Book Description
Las historias contadas en este libro son reales. El capítulo 1 es introductorio y se refiere al ADN. La trama de los capítulos 2 y 9 es policial y sangrienta (la primera vez que un estudio de ADN fue usado como evidencia en un juicio y el caso del asesino Zodíaco). El 4 y el 6 exploran los albores de la humanidad (las historias de Lucy, Eva y otras mujeres de las que desciende la actual humanidad; el Hombre de Neandertal y su posible parentesco con los seres humanos). El 3 y el 8 abordan temas históricos: una tradición milenaria (los descendientes de Aarón, el primer sacerdote judío) y un misterio moderno (cómo se demostró que los huesos encontrados en un bosque ruso pertenecían a los miembros de la última familia imperial). El capítulo 5, que es variado, incluye un escándalo presidencial; el 7 tiene que ver con la inexistencia de las razas humanas y el por qué de tantos colores de piel. Aunque cada historia comienza y termina en un solo capítulo, hay un hilo que las enhebra a todas como las cuentas de un collar. Ese hilo es el ADN. Dirigido al público en general, dedica bastante espacio a explicar conceptos biológicos que están íntimamente ligados con las historias contadas, evitando lo más posible la jerga técnica. Al final hay un Glosario para que lo consulten quienes se encuentren con términos desconocidos.

SPSS: Opportunity to see statistics in real-life settings.......2005-08-03
SPSS allows the researcher to enter and review data on a home computer, thus allowing time and analysis possibly not available with trips to the campus library. Opportunities will continue after your class for entering your own data collection projects.
STUDENT VERSION LIMITATIONS.......2003-12-23
Students who are purchasing this product along with the CDROM should be aware that the student version is limited to 1500 cases. I recently purchased SPSS 11.0 (student version) and have not been able to use it due to such limitations. It is fine for in class assignments, but does not serve the needs of graduate students who intend to conduct research in excess of 1500 cases. You may want to invest in the non-student version to eliminate the need to purchase two SPSS programs. This limitation should be fully discolsed on the website.
Excellent, but not the full version.......2003-03-29
Note that this version, while as good as the first, is not suitable for Ph.D. students. It is only for undergraduates and for MBA students. The program is up to its usual excellent standards.

This is a very good step-by-step book for conducting data analysis with SPSS. Even though I now have SPSS 12 and I think they are releasing version 13 soon, most of the instructions are still the same.
essential to making SPSS painless.......2003-11-17
This book has been an essential tool for me, both for wandering in the world of statistics, and specifically SPSS. I've worked with the book from its earlier stages, and the consistency and updates are appreciated. It's an excellent reference for those who use SPSS regularly or casually. The book politely avoids labelling readers as dummies, but really, the book goes into very simple steps, as well as illustrations for a new user, but at the same time has shortcuts, and easy references for regular users. I'm not sure if the "Dummies" series has an SPSS manual, but I think that this book exceeds the "Dummies" series by being easy to use, follow, and read. A must have for any research. I've met with George, and this is a man that knows the methods and the program. No technical jargon, just simple straightforwards answers about SPSS. The only drawback...color would be nice, but of course, the price would increase...so don't worry about it.

SPSS Review.......2007-01-03
Good book. Nice that it comes with SPSS Student Version software CD. (I didn't notice that for at least a month--it's in the back of the book.) The authors try to write in a cutesy, friendly way. Kinda fun sometimes. There are some typos in the book that caused me grief--in particular in the assignments at the end of chapters (that's how my professor assigned homework from the book). Some of the things in the book I thought could've been explained better. Overall, though, it's a good book. If you're a Mac user, by the way, and you have an Intel Mac, you can run this program on your Mac using Parallel (which I got for $79). OR, if you have another Mac (or even the Intel one) you can use Apple's beta version of BootCamp. Parallel just allows you to run Windows and Mac OS X at the same time.
