Great book!.......2007-10-19
I bought this book after a glowing recommendation over at the Apartment Therapy: Green site. I thought that this would be just acollection of cleaning recipes and tips for my sensative skinned, allergenic self. However, it is so, so much more! This book really breaks down the real meaning of "green" cleaning, explores the ingrediants in "normal" cleaning products and reveals their effects on the environment (and you), and it also helps you create and make a habit of a regular green cleaning plan. A must for any home!
Recommended for anyone wanting to detox the cleaning cabinet!.......2007-10-19
This book is simply fantastic. Waterproof and sturdy, full of useful information. Glossary of sources for ingredients is helpful, although most everything is available in the supermarket or natural food store. I have yet to locate the "washing soda" that is in a few of the recipes, but I think that Arm and Hammer's Baking Soda is intended for both baking and washing, and seems to work great in every recipe where I have substituted it. I have started cleaning homes for other people recently, and I've used these recipes extensively. I'm amazed at the cleaning power of simple baking soda and vinegar, and the touches of Borax and essential oils can make a fantastic cleaner. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to save money and cut down on toxic chemicals in the home. The recipes and directions are easy to follow for anyone.
Loving This Book!!!.......2007-08-17
I would have given this book more than 5 stars, if I could!
I checked it out via my local library, but will be purchasing it, for sure.
The book is well laid out; you don't have to read the whole thing to get to what you need. There is a section for each cleaning zone of your house, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, etc...
The recipes for cleaning (also in their own section) are easy to make, and come from readily available, healthy alternatives...and perform much better than their toxic cousins.
I am so impressed at the performance of club soda; I never knew Windex and Glass Plus weren't working that well, until I tried club soda instead. My shiny surfaces look fantastic; at 50 cents a liter, who would want to pay more for chemicals?!
I have also been pleasantly surprised at how soft baking soda makes my laundry; goodbye fabric softener.
This book does a good job of encouraging you to become "more" green; not just for people who want to throw everything out and start over, but for people who want to change one or two things in their house to reduce the negative impact they may have on the environment. The awesome side-effect is, many of the "green" alternatives really do clean better, and are wayyyyy cheaper; trust me, I've cleaned houses for a living, and was one of those suckers who bought a diferent cleaning product for every surface in my home.
I have a 9 mo old in the house 2 days a week, as a part-time nanny, and I am proud to say, there is now nothing in my cleaning cabinet, that I would worry about her getting into; it will remain child-proof, for sure, but, if she drank my window cleaner, now, the worst that would happen is a big club-soda-burp.
Thanks, Green Clean!!!
Very good for some.......2007-08-14
This is a very good book for someone just starting out or who is thinking of "going green" for the first time. It has a lot of common sense information and guidelines on how to clean. It has good basic information on the hazards of commercially made products. Everything is very clearly laid out and the non-paper book is a very good idea for an environmentally friendly cleaning book.
What it is not good for is for someone who already knows the hazards and has been green cleaning for quite some time. I had been looking for something more up to date than my first edition of "Clean and Green" by Annie Berthold-Bond but this one is not it. I am looking forward to trying the "Vinegar of Four Thieves" and maybe a few other of the recipes and I have never seen a guide to laundry labels before (now I will know what all those triangles and little irons really mean). But the rest of the book is full of stuff any environmentally aware person would already know and if I had seen the book before buying, I would not have bought it. I will photocopy a few pages and then recycle the book on to someone to whom would like to begin going green.
Great purchase for everyone.......2007-07-19
I really liked this book and it gave a lot of helpful tips about hot to clean your house using all natural products. The book talks about how harmful all the additives and chemicals in cleaners are and it makes sense. There is a little bit of fluff with just common recommendations about random parts of life but it is very interesting and helpful. I would definately recommend this book.

Every stage of the development process is examined in detail: market research, site planning, design, approvals, financing, construction, marketing, and occupancy. Also included are lists of project statistics and contacts, books and other information sources, and development strategies.
Based on 80 case studies drawn from Rocky Mountain Institute's extensive worldwide research and consulting work, Green Development distills proven procedures and practical lessons that work in the real world.
