Customer Reviews:
A wonderful, concise reference book about old time radio.......2004-12-17
Ron Lackmann's Encyclopedia of American Radio is a great book to have in a library. The descriptions of the celebrated radio programs of the past and the hundreds of short biographies of many of the most popular radio actors of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, as well as those of several current radio performers, are informative and clearly and simply written. Most important, this is a fine reference book for anyone who wants to read about "old time" radio. The photographs in the book are really excellent and I have never seen most of them anywhere else before, in spite of the fact that I have read about old time radio extensively. This is a good book for young people who want to learn more about a radio show or a performer of the past they might have heard about in passing. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in entertainment of the past.
Nearly useless........2004-11-30
The only useful thing about this infuriating -- and inaccurate-- book is the selection of photos. Otherwise, get Dunning.
Errors in book detract from its value.......2003-04-08
Nice photos, but how much faith can you put into the text when simple errors stick out like sore thumbs
For instance:
Man Called X: Ken Thurston did not have a girlfriend and had nothing to do with the Cafe Tamborine (that was an entirely different program.)
Jack Moyles did NOT replace Frank Sinatra as Rocky Fortune. That series ended when Sinatra left it. Moyles DID star in Rocky Jordan, an entirely different show.
It is little things like this and make the book suspect for me. How many more errors are in this book? What can one take as fact and not with a grain of salt?
Excellent concept, faulty execution. I would not buy this book again and am considering returning my copy for credit. I do not consider this book to be a valuable reference item. Casual reading yes...reference work...no
Great Job Ron Lackmann.......2002-08-01
This book, The Encyclopedia of American Radio, is an excellent, comprehensive compilation of facts and photos relating to radio shows and personalities of the past that were part of Radio's Golden Age...the thirties, forties and fifties. It is a very fond look back at those days when we all gathered around the family radio and listened to such great shows as The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, The Lux Radio Theater, Jack Benny, et al. The amount of information given in this book is vast and the Appendices, which lists hundreds of dramatic anthology shows and personalities not given separate entries in the book, is extensive. An amazing achievememnt and it is Fun to read and not dull, which is more than I can say for other less well written Radio Encyclopedias that have been published in the last few years. Congratulations, Mr. Lackmann, for a job well done.

Book Description
Canada: A Celebration from A to Z is an important survey of the people, events, and history of a country that holds peace and tolerance in the highest regard.
Author Ray Solitaire, a respected chronicler of the countryÂ's much-lauded embrace of social, economic, racial, and sexual justice since the 1960s, takes an in-depth look at the many unique aspects of Canadian life in order to expose the countryÂ's exciting and true narrative to a wider audience. Liberally spiced with groundbreaking analyses and commentary, Canada: A Celebrationwill trigger comment among Canadians across the political spectrum.
With uncompromising objectivity, Solitaire also explores many issues of import to Canadians and other inheritors of world culture. Sure to enlighten both the casual browser and the questing historian alike, little escapes SolitaireÂ's daring, thought-provoking investigations into the warp and woof of modern Canadian society. From the Avro Arrow imbroglio and Whole Language to curling and maple syrup, serious students of Canadian culture and those interested in learning more about this country will find Canada: A Celebration to be an invaluable reference guide.

Attack on Canada.......2006-04-24
This is the most poisonous, cold-hearted, terrible book I have ever read. It makes fun of everything that is great about Canada, including our wonderful health care system, gay marriages, and even the peerless Pierre Trudeau. I can't imagine why anyone would want to write something so mean-spirited. Definitely should not be read by students or other impressionable people. It is a dangerous, hurtful piece of right-wing propaganda, nothing more.

