5 out of 5 stars Great Work.......2007-09-26

This is a terrific look at this artist's use of line especially. If you're interested in his color work, pick up one of the more expensive books offered on this man, but if you're wanting a cheap, quick, intro to this man's work and especially his use of gesture, this is an awesome book.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully reproduced plates at a bargain price.......2000-07-27

This was a good book both in terms of quality and the price. Many art books become prohibitively expensive when the focus is on one particular artist. The book includes a well written bio on Daumier and descriptions of the plates for those who cannot read French. Still, one weakness that I found was the failure to include some of the most famous pieces. It was almost as if they had simply been forgotten to be inserted- they are even referenced in the biography!

To conclude, if you want one book that has all that Daumier had to offer this one isn't for you. However, if you would like to own some of it in a nicely presented package without spending more than $15 with shipping (that's amazing) then buy this book!

            Product Description

Ranked alongside Ingres by Baudelaire as the finest draughtsman in Paris and matched as a political caricaturist in the nineteenth century only by Goya, Honor aumier worked for opposition newspapers throughout the Second Empire, one of the most corrupt and flamboyant periods in French history. He won fame, notoriety, and so a prison sentence, for his prodigious output of caricatures of prominent politicians and his relentless lampooning of the hypocrisy and pretentions of contemporary Parisian moeurs. Sarah Symmons both examines Daumier's role as a professional newspaper artist and explores his more personal body of work, which remained largely unknown during his lifetime. Investigating his series of watercolours and oils of the ordinary citizens of Paris, of the railway travellers, mounte-banks and washerwomen who also people his caricatures, she finds a tragic monumentality far removed from the journalistic cynicism of much of his newspaper work. This quality they share with his more ambitious studies of the dispossessed, of fugitives and emigrants, and of the heroically absurd wanderings of Don Quixote. Often choosing to paint the simple everyday life he saw around him, Daumier was a model example of le peintre de la vie moderne, while his use of pictorial understatement and his painstaking search for absolute simplicity gave many of his pictures an experimental, 'unfinished' quality, which discouraged official recognition, but led to such artists as Picasso, Steinlen and Paul Klee to study his work closely during their formative years. Sarah Symmons has produced a comprehensive analysis of Daumier's career as a painter, sculptor and caricaturist, documenting his striving for the stark and truthful simplicity which gives his finest work an air of universality and permanence, while reflecting the anxieties and insecurity of his own life and times.

Georg Buchner died in 1837 at a tragically early age, and his three works for the stage remained virtually unknown for half a century. Today all three, especially Danton's Death, his great play about the French Revolution are performed regularly.

Sacrificed to powers larger than himself, Woyzeck is one of drama's first anti-heroes. He serves a German captain and makes money by allowing a doctor to experiment on him, but his deeper morality leads him to a tragic end.

                    1 out of 5 stars A Horrible Translation of a Great Play.......2006-09-21

This is not Woyzeck by Georg Buchner. This is Nicholas Rudall's meandering version. It is simple a horrible translation of a great play. Rundall seems not to understand the root of what Buchner was trying to get at with his translation. The true essence of Woyzeck is sadly missing in this banal watered down version, and this version make little sense. Unfortunately, everyone wants to tackle this play, but few do it well, partly because Buchner had not finished a final draft of the play before his death. It was found as scenes, and therefore, people feel they have the right to rearrange the play as they feel fit. Done right, the play is very powerful. However, Rundall has muddled this translations, rendering it totally meaningless.

2 out of 5 stars Blame the translator, not the author.......2004-06-27

Having been involved in a production of a play, I was very surprised to read this edition, surprised because it seemed to lose so much of the play's poetry and excitement. By altering the text to create a rather traditional form of theater, Mr. Rudall undermines the power of the text fragments and fails to adequately provide future performers and readers with the materials to create a production. I would advise anyone interested in the play, which is at turns tragic, hysterical, and terrifying, to seek another translation.

3 out of 5 stars It's an IB life for us.......2002-05-02

Well, this play sure was unique, I'll give it that. I had to read it for the Theatre Arts International Baccalaureate Exam (2001). It was one of three choices (the other two were by Dario Fo and Lorraine Hansberry which explains their listing on the "people who bought this also bought" list) and it seemed the most interesting. Basically, Woyzeck is a soldier in 1830s Germany. He has a girlfriend whom he discovers is cheating on him with a higher-ranking official. All the while, he is humiliated by his superiors and the townspeople. One day, he buys a knife and murders his girlfriend. The author, Georg Buechner, died while writing the play, so it ends, rather ambiguously, with Woyzeck wading into a pond into which he will throw the murder weapon. This was an interesting play to analyze for IB inasmuch as it provided a good deal of material for me to work with and I had good ideas about how the play ought to be produced. Still, the plot was very strange.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fast-Paced and Gripping.......2000-03-30

(I always wanted to say that.)

Woyzeck is a designer's nightmare but an actor's dream: a tragedy of immediate imagery, almost written for the MTV generation. Scenes that last at most two pages flicker around archetypes like the overbearing Major and the menacing Doctor, while the play's more human characters find themselves caught in between. There are searingly tragic moments (as befits the genre). There are also darkly funny ones: Woyzeck's conspiracy theories, Andres's childish songs, the Scholar's politically incorrect comments.

Buchner left the world young, and if this play is any indication, that's a tragedy too. As a reader, an actor or a (shudder) designer, you'll enjoy being swept along by his work.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The "object" Woyzeck.......2001-09-29

While evolving around the potential for psychopathic violence and paranoia, Büchner's psycho-medical text not only guarantees human anxiety and hopelessness, but the phenomenological abolition of ontological hierachies. The fragmental composition mirrors a world of poverty, submission and alienation, where the "object" Woyzeck faces a materialistic fatality.
