    Book Description

Brought together in this distinguished annual are all of the fine graphic design showpieces that appeared in AIGA's juried exhibitions during the 1998-1999 season. Defining standards of excellence in American design, the works that appear in the annual were selected from thousands of entries, spanning every category of print and multi-media graphics. Jurors evaluated entries in terms of both aesthetic criteria and effectiveness in meeting the client's objective. Project statements reveal the challenges designers faced in executing the notable work. Also featured are the 1999 Gold Medalists-Tibor Kalman, Katherine McCoy, and Steven Heller, who are profiled in biographical essays and retrospective portfolios of their work.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding examples of graphic design.......2000-06-12

Not only is this a collection of the best and brightest works in graphic design today, it's an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to know the direction in which the field is moving today. This book is illustrated with plenty of pictures of recipients of the AIGA's medals, and is also a good place to go for inspiration because it just contains SO MUCH STUFF!

                    Book Description

From pre-Columbian creation myths and the first European voyages of discovery and conquest to the Age of Reagan, here is "nothing less than a unified history of the Western Hemisphere . . . recounted in vivid prose."--The New Yorker . A unique and epic history, Eduardo Galeano's Memory of Fire trilogy is an outstanding Latin American eye view of the making of the New World. From its first English language publication in 1985 it has been recognized as a classic of political engagement, original research, and literary form.

While it lacks the originality of the first volume and the emotional intensity of the third, this second volume in Galeano's "Memory of Fire" trilogy is still extraordinary, essential reading for anyone who wishes to better understand the Western Hemisphere. (That should be everyone, right?)

5 out of 5 stars The Epic of the Americas Continues and Absorbs...........2000-05-16

This second volume leaves off where Galeano's "Genesis" left off...it continues in the same style with history breathing just as fresh as today's headlines...the struggle and minglings of many worlds come together clashing for better or for worse in the Americas, producing something entirely new...countries are born, with bloodshed and lust... I recommend this book on Latino history because it tells history passionately driven by the authors own views which he does not even pretend to hide...the writing itself is beautiful...the prose becomes poetic...and he weaves from many sources...I will definitely read this work again!

                    Product Description

For at least 20,000 years, masking has been a mark of cultural evolution and an indication of magical-religious sophistication in society. Ancient cave paintings depict figures with animal masks; early Egyptians left images of humans with animal “heads”; and Incan burial chambers contained masks of gold to cover the faces of the dead. Ancient peoples wore masks to survive the elements, succeed in combat, confirm their identity, attract spouses, celebrate important events, and venerate their personal and collective gods. Current literature suggests an early association between masking and pietistic practice. These and many other uses of masking are an important part of the record of human existence, shedding light on the origins of belief systems and spiritualism in the earliest human societies. Placing the mask in the broader context of the evolution of humanity, this book argues that the mask itself should not be assessed in the service of any single function. Instead, the chapters integrate all functions to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mask as a powerful cultural phenomenon—a means by which individual communities attempted to communicate their dignity and sense of purpose, as well as to establish a continuum between the natural and supernatural worlds. The book addresses the distinctive environments within which masks flourished, and the mask is analyzed as a manifestation of art, ethnology and anthropology. The discussion is augmented by more than 100 illustrations of masks chosen for what they reveal about fundamental emotional and spiritual perspectives, as well as for their different styles, shapes, and designs.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Masks Worldwide.......2006-03-12

Discussions range from surveys of masks as communicators and expressions in societies to masks as communal and spiritual symbols. Black and white mask representations peppered throughout add to a scholarly survey of the role and changing meaning of masks in world beliefs. The result is a set of invaluable observations of masks and their underlying roles in societies, and will provide artists with an invaluable set of cultural and social insights with which to better understand the overall meaning and importance of masks around the world.

5 out of 5 stars An examination of the role of masks throughout human history.......2005-10-12

Professor of museum science Gary Edson presents Masks And Masking: Faces Of Tradition And Belief Worldwide, an examination of the role of masks throughout human history. Exploring cultural uses of masks from creating a substitute face to as a symbol of magic to as communal symbols and couriers of myth, Masks And Masking argues persuasively that masks should not be assessed as performing a single function across the complex turn of ages and cultures. More than 100 detailed black-and-white drawings illustrate this scholarly and thoughtful discourse.

4 out of 5 stars Another Reaktion Books Success!.......2005-06-13

The book begins with a quote by Origen: "No one can know the origin of evil who has not grasped the truth about the so-called Devil and his angels, and who he was before he became a Devil and how he became a Devil..."

This understanding is exactly what the author sets out to provide and he does so with great mastery and interest.

Luther Link knows his subject matter incredibly well. The whole point of the "Picturing History" series by Reaktion Books is to study the artwork of a given subject and use this as a primary source in understanding that subject's history. In many ways, I have found this to be a far more accurate and useful way of learning the history of the subject and Reaktion Books are leaders in the field.

