This is possibly the best (definitely one of the best) existing books on the history of Old Orchard Beach. The book's format makes a fascinating subject also an easy read. It is extemely unfortunate that the book is out of print--if you have any interest in Old Orchard Beach's history, this book is a must read.

For Sinatra fans, 2000 was a very good year. First came the discography Put Your Dreams Away; then, the newsy exposé of the Chairman's FBI dossier, The Sinatra Files; and now, his life story as seen by his younger daughter Tina. Besides inside family stuff, Tina knows about Frank's life from having produced the CBS miniseries about him. The most publicized item in the book concerns Frank's kind words with the Mafia on behalf of JFK's campaign. But, beware the common belief that the Mafia stole the election for JFK--this is dubious--and don't miss out on all of the more interesting stories in the book. There's irony: JFK personally persuaded United Artists to make Sinatra's best film, that classic of Presidential-assassination conspiracy, The Manchurian Candidate. There's squalor: Before the Mafia helped him through his career slump, Frank walked past an Eddie Fisher movie marquee and promptly attempted suicide. There's poignance: "I'm not home much, but I'm a pretty damned good father," Frank unconvincingly claimed. Nancy Barbato Sinatra--the mother of Tina, Nancy, and Frank Jr.--comes off as saintly. Ava Gardner was nice to the kids, but a comparably neurotic brawler with Frank. Mia Farrow, Tina's schoolmate, was delightful, inclined to intense relationships with father figures (Salvador Dalì, Yul Brynner), eccentric, and not as frail and malleable as she looked and Frank probably hoped: "She was just as career-driven as Ava, and probably more independent," writes Tina. "Mia was more of a day person, while the only dawns my father saw were on the back end of a hard day's night." Barbara Marx Sinatra, according to embittered Tina, made Frank's last 12 years a living hell. (Barbara has declined to comment on Tina's charges.)

In straightforward prose that's studded with interesting facts (did you know Frank would tip $200 if you parked his car?) and 86 photos, Tina Sinatra paints a lively portrait of her inconsolably lonely pop-star pop. And she did it her way. Deal with it. --Tim Appelo

                    Book Description

A startling, compelling, yet affectionate portrait of an American entertainment legend by his youngest daughter, who for the first time writes about the man, his life, the accusations, and about the many people who surrounded him -- wives, friends, lovers, users, and sycophants -- from his Hoboken childhood through the notorious "Rat Pack," and beyond.

Complete with many never before seen photographs taken directly from family albums, and placing special emphasis on his later years and his marriage to Barbara Marx Sinatra, Tina's personal exploration of this difficult final period in her father's career will solidify our image of Sinatra as a great performer and reinforce him as something even greater: as a father, and as man.

5 out of 5 stars A Poignant, Tender Tribute To A Remarkable Man.......2007-08-31

I thought I'd read it all, seen it all and heard everything there was hear or know about F.S. but, curiously enough, I never bought this book! It was given to me at a time in my life when I had stopped reading about all the celebrities I had ever wanted to. The day before yesterday I found this book in the place I had put it years ago, next to all the other books about F.S. that I had read through the years. The books fill the space between Ava Gardner's, "Ava, My Story" and Mia Farrow's, "What Falls Away." I cannot thank Tina Sinatra enough for sharing her world with her father with us and Jeff Coplon for co-writing. This is the definitive book on Frank Sinatra, the man. Tina takes you on her journey and journal of loving memories about her relationship with her father over many years. From his final months as the husband of Nancy Barbato Sinatra until his death at age 82, Tina rode the F.S. rollercoaster which was her father's life. Through it all, the highs, the lows, the failed marriages F.S. remained loyal, respectful, loving, caring and protective of his first and only family. Then came Barbara Marx. If Leona Helmsley was the "Queen of Mean" this, then, was her adoring protege. How Tina, Nancy Frankie, Jr. or Nancy, Sr. tolerated this wretched individual is beyond comprehension, however, they respected her as the wife of their father. Respect was absolute in the real Sinatra family and he taught his family well. It was because of Barbara that Tina, Nancy or Frankie, Jr. did not have the opportunity of being with him in the final moments of his life. His children were everything to him and he garnered their esteem by never smothering them, never being judgmental and by always trying to be there when any of them needed him. As complex as he was, he was a pretty darned good father. To see him through Tina's eyes is to know who he really was when the glitz and the glitter were stripped away. This is a must read for any true Sinatra fan.

