Book Description

My poetry is mainly philosophical with awesome metaphors comparing city life with nature, some deeply psychological, others bordering on spiritual.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deep Spiritual Dimensions.......2007-08-01

Victor Dyck's book of poems provides a unique window into the spiritual reality of urban 21st century America.

5 out of 5 stars Perceptions.......2007-06-19

The poet perceives reality on a dimension I am not even aware of. It was a very enjoyable book to read. There are beautiful references to city life, nature & relationships.

4 out of 5 stars Insight and heart.......2007-05-13

The city is a place very much alive in these poems, utterly concrete and yet ephemeral, and full of an intense and strange joy. A voice that echoes Ginsburg, only somehow with more innocence. The poet rewards the reader with startling and often beautiful images and phrases.

I found this at my local library and remain thoroughly impressed by this slim volume. I have been a fervent believer that until we gain a better understanding of the expansiveness and the limitations of our language to express spritual concepts, our knowledge of our own spiritual natures will remain only on the most basic level. In a few essays and a rather comprehensive glossary of both Arabic and English words defined in a spiritual context, this book does more to further our understanding of language in a 100+ pages than most heftier volumes I have read lately. Highly recommended for any collection of Islamic texts.

Critics have had this to say about Bond: Plays 2:

Lear: "Bond's greatest (and biggest) play ... it is even more topical now and will become more so as man's inhumanity gains subtle sophistication with the twenty-first century's approach."- The Times

The Sea: "It blends wild farce with tragedy and ends with a sliver of hope ... what makes the play fascinating is Bond's bleak poetry and social comedy."- Guardian

Narrow Road to the Deep North: "His best piece so far ... No one else could have written it."- The Times

Black Mass, written for performance at an anti-apartheid demonstration: "A George Grosz picture come to life ... the only kind of artistic imagery through which to speak of such evil."- Listener

Passion: "Mingles comedy and high anger with absolute sureness."- Guardian

      Book Description

Over centuries, Andalusian Gypsies developed cante jondo, or deep song, which grew from the experience of exile and marginalization. Although flamenco music enjoys wide popularity today, the words of the songs are often lost in the passion of the performance, or because they are sung in dialect. This is a bilingual sampling of the lyrics and brief commentaries by aficionados.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Distilled life experience.......2003-12-08

This slim volume contains well-chosen and poetic quotations about flamenco as well as the poetry itself with translation. Most of the lyrics are 4 lines, relatively short lines so that the poetry must be clear and precise - nothing extraneous or wasted. An example:
      When daylight comes
      my griefs begin to grow;
only the shadows of darkest night
      comfort my soul.
If haiku is the poetry of observation, observation of what is true (in a Buddhist sense), these poems are the poetry of passion - pleasurable and/or horrible. This is not a book simply for flamenco-philes; rather it is a book for all interested in passionate humanity.

5 out of 5 stars "There's a halo round the moon, My love has died.".......1999-12-08

This is the real stuff--a jewel of a book. After I read these lyrics, "I taste blood in my mouth." Will Kirkland has not only captured the words and rhythm of "cante," he has touched my heart.

Dusty is on a sea-fari. She's joined the scientists of the Jason Project as they explore a hydrothermal vent at the bottom of the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of Mexico's Baja Peninsula. In the mini-sub Turtle, the scientists explain what she's seeing, and Dusty records it all in her sketchbook so other kids can share the experience. Through Dusty's lively first-person accounts, photographs, diagrams, maps, and full- color artwork, Sea-Fari Deep turns a real-life scientific expedition into an exciting reading adventure. "Sea-Fari Deep is a beautiful, imaginative rendition of a real science expedition. . . . The thrill of discovery and living out one's dreams is wonderfully captured. . . . "-- Dr. Bob Ballard, founder of the Jason Project and discoverer of the Titanic

A new and refreshing type book from National Geographic ... about a mini-submarine journey to the recently discovered life around thermal vents. It's a busy book ... profusely illustrated in a creative style that uses photography, pastels and watercolors. My two children, who have some leaning toward science, love this story ... you can sense the enthusiasm of the author. The dive sequence is particularly priceless ... nice blend of images and story. I and my children give this book 5 stars ... and hope there are more of this type coming from National Geographic. And ... we all love Max ... the ugligator!

5 out of 5 stars a creative, and imaginative view of an unknown world, joyful.......1999-03-17

This book is a treat to behold. The vividness of the imagery is breathtaking. The author is certainly state of the art and brilliant as she weaves together all of the newest in media. This book must have taken her a terribly long time to create. She does such an excellent job of explaining technically difficult material to all, including youth. Her scrapbook-diary format gives the reader the feeling that they have accompanied her. It is whimsical, serious, artistic and soundly scientific all in one. BRAVO

        NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR.

