Las historias contadas en este libro son reales. El capítulo 1 es introductorio y se refiere al ADN. La trama de los capítulos 2 y 9 es policial y sangrienta (la primera vez que un estudio de ADN fue usado como evidencia en un juicio y el caso del asesino Zodíaco). El 4 y el 6 exploran los albores de la humanidad (las historias de Lucy, Eva y otras mujeres de las que desciende la actual humanidad; el Hombre de Neandertal y su posible parentesco con los seres humanos). El 3 y el 8 abordan temas históricos: una tradición milenaria (los descendientes de Aarón, el primer sacerdote judío) y un misterio moderno (cómo se demostró que los huesos encontrados en un bosque ruso pertenecían a los miembros de la última familia imperial). El capítulo 5, que es variado, incluye un escándalo presidencial; el 7 tiene que ver con la inexistencia de las razas humanas y el por qué de tantos colores de piel. Aunque cada historia comienza y termina en un solo capítulo, hay un hilo que las enhebra a todas como las cuentas de un collar. Ese hilo es el ADN. Dirigido al público en general, dedica bastante espacio a explicar conceptos biológicos que están íntimamente ligados con las historias contadas, evitando lo más posible la jerga técnica. Al final hay un Glosario para que lo consulten quienes se encuentren con términos desconocidos.
