Hit of the birthday!.......2007-09-07
My son became "addicted" to the Bone series about a year and a half ago. I've never been a fan of comics but when my non-reader decided these books were what he wanted to read I was on a quest. He started by reading the color re-releases of the first few books and when Old Man's Cave had not come out yet I bought him the all-in-one book with 1000+ pages. My non-reader finished it in a short amount of time and was left with wanting more. When I came across "The Art of Bone" I was thrilled. It talked about how Jeff Smith created the characters when he was 9 years old. My son turned 9 last month so I got it for his birthday. As he was going to bed and talking about the day (which included 9 friends and The Reptile Guy) he said his favorite part was receiving "The Art of Bone"! THAT made MY day! It is a beautiful book and is very informative. I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in this series, beautiful comic book art or looking for inspiration.
ONE OF THE GREAT COMICS OF THE LAST 25 YEARS.......2007-09-03
Jeff Smith truly has lived the American Dream...he found one thing he liked to do and he's done it for his entire life. OK, that may be simplifying things a bit. But even as a child, Smith knew he wanted to be a cartoonist. In fact, inside this fantastic book you'll get to see one of the very first Bone comics, drawn by Smith when he was just ten years old. The characters had yet to be refined in terms of their look and personalities, but the spirit is still there. Bone is really one of the great comics and one of the great comics success stories of the modern era. A wacky and wise-cracking strip that is one part Walt Kelly, one part J.R.R. Tolkien, and the rest all Smith. Smith took a chance on his creations, and self-published them. While most self-publishers fail quite quickly, Smith proved that talent rises to the top. Bone soon became a cult-hit on the part of Cerebus the Aardvark.
This volume from Dark Horse Books is chock full of 200 pages of rare Jeff Smith Bone art. Some of it unpublished, some of it pencil versions, alternate covers, etc. You get a little bit of everything in this book: Finished panel pages, completed, full color covers, unfinished panel sequences, rare sketches, pencil versions of completed covers, often side-by-side with the finished product, and so much more. The editors are along to provide captions to the art at the bottom of the page, often noting Smith's influences such as the valley scene from Bone #1 and its comparison to a similar scene from one of Joe Kubert's Tarzan pages. Not that it is a copy of the Kubert scene, but rather how smith uses perspective in the scene, dwarfing the characters by the sheer expanse of the area that Bone is looking over.
The book also reprints perhaps the seminal page in Bone's history. Bone is being chased by two of the fearsome Rat creatures that are ever after him. He leaps to a tiny branch thinking he is safe as the two large predators could not possibly fit on the same branch, and would be stupid to try. When they are both on the branch, Bone screams the immortal words, "Stupid, Stupid Rat Creatures!" This phrase has even been included in Random House's Cyberspeak dictionary.
The book introduces the reader to all of the main characters including Fone Bone (the star), scheming Phoney Bone, dim-witted Smiley Bone, Thorn (bone's human love interest), Gran'ma Ben, and Lucius who runs the local tavern. With heroes you need villains and we can't leave them out...they include The Lord of the Locusts, The Hooded One, and Kingdok, who rules the Rat Creatures.
Bone is so rich in its story and scope that it really humbles comics that have been put out by the "larger companies". Even if you haven't read the comics you're sure to be dazzled by the art in this book. Smith is without a doubt one of the best cartoonists and best storytellers of the past twenty years. And if you are a Bone fan then the book will provide a lot of interesting anecdotes to many of the stories that you've enjoyed over the years. The good thing is that even though the series ended in 2004, Scholastic Books is reprinting the series in collected editions and in full color. This book gets my highest possible rating. Get it...NOW!