Customer Reviews:
Great Overview.......2007-01-25
An excellent overview of the evolving movement towards green development. The book is somewhat dated and lacks in-depth coverage in some areas. Regardless effectively gets you into the space.
Throughly presents sustainable land development.......1998-12-02
This book throughly presents sustainable real estate development. It answers the basic questions of how, what, when, why and who with text and photos illustrating numerous case studies.
It is written for a wide and concerned audience, composed of real estate professionals, financiers and designers. This book is not technical. It is a conceptual book and guides the reader toward sustainable solutions.
This subject is very large and this book is necessarily a summary, which includes recent projects.
This book does not "preach to the choir". It addresses difficult obstacles to the sustainable development paradigm and provides workable solutions.

Simple & Functional.......2007-08-08
The NKJV is based on the textus receptus, readable, trustworthy, faithful to the original text, similar in poetic cadence to the KJV, and very suitable for memorization and ministering. If you want a modern version cleaner for sharing with this generation than the KJV, the NKJV is the way to go.
For old schoolers the layout of this Bible is very pleasing: Red Letter, dark font on both black letters and red, center column cross references, decent size print, compact, with book introductions, and a small-servicable concordance.
The maps leave a lot to be desired and after owning 10 of these I note that after about 3 years the bindings crack at the point where the maps start. This is not such a terrible thing for any book that gets used daily and is transported in all weather conditions outside the home.
I am ordering two more now to have one on file for replacement in a few years. The NKJV market in large print and format of this type is rare and becoming even harder to replace. Broadman and Holman still offer it, but Thomas Nelson pretty much own the rights, so I dont know how much longer this version will be available.
My only suggestion would be that BH manufacture an uber version of this text: Like the Thomas Nelson Signature Series Bibles; fine leather and uprgaded paper. I would definitely buy that Bible. Unfortunately for true Bible lovers, the NKJV does not appear to being treated very well by its translation stewards right now. Why NKJV stewards insist on following the ultra small print trend in Bibles is beyond me. Profits on all Bibles appears to have replaced the old conviction that providing the word of God to God's people is a sacred trust.
High quality, but the print is only 10 point.......2007-06-02
While it costs more than twice as much as the inexpensive imitation leather Nelson Bibles, the quality in this Bible is quite evident. The leather cover is the real deal, and the maps are lovely. This bible is gift quality. The print however is not that big, it is only 10 point. This is a nice Bible for the money.
Satisfied Customer.......2007-05-14
I am very happy I purchased this Bible. The quality is wonderful, it is light, thin and the large print is a relief. I am a Bible teacher and will use this Bible when I travel to teaching engagements because it is easy to carry, easy to read and a red letter edition. Thanks Amazon, this was a great purchase!
Poor Binding.......2006-07-27
This is a pretty good Bible--I mean the format and size are very nice to have. It's a great "preaching" Bible... but there are a couple problems. The first BIG problem is the binding. Even if you buy the leather version you will have problems with the binding in the same places every time (I've bought 3 of these on different occasions and have experienced the same problems with every one). The second problem is the lack of space for writers like myself--this I consider a smaller problem since it's designed that way. However, I do not think the design of the binding meant for it to be so fragile.
Best NKJV Print on Genuine Leather.......2006-04-24
I have found that this is the best NKJV print on genuine leather that I have found. The following are the reasons:
1. This is a large-print edition. It is smaller than "giant-print" but makes reading much more comfortable. It helps a lot when used for preaching as I do not need to strain to read the words.
2. This is a ultrathin edition. It is much easier to slip this bible into a bag and does not take up that much space in width.
3. It is a genuine leather binding. I have had many different bindings for bibles but I have found this the best. Bonded leather bindings tends to split at the spine and other places after awhile, and it would give way after much use. The genuine leather does not split as easily and is much more hardy. The hardcovers are a little inflexible while carrying to preach or to read, and is not able to open as wide as a soft binding.
4. This is a NKJV translation. Every edition, translation and paraphrase of the bible has its pros and cons. Comparatively, NKJV is well balanced between readability and accuracy.
5. The leather color is black. This may be a personal perference, but black does not dirty easily.
Hence, I recommend this as one of the best bibles to travel with and preach from.

