This book was so great, I can't imagine why someone would not like it. Some parts were so good, I reread them many times. WHY WE HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL, WHAT IS POLITICS were a few of my favorites but WHAT IS LOVE, WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE RICH AND OTHERS POOR were not so good. Overall, this book is a sure hit!

      Book Description

Did you know that school originally meant "free time"? Or that a
gymnasium was originally a "nude practice area"? Or that nachos are
named after Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, who created them? The fascinating
stories of these words and over three hundred more are told in More Word
Histories and Mysteries: From Aardvark to Zombie.

In this companion to the popular Word Histories and Mysteries:
From Abracadabra to Zeus, the most surprising stories in the history of
English vocabulary are told as a series of brief notes written in a lively and
entertaining style. Conveniently arranged in alphabetical order, the notes
explore all corners of the dictionary, from everyday words like flak and
sideburns to scientific terms like nitrogen to regionalisms like lagniappe.
The history of many words is traced back to Egypt, India, and other
      ancient cultures.

A short introduction sketches the history of the English language
and American regional dialects. A handy glossary defines special terms
for readers who wish to learn more about linguistics and also gives information
about the exotic languages that have enriched our vocabulary.
Photographs and drawings enliven the pages and illuminate the understanding
      of word histories.

Good, but ULTIMATE SACRIFICE the best book ever

While I thought this book was worthwhile in many respects (I am mentioned on several pages, as well), ULTIMATE SACRIFICE is simply the best book ever on the JFK assassination. Still, worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a reference book!.......2000-01-10

Looking for a great reference book on the JFK assassination? Tired of searching the bookstores? This book takes care of that. William Scott has written the most complete reference manual I have ever seen.

The book is broken down into two parts. Part One is people and places. From A to Z you find out a small snippet of information about everyone associated with JFK or the assassination.

Part 2 has 18 sections of reference information. From books to singed articles to unsigned articles you won't be able to find a more complete listing than right here. The amount of information is amazing.

This book is not a novel or a research project, rather it is a handy reference book that everyone, from novice to expert researcher should have with them at all times.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to finding the reputable needle in a haystack........1999-08-14

Sorting through all the extravagant theories of who killed JFK can become highly frustrating for the Kennedy enthusiast. So many wild ideas have circulated through our modern culture, most evident in Oliver Stone's JFK, that it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between possible truth and well conceived fiction. William Scott's new Reference Guide does just this for both the serious researcher and the interested hobbyist. Only the most reliable and historically accurate sources have been included in this research guide, so no longer does the JFK assassination enthusiast have to sort through the wild theories to discover the respectable facts. A must have for anyone serious about their research.

      4 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Dates - a Review.......2001-02-15

This dictionary is subdivided into five sections: Introduction; Dates, Index, Chronology of World Events; Chronology of Scientific Developments; Kings and Queens of England and the United Kingdom; Prime Ministers and Presidents.

It lists significant events on a daily basis such as the birth on 1 January of the British novelist Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849) and the poet Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-61) remembered for the verse "Thou shalt not kill: but need'st not strive Officiously to keep alive".

Each daily entry lists a myriad of interesting scientific, literary, social and historical facts. Walt Disney, American innovator in the movie world, was born 5 December 1901, and on this day in 1933 Americans witnessed the ending of prohibition.

The alphabetical index gives easy access to all events and people listed in the book. However, in some ways I found this rather tedious. For example the listing for Gilbert, Sir William Schwenck guides readers to 3, 13, 24 May; 18, 29 Nov. To find Sir William's birthday you must read all five entries but you will find no details of his death. The entry for 24 May does not refer to Sir William Schwenck Gilbert but to William Gilbert (1540-1603) the royal physician to Elizabeth I and James I. This William Gilbert does not appear in the index!

The Chronology of World Events lists events from Palaeolithic Man to modern times, often in great detail. Nevertheless, I found one entry very frustrating. In 1853 Beeching lists the invention of the syringe in France but does not identify the inventor.

The Chronology of Scientific Developments is subdivided into sections: Medical Science, Telecommunications Revolution, Space Exploration, and Computer Technology. It provides all the information possible within the confines of a small reference book and is a useful stepping stone to further research.

The final sections, Kings and Queens of England and the United Kingdom, and Prime Ministers and Presidents are exactly what their titles imply. Both are clearly laid out reference tools, interesting and invaluable to students and casual readers alike.

On the whole A Dictionary of Dates is a good read. For a small, barely larger than pocket-sized almanac, the dictionary is exceptional value for money and packed full of factual and interesting material.

      4 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Dates.......2000-04-04

Phenomenal desk resource at work or home. Just the thing to solve those arcane Trivial Pursuit questions or use in Jeopardy. Another fun thing is to surprise friends with (potentially) unknown factoids about what happened on their birth days in other years.

5 out of 5 stars A story behind every name........2004-06-17

This concise, well-researched and entertaining reference is an engaging and informative way to meet the people behind the origins of some of today's most common words and familiar names.
Written in a clear, conversational and often amusing style, it introduces the reader to more than 600 of the lighthearted, silly, fascinating, tragic or unbelievable stories of those who immortalized the names of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Rambo, Vick's Vaporub, M&M chocolate candies, Firestone tires, James Bond and Singer sewing machines, among others. The sources of some well-known eponyms (words derived from people's names) like mausoleum, academics and boycott, are also explained.
The book is divided in two sections, "The Names" and "Shorts," according to the length of the treatment given to each word's history, and the entries are presented in alphabetical order, which makes this book perfect for either browsing or consultation.
To add to your knowledge of name origins, I would recommend also buying the author's second volume in the series, "The Name's Familiar II." Both are excellent, interesting and fun resources you will keep referring to again and again.

          5 out of 5 stars Fabulous read.......1999-12-12

This is one book that is needed on everyones shelf. Truly an entertaining and creative read. Great gift for that hard to buy for person. I was unable to put it down this summer until I realized I was getting a sunburn! Looking forward to a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for classroom use!.......1999-06-09

This book is an excellent source for classrooms, from English to History to Science. The stories of words is fascinating and a part of our culture. Students find the information interesting and they end up learning along the way. Ms. Lee's presentation style keeps the reader engaged, so they want to keep reading. My students end up talking about what they learned from her book, and look forward to my posting the next story each day. I also enjoy the book on my own as a source of entertainment as well as knowledge. Her writing style is fun and she has obviously done her research. I look forward to her next book.

5 out of 5 stars Great summer reading, couldn't put it down........1999-06-07

I met Laura Lee in Michigan when she was doing radio. I knew then that she was going to do great things. She has a great mind for trivia and facts and of course, music. Love her...loved her book. In fact, later I'm ordering 2 more copies.

          5 out of 5 stars A Book For Everyone!!.......1999-06-02

This is truly a book everyone can enjoy. From the opening introduction, to the very last page, this book is a charmer.

It's chocked full of names, stories and origins. It's laid out in easy to follow segments. If you've ever wondered why "hookers" are called that, or how a frisbee came into being, this is the place to find out. There are so many names and subjects, it's impossible for me to do it justice in this mini review. But, the story of Aesop (as in fables) is truly sad, and I'm sure he never imagined how long his name/stories would last.

It is wonderfully entertaining and enlightening to learn the lives behind so many of our everyday words, phrases, household items, and even body parts!!

I plan on taking mine to work tomorrow, to see who all I can "stump" :-) It makes a great ice breaker or conversation maker for that first date or just fun reading with an old mate or friend. Some stories are very lighthearted, while others are tragic, and still others unbelieveable. But, as they say, "truth is stranger than fiction" (somebody says that don't they? :-)