The reflections contained between the covers of this book are not necessarily intended to entertain but to evoke thought. They are ideas captured by words as simply and concisely as I can present them, and I fully acknowledge mere words often provide only the crudest of outlines. This is not a bad thing, however, because then it is left to the reader to fill in the spaces with creations from his or her own imagination and life experience. The result can be something even better than effortless entertainment. It can lead to such oddities as THINKING, INTROSPECTION, and REFLECTIVE REASONING.

It is my hope that my thoughts might inspire you, the reader, to put into words some reflections of your own, since there has never been a more appropriate or pressing time for all voices to be heard.

        Book Description

The magic of Andalusia is crystallized in Federico Garcia Lorca's first major work, Poem of the Deep Song, written in 1921 when the poet was twenty-three years old, and published a decade later. In this group of poems, based on saetas, soleares, and siguiriyas, Lorca captures the passionate flamenco cosmos of Andalusia's Gypsies, ""those mysterious wandering folk who gave deep song its definitive form.

Cante jondo, deep song, comes from a musical tradition that developed among peoples who fled into the mountains in the 15th century to escape the Spanish Inquisition. With roots in Arabic instruments, Sephardic ritual, Byzantine liturgy, native folk songs, and, above all, the rhythms of Gypsy life, deep song is characterized by intense and profound emotion.

Fearing that the priceless heritage of deep song might vanish from Spain, Lorca, along with Manuel de Falla and other young artists, hoped to preserve ""the artistic treasure of an entire race."" In Poem of the Deep Song, the poet's own lyric genius gives cante jondo a special kind of immortality.

Carlos Baur is the translator of Garcia Lorca's The Public and Play Without a Title: Two Posthumous Plays, and of Cries from a Wounded Madrid: Poetry of the Spanish Civil War. He has also translated the work of Henry Miller and other contemporary American writers into Spanish.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What? No one has reviewed this delightful book?.......1998-10-09

Lorca has written both an essay on Deep Song and a book of Deep Song poetry - they should be read together.

While Lorca, Falla and others' theory of the origin of Deep Song in the gypsy tradition is now discounted, the sensitivity Lorca shows in trying to retain a traditional form is wonderful. [Current theory gives more influence to the original Andalusian, Saracen, and Shephardic influences which had already developed into Deep Song when the gypsies arrived].

In fact, one should also read some Arab-Andulsian poetry along with Deep Song. The poems of Deep Song are not Lorca's best but they are important for understanding Lorca's cultural sensibilities. The use of refrains, the use of a varient of the opening stanza as a closing stanza etc. are techniques that are clearly in the hands of a master although the poems were written early in his career.

Now, if I could only find out the meaning of certain repeating images such as yellow serpent.

        Book Description

This book was designed with simple people in mind. The fact is that even though we are all different we go through some of the same things and there is no set way to feel most of the time. We don't know how to feel, but we make it through anyway, as we have for so many years. Individually we are strong people and if we can ever find a way to stand together then we could be powerful people. I'm just trying to do my part and help unite my Father's family so we can be ready when he gets here. If you get nothing else out of this book, get this-and it is on the back, so it doesn't even cost-the most important thing is to love each other.

Author, Anthony Bailey, gives vivid descriptions of what his thoughts and life are like; from growing up, to loving his best friend. The best part about this is, anyone of us could have written these lyrics. AB captures what so many of us have lived and has decided to "put it down" for others to share in our experiences. The essence of "Generation X" is displayed in this book, and I encourage ALL black people to own a copy, then share with your non-black friends and associates. Go 'head, AB!

The poetry in this book is of things I have thought of at times, and/or expressed feelings in one way or the other. The poetry here is sometimes an expression of my ideas and thoughts. The poetry that depicts places and things were triggered by old photos and sometimes a conversation with a friend. And some of the others were just off the top of my head. Poetry is a very relaxing form of writing for me, and the poems in this book were written in that mode. Some of the places mentioned in the poems in this book were dear to me, and some of the things as well. But some were strictly fictional. The poems in this book are somewhat a part of me, one might say.

