This is the best max/Viz book I have used. I've been learning Max/viz on my own for about 4 months now and after getting this book the program has been completely demystified. Max has a really complex interface that scares people away and does not lend to trial and error and that is exactly where this book excels at. The step by step tutorials are helpful even though I'm using Viz4.
This is the best book for anyone serious about Max/Viz because it simplifies the modeling aspects a lot and even helps 3d novices to understand the gist of 3d modelling. Unlike a lot of Max books it dedicates a sizeable amount of time to modelling through tutorials. Most Max books I've come across treat modelling as a step child and dive into animation and materials. How do you animate without modelling?
Anyways I recomend this book to anyone learning Max/Viz it will prepare you for more advanced levels.
Best 3D Studio Book.......2003-01-19
Forget any of the other books on Max or Viz. This one is the BEST for Architects & Designers. I learned more from this book than I did in an entire semester at school. I used it on Viz 4 -and other than a few differences, mainly the sub-object button, the instructions are the same.

Over the course of the last year I have been teaching myself 3d studio viz. When this book finally shipped I immediately ordered one, and am I glad I did. I find every chapter gives me some tips for modelling in this powerful program that I never would have thought of on my own. Every chapter is well written but be advised that you should have an understanding of viz before working through this book. If your just starting with the software, do the tutorials that ship with the software before moving on to this book. The tutorials are quite good at reinforcing the concepts but assume that you have some viz experience under your belt. A great book - period!

Spanning over 1,100 pages, and containing 16 chapters and four appendices, the book covers everything from the basics of using VIZ all the way through final rendering and delivery of VIZ-rendered animation on videotape. Each chapter is illustrated with screen shots and rendered frames, and contains step-by-step text for the tutorial in question.
While the book does a terrific job of teaching how to use the program, the real stars are the appendices. "Modifiers and Materials," "Patches and NURBS," and "Helpers and Effects" offer clear and concise information on all of these important features. These appendices alone are an invaluable reference resource.
Technically oriented tools like 3D Studio VIZ aren't easy to use. At best, the rendered image simply will look wrong; but, at worst, it can convey the wrong information to the client, and force design changes when none should be made. The manual Viz should have come with.......2003-05-03
After one training session and about 10 months using Viz I bought this book and found it very useful.
Although it is 1100 pages of info, it is not blindingly full on, rather the author concentrates on making sure the methods and techniques are fully and clearly explained with plenty of screen shots and repeating previously explained information where needed. You won't find everything Viz does in this book but you will find more than enough to be able to create life like rendereings.
As much a [beginners] guide as it is an advanced user's salvation, this book sits on or near my workstation at all times.
Just make sure you order the correct version (for Viz 3 or 4)!
Good content, BAD typographic job.......2002-02-01
I have recently received this book as a gift. The content is GREAT but the format of the book LACKS A LOT in quality. That is, because there are over 1100 pages and because somebody had the unfortunate idea to place 16 color drawings on thick glossy paper in the middle, my long awaited book got ruined (read broke in two pieces, right in the middle). That was the WORST typographic job I have ever seen. All thanks to SYBEX Inc. who have edited this book. Hey guys, couldn't you make two volumes?

This book is the FANTASTIC. I'm an Architect and so appreciative that such a book exist. The material is meant for Architects (although applicable to many other 3D disciplines) and is extremely indepth without being tedious. The exercises are taken from historical projects recognized the world over which makes them interesting and fun. Mr. Omura had a game plan in writing this book and it pays off big time for the reader. By the time you've completed this book you'll have the skills and essential tools to create your own world's of expression. The author has a vast understanding of which tools to use to get the job done creativitly, efficiently and effectively. You'll also learn to incorporate industry standard tools outside of VIZ to assist you in creating your own libraries for future use. Is this last word in everything you'll ever need to know about VIZ? Absolutely Not. However, you'll be off to a great start with a BROAD SOLID FOUNDATION enabling you to build high and wide and creatively. ENJOY!
The best viz book to date.......2001-01-11
Have tried several other 3d viz books but this book is the best that I have read to date. Gets you up and running much faster than some of the more "fancy" interactive cd-rom types. Just the right sequence in the chapters for you to learn at a reasonable pace and understand the key concepts. If you need to learn this software than you will not go wrong with this book.

Omura's book is undoubtedly the best book I have read for 3D Studio VIZ! It is very complete with the most pictures, the best examples, tutorials, samples, and the clear explanations. Everything you need to know is in Mastering 3d Studio VIZ 3.