Touching Portrait Of A Master Cartoonist's Fine Work........2007-08-24
(from an extended article, copyright 2007 Michael F. Hopkins)
For those who have come to treasure the Sequential masterpiece known
as BONE, this coffee-table volume will be an extra-special treat. For those who have never heard of the phenomenal epic which established storyteller Jeff Smith as a prime mover in the fields of Comics and Children's Literature, THE ART OF BONE will serve as an eye-popping introduction to one of the finest authors in any field.
The latest hardcover project from Dark Horse Comics, THE ART OF
BONE is a feast of information. Detailing why and how Smith became
a cartoonist, the book showcases his interest from schooldays to professional practice decades later.
Rich in Smith's probing, versatile illustrations, the volume
pinpoints the essential and unique balancing act which the
Sequential author must play between narrative and visualizing.
In an era where too many throw all their logs on one fire,
showboating without focus or meaning, the success of a skillful talespinner with much to say and share with all is as refreshing
as it is encouraging.
A stirring, insightful whimsy worthy of Walt Kelly (Pogo) and
Charles Schulz (Peanuts) is complemented by reflective pathos and
intense character interplay that Will Eisner (Sundiata, The Spirit)
could take great pride in.
In Jeff Smith's aesthetic, a tale can cross all boundaries, whether through animated cunning or larger-than-life Fantasy, and bring its points effectively home.
Whether lost in the wilderness, or deep in the throes of a life-shaping
quest, the imperative of journey informs the heart Smith's work. THE
ART OF BONE is a delightful look into the way of that path, and how much fun using one's head can be.
Very uplifting, in fact, for the heart and soul.
Give it a read.
Give it several.
A Wonderful Assembly Some of the Best Comic Art.......2007-07-25
Bone was one of those seminal works that changed a medium, and like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars it built a full and wonderful world. That it was serialized over a ten-year span only strengthened its audience's attachment to and fondness of the characters.
Although his storytelling, pacing (both dramatic and comedic), and world-building are among the best ever exhibited in comics, it is for Jeff Smith's art that most Bone fans truly drool. Although it's somewhat trite to throw comparisons to Walt Kelly around when discussing Smith's opus, it is nonetheless appropriate; not since Pogo has there been such gorgeous line quality, such playful mastery of black and white form. His characters, as simple as they are, only serve to demonstrate what a master of movement and emotion Smith really is, and his humans, animals, and environments belay his keen eye for capturing the real world.
This book is the ultimate companion for anyone who loves Smith's art. From a surprisingly good Bone comic drawn at age ten through the "Thorn" comic strip drawn for his college paper to the comics to the coloring of the Scholastic editions, the book follows the Bone saga artistically as it develops, throwing in side stories previously collected only in the long out-of-print "Bone Reader" and other wonderful asides - a cartoon tribute to Walt Kelly, etc.
Smith's artwork is perhaps THE best comic art from the 1990s, and it deserves this lovingly assembled edition.

An excellent resource for Halloween parties for children........2007-02-16
This is the perfect book for a Halloween party for children. It gives you step-by-step instructions on how to go start with a stick figure and then add to the image until a passable skeleton is created. The instructions are easy to follow, well within the skill set of young children. There is a short historical section on the appearance of skeletons in artwork and a set of other simple projects that can be done with skeletons. It is an excellent resource for teachers and scout leaders.

Book Description
The works on paper collected here, mostly in color, span the entire career of Wyndham Lewis, through Vorticism and beyond. Many drawings are from private collections and have never been displayed or published before. The drawings reveal many aspects of this complex and various figure, a fixed star in the constellation of British culture from the 1910s to the 1950s--friend and portraitist of James Joyce and T. S. Eliot--not only for his art but also for his writing.
A notable group of these drawings represents his wife, Froanna; another documents experiences in Morocco; all show Lewis's continuing and unique exploration of a forceful, modern style, especially after the First World War. Included, too, are drawings from Lewis's time in the United States and Canada.
Book Description
For over a decade, Hal Hartley's deadpan comedies and explorations of unlikely relationships of love and trust have been favorites with critics and indie film crowds alike. Gathered here in one volume for the first time are the screenplays for three of his most acclaimed films: The Unbelievable Truth, in which a young man returns home after serving time for murder; Trust, which follows a pregnant teen and the effect of her condition on her family; and Simple Men -- the film that first brought him widespread prominence -- in which two brothers go in search of their anarchist father.

The Unbelievable Truth!.......2003-06-14
Concise and intelligent guide to one of America's most consistently entertaining and illuminating contemporary directors. Giving equal focus to Hartley's features and shorts - a format the director holds in high regard for offering the potential to experiment and freedom from the tyranny of narrative convention - the author competently highlights Hartley's recurring formal and thematic preoccupations. Some of the thoughts on the individual titles are a little subjective and a mistake occurs in reference to the name of a central character in Henry Fool, bit overall this is a strong introduction to Hartley's work.

