Book Description

Pugs are funny, affectionate, and endearingly odd, and to love one is to be under its spell. Pug owners are passionate, and have even been known to express their devotion in love songs and poetry-and Woodleigh Marx Hubbard is no exception! She is, in her own words, "besotted" with her pug, Oliver Wink.

Perfect for pug aficionados and dog lovers everywhere, her whimsical tribute to pugs captures their exuberance, as her energetic illustrations celebrate and applaud the many colorful sides of this truly unique little dog.

4 out of 5 stars Very adorable book for the pug lover!.......2003-12-04

I just got this book and I couldn't wait to read it. It is a very cute book. The first picture in the book of the pug sitting is exactly like my pug that I own. The only thing I was a little disappointed with was that I thought it was a specific story about a pug. However, it turned out that it was a book, yes about pugs, but each page spread had a different nursery rhyme with the words changed to pertain to the pug. It wasn't what I expected but it was still absolutely adorable! I would recommend it for any dog lover!

      Book Description

      A Wilson the Pug love story . . . with a twist

Wilson the Pug, everyone's favorite canine Taoist, has fallen in love. His soul mate, Hedy, with her wrinkly skin and floppy ears, is a real looker. But what the lovable dog Wilson thinks is a fellow pug is actually a mastiff puppy, and in no time at all the differences between the two dogs become comically obvious. After trying with little success to appear more like a big dog (by lifting weights, practicing his bark, and trying to smooth out his signature pug wrinkles), Wilson is heartbroken. But once again, the wisdom of the Tao sets him straight: “The Master acts on what he feels and not what he sees.” Wilson and Hedy couldn't look more different, but as we all know, it's what's inside that really counts.

The Ugly Pugling is the fourth enchanting book from the stars of The Tao of Pug. It is sure to be another must-have for dog lovers across the country, full of the playful and funny photographs that have won Wilson the Pug so many fans over the years.

        Book Description

FOR THE LOVE OF PUGS is a rogues' gallery of Pugs captured in the act of going about their usual business of being incorrigibly, devastatingly charming. Each of the eighty-six full-page color portraits by eleven of the country's best pet photographers stimulates anew our curiosity about the identity and origin of the breed. To these intriguing questions, author Robert Hutchinson marshals the most thoughtful, deeply researched, and daring answers ever to appear in the Pug literature. This book offers you the key to a whole new dimension of Pug appreciation.

The first chapter, "Little Big Dog," reviews the stellar cast of Pug owners (from Queen Victoria to Andy Warhol) and the Pug's own stellar roles (from Toby the Dog in Punch-and-Judy shows to Frank the Intergalactic Pug in Men in Black). "Mug Shot" measures the Pug's peculiar head against the skull shapes of natural canids and argues that such extreme flatness of face could only have evolved by artificial selection. A case is made for the priority of flat-faced Asiatic breeds and for the Pug as the agent of the global dissemination of this cranial feature in the dog world. "Even Dwarves Start Small" plugs the Pug into the crazy gerrymanders of canine dwarfing mutations. With scientific sizzle, Hutchinson demonstrates that the conformation of the Pug depends on the simultaneous operation of three dwarfing mutations; compares dwarfing in Pugs and other dwarf breeds; and contrasts the genetics of dwarfing in dogs and human beings.

"China Doll" traces the intimate connection between the Manchu Dynasty (1644-1917) and the privileged presence of flat-faced lap dogs in the Imperial City. The latter are shown to have been conferred by successive Dalai Lamas on the Manchu emperors as incarnations of a Tibetan spirit lion-dog who was central to the divine pretensions of the imperial cult. Suggestive analogies are remarked between the somatypes of these dogs and those of the Manchu bannermen and courtiers.

"Orange Herring" crushingly debunks the received wisdom that the Pug is the Dog Who Saved Protestantism in Holland in 1572. Hutchinson proves that no records of Pugs can be dredged from Dutch or English art and literature prior to the eighteenth century. "French Connection" reveals that the earliest extant record of the Pug in Europe comes from the court of the King of France in 1713. The probable Pug pipeline to Europe is identified as the influential Jesuit missionary-mandarins who shuttled between the courts of Louis XIV and K'ang-hsi, the second Manchu emperor. The Pug was soon adopted as a secret emblem of religious tolerance by eighteenth-century freethinkers.