Amazing product, easy to install.......2001-02-15
I don't know what the guy from singapore was talking about. I got this working in ten minutes using internet explorer, and it has dozens and dozens of tutorials and free models. I got stuck on an advanced lesson, emailed the publisher and they wrote right back with an answer. You can't buy a better training product - its better than any book I ever got.

This is a really bad buy, I would not advise any one to get this CD. It has some serious flaws in its use of the Internet Explorer web browser and claims that Microsoft would have fixed it in the IE 5 version. This is very mis-leading mainly because they don't tell you this until you read the fine print that comes with the CD. They even encourage you to use Netscape which does not have any problems when using this CD. I think that they, as the author of this CD owe a responsiblity to the consumer to make this fact known before purchase and not to bundle such information with its installation instrcutions. Further more I think they should have corrected the problem themselves instead of shifting the blame to others.
3d studio viz3 and max3 training cd.......2000-04-14
having used autocad for a number of years i decided to look at the visualisation side of architecture and purchased a copy of viz3. but being new to this side of cad i need something to give me an instant start at producing visuals so after much searching for the right help, i happened upon the above title from opencad who are leaders in this sort of tutorial. i found the instant access and methodology of the cd both easy to use and intuitive and as a result i have managed to produce a few visuals albeit crude ones given that i have only had the disk for a few days (3). i will definately be looking at the 3d max tutorials and would have no hesitation in purchasing further titles from opencad in the future.

Great Training!.......2002-03-08
I purchased this author's MAX 4 Training CD and
really liked it. So I bought this product too. Its
just as good if not better.
Most authors seem to think its enough just to rewrite
the manuals. This one actually provides training
on a CD. You follow the steps, you learn the software.
By the time you've done half the tutorials on this
CD you can do your own projects.
Also, there are links on the CD that let you email the
author. Following the steps on the MAX 4 CD, I ran into
trouble. I mailed the author. She wrote back to provide
me with help!
What I love about Amazon is that you can buy products
you would never hear about otherwise. This is a great
training CD. I highly recommend it.

My only return in a sea of books and CD's. You figure out how
bad it must be! Even the interface does not work, I very much doubt this work is done by a computer science educated programmer. Don't ask me the studio max content, it is so elementary you will be shocked. Check out a freebie internet exercise instead such as the soccerball which will familiarize you with enough max interface.
Good Tutorial.......2001-05-12
This book gives you a good, beginning knowledge of 3d VIZ. It teaches you how to apply materials, use lighting, etc.
The only problem (and it exists with all books of this type), is that the tutorials are parts of projects which you have to repeat many times to master the technique of that chapter. The only way that you'll will be totally motivated is to create your own building, and most likely it involes an element that is not covered, so you are on your own. Nothing truly replaces taking a class, but this is definately cheeper!

Had to stop and write in response to this review. I love this CD, and all the .max files work for me. Have to have the right versions of the software though (version 2.0 of VIZ and 3.0 of MAX). I use both MAX and VIZ (like most folks) so its perfect for me.

If you ever bought any Max book, I recommend buy two more books instead buying this CD. Few actual files are supported and most techniques are easily found on any other Max books. Check out Max user groups or just follow Tutorials from Max help. Models used in this CD no more impress today's 3D artist. If you are a beginner or self-learner to look for a short cut, I have no objection to get this CD.

Honest portrayal of Cayce as a gifted seer -- but very human.......2003-09-23
In recent years, there has been a tendency to elevate Edgar Cayce to the status of an almost-mythological figure. You will find none of that here. In "A Seer Out of Season," Dr. Harmon Bro portrays Cayce as a man with extraordinary psychic gifts, but also a human being, warts and all. That's what I liked best about the book. For the first time, I could relate to Cayce as a real person, not an overblown myth. In my opinion, this is the best Cayce biography on the market.
This is NOT a debunking book. Bro personally worked with Cayce for almost a year in 1944, and retains a deep, abiding respect for "The Sleeping Prophet." He accepts the reality of Cayce's abilities, and continues to study the Readings. However, in later years, there was a falling out between Bro and the Edgar Cayce Foundation, and Bro now has his own org. Much of the controversy centered around Bro's more humanistic views of Cayce, as he is portrayed in this book.
The very fact that Bro knew Cayce personally is what prevents him from falling into the trap of hero worship. As Bro himself writes: "For many -- though not all -- he [Cayce] is a modern equivalent to oracles of the past, celebrated in traditions of East or West, or in legends of Shamanism. Yet this treatment rubs the face out of his portrait, because it removes an essential part of his story." (P. 5) Amen. If you, too, are interested in the man behind the Cayce legend, then by all means, do read this book.