Maria Shriver's warmth, humor, and wisdom are evident on every page of this little book. Inspired by her commencement speech at the College of the Holy Cross, the book contains stories and insights that will be helpful, entertaining, and encouraging to graduates at every stage of life. The lessons themselves--"be willing to fail," "stand your ethical ground," "marriage is a hell of a lot of hard work"--are nothing new. What makes them interesting are the life stories that accompany them and Shriver's personable, friendly style. Reading this book feels like having a cup of coffee with a wise and funny friend. Tales of her first television experiences are surprising and hilarious, and she takes balancing motherhood and career to new levels--imagine postponing an interview with Fidel Castro to get your daughter to her first day of kindergarten! Each chapter is easy to read and ends with a focused lesson--kind of a bullet point from her original speech--that encourages readers to be ultimately true to themselves and their dreams, while cutting through harmful illusions. The last chapter, on laughter, is one to read again and again. Shriver maintains that without laughter not much else matters, and in life's toughest times it's laughter that gets us through. For anyone starting a new adventure--graduation, marriage, parenthood, career shift, or a milestone birthday--Ten Things I Wish I'd Known brings wisdom, laughter, practical suggestions, and a down-to-earth manner together into one fabulous gift. --Jill Lightner

          · Starting at the bottom--over and over again· Dealing with--and learning from--the Boss from Hell· Giving up the Wedding Delusion, not to mention that one-way ticket to Happily Ever After· Being asked to bend your principles--by your superiors· Wanting to be a high-powered success and super parent· Knowing that children will both exhaust and sustain you· Facing that terrifying question: "What have I been put on this earth to do?" You could call them notes from life's trenches. Maria Shriver's Ten Things I Wish I'd Known--Before I Went out into the Real World gives us her reflections, confessions, advice, memories, and, most of all, hard-earned lessons . . . all the things we wish we knew before we started out, and that few people ever honestly discuss. Here is the truth about: the price we pay for giving in to our fears, as well as the relief we feel when we finally face them; the humiliation of swallowing our ego so that we can learn from an abusive experience; the rewards of taking risks and the pain of failure; the joy of finding someone we can love and the limitations of every relationship; how it's never too late to tap the wisdom of others, even (especially!) our own parents; and the importance of taking what we do seriously without taking ourselves seriously.

          5 out of 5 stars Insightful .......2007-07-02

This book would make a wonderful graduation gift. I wish I would've read it back when I was eighteen-years-old. Although I purchased this book over three years ago, I still come back to it from time to time. She offers so much insight and wisdom, but she also humanizes herself as a woman and teaches her readers that even she has experienced self-doubt and has strived to reach 'perfection' (something she teaches you not to do). She writes about how important it is to start at the bottom because it's where you learn the most and gain character. I especially liked reading about her husband and children. She and her family are so much more normal than anyone would ever think.

I am 56 and had I had this book to read in 1968 when I graduated high school I might have had the tools to do things a little better through my 20's and 30's. She gives you a rundown on what realistically to expect out of live, love, career and everything in between. I may have even been able to avoid my ex-husband!!!

This is a must gift for any young person, maybe even younger than a high school graduate. It could actually put a kids expectations into the realm of reality without putting a damper on any of the joys of life. This is not a book that a conservative religious advocate would have to avoid. It contains simple comman sense about life and how it differs from what kids would often see on TV, movies, or any other media they would encounter. It doesn't tell you what belief system is best, just what life is most apt to hand you on any given day.

It is easy reading and not very beefy, so even non-readers would benefit. They could use it as a reference book for a specific situation.

Great Birthday or Graduation or Holiday gift and reasonable priced, too.

I bought Maria's book "What's Heaven" for my Granddaughter when her Grandmother (my mother) died 6 years ago. Now my Granddaughter will graduate from high school next year and Maria has followed her to college, with her last 2 books. Next I will buy my Granddaughter the Marlo Thomas books. As a Grandmother I believe it does take a Village. My Granddaughter will take 2 real good role models with her to college and now we have to set her free.

3 out of 5 stars Worth the Read, but Not the Money.......2006-01-05

Maria did have some excellent points. The majority of the book is just an autobiography, though, and I skimmed through those parts. My advice would be to stop by the book store and look at the table of contents and then the very end where she gives a list of some other things she wishes she knew, because they explain themselves. A lot of her things I already knew, and she points out that she's not trying to help us avoid those things, just let us know we're not alone. If the great, talented Maria could get through life, then we can too! That was sarcasm.

          4 out of 5 stars A quick pick-me-up........2005-11-07

After seeing and admiring the interaction between Maria Shriver and her mother on the Oprah Winfrey show a few months ago, I decided I wanted to read her newest book, "And One More Thing Before You Go." My library didn't have it but they did have this one and so I decided to take it home.

What I appreciated most about this book were the tidbits of wisdom about humility, and the ways we should appreciate ourselves and not allow others to beat us down. I like how Shriver says that humility is about having a realistic self-image-- not beating ourselves up for not being good enough and not settling for mediocrity. I liked Shriver's advice that we are not superwomen (or supermen) and we can not be excellent in every area so we should decide what areas are most important to us and make realistic goals to strive for. It inspired me to think about what areas of my life I'd like to improve in and what areas can wait until a different phase in life.
