An experimental magazine project by the creative minds behind documenta 12, the world's most important contemporary art event (June 16 to September 23, 2007)
The documenta 12 magazines are a collective worldwide editorial project linking over eighty print and on-line periodicals, as well as other media. In advance of the exhibition in Kassel, documenta 12 magazines have opened up a central site for reflection and visual contemplation. Since early 2006, influential journals in the realm of art, as well as specialist publications operating in discursive fields beyond the major art centres, have been publishing and discussing contributions - essays, interviews, photo reportages, features, interventions from artists and articles of fiction - in relation to documenta 12's three main themes: Is modernity our antiquity? What is bare life? What is to be done?
The documenta 12 magazine will subsequently assemble and summarize these debates and provide a selection of core texts and images.
Good texts help us to understand more about what we see: in this sense, the documenta 12 magazine aims to provide background knowledge prior to the exhibition, without restricting in any way the individual experience of viewing the artworks themselves. The broadly conceived themes of Modernity?, Life! and Education: are in fact intended to increase our appetite for images, because the significance of art lies within art itself - in its ambiguity, contrariness and stubborn independence.

Frankly, I was expecting much better articles. Good interview with Rancière, but the understanding of Agamben's concept of bare life is quite superficial.

Nice look back at 50's ads.......2007-01-12
This is a Japanese book (seemingly for a Japanese audience) on American fashion ads from the 50's era . The ads are reproduced as close to full size as possible and are shown in original colors and are lovely. There is no commentary on the ads to tell you why these ads are interesting, significant, or representative, but the ads themselves are fun to read and look at. Would have given 5 stars had there been discussion. Great library find, but not so much a buy unless you just want the ads.

The girl is a DON'T even though she had nothing to do with dressing herself and luckily, will never be the wiser. Next, we have a potato chip logo that features Humpty Dumpty leaning on a counter. The caption says, "Dude is just chilling. He's unflappable. You could be like, `Humpty, what if nobody shows up to our party?' and he'd be all, `Don't worry about it doood.'" This DO became so popular with the Vice readership one even had Humpty tattooed on his arm next to the word "Unflappable." Vice Magazine's DOs & DON'Ts started out as a way to appease clothing advertisers that were discouraged by Vice's lack of fashion content. The feature snowballed completely out of control and has now come to define Vice more than anything else. The New York Times calls it "genius," the Onion says, "spot-on," and Maxim insists it's "impossible to put down." There is a rabid fan base of readers who hold DON'T parties and dress as various favorites (the purple track pants "bitch" being the most popular by far). The first volume, DOs & DON'Ts: 10 Years of Vice Magazine's Street Fashion Critiques, has already sold over 50,000 copies and a broadband version of the show called DOs & DON'Ts & FRIENDs boasts such guest stars as Johnny Knoxville, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, David Cross, and even Rip Taylor, all of whom will be contributing their own DOs & DON'Ts to the book. How such ridiculous fashion commentary grew to be so popular is a complete mystery to everyone involved but, at almost twice the size, this second book of all-new entries is likely to quench America's DOs & DON'Ts thirst for at least a week.

Dogspell is a playful and entertaining reminder of God's love -- even in the darkest times. Whether away from home, caught in the rain/mud, regardless of appearances; God, like a dog, loves unconditionally. The metaphor of God as dog emphasizes the joy of a loving relationship with God. Mary Ellen Ashcroft creates parallels between the greeting of a dog and God's welcome, a dog's love of all people and God's love, and a dog's need for attention and God's call. Each reader will find a unique personal message and inspiration in this book.

Cute, Wise and Annoying At Times.......2007-03-20
It's a pretty good and worthwhile read. It's Christian romance by the way. What I really like about it is that the writer's portrayal of Romy's struggle with her new lot in life was unexpectedly realistic and I was very impressed by that. The writer shows a lot of much needed wisdom which I drank in thirstily. I also love the historical time the story is set in.
The story fits the usual romance novel formats so expect the usual.
What I didnt like however was the story of the Native American woman; Annie. I thought the telling of her story was quite patronizing, bordering on racist and I wasn't surprised she died. You know, kill off the minority.
Also,this book is more evangelical in tone than universally Christian.
On the whole, Romy's Walk dares to stretch the Christian romance zone and I can see a bright future in this genre. Recommended.
Romy's Walk - A Walk in Faith.......2001-05-18
Romy's Walk is the second in Ms. Stoks Abounding Love Series and centers on the story of Romy, the second of the three friends introduced in Olivia's Touch. While the reading of Romy's Walk doesn't require the reader to have read the first book in the series, Romy's Walk continues the correspondence between Olivia and Romy who have been friends from childhood. Romy's Walk is a story of faith. It tells of a young woman who has put her faith in God all of her life, and ends up having that faith tested so severly that she thinks God has foresaken her. Once again, Ms. Stoks writes in such way that regardless of the time or the setting in her books, the story is something we can apply to our lives today. We all have our faith tested in some way or another but how we use what happens to us to strengthen our faith and belief instead of looking at the negative is how we can continue our walk with God. Romy's Walk continues with the flare of romance as Romy's life long dream becomes a reality in light of the tests put before her. I will be waiting for the third and final book of this series Elena's Song.

A Christian book that won't bore you.......2003-03-01
I'm 15 years old, and I read the book Elena's Song for a book report. Once I had started reading, I couldn't put it down. I believe you will feel the same way.
Elena Breen is a woman with a beautiful, remarkable voice. She ran away from home as a young girl from her abusive father and brothers to a man who was even more abusive. This man was her manager, who promised to launch her into America's biggest sensation. Elena fell for his charms and let him control her, even when she met a playwriter and singer Christian named Jesse Golden, who she fell in love with. When she became pregnant with Jesse's baby, the two married, but there was still a part of Elena Jesse never had a part of.
The stress of her manager began to ruin Elena's voice and her marriage, so finally she left Jesse and her son for her singing career which was taking off.
Four years later, Elena has shot her voice and escaped from her manager's hold, and lays dying in a convent when Jesse discovers her. He vows to reunite their marriage and restore her health and voice. More importantly, establish a faith between her and God that she never had.
Peggy Stok's does an excellent job telling this moving tale. There are many surprises and twists entangled in the story. What was the hold the manager had over Elena? Will Jesse and Elena restore their marriage? I guess you'll have to read and find out.

Touched by Olivia's Touch.......2001-04-17
A very enjoyable book that mixes a heart warming story, seasoned with a variety of emotions, along with a strong moral, christian back drop. I loved the character of Olivia and look forward to getting to know both Romy and Elena in Peggy's next two books.
Definately an add to your list of "reads"!
1880's "modern medicine" meets - Olivia!.......2000-07-05
There is an old saying about saying nice things in case you have to eat your words....and Dr. Ethan Gray learns that lesson when an injury requires him to use the services of Olivia Plummer. Olivia had been the town's "healer" until the uppity bonna fide Dr. Gray had come to town.
Pushed together by circumstances (and by order of the town Sheriff!) the two find a way to work together, and eventually to respect each others abilities. As time passes, Ethan regrets his earlier actions, but Olivia is determined to make her point. Both learn the hard way that choosing God's will over our own is a much better path.
A quick, easy read, and one that will warm your heart. I look forward to the next in the Abounding Love series. (why can't I ever discover a series AFTER they are all written! )