The final chapter, "One Swallow," examines the strange case of Pisanello's Pug-like dog, drawn in Venice around 1415.

        3 out of 5 stars Look, but don't read.......2002-07-30

The photos in this book are fantastic, but the writing is truly HORRIFIC. It's clear the author has never met a 12-letter word (where a five-letter word would have done perfectly) that he didn't like. OUCH!

2 out of 5 stars Topic of entire book is history of the pug- cute pics though.......2002-02-01

Ok, the photos are adorable. This is a wonderful coffee table book, but if you're looking for a guide to owning pugs, do not buy this book. Basically, the book is an in-depth study of the origin of the pug. It reads like a college term paper, which is not necessarily a bad thing, if that's what you're looking for. The introduction sounds like the author chose every other word from a thesaurus--wordy to the point of annoyance! The photos have nothing to do with the text. I bought this book thinking it was more of an owner's guide to pugs, which is why I'm disappointed. If you are studying the history of the pug, this might be a helpful reference tool.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-07-29

I love this book ... It has really answered some questions. Great pictures..I recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars A Brief Critque of "For the Love of Pugs".......2000-05-16

I am a pug fanatic so I naturally bought this book. I was, however, very disappointed in it. The pictures are gorgeous but have absolutely nothing to do with the text. The text is excellent in some portions of the book but is also very detailed and at times difficult to follow. Had the text been illustrated by relevant pictures, drawings, maps etc, the text would have been much more interesting and easy to understand. This book reads as if it were the author's Masters thesis that he decided to have made into a book without putting any extra work into it. With a bit more effort this could have been a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Pictures and Adorable Mugs!.......2000-05-10

Pugs, pugs everywhere! There are so many wonderful images in this book; it's a pity not to see them. Lots of full-page pictures. The writing is very interesting as well. I never knew there was such a varied breed history to this wonderful dog. The author traces the breed in history through what seems like every country. A very thorough book.

        Book Description

A clenched fist…a Mamoset monkey…a grumbling expression all describe the Pug's famous face. Regardless of how you translate his name, the Pug is one of China's most famous companion dogs, renowned today for his charm, compact size and happy, lively disposition. "Multum in parvo," the Pug's age-old maxim, perfectly describes this larger than life compact dog: "a lot in a small package." The Pug offers new owners unwavering devotion, child-like fun and super-canine intelligence, a welcome addition to any dog-loving home.

This book provides the much-needed factual information about Pugs and their history, characteristics and standard, as well as puppy selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and behavior of the breed. The new owner will welcome the author's experience and advice about puppy-proofing the home, housebreaking and preventing puppy problems. In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive.

5 out of 5 stars New dog owners take a look.......2005-08-17

I do not yet own a Pug, and I felt like this was a great book to get to know how to handle a new puppy. I liked that they have pictures ranging from what fleas look like to common eye diseases.
I wouldn't recommend it to people who have short attention spans, it isn't necessarily really "fun" to read, but it is informative and easy to understand. I have read some Pug dog books that are very biased, and this one is more neutral, which I appreciated because you should make your own decisions based on information you recieve about how to raise your dog. I went through it and highlighted parts that I felt would be good to come back to if needed (how dorky am I), since this book is somewhat laid out as a textbook would be.
If you are serious about adopting a Pug, this is a great book to start out your journey!

I volunteer with first graders and feel this book is very suitable for children 5 through 12. The theme which demonstrates the encouraging of a child to overcome the natural fear of another living creature with the guidance of grownups is of great value. The story, while having an important theme, is well written and is delightfully illustrated. It's great eye appeal is one of the first things children respond to. Ruth OConnor

              Book Description

A collection of thirteen original essays by leaders in the emerging field of ecocriticism, The Greening of Literary Scholarship is devoted to exploring new and previously neglected literatures, theories, and methods in environmental-literary scholarship.

Each essay in this impressive collection challenges the notion that the study of environmental literature is separate from traditional concerns of criticism, and each applies ecocritical scholarship to literature not commonly explored in this context. New historicism, postcolonialism, deconstructionism, and feminist and Marxist theories are all utilized to evaluate and gain new insights into environmental literature; at the same time, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Upton Sinclair, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Susan Howe are studied from an ecocritical perspective.