WHAT AN UNEXPECTED GEM.......2005-03-05
How come I have never heard of this film? I found it by accident and it is amazing. It's smart, unexpected, ironic, sweet and dark. This film is an example of storytelling at it's best and puts big budget blockbusters with no real heart to shame. It is about friendship, the written word, family and small town life all mixed up in one little dysfunctional package. Watch it and be ready for anything. I loved this movie.
Dominates AMERICAN BEUATY and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.......2000-08-27
This is going to be one of the most underrated, underwatched films of the decade. Why does a award winning script (Cannes) go unnoticed shortly after its nomination and acceptence? Based on Harold Bloom's ANXIETY OF INFLUENCE, this dark comedy inspires and uplifts while the tongue stays in the cheek. Literary influcences include Goethe's FAUST and James Joyce's relationship with Samuel Beckett (the latter was the secretary for the former for a short while). I cannot say enough for this film. By and far the most power film, if not a contender for most power piece of literature this decade and of (gulp) this century. Get ready for gut wrentching catharsis set on 11! Highly recommended.
Book Description
As they have the previous three holiday seasons, Fantagraphics are offering a boxed set collecting the current (1965-66) and previous (1963-64) volumes, in a new slipcase designed by the award-winning graphic novelist, Seth. It's the perfect gift book item of the season!
In The Complete Peanuts 1963-64: this volume is particularly rich in never-before-reprinted strips: Over 150 (more than one fifth of the book!) have never seen the light of day since their original appearance over 40 years ago, so this will be a trove of undiscovered treasures even for avid Peanuts collectors. These "lost" strips include Linus making a near-successful run for class president that is ultimately derailed by his religious beliefs (two words: "great" and "pumpkin"), and Snoopy getting involved with a group of politically fanatical birds. One wonders: Was it the political edge in these stories that got them consigned to oblivion for so long? Also worthy of note is an extended, never-reprinted sequence in which Snoopy gets ill and heads to the veterinarian hospital...Also in this volume: Lucy's attempts at improving her friends branches out from her increasingly well-visited nickel psychiatry booth to an educational slideshow of Charlie Brown's faults (it's so long there's an intermission!). Also, Snoopy's doghouse begins its conceptual expansion, as Schulz reveals that the dog owns a Van Gogh, and that the ceiling is so huge that Linus can paint a vast (and as it turns out unappreciated) "history of civilization" mural on it.
And baseball continues to be a mainstay: Charlie Brown suffers from pitcher's elbow and is replaced by Linus, who turns out to be a vast improvement; he also blows several more crucial matches through various screw-ups (one with the little red haired girl in attendance); and adding insult to injury, his favorite baseball player is demoted to the minor league. The Complete Peanuts 1963-64 features a new introduction by animator Bill Melendez, producer of over 75 Peanuts animated specials and movies, including the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas.
In The Complete Peanuts 1965-66: We are now in the mid-1960s, one of Schulz's peak periods of creativity (and one third of the way through the strip's life!). Snoopy has become the strip's dominant personality, and this volume marks two milestones for the character: the first of many "dogfights" with the nefarious Red Baron, and the launch of his writing career ("It was a dark and stormy night..."). Two new charactersthe first two from outside the strip's regular little neighborhoodmake their bows. Roy (who befriends Charlie Brown and then Linus at summer camp) won't have a lasting impact, but upon his return from camp he regales a friend of his with tales of the strange kids he met, and she has to go check them out for herself. Her name? Peppermint Patty. The Complete Peanuts 1965-66 features a new introduction by Hal Hartley, writer/director of acclaimed independent films Trust, Henry Fool, Kimono, Simple Men, The Unbelievable Truth, and Fay Grim.