Very, very limited... and sometimes inaccurate.......2001-03-20
When I bought my first Fodor's Montreal & Quebec City some years ago for my first weekend trip to Montreal, I thought it was all right. It does contain useful maps with the obvious tourist destinations and hotels located for you. However, I have continued buying the new editions for my subsequent trips to Montreal and have discovered that they quickly outlive their usefulness. I find that the restaurant listings are VERY limited, considering the multitude of restaurants in the city of Montreal. Both the restaurant and hotel listings are not very lengthy and give you two options: pricey and "recommended," or budget and potentially scary. The listings for tourist attractions are generally good, with one major flaw: NONE OF THE LISTINGS FOR MONTREAL GIVE THE NEAREST METRO STOP!! If you have been to Montreal before, you'll know that almost every advertisement, sign, or newspaper article always gives you the nearest stop to their establishment on the city's all-important Metro system. If you haven't been there before, let me assure that not having this information is very, very frustrating.
As for accuracy: one of the attractions I went to (the Biosphere) is not open for the hours listed in this guide. It is open until 6 p.m. in the summer and 4 p.m. in the winter, neither of which is the time listed. It is not a short metro ride, either, which made me a very unhappy traveler. I have since spoken to 2 other people who tried to go to the Biosphere based on this information and found it closed. Also, there are no listings for either the Aquarium or the Planetarium, both of which I would have liked to see.
I feel like I have seen EVERY SINGLE THING POSSIBLE in Montreal (according to the Fodor's guide) in only a few short trips. This is hardly possible, given the richness, diversity, and beauty of this city. While my comments in this review are addressed mainly to Montreal, I have been to Quebec City only once (for the weekend) and feel like I saw almost everything they had listed. I would like to point out that this book is only an EXCERPT of Fodor's Canada 2001, and they didn't bother to give you any more information just because you were buying a book specifically on La Belle Province. I wish I knew a better guide to advise you to buy, but I am still looking for one.

Customer Reviews:
decent, but not great.......2004-01-09
Fodor's guidebooks are decent in that they provide short, simple facts and info on destinations. The Toronto guidebook is no different. The big complaint is the lack of good maps (though i can't be too picky, you can't really rely on maps in a paperback guidebook!). I tend to prefer frommer's guides, as i find their recommendations to be more bang on, and to my budget. I recommend using a combination of good guidebooks like frommers and Let's Go, in addition to the traveler-submitted hotel review sites like www.zoomandgo.com, or the ones on travelocity.
A fine book and great for first time travelers.......2001-04-25
I mainly use and still buy Fodor's series for most of my traveling for ease of use of the book and familiarity. However, I do have to admit that the maps could be more detailed. For budget or more seasoned travelers who prefer a detailed map of the walking tours and do not need the section about how to pack and where to keep your passport try the awesome Lonely Planet or something else. On the historical stuff, I would say this book is just fine. On my next travel (not to Toronto) I'll try Let's Go and Frommer's, heard lots of goody stuff about them and never use them before.
Reasonable city guide but mildly bland for Toronto........1999-07-03
This book begins with a short yet reasonable first orientation to the city with much of its bulk devoted to simple data in categorized lists.
Probably quite useful to someone who has never been to Toronto before but not the stimulating read the present-day "Megacity" deserves.
My personal impression was that while the guide does explicitly note the excitement of this new, diverse first city of Canada, it doesn't go far enough to actually capture or express it.
Yes, it is a fine book for what it is -- a city guide with lots of basic information -- but even there I had a couple of points of contention.
For one thing, as soon as I opened the book and saw the map of Toronto's location between Michigan and New York state, which I did like, I wondered, however, why one of the major freeways -- the 402 from Port Huron -- was left off.
Another example was the piece of information connecting Canada's federal official French-English language policy and highway signs. One has nothing to do with the other since traffic signs, regulations and highways are totally under Provincial not Federal jurisdiction. What concerned me here was the thought of visiting drivers getting the impression that driving regulations might be consistent throughout Canada.
It seems like the book is primarily targeted to Americans. If I am correct, Americans already know that Toronto is a new, big and exciting city before they even bother to pick up a book on it. The city guide which describes Toronto deserves to be a lot more motivating than that level of excitement which Fodor's standard format relegates to it's run-of-the-mill city guides.

The best books for travel!.......2001-07-01
Whenever my family decides to go on a vacation, we always try to get a Fodor's guide for the location we've picked. Great details about all local "must-sees", restaurants, adventuresome activities, and much more. I highly reccomend this book and other Fodor's travel books. Thanks to this book, a trip to Vancouver that may have been a total mess was spectacular and well planned!