                    5 out of 5 stars My father's daughter.......2007-02-07

Really enjoyed this book! Tina did a great job of giving us some insights into her father and some of his actions.
I can't imagine that any Sinatra fan would not enjoy this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars A LONELY MAN.......2006-02-23

Of all the "Sinatra" books I have read over the years this one gives the greatest insight into how lonely the genius Sinatra really was. Throughout her childhood she watched. She watched and took in the tantrums, the frustration, the misery, the elation and the more sinister aspects of the mans life.

A frank account of Sinatra, (excuse the pun) from a daughter born in the first success period of Sinatra's life.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book.......2004-04-29

I have been exposed to Frank Sinatra's music all my life, and been a fan of his since I was 9. However, after reading this book, I feel I know him in a way like never before, in a more detailed, intimate way. I truly understand the kind of man and person he was. Tina does an outstanding and thorough job explaining the man her father was, from all points. She describes what he was like as a father, husband, friend, performer, etc. She leaves nothing out, nor does she sugar-coat the story. She tells the truth, in an honest, loving, respectful way. I am proud to say I own this book, and have enjoyed it very much. It's a must for all fellow Sinatra fans. My hats off to her- great job, Tina!

                    5 out of 5 stars Interesting & fast read!.......2003-07-01

                    Good Read!!!

I have read several other books about Frank Sinatra which chronicle his childhood, the bobbysox years, the Rat Pack years, the Mia years, etc. However, this is the first book I have come across that goes into detail regarding his years of marriage to Barbara Marx & the last years of his life. That alone makes the book fascinating as it fills in missing gaps.

Furthermore, the fact that the book is written from an insider's perspective helps in making it a riveting read. The book flows smoothly and quickly and I don't feel like Tina tries to sugarcoat her father' life (which is how I felt when I read a book written by Nancy Sinatra Jr.). Tina mentions both his good and bad sides and she is very candid in her feelings and emotions regarding her family and father.

The only thing I really wonder is why did Frank stay married to a money-grubbing, social climber for so long? He could have had his pick of beautiful woman, so why her? I would love to know what was really going on in his mind regarding his last marriage, but as he is dead and gone we may never know.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Daughter's Shining Perspective.......2005-09-09

I have loved Mr. Sinatra since I was very young, have heard most of the bad stuff about him, and it seems that this book's purpose is to discuss his GOOD qualities. Which is a proper perspective from a daughter. If a father has raised his daughter well, she will recognize his faults, but focus on the things that made him a hero in her eyes. Remember that notion? I lost my mother in death at about the same age that Frank and Nancy Sr. divorced, and I appreciate the closeness that developed between the man and his oldest daughter. It's a precious thing. It's a mistake to read the book without understanding that it's biased. But almost ANY book about him will be, as will any book written by a daughter about her father. I'm glad for both of them that their relationship was that sweet, and for us, that we get to see a glimpse of it.
Whatever else he was,the man was..... a man. And a father. And an incredible influence on our culture. I think all that shows up in this book, and I loved it. There's plenty of other people to demonize him, thank you Nancy for letting us see the other side.

3 out of 5 stars Some good stories and then there's Nancy's babbling..........2003-11-06

I liked the stories about Frank Sinatra told in this book. Any story or interview about him fascinates me, so that's an easy accomplishment. It was nice to hear stories about him from his daughter's POV. But please, spare me the talk of your own career. Write your own biography if you want to talk about that. Also, you can just so tell LOVES the fact that she is Frank Sinatra's daughter. Innumerable references to him as "Daddy" well into adulthood - who calls their Dad "Daddy" after the age of 10? Even in her speeches of today, she calls him that. OK. We get it. You're his daughter. Whoop dee doo. Get over yourself. Otherwise, this book is an interesting read and you learn a little more about the greatest singer that has ever graced the globe.

                              Book Description

"On the night of February 10, 1943, at the moment I was born, my identity was sent into exile. At age 53 I learned for the first time what my mother had never before told me: I am Frank Sinatra's daughter."
                              Julie Sinatra

Imagine what you would do as this shocking news about who you are comes as the spotlights are rapidly fading from your legendary father's life-you have missed all of this man who has lived larger than life.

