Not experimental enough imo.......2007-02-18
Some of the brochures were from 2003. Most of them looked like they were from 2003. It's a fairly good source of inspiration (and you'll get a look at the standard brochure design of the past few years), but I think they could've done better.
Basically it just lacks original ideas that could be absorbed into your own creative thinking. It's more like a gallery of what is expected from professional brochure design. So I'd say it's good for brochure professionals with demanding clients, but people like me looking for good, experimental, exploitable ideas should look elsewhere.

The Best of Brochure Design 8 is a collection of creative and contemporary brochure designs from around the world.
The book is divided by categories such as corporate, annual reports, products/services, arts and self-promotional. It offers a varied group of design ideas and examples along with the tools and softwares used for creating those examples.
Graphic designers as well as novices in the field will get a jolt of creativity from the many designs in this book. In my opinion, it makes a great reference guide for anyone in the design field.

A Good Reference.......2002-03-02
Just chock-full of photographed samples of brochures. There are many styles represented, including photographic, illustrative, and typographic. The brochures are for the most part very colorful and creative. It's always nice to have samples to flip through when you're looking for inspiration or a possibile direction to go in with a design you're working on. This book is also useful for showing to your clients, to help get a feel what type of brochure they might be looking for or what styles they are drawn to. I enjoy having this book in my collection.

Good "Brain Food" Book.......2002-03-12
This isn't a "how to" book.. it's a picture book of examples of well designed pieces. It's great to flip through when you need a little inspiration. I find it quite useful - although I was disappointed that most of the work is dated 1996, 97, or 98 - especially for a book that is the best brochure design 2000. Other than that, it is a useful reference book for any designer, but if you're looking for a "How to Design" book, this isn't for you.

Fine and dandy stuff, this sizeable collection has good information, a bright layout and tasteful type, international representation, and the 411 on the stuff they use and how they figured it out... but this is a collection of 1997 designs for a book dated 2001. You can tell.

I have purchased a number in the "Best of" series that Rockport publishes for brochures and logos, and the latest in the brochure series will be a useful addition to any graphic designer's library. Number 5 in the brochure series shows great diversity in types and styles of fairly recent brochures. I find it helpful that Rockport divides the book up into sections that highlight specific types of brochures - i.e. service, institutional, product, etc. - so that I can look for trends within certain categories. A good source for ideas, and a way to see what is happening now in design across the country.

I bought this book to keep for myself, after borrowing a copy from my local library and exhausting my renewal opportunties. It is basically a gallery of highly professional brochure designs, beautifully presented with a strong emphasis on layout. Of particular value, from my perspective, was the inclusion of software used in producing most of the brochure designs. It is an excellent resource for any one interested in graphic art and digital design and a great book to keep for inspiration and frequent reference.

This is an extremely useful design reference for art directors/graphic designers. Although I do have to admit that it isn't as well rounded as I thought it would be. I have to agree with one of the other reviewers about designs that are more organic or traditional being omitted. However, for all those who are need reference for modern and contemporary design for brochures, you need look no further.

Cutting-edge design is not the only design.......2005-02-11
This book features virtually no organic styles or traditional layouts. I felt the designs were very corporate, cold and modern Euro-looking, which I find has limited application for inspiring the type of design work I do (luxury goods branding and design). I did go through the book very thoroughly.
If you're looking for a broad range of styles (traditional and organic styles included) this isn't the book for you.
In general, Wilson Harvey books are great, but usually follow the above pattern.

If you're expecting the equivalent of a text book telling you how to be a graphic designer, you bought the wrong book. And truthfully, I doubt that book exists. This book is the gorgeous and features the best informative graphic design (brochures) in the world. A must-have for every graphic designer.

Got to agree with the others..........2007-01-27
This book is lacking in every way. It may have been amazing in 2002 or 2004 when it was put out, but it is now only good for a class in what NOT to do. Most of the images are pretty boring and tame. I felt that a lot of the images were so obvious and expected - stuff you see everyday. Rockport's 1,000 Graphic Elements: Details for Distinctive Designs was much better. At least it had some inspiring images and cutting-edge work. More 3-D stuff, too.
Skip this book and check out 1,000 Graphic Elements: Details for Distinctive Designs; it's better.
Very bad resource book! Bad as in terrible..........2005-01-18
I'm a design professional and rely on books as resources for insight to the work being produced out there. But when I got this book and opened it, I could hardly find a page or spread that had anything decent on it. This book reminds me of some of the resource books I used in college 8+ years ago. This book's content is very poor quality and very dated material. It's the only book I've ever purchased online and been highly dissappointed about its content. I'd trade this book for a yo-yo at this point. Trust me, DO NOT purchase this book.

This book's content ranges from fair design to absolutely abominable. I'm eighteen and I run circles around most of the designers featured in this book... that's not a good sign. The best design in this book is actually the cover, which can be very decieving... most of the content is flatly uncreative, with all the dullness of a dentist's waiting room. It is, however a good example of what not to do in brochure design: noted mistakes include sloppy collaging (not intentionally sloppy), terrible visual appeal, and the work of designers who went filter-happy in Photoshop (the Emboss filter, no less.) Please avoid this book. Amateurs might enjoy it, but for God's sake, don't emulate the work in it. I realize how arrogant this review may be, but it's hard not to feel that way when your own work puts thiers to shame.

Another great resource book from the "Best of Brochure" series by Rockport. It features approximately 187 pages of high profile pieces from well-known design firms. The individual brochures are shown in a large format, with most being given a page to themselves. There are a variety of styles ranging from non-profit organizations to large corporate clients. A must-have reference book for any designer.