At its core, The Greening of Literary Scholarship offers a practical demonstration of how articulating traditional and environmental modes of literary scholarship can enrich the interpretation of literary texts and, most important, revitalize the larger fields of environmental and literary scholarship.

This book, together with only a few others, provides a powerful introduction to the growing field of ecocriticism. The chapters are varied in target study content but share a common rigor in analysis and a common clarity of prose. I have refered my students to this work and indeed found it to be very useful as a background reader when I penned my own recent book of ecocriticsm concerning contemporary nature writing about water - Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water (nominated for top environmetal book of the year). Given its probable widespread usefulness to environmental scholars, The Greening of Literary Schloarship should be part of every 'green' academic's library.

                Book Description

This book rejects apocalyptic pronouncements that the end of the millennium represents the 'end' of nature as well. Remaking Reality brings together contributors from across the human sciences who argue that a notion of "social nature" provides great hope for the future. Applying a variety of theoretical approaches to social nature, and engaging with debates in politics, science, technology and social movements surrounding race, gender and class, the contributors explore important and emerging sites where nature is now being remade with considerable social and ecological consequences.

                  Book Description

This book explores the philosophical and political challenge of ecofeminism. It shows how the ecology movement has been held back by conceptual confusion over the implications of gender difference, while much that passes in the name of feminism is actually an obstacle to ecological change and global democracy. The author argues that ecofeminism reaches beyond contemporary social movements being a political synthesis of four revolutions in one: ecology is feminism is socialism is post-colonial struggle.

Informed by a critical postmodern reading of the Marxist tradition, Salleh's ecofeminism integrates discourses on science, the body, culture, nature, political economy. The book opens with a short history of the ecofeminism. Part two establishes the basis for its epistemological challenge while the third part consists of ecofeminist deconstructions of deep ecology, social ecology, eco-socialism and postmodern feminism. In the final section, Salleh suggests that a powerful way forward can be found in commonalities between ecofeminist and indigenous struggles.

This comprehensive survey and assessment of sociological theories of the relations between societies and their natural biophysical environment touches on and addresses virtually all of the major perspectives, focal points, and debates in environmental sociology today. At the same time, the book aims to go beyond an inventory of environmental sociological theory by stressing how new ground can be broken in the articulation of environmental sociology with major classical and contemporary sociological theories. 5 out of 5 stars Great Source and Teaching Tool!.......2004-02-07

I was very pleased when this edited volume became available. I teach environmental sociology at a major University that offers very few social science courses concerning the environment. Thus, students are not too well versed in these areas. However, my students are rather engaged by the various chapters in this volume--both the classical and contemporary approaches. This book is a very effective set of readings to use as a supplement for a textbook, or a great source for social theory courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Many of the chapters are so well written that I cite them in my research! I highly recommend this volume for faculty teaching environmental sociology and/or social theory, and also for those that are in need of a relatively quick yet thorough updating of the current state of theoretical approaches to the relationship between humans and the environment.

                  Book Description

In Human Well-Being and the Natural Environment, Partha Dasgupta explores ways to measure the quality of life. In developing quality-of-life indices, he pays particular attention to the natural environment, illustrating how it can be incorporated, more generally, into economic reasoning in a seamless manner. Professor Dasgupta puts the theory that he develops to use in extended commentaries on the economics of population, poverty traps, global warming, structural adjustment programmes, and free trade, particularly in relation to poor countries. The result is a treatise that goes beyond quality-of-life measures and offers a comprehensive account of the newly emergent subject of ecological economics. With the publication of this new paperback edition, Professor Dasgupta has taken the opportunity to update and revise his text in a number of ways, including developments to facilitate its current use on a number of gradate courses in environmental and resource economics. The treatment of the welfare economics of imperfect economies has been developed using new findings, and the Appendix has been expanded to include applications of the theory to a number of institutions, and to develop approximate formulae for estimating the value of environmental natural resources.

This book is easy to understand. The language is very simple. This book contains the work of Partha Dasgupta and -mainly- Karl Goran Maler during years about several issues, as "genuine investment", "why the NNP is not a good measure to evaluate sustainability?", etc. It is a very good book to understand these issues (and others).