Julie's story is both fascinating and compelling. Her desire to meet her father fuels her determination to out the facts surrounding her birth and establish her rights. She meets with resistance from Sinatra family members on all fronts. They work to block her efforts to meet her father and become legally recognized in the courts.

As the outsider child longing to know the man behind the mystique, Julie provides a new provocative look at Frank Sinatra-their shared temperaments, philosophies and spirituality. Hers is a very moving and inspirational story about the unknown blue-eyed daughter's journey to her own identity . she had to find him to find her.

4 out of 5 stars Thanks, Julia, For Telling Us This Story.......2007-06-20

This is a sad story by a lost child, in a world flooded by lost children. How ironic that's she's the daughter of a man who gave so many millions to sick and handicapped children the world over. Forget whether you love the man as a singer, or hate him for his tough guy image; this is a poignant story.

Having said that, let me say thanks, Julie, for writing this book. I am one of the former group who has loved your father as a singer since 1964, coincidentally the same year the Beatles overwhelmed us who were teenagers then. Yes, I loved rock and roll, but I was completely overwhelmed by your Dad and his music.

Two friends and I went on to collect all of his older music, and anticipate each new album as it came out. We saw him live almost a dozen times. One time we were stage side at a supper club outside of Chicago. A woman came up behind us to offer him a bouquet of flowers. Right above us he reached out for the gift and she grasped his hand, momentarily pulling him off balance. I remember a fleeting expression of panic on his face as he almost toppled over on to our table. He recovered and made a comment something like "I love you too, baby", and the audience loved it.

There was nobody quite like him, and I still play the music, now on CD. Julie's book puts a human face on the man and the family. I imagine celebrities are always besieged by people wanting something, and all of us protect our elderly parents, so the family's reluctance to acknowledge (or look into the possibility of) another sibling is, I suppose, to be expected. Plus the rich always have people sucking around them.

Give it to Julie for almost immediately establishing herself as a sympathetic and sincere individual just looking for her father. It somewhat reminds me of Rod McKuen's book called "Finding My Father" from about 25 years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Secrets of the Rich and Greedy.......2007-04-20

Not knowing I was about to read two books with similar storylines, I picked up "The Testament" by John Grisham and "Morning Noon & Night" by Sidney Sheldon. After reading the first, I went right into the second book and for 95% of the story was hooked. It was the conclusion that did me in. Harry Stanford, billionaire, dies in a boating accident, falling off the deck of his yacht, the result of rough, choppy waters. He is survived by his three children, Judge Tyler Stanford, Kendall Stanford Renaud and Woodrow (Woody) Stanford who all have their own demons to fight and the inheritance would greatly chase away many of those demons. Along comes Julia Stanford, illegitimate daughter of Harry and another heir to the estate. The story takes its twists and turns with serious intrigue and deadly maneuvers plotted out in order to destroy Julia and cut her out of her share of the estate. Tyler needs to hold on to his lover, Lee, who definitely likes the finer things that big money can buy, Kendall and her husband, Marc, could use the money to pay off her anonymous blackmailer once and for all, and Woody and Peggy would definitely benefit by it in order to help Woody kick his heroin addiction. They have paid their dues growing up with a father's vindictive treatment, something Julia did not have to endure. Who is out to get Julia? Is Julia really Julia or just another greedy gold digger? The reader is astute to the true villain, however, he/she is very smart and his/her plan seems iron clad until the end when all unravels very quickly in a matter of just a few pages. Considering the amount of intrigue and resolution needed to be accomplished, this story would definitely had been a five-star novel had that one element had been expounded upon.

5 out of 5 stars And to Think It All Started With "The Naked Face"..........2006-01-15

THE NAKED FACE was amatuerish when I look back at all that Sydney Sheldon has done since then. Since "The Other Side of Midnight" I have had a bias toward Sydney Sheldon's writing style. He is brilliant. The book shines again...and makes you wonder what all is in that mind of his. Getting older seems to move him toward his best. The way he introduces you to the characters in a way that makes you love them, hate them, not trust them, pity them...have numerous emotions about them...so much so that you WANT to know the story. The story almost becomes an aside. You need to know the characters' stories by the time you know them. He takes you all over the world...you travel to places you never dreamed of...and you are completely in Sydney Sheldon's world while your read. Read his entire collection. It is time well spent...and such entertainment!