This book could have been much more, it could have given the customers requirement, the methods used or even the thought process of the designer. What you have is a coffee table book, not even brain food, as most of the designs went out in the nineties. The book is too full of itself and makes no attempt to help the reader. Next time I know to avoid Cheryl Cullens books

I totally disagree with the other reviewer. After getting burned on many design purchases, this one is large size (sometimes they look full size and show up small enough to put in your pocket), THICK and FULL of great design. I've been designing professionally for over 10 years and this book has some wonderful work in it. The main reason I buy these is to get some "brain food" and this book is full of it. Better than version 5 and 4 before it. I recommend!
Decieving cover for a bad book.......2001-10-26
This is another one of those brochure books that sport a great cover, only to reveal that the content falls flat.Pretty outdated,and no information regarding the design process and
concepts.The one star is for the excellant but decieving cover.I
will definately think twice before purchasing books by Cheryl Cullen.

This is one of the worst brochure design books I have ever seen. Outdated design and most of them from the United States.More like a marketing tool for Cheryl Dangel Cullen's designer friends.most of the designs dont even show the brochure covers.Another huge disappointment from Cheryl Dangel Cullen(same with Global graphics:colour and Global graphics: symbols, both of which are showcases of wrong information.)I wouldnt even give one star, but that is the bottom of the barrel!

Memories make the book!.......2000-10-22
This book is made awesome by the recollections by its author, Eric Nisenson. To read the excerpts from Nisenson's interactions with Miles gives the book a closeness that is only attainable by personal experiences. The reader is drawn to it, the riveting detail transforms the words into a vivid picture in which the reader sees him/herself in Miles' living- room, hearing that classical rasp of his. Definitely a must read for all those interested in Western music.
An Excellent Book that Any Miles Fan Should Read.......2000-07-17
I really enjoyed this book, and tore through it as fast as I could while still reading it carefully. Author Eric Nisenson is to be commended for the insights he provides into the career and character of Miles Davis. Nisenson covers his entire career and life, from birth to death, even though many periods are summed up too quickly, and I was often left wanting more detail.
That said, if I had not read this "updated edition" of the book, I might not be so full of praise. Nisenson's original version of this biography was released in 1982, and this updated version came out in 1996. Nisenson adds a Preface, and a few chapters to the end of the book. These additions are, to me, the heart of the book. As I said, Nisenson does a fine job covering Miles's career in the body of the book, and the author appears to have a greater understanding of the character and true essence of Miles Davis than anyone else that I've read. This is definitely the story of Miles Davis through the lens of the author's experience, and Nisenson knew Davis personally and understands him well. However, it was the new material that provided the greatest insights for me.
First, in the new Preface, Nisenson writes about the time that he knew Miles Davis, when Miles was in "retirement," and when they were working on this book together (Miles pulled out of the project later because publishers insisted that he help publicize the book, and he was not interested in doing so at the time.). These glimpses into Miles's personal life and character are revealing. Most startling to me was the revelation that Miles Davis had, in Nisenson's words, "beaten and abused women throughout his life." Nisenson laments the fact that, despite the fact that Miles "brutally abused women" was "well known throughout the jazz community," few, if any, jazz critics or biographers, have seen fit to mention it. I give Nisenson a lot of credit for taking himself to task for not addressing the issue in his original edition of "'Round About Midnight." He writes:
"But now, after ther O.J. Simpson affair, I really think it is time to view such activity for what it is--sick and evil. I guess when I wrote this book I still thought of Miles as a friend, but there is really no excuse. It amazes me how people like Miles can scream about the evils of racism--rightly so--and then continually abuse women. What utter hypocrisy."
Bravo, Mr. Nisenson. It does not serve anyone well to deify this musical genius without remembering the "sick and evil" parts of his character.
Nisenson also adds a couple of chapters to the end of the book. These were extremely revealing to me. In the chapter called "Phoenix," Nisenson provides great insight into the post-"retirement" phase of Miles's career, the utter absurdity and banality of which has always perplexed me. The final chapter, before a useful abridged discography, addresses the question "who was Miles Davis" and debunks and deconstructs the oft-repeated myth that he "changed music four or five times."
The reason for the lack of a fifth star in my rating is due to a two flaws in the book: One, it lacks detail too much of the time and sums things up to quickly. This book should be about twice as long as it is. And two, there are some mistakes in the not-detailed-enough documentation of Miles's recording sessions.
Despite these flaws, I strongly recommend the purchase of this book.
Not just another Miles biography.......2000-05-28
If you want the ultimate Miles biography, get the Jack Chambers one. This book, at 300 pages, is sketchy in comparison. It is almost criminally negligent about Miles' music of the 60's and 70's.
What makes it worth reading, however, is Mr. Nisenson's personal memoirs. The preface is called "Hangin' Out with Daffy Davis". In it, he tells how he went from idolizing Miles when he was a teenager to a situation where his phone would ring late at night and he would groan, "Oh no, it's that damned Miles again!" We've all heard that Miles wasn't a saint; this edition of Nisenson's portrait confirms it.
Despite my earlier comments, Nisenson is an excellent author and "'Round About Midnight" is a very enjoyable read. So if you buy all good books on Miles or you'd like to hear something a little different about him, get it. (After you read it, by the way, think about the fact that this guy did not rate one mention in Miles' autobiography.) If you want only one Miles bio, however, it's got to be the Jack Chambers or the Ian Carr one.

I Never get tired of Reading about Miles Davis.and this Book is Very well done.Eric Nisenson does a Fantastic Job Here Detailing The Life&Times of The Man.all of his Musical Heroes&Those He Inspired which were many.Miles Davis is one of the Greatest Teachers of Music that the Music World has ever Heard.&Also Very Black&Proud.Miles was A Brother He Never Sold-Out&was His Own Man.
