3 out of 5 stars Basic.......2007-10-04

Very basic book, mostly for those who are absolute beginners in photography or for point-and-shooters that are upgrading to SLR.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Users.......2007-09-27

I purchased this book after reading reviews and having people suggest this literature to me. I have to say that the author makes it very straightforward, concise and comfortable to read. For a amateur photographer, this book is a gem and I highly suggest reading it just to familiarize yourself with the basic conceps of exposure and how you apply it to both digital and film photography.

5 out of 5 stars If You Can Only Afford One Photography Book, THIS IS THE ONE!!!.......2007-09-26

I purchased this book over a year ago and have since bought several more copies to give to my friends that are into photography. It is by far one of the best books out there for teaching ANYONE about correct exposures!! It's a very easy read, I have read it through at least three times, and this guy knows his stuff. There are so many beautiful full page color photos to demonstrate what he is talking about and he gives his settings for all the shots. If you are just starting out in photography, or have been into it for a while, I feel EVERYONE can learn something from this book. After reading this book, obtaining a 'proper exposure' in-camera clicked for me. I gained a thorough understanding of shutter speed, ISO, aperature/f-stop, light, composition, depth of field and many more very important aspects of photography, everything made sense, opened up new creative doors for me. I still don't always achieve the perfect exposure, but I do have complete control over my camera and settings, the whys and how-to-fors. If you can only afford ONE book, this is the one. I rarely do book reviews, but this one deserves it! I submitted some of my own photos above, using various techniques in photography, all learned from this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-09-26

No question, this is an excellent book. I am a intermediate level photographer, it is filled with great tips. Stop reading this and buy the book!

5 out of 5 stars That is what I wanted! All-in-one book for amateurs who want to master photography - both digital and film.......2007-09-21

Well, I never expected to write a review, but I did because this book is what I was looking for. I've been using camera for decades now, but I was mainly point-and-shoot photographer. Yes, everybody liked my pictures but I really did not know how to be consistent in the results. So I got myself a new Nikon D80 and undertook to learn how to take pictures with full control over the process. I browsed through Amazon in search of "become a concious photographer book for dummies" and I ended up buying this book and Ansel Adams's "Camera".
This book has everything you need to move from amateur to prosumer photographer. It expalains what is exposure and light and how you can control it. It gives you hints on metering and some basic special techniques. What is very important is that it gives you plenty of color pictures with short stories on how they were taken and data on exposure parameters so you can check how they impact the final result.
So get this one if you would like to buy one book which would allow you to undersatnd how to take beautiful and creative pictures! I guess that when you finally get it and read it you will be hungry for more information. But then you can get books on specific subjects - here - you have all the basics that you need.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-07-04

This is one of the best books on photography I've read so far. Lots of great tips and ideas. I really like the down to earth language he uses to explain his concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for self-improvement.......2007-06-08

The book is written in plain English, easy to understand and very enlightening.

I would recommend to amateur photographer and even beginners who like to know more about Digital photography, Photoshop and more.

3 out of 5 stars Nice for the beginner.......2007-05-17

For the digital newbie, or photography newbie for that matter, this is a nice intro book. I'm sure that a lot of the techie issues that other reviewers are calling Mr. Peterson to task on will be addressed in a 2nd edition.

There is enough information on photographic concepts and techniques to redeem the book for some of the technical flaws regarding digital images (See Rennie Petersen's review for info on the techie stuff).

If you haven't read "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson I'd highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Ignore the digital techie parts.......2007-05-01

I purchased this book when I got my first camera and knew nothing about photography but quite a bit about the physics of light and computers. This book helped me take some great shots because it does a great job of explaining, in simple to understand terms, photography basics and provides a plethora of pictures to illustrate the concepts. If you are a rank beginner, this book will walk you through aperture, f stops, the basics of exposure and basic composition to produce good photos and I highly recommend it for that purpose.

The technical aspects of the book -- both digital camera components and computer formats -- range from dumbed down to the point of being overstated to plainly wrong, an issue covered in several other reviews. However, they do give enough of an introduction to allow one to understand better, more accurate and more detailed discussions of technical components. If you know nothing about the "digital" (as opposed to film) side of cameras and formats, it serves as a readable introduction to the meaning of the terms. Be aware that most of the information beyond what the terms mean is wrong.

If you are anything more than a rank beginner I suggest you skip this book. If you are just starting out and more than a little intimidated by the seemingly complex world of "taking a good picture" then you will the book of value.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent first book.......2007-03-29

This is a really great book to start off with. It explains all the basics and more. Easy to understand and full of great ideas and techniques, interspersed with humor. Sound ideas that will help you become a better photographer. Excellent style of writing. I've really enjoyed and have have learned from his books.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you enjoy textbook-style books..........2005-12-07

If you enjoy textbook-style books, you will like this one. The author teaches the subject at a college and the influence of college textbooks is evident in this book.

Biggest pluses of this book are its rather comprehensive coverage of digital photograhy, lots of text, and very few pictures as space fillers. This should be viewed as of a technical book of with emphasis on the digital aspects of ...digital photography.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and Helpful.......2005-08-28

As an instructor of Photography and Digital Imagaging, I have found it difficult to recommend texbooks that incorporate ALL the most important points of capturing, transmitting, printing, storing, archiving and copyright of digital images. I generally need to list several titles to cover these various topics. Understanding digital photography covers these in a very concise, logical and easy to comprehend manner. This book is timely, informative, accurate and thorough. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to jump into to the art and technique of digital photography. I especially praise its use for instructional value. I am replacing next year's text with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Approach to Digital Photography.......2005-04-06

Understanding Digital Photography has a very interesting approach to explaining digital photography. It is not the usual general photography book with the word "digital" thrown in for marketing. I like the way the author compares traditional photography with digital photography to explain the way things work in a logical way. This book is also not just a computer or technical book. It is easy to read, and I like that you do not need to read the chapters in order to understand the information.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to understand more about Digital PHOTOGRAPHY.

