his first soul-stirring sermon at age of 14. By the time he was 22 he had become the first black male commissioner in Calhoun County, Michigan, and one of the youngest county commissioners in the state's history. Smith's path toward prominence continued when he was appointed pastor of a church in Western Indiana at the age of 23. Within five years, the charismatic young leader had transformed the fledging congregation into the city's largest African-American church, created the largest financial base in his community and had become one of the city's most influential black leaders. But, turmoil lurked around the corner. After making a stunning confession to his congregation, Smith found himself hated and reviled. With his reputation ruined, his finances depleted and his confidence lost, he descended into a deep depression. But just as his circumstances seemed to worsen, Smith recognized he was not alone. Stripping himself of the image he had spent years trying to perfect and leaning on God's promises, Smith began putting the pieces of his life back together as he became Naked Before God.

                5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2002-11-23

Dr.Tino W.Smith this book is really interesting although you are my brother n law there were a lot of things about you that I didn't even no myself, and after reading this book it made me appreciate you even more and for those who didn't like what you had to say in the book it was only because you were speaking the truth and the truth sometimes hurt. Anyways I love you and my sister dearly.

                5 out of 5 stars Honest.......2002-01-02

We all know that when we hear the Name Dr.Tino W. Smith, three words come to mind. Honest, vivacious, and opinionated. Last year, I chose to do a book report over Dr. Smith because of a book he wrote called Naked Before God. This story depicted the truth and rumors revealed behind his personal life. In English we were asked to choose an autobiographical account of someone's life. I immediately thought of Dr. Smith because I had recently finished his book(which I read in less than a day). Most importantly behind the actual story was it's meaning. It was one of the most intriguing books, I ever read.
Dr Smith is a man of many talents. He'll tell you if you just ask him what they are. Even though he is honest, brutal honesty is sometime what many of us need to get or keep us on the right path. A pastor guides and mentors to people. Dr Smith acts just like a father to many children as well as adults in the church or outside of the church. His vivaciousness is a flow of energy to many people. Assertive, determind, and energetic people are what make ideas into plans, plans into actions, and actions itno results. Although he is an extermely opinionated person and you might not always agree with him, he means no harm. Opinionated persons are those who you need to produce a desired effect, because they won't give up.
Dr Smith; keep using those dynamic characteristics you possess, because using these dynamic characteristics in just the right quantity can produce the greatest of greatness. Good luck in all you try to accomplish.& Best wishes God Bless!

thrilling- this book held my attention for hours and hours. I found myself not wanting to lay the book down. I read the entire book straight through not putting it down for one minute. I think that it's great that the author was inspired to leave the readers with such a moving testimony.

                  Book Description

To Stand Naked Before God, is a story written in poetic verse in which the central character, No Name has strange and eclectic one-on-one encounters with the people he meets. The story begins when No Name, an adult, has endured a life similar to that of Job in Biblical Scripture. He is at the pit of rock bottom - the lowest point in his life shortly after being born he is overcome by an illness that had no cure or remedy. This illness, which could not be diagnosed, continued the first thirty years of his life. It caused him to vomit excessively 20 to 30 times per week and prevented him from having normal digestive function. His mother, tried unsuccessfully to care for him; and as a young boy he finds himself on his own to function with his illness and search for the meaning of God in his life. The story begins when he is homeless and unable to work because his illness leaves him weak and frail. Others are disgusted and appalled by his constant regurgitation, thus leaving him isolated and lonely. He becomes a nomad searching for the reason for the pain and suffering. No Name believes that he has been forsaken by the highest power because of all the bad luck, misfortune and suffering he has endured during his entire life. He is shocked that all of the characters he encounters on his journey are in a worse physical, emotional and mental state of mind than he. They also seem make his life journey even more unbearable than when he was alone. Instead of taking pity on him or coming to his aid, these downtrodden familiar spirits “kick him when he is down” because they are drowning in a sea of their own suffering. When No Name has given up all hope in himself and humanity -- he is then rescued by an old farmer whose genuine, unconditional, love, kindness and compassion save his life and turn it around.