                    Book Description

Acid Rain Science and Politics in Japan is a pioneering work in environmental and Asian history as well as an in-depth analysis of the influence of science on domestic and international environmental politics. Kenneth Wilkening's study also illuminates the global struggle to create sustainable societies.

The Meiji Restoration of 1868 ended Japan's era of isolation- created self-sufficiency and sustainability. The opening of the country to Western ideas and technology not only brought pollution problems associated with industrialization (including acid rain) but also scientific techniques for understanding and combating them. Wilkening identifies three pollution-related "sustainability crises" in modern Japanese history: copper mining in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which spurred Japan's first acid rain research and policy initiatives; horrendous post- World War II domestic industrial pollution, which resulted in a "hidden" acid rain problem; and the present-day global problem of transboundary pollution, in which Japan is a victim of imported acid rain. He traces the country's scientific and policy responses to these crises through six distinct periods related to acid rain problems and argues that Japan's leadership role in East Asian acid rain science and policy today can explained in large part by the "historical scientific momentum" generated by efforts to confront the issue since 1868, reinforced by Japan's cultural affinity with rain (its "culture of rain"). Wilkening provides an overview of nature, culture, and the acid rain problem in Japan to complement the general set of concepts he develops to analyze the interface of science and politics in environmental policymaking. He concludes with a discussion of lessons from Japan's experience that can be applied to the creation of sustainable societies worldwide.

                      Book Description

Changing the Boundaries explores gender relations with respect to education, reproductive health services, and agricultural resources - three factors that are widely recognized as being central to the struggle for gender equity, population control, and environmental sustainability. As well as defining the role of women in the population-environment quandary, Jiggins explains how that role is the key to understanding issues of population and environment.

Throughout the volume, the author makes extensive use of research, experience, and documentation that draws on the views and publications of women in the global South, much of which is available to development practitioners but is rarely found in academic libraries. Data, arguments, concepts, and analysis from a wide and varied range of sources are woven together to link the experience of women's daily lives with population policies and global environmental politics.

To understand, contrast, and compare alternative understandings of economic, environmental and development issues, we need to be aware why theorists conceptualize the process of social experience so differently. By addressing the disagreements between theorists, this book provides a unique basis to contrast and compare the plethora of theories of, and policies for, economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social progress.

Cole offers an informed criticism of modern economic and developmental theory. His evaluation of supply versus demand economics should ring true with most informed readers. In addition, the "abstract labor theory of value" is presented in a concise and clear manner. Unfortunately the work is overshadowed by Cole's intense desire to interpret crises and development in a Marxist fashion. His evaluation of the East Asian financial crises leaves much to be desired. In contrast, his writing pertaining to Cuba are beyond reproach, in this work as in past works. This work is best enjoyed by those with an open mind or by those without a religious following to more mainstream economic theory.

                        Book Description

This theoretical and empirical study examines the influence of global institutions on the generation of scientific knowledge. Virginia Walsh's approach reverses the traditional focus of international relations literature--which most often deals with how scientific knowledge influences institutions--and offers an original way to look at international environmental governance. After proposing a theory of institutional mechanisms by which global institutions shape the generation of knowledge, the book turns to detailed case studies of two institutions in the under- studied but vital area of marine science, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, to illustrate these mechanisms.

In part 1, "Theory," the book identifies three specific mechanisms or "fixes" that provide the means by which institutions shape the generation and use of knowledge. With the positional fix, key individuals use their social roles or positions in an institution to influence the beliefs of members or fix the direction of research. The statutory fix occurs when beliefs gain acceptance as a consequence of being embedded in rules or treaties. The committee fix is illustrated in the regularized practices through which social groups accept statements as group beliefs. Part 2, "Evidence," shows these mechanisms at work in the two case studies. The Scripps Institution, for example, illustrates the positional fix, as successive directors used their position to frame research. The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, on the other hand, exemplifies both the statutory fix and the committee fix in its regulatory actions.

This book shows that polemical environmental and ecological debates are governed not so much by access to facts as they are by the political ideology of the expert advancing a particular argument. Moreover, the thoughts of these experts tend to be based largely in just one of three competing streams of political thought: the left, the center, or the right. Drawing on social theory, the author explains the philosophical origins of this tendency to rely on just one of three traditions, and why this poses a serious obstacle to conceptualizing the cause, nature, and resolution of environmental problems.