                              4 out of 5 stars Page turner.......2005-05-12

Yet another good one fron Sheldon.
Harry Stanford, a billionaire dies leaving his fortune to his three children , judge Tyler , fashion designer Kendall and polo player Woody. His children reunite after their father's death and find out that his will states that his fortune should also be shared with his illegimate daughter Julia.
It turns out that Julia's mom had been their nanny but she leaves after her employer makes her pregnant. After that,Julia and her mom live in a different place away from Harry Stanford.Meanwhile Mrs.Harry Stanford commits suicide, not being able to bear the humiliation her husband has bestowed upon her. Tyler, Kendall and Woody blame their father for their mother's death ( which is very correct).
Now will Julia come seeking for her fortune?
                              A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Are all Multibillionaire Families Like This?.......2005-04-02

Having recently finished John Grisham's The Testament, I'm wondering if the similarities in plots are a coincidence or if this is a typical characteristic in extremely wealthy families that makes great fodder for mystery writers all over the world.

Both The Testament and Morning, Noon and Night focus on the death of the rich patriarch who seem like good guys, but in reality, are both cruel, heartless and self-centered egomaniacs. Although the death in The Testament was a suicide, the death of Harry Stanford in Morning, Noon and Night is either an accident or a murder. Sidney Sheldon leaves it up to the reader to try to figure out. He does give you the answer, which should surprise even the most die-hard armchair crime sleuth, but you have to wait until the very end to get those answers!

Both books showcase offspring who have had little to do with their father for most of their lives (except to pop in when they want something, especially large chunks of money). After the deaths of the fathers, the children are all overwrought with emotions and act like grieving, loving children, while wondering how much money they will inherit and plotting how they will spend it. Then you have them trying to cheat their siblings out of their imagined shares. Both Sheldon and Grisham seem to be painting a very ugly picture when this amount of money is involved.

Both Morning, Noon and Night and The Testament involve an illegitimate daughter who stands to inherit millions. The big difference is that in The Testament, she's an innocent player, while in Morning, Noon and Night, Julia may be a key factor in her father's death!

Unlike most of Sidney Sheldon's books, Morning, Noon and Night focuses on four siblings instead of one main character with a strong, clearly defined individuality. As the journey takes the reader through murder, revenge, blackmail, greed, hate, and miscellaneous other mayhem, it's difficult to put the book down, even for a few minutes.

Morning, Noon and Night is definitely a page-turner and you'll find it difficult to spread reading the book over a few days time - you'll want to finish it in one sitting! Sidney Sheldon doesn't let us down with the ending, as it's unexpected and unanticipated.

Morning, Noon and Night is one of my favorite novels by Sidney Sheldon. If you've never read one of his books, I'd recommend starting with this one or Master of the Game.

1 out of 5 stars Simply dreadful! [may contain "spoilers", beware!] :).......2004-10-09

I was shocked by the poor quality of the writing from such a well-known author. Though published in 1995, the reader is expected to ignore the then-well-known realities of DNA testing -- for instance, that shared parentage can be proved by comparing the DNA of siblings, not just from putative sibling to parent.

We're also asked to ignore the realities of fingerprint identification when it would have been immediately helpful in revealing an imposter's criminal record and actual identity.

Adding insult to injury, after ignoring the technique when it logically would have come into play, Sheldon brings in fingerprinting at the very tail of the book, in a complicated scenario involving latent prints to identify not the missing heiress, but rather, a private detective!

Every plot development was telegraphed in advance, and the decedent went from being rather interesting in the first few pages to a one-dimensional (and repetitive) demon throughout the rest of the too-long tome. Even the vocabulary and sentence structure were overly simplistic.

If you want to read the identical plot but done WELL, try "Amanda" by Kay Hooper, also published in 1995. Hooper has her character do some marvelously stupid things (again, failing to exploit DNA to the fullest in a timely way), but Hooper's vocabulary, syntax, character development and settings are vastly better than the careless work Sheldon provides in "Morning, Noon, & Night." I read the books only a week apart. Hooper's work was engaging, though somewhat predictable; Sheldon's was irritating, and ENTIRELY predictable.