Who would have thought a memoir about going blind and suffering from severe depression could be so funny? From the opening scene, when an uncle who has the same degenerative eye disease warns 12-year-old Jim, "You better start learning Braille now," Knipfel defies all the conventional responses to adversity. You can't help but laugh when a doctor "who had obviously been playing hooky when they were teaching sensitivity in medical school" tells a wailing woman who has just learned her son is dying, "Please sit down... [he] has a good two or three weeks yet." The hard-edged humor comes naturally to a guy who as a grad student formed a band called the Pain Amplifiers; we're not exactly surprised to learn that his column for an alternative newspaper prompted hate mail as well as fan letters. Knipfel's complete lack of self-pity conveys the particulars of failing vision with blunt immediacy (he wears a wide-brimmed hat so he'll feel impending lampposts before he knocks himself senseless against them). His zest for the world's absurdities makes this book an exhilarating guide to "the weirdness parade I have been marching in my whole life." --Wendy Smith
Book Description
The acclaimed comic memoir by the popular New York Press columnist. ...
"An extraordinary emotional ride. It is maniacally aglow with a born storyteller's gifts of observation and an amiably deranged sense of humor."-- TheThomas Pynchon
"Knipfel may be blind, but his artistic vision is as stunning as a sunset over the Brooklyn Bridge....It's not like any of the other memoirs you're reading."-- Entertainment Weekly
"Life hasn't been easy for Jim Knipfel. He's blind. He has an inoperable brain tumor. He's got a drinking problem. He's been in and out of mental hospitals. He's attempted suicide. But he's managed to keep his sense of humor..."-- Boston Herald
"Funny, heroic, and yes, entertaining...remarkable elan and some wicked black humor."-- New York Times
"Illuminating...Knipfel's memoirs focus on a time when his marriage was failing, his visual field was shrinking, and an inoperable tumor in his brain was giving him seizures and suicidal depression. While this may sound like the makings of a dreary and pitiful tale of woe, it is anything but. Knipfel's bizarre antics...provoke laughter, not tears...sharp and wickedly funny."-- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
"A vision of brave and astonishing impact."-- Mirabella
"A book that can only be called inspirational...he never loses his appreciation for the basic absurdity of life."-- Newsday
"A modern Odyssey."-- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
"For a guy who has attempted suicide several times, he sure is funny."-- Chicago Sun-Times
Customer Reviews:
Snarky and Bittersweet.......2006-07-31
This memoir is funny, clever and engaging. Knipfel is an interesting guy to say the least. If "Slackjaw" hadn't come highly recomended to me, there's no way I would have read a book about a mentally-ill, guy who tried to kill himself several times before going blind. However, since I did, it was rewarding, humorous, proud and never depressing.
Very important book for rehabilitation teachers .......2006-05-01
The book is most interesting. Knipfel knows how to tell a story; he tells in a sarcastic way the story of his life. Very important book for rehabilitation teachers for the blind and social workers.
Like reading a fifteen-year-old's journal.......2004-01-16
Jim Knipfel is an idiot, truly. He's the type of person that delivers stories on characters like Werner Herzog and Ed Gein, very self-aggrandising, and, most significant to his idiot status, fails to understand anything at all. Want to be like Jim Knipfel? Quickly read a story in the newspaper, spend the next ten years watching The Nanny, then write a story based on what you read in the newspaper, and then assume the role of expert on the whole thing.
Inheritor of the Beats?.......2003-11-28
I like this book. I like Jim Knipfel's writing in general. He's quite good, and seems to be a naturally gifted author who's learned the ropes from his years as a columnist. In a strange sort of way, I consider him to be yet another link in the line of writers first described in the 1950s as the Beats. He measures up to many of those great truthsayers, and I always look forward to more work from Mr. Knipfel.
Long may he linger.
HURRY - BUY SLACKJAW, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.......2002-02-12
Slackjaw is an entertaining memoir about the author's past. Jim writes with raw honesty and the book has a contagious personal quality that makes it hard to stop reading. Even though people may go through different hardships than the author, he writes in a way in which all people can relate. Through all the hard times, Jim takes the time to look at the ironic, hilarious details that make life, life.
This book is highly recommended...