Peanuts 1963-1966.......2007-10-17
The cartoons of Charles Schulz are always a pleasure to read and especially these collections of his earlier work.
Overall Review.......2007-10-01
A great package of Peanuts comics as we look to the following years. Sparky has through the 1960's changed the look of the Peanuts characters compared to the 1950's. These are the years that I like, seeing that I was born in 1965.
The actual collection, in a boxed set of 2 books,is a good idea. Collectors like myself buy the individual books in the Peanuts collection to read, and then keep the boxed sets on shelf to be admired.
About the whole series of "The Complete Peanuts" books.......2007-09-24
If you've not seen any of the books from this series and aren't sure about getting them, here's my advice: if you're a fan of the Peanuts comis strips, these books will become treasures to you -- buy them. They are absolutely beautifully made volumes (indeed, there is a certain whimsical, understated elegance about their presentation), and the reproductions of the strips are perfect. The first 4 volumes were a Christmas surprise for me a couple of years ago from my grandmother, and the latest volumes (I believe usually 2 per year) are now the Christmas presents I look forward to most. They are a true joy, and well more than worth the money. There's no need to comment on the strips themselves: they're the wonderful cartoons you remember (plus a whole bunch you may never have seen). For me, one of the greatest delights is being able to read the strips in the order in which they were first published, so as to contextualise them both within the narratives of the strips as a group and within their historical context (since, in the corner of each strip, is the day & month when it originally appeared).
These books are amongst my prized possessions, and will be from now on. I can't recommend them highly enough, and thank the publisher for putting such love and attention into their creation. And, of course (and most of all) thanks to good ol' Charles Schulz for writing them! The Complete Peanuts 1963-1966 Box SetThe Complete Peanuts 1959-1962 Box SetThe Complete Peanuts 1950-1954 Boxed Set

a truly independent & original voice.......2001-03-22
Like many of the best movies, Hal Hartley's films exist in a world that is both recognizably realistic and ever so slightly beyond belief. In contrast to many of his previous works, which tend to be set near Manhattan and/or Long Island, Flirt has a global scope, and it's fascinating to see how Hartley's style meshes with other cultural settings.
Indeed that is a large part of the point of "Flirt," which is trio of shorter pieces (taking place in New York, Germany and Japan respectively) which all tell essentially the same story of someone who flirts with everyone and everything, including committment. Although it is not a substitue fo rthe film itself, the screenplay allows one to take a step back and appreciate the subtleties of Hartley's approaches to each rendition. Though character genders and relationships may shift from location to location, what "Flirt" does with these compelling variations on a common theme is nothing less than find a way to reveal our common humanity across the world.
Obviously it's debatable if that's exactly what Hal Hartley intended when he wrote these words, but that serves to make the achievement more rather than less magnificent. At a time when most movies seem to be about less and less, Hartley is willing to make films about more and more. He is willing to stumble a bit (as in the third part of this trio), but at the end of the day, he remains a powerful voice for people who do not exist in black and white but rather in beautiful shades of gray.

Two of my favorite films + a smart interview.......2001-11-08
I never get tired of either reading or seeing either of these films. For the Hal Hartley fan, this is really an essential volume to own-- these screenplays are one of those rarest of rare things, screenplays that have their own life as written word-- worth reading just for their own sake. The interview Graham Fuller does with Hartley and Martin Donovan is worth the price of the book by itself. Also includes a filmography up to and including _Simple Men_.
No true fan should be without this book........2000-05-31
"Trust" was so different from anything I'd ever seen that it just knocked me out--the dialog, the meter, the slightly-affected hyper-reality of the performances. "Simple Men" showcased a refinement of writer/director Hal Hartley's style, and I found myself watching rapt, not wanting it to end, ever. Untouched, unblemished, unstained by Hollywood, Hal Hartley makes his own movies his own way. He takes life's "little problems," that big Hollywood movies only mention in passing as a cinematic trick to achieve emotional buy-in, and examines them in exquisite detail.
"Simple Men and Trust" is a treat, not only because Hartley's words are there in black and white, standing alone and naked--but standing nonetheless--on the page, but because Graham Fuller's interview with Hartley (and actor Martin Donovan) offers us a look at the man, the mind, behind the words.
Opps! I've gone and read it again........1998-12-04
Harltey's genuis is here again, he takes simple people, in a simple situation and comes up with a tale that keeps you glued to the TV or the text. Everthing is underplayed, the sensbilites involved are almost English, with their reserve and distance. Again the outsiders take the mantle of the main roles, and the settings are what hal does best his homtown. The book imortalises the lines so wonderfully articulated by the actors, but this is a play as much as it is a screen play and deserves to be put in text.