I found the histories of the devil to be fascinating - at times, he was the archenemy, at other times he seemed essential to the concept of God or even as His handmaiden. In other examples he was a mere slave of God and it was not him that did the soul-snatching but he simply suffered eternal damnation along with all of the humans who were sent to Hell by God. The pagan influence was surprising - Lucifer once being a good character but like many pagan ideas, was turned bad by Christianity. This is a mere drop in the bucket to the information provided in _The Devil_.

The art is rich and liberally sprinkled throughout the book. The source of the images is given and we become privy to information doubtfully unearthed before - where the horns, pitchfork, and tail originate. The naked versus the hairy devil - the deformations. Most strikingly, perhaps, is the morphing from angel to demon. The "angelic" and "demonical" behaviors are explored and found to be quite diverse in history - angels often being quite demonic themselves. One piece I found especially powerful was the reproduction of Signorelli's "The Damned." I immediately went surfing to find myself a print!

There is a period of time where very few artpieces are found depicting the devil. The author speculates why this may be but he doesn't entertain the first thought that came to my mind - perhaps it was seen as blasphemous, or inviting evil, to do so. Of course this is just another speculation and one no where near as grounded as those of the author. But considering the great amount of superstition to be found in history, I expect there was at least an inkling of that - much like people were once forbidden to create artistic renditions of God - for other reasons.

With so many books now coming out on the history of the devil or the hierarchy of hell, largely for sensationalist reasons, this book really must be read to show how far superior it is to others. The scholarship is of highest quality which is likely why Reaktion Books caters more to academics than to laypeople. I find this unfortunate though. As a layperson, I highly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who finds this subject interesting. Reaktion Books would be wise to follow Taschen and Phaidon's lead in bringing their books to a wider audience.

The first chapter doesn't pull the reader in as it should but it's definitely worth sticking it out because in later chapters it becomes a page turner. Not intimidating in any way.

Especially for those trying to make sense of the many stories told about the devil, this book provides our best possibility and it leaves the reader satisfied with an understanding that can be drawn on for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars For novices and hobbyists.......2007-01-31

I bought the book hoping it would teach me how to make creams and lotions from scratch. But what it does is provide you with recipes on how to make your custom-blended product with ready made bases which you have to purchase. So it was not very useful to me.

The information on essential oils is basic and scarce. I feel the recipes could be more sophisticated and in greater number. This book contains mostly kitchen DIY recipes.

All in all a good book purely for beginners.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing - not from scratch.......2006-11-23

The recipes assume you are starting with a basic lotion, shampoo or conditioner base. There are no recipes for these bases. Starting from a commercial base takes all of the fun out. There are many other books available that include the basic base recipes as well as the suggested additives. Try "Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions" by Donna Maria if you want some serious recipes.

2 out of 5 stars Not from scratch.......2006-09-24

The title suggests from scratch but as everyone has said so far, lotion recipes suggest you do additives to a lotion base. Nice recipes though.

2 out of 5 stars sparce info on the basic recipes.......2006-09-12

I bought this book hoping to learn how to make basic skin care products, only to discover that the vast majority of recipes call for a "lotion base" or the like. The book does not give instructions on how to make a "lotion base" and the list of suppliers was pretty grim.
She does seem to have a very keen sense of fragrance combination and the photos are fun but overall it did not provide much useful info about making skin-care products from scratch.

3 out of 5 stars Good book on wanting to learn about cosmetics.......2006-01-19

Found this book on amazon. Nice information on what goes into cosmetics. However, does not necessarily give information for from-scratch lotions. Did find a nice natural lotion base to use at this site:

This book has beautiful photography and a striking diversity of masks. I wanted to buy this book after visiting a native history museum in Anchorage, AK. They had this book available as a reference with their collection of native masks. As an artist, I find the masks truly inspiring and this book gives lots of great examples!

A unique collection of native American masks who's beauty is breath taking. The amazing pictures contained here show in great detail the talent of those who created them. Each mask has a description of its use and they are shown in all their glory - each one has been re-created using traditional methods so that you get to see them as they were intened to be seen. Invaluable!

If someone actually had a party where everyone were wearing these masks it would be a great sight. I doubt anyone would have the heart, however, to actually tear out and use these great colorful masks.

                          Book Description

This book is a translation from the German edition of Das Ewige Antlitz. Death masks command our utmost reverence, for the face is symbolic and perpetuates the final impression of a human spirit whom we once knew, or who had made his mark on all men's minds. This work endeavors to assemble and collate material from the widest possible field. As the reader glances through the illustrations, he will at once notice a limitation. There is no mask dating from antiquity and the question of the use of death masks in those ages is not dealt with. The material as such obliged the author to adopt this restriction in order to confine the subject within some bounds. Therefore it only embraces the Christian culture of the West and of that period, only from about 1400 up to the present day.