5 out of 5 stars A very practical introduction to digital photography !.......2004-09-09

This book is a very practical introduction to digital photography. I teach photography and use it as a text book. As for the one negative feedback item I see here, "A disaster", I would suggest you weigh the value of all of all of the other positive feedback items.

My students find the book to be quite easy to understand, and have expressed their pleasure with the constant comparisons between traditional and digital photography. They believe that this author's approach to digital photography allows for an easy understanding of the media, in context with photography as a whole. Also, I know of a number of other photography instructors that have chosen to use this book as their text at the College and University levels!

This book is a solid work for the budding digital photographer.

1 out of 5 stars A disaster.......2004-04-08

I have read only 80 pages of this book and I had to stop. The authors lack of command of the English language is only exceeded by his inability to explain relatively simple concepts in plain language. There were so many errors of fact that I cannot comprehend how this got past the editors. Any eighth grader can tell you that 1600 x 2000 x 3 does not equal 5.76 million. All of this in the first 3 chapters where the author is still dealing with the basics. I cannot imagine what happens when he gets to the more complicated subjects. Avoid this book like the plague.

4 out of 5 stars Intended for the first time owner of a digital camera........2004-03-20

This is the perfect book for the first time owner of a digital camera. The author explains basic terminology and how pixels and resolution effect the photographs, and guides the reader through how to transfer, edit, process and archive the photos.

It is not a guide on how to take photos, nor is it highly technical. It is designed for the first time user answering many of the questions and easing the confusion felt when entering the digital world. I am buying it for my sister-in-law and my 75 year old father, who both recently purchased cameras and are struggling with the understanding what resolution to use, how to print the photos, etc.

I wish I had this book years ago when I purchased my first digital camera.

1 out of 5 stars A Book for Author's Friends Only.......2004-01-16

I'm afraid I for one cannot figure out the purpose of this book. It reads like something the writer should have simply photocopied and passed out among her friends. It is neither a very knowledgeable digital photography book, nor an amusing account of the author's introduction to digital cameras. (Shenton's illustrations are quite funny, however!)Lessing's description of memory fails to even mention SD or MM cards. Her description of photo software just covers her opinion of the few she has used. She's a Sony user who states there are no really good HP or Kodak digital cameras; although she admits her opinion there might become outdated, which it certainly has. Actually, the whole book is outdated, even though it was just published in 2003, and just hit my local library as a "new" book.Take my advice, which is no worse than the author's advice--take the money you would spend buying this book, and instead get a year's subscription to PC Photo magazine.PC Photo will give you the latest information on digital cameras, memory, scanners, printers and software...and will give you much, much more knowledgeable, as well as easy to understand, advice about picture taking, storage, editing and burning.

I couldn't agree with the previous review writer more. This is an outstanding book. If, however, you're just starting out in digital photography and want to learn the basics, this book may offer more detail than you want. If you're a bit farther along and want to know some things like how sensors work or why lenses made for digital photography differ from lenses made for film cameras, this is your book. The author goes into quite a bit of technical detail in a way that is never overwhelming and usually a lot of fun.
The book is also printed well and the numerous illustrations are excellent.

Understanding Digital Cameras: Getting the Best Image from Capture to Output, by Jon Tarrant. Focal Press, Elsevier: Amsterdam, Boston, London, etc. Paperback, 346 Pages, 2007, [...]
Reviewed by David J. Marcou for Publication on amazon.com --

Two very worthy elements reside side-by-side in this excellent follow-up to the 2003 predecessor book by this gifted author, `Digital Camera Techniques' - i.e., excellent technical insights into every aspect of digital camera work, and human touches of kindness and interest.
Jon Tarrant has put in his time over the years experimenting with and analyzing cameras, prints, and related photographic equipment and supplies, especially with regard to the human life around us. And though he always writes with a fresh eye for that life, he has paid his dues. He has edited three international photo magazines, including the `British Journal of Photography,' and he still writes technical studies for that magazine. He has also contributed both writing and photos to many other magazines, newspapers, and books. In addition, he is very good about employing others in his books, like other photographers (including Paul Stewart, Michael Ruskin, and Andrew Stevens), who have joined him with model images that teach in basic and advanced ways, how to operate and utilize digital cameras and images.
One lesson of particular merit is the notion that a flash warning light should not always be heeded. Too many times, people use flash to spoil images, by wiping out visual details in the foreground, like shadows and silhouettes that would be gorgeous without flash. On the other hand, Jon also points out how fill-in flash can be advantageous, as when one is shooting a family portrait with family members standing backs to the sun. Other key lessons include keeping your subject in focus despite, or while showing, movement or complex fields of view. Fine-art printing is also covered, as is color quality, plus working with models, among many related subjects here. Jon also points out that a photo should generally be in-focus when made, but that the Normal setting not the Fine/Sharp setting should be utilized in-camera, with exceptions to be sure, so the image can be sharpened further, on-computer.
In `Understanding Digital Cameras', one feels that Jon Tarrant fully understands each camera's and subject's basics and nuances, and imparts his carefully obtained wisdom to the reading public - a public he continues to capably educate in the most advanced forms of modern photography.
