Book Description
Two years ago author and horse trainer Linda Kohanov wrote The Tao of Equus — a daring multidisciplinary exploration of the powerful spiritual, emotional, and psychological connections between people and horses. Its provocative narrative, blending her story of prescient dreams and ancestral communication with a wide-ranging exploration of equine-facilitated therapy practices, created a worldwide demand for her workshops and lectures. She also received more than 1,000 letters from readers around the world describing their own strange and wonderful experiences with horses. In Riding Between the Worlds, Kohanov continues sharing the story of her own journey of healing and transformation and further develops the ideas introduced in The Tao of Equus, bolstering her groundbreaking theories with anecdotal evidence. Where her previous book laid the theoretical groundwork for expanding our emotional, mental, and spiritual view of horses, Riding Between the Worlds concentrates on the extraordinary stories that support this view.

Who's the audience for this book?.......2007-10-17
I bought this book simply because Amazon advertised it to me and it had good reviews. It obviously makes a connection to certain type of people (presumably "extreme sensitives") but it didn't do much for me. I found it hard to work out who the author was actually writing for. She didn't provide insights to assist troubled people, so clearly you have to actually attend her therapy program to benefit from her knowledge. Nor did she detail what she does in her therapy with horses, so you are left wondering exactly what is happening in the round yard. I suppose if you are on the inside (ie part of the horse-assisted therapy community) this book will mean more to you than it did to me. I tried to have an open mind but sorry, I ended the book not feeling at all convinced that horses are somehow in tune with the real meaning of life just like yogis.
Riding Between Worlds.......2007-10-09
Though overall this book is too "new age" for my taste, I believe Ms. Kohanov probably does a tremendous amount of good pairing horses with people and solving inner or repressed emotional conflicts at her ranch in Tucson, and in the clinics she presents. I found the examples she sited very believable for both horse and person, and truly believe horses can heal emotional wounds. I very much agree "it is never JUST a horse!" Horses reveal our deepest secrets and conflicts, they sense these before we even can give them words. I liked, and I promptly employed, the technique of telling my horses things about my life that I believe make me similar to each one. The horse always listens, and the verbalization is good for both. This book adds understanding to our relationship with horses by making the reader more aware of what the horse "knows" or senses immediately about us, and thus makes us more open to the horse.
A Ride You Won't Forget.......2007-09-18
When I saw the beautiful cover of this book, and the intriguing title, I couldn't wait to read it. It promised mysteries and a wild ride into the unknown. Actually, the riding is transformative. The author overcomes a destructive marriage to find her way back to life through her interactions with some very wonderful, talented, compassionate and truly honest animals. A lifetime of fascination with, and interaction with horses leads her into an astonishing field of work, using members of her herd as therapy animals, in the treatment of trauma victims and people with emotional problems.
There is so much to this book that resonates, for anyone who has ever ridden a horse, or wanted to, or just enjoys watching them. Some of the stories are just inspirational. There is a wonderful section in which her beloved mare, Rasa, prematurely foals, and a community of helpers keep the young horse warm with body heat and take turns milking his dam so he can nurse. What a fantastic story.
Some of the horses are stories themselves. There's Noche, the abused horse, who is tender and kind with abuse victims. There is Merlin, a disturbed stallion, who finds love. There is Rasa, a powerful empath and spiritual guide.
I kept waiting for the book to turn New Age-y, but it's not preachy at all. This is one woman's journey that touches and heals. I won't look at horses the same way again.
Better than her first book.......2007-01-11
Linda's second book is easier to read and has more examples of horse-human interaction. I have recommended it even to my non-horsey friends. It has definitely changed my own approach to my equine friends.
A very important book for anyone who loves horses. Empath energy........2007-01-06
This book changed how I relate to my horse, even after a lifetime of being around horses. One of the best horse books I've ever read, yet it goes far beyond just relating to horses. Give this book to all your best friends.

Book Description
Roma are the largest minority group in Europe and are the major poverty risk group in Central and Eastern Europe. Poverty rates from recent World Bank poverty studies are striking. In Bulgaria, Roma were found to be ten times more likely to be poor than ethnic Bulgarians. Roma also comprise an increasing share of the population in ECA countries, because of higher birth rates. These dynamics have gained international attention, and the European Union accession process, in particular, has focused attention on the issue. Governments and international institutions have been eager to support initiatives to address the needs of Roma. However, the lack of credible information on the actual living conditions of Roma and the absence of program evaluations have provided substantial obstacles.
This book brings together original sociological research, evaluations of programs, and the first comparative cross-country household survey on ethnicity and poverty. It finds that Roma poverty is multi-faceted and can only be addressed by a comprehensive policy approach that attends to all dimensions of Roma social exclusion. It proposes an inclusive policy approach which would expand and promote Roma involvement and participation in mainstream society, while maintaining cultural and social identity and autonomy. Policy mechanisms include those which make existing policies more accessible to Roma and identifying areas where targeted initiatives are needed.

Brigham Young--American Moses, Maker of Mormonism?.......2005-12-26
"Brigham Young and the Expanding American Frontier" is a fine, brief biographical study of the Mormon leader who succeeded in taking leadership of the single largest faction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following the death of founder Joseph Smith Jr. in 1844. Written by one of my close personal friends, so I am not an unbiased reviewer, this book captures well in the relatively short text the life of this remarkable leader who took his followers to the Great Basin, created a theocratic society on the western frontier, and established Mormonism as a major homegrown North American religion. Newell G. Bringhurst is professor of history at the College of the Sequoias in California, and the author of several important books and articles on the history of Mormonism.
He gives full credit to Brigham Young's genius and creativity as a religious leader, and to his commitment to what Young viewed as the core teachings of Joseph Smith. After a discussion of Young's birth and early history, Bringhurst traces his career from his conversion to Mormonism, his experience in the travails of the church's early history, his call as an Apostle in 1835, his mission to England, the assassination of Joseph Smith and his succession to president of the church, the westward exodus to Utah, the creation of a theocratic empire in the Rockies, controversies with the federal government, and his eventual death in 1877.
In several areas Bringhurst offers suggestive explanations of important aspects of Young's life. For example, Young embraced plural marriage in the 1840s as a religious tenet of Mormonism, despite its controversial nature within the U.S. and his personal difficulties with several of his wives. Bringhurst notes suggestively that plural marriage might be explained as a collective mid-life crisis of Mormon officials in the 1840s. He asks, could the religious connotations associated with it have been way to legitimize lascivious behavior? "Perhaps polygamy," Bringhurst speculates, "was the product of a so-called `middle-age crisis' that Smith, along with other Mormon leaders, experience by the late 1830s and early 1840s. The taking of plural wives, particularly young, attractive ones, represented an effort to recapture youthful vigor and vitality" (p. 54). Of course, such a suggestion requires considerably more research before being advanced as a legitimate theory, but it is certainly something worth exploring. Bringhurst's short biography of Brigham Young is laced with such intriguing observations.
"Brigham Young and the Expanding American Frontier" is not the last word on the history of Young, but it is a very fine synthesis of what we understand about this critically important nineteenth century American. Criticisms of Bringhurst's book that it fails to take to task the "absurd foundation" of Mormonism is both unfair and unfounded. It is a worthwhile short biography of Brigham Young, an accessible history of the Mormon Church in its formative era, and a model of historical writing for a broad audience. One can go further with any number of other works, and after reading this one I suggest moving on to the much more detailed biography by Leonard J. Arrington, "Brigham Young: American Moses" (hardcover from Alfred A. Knopf, 1985;, paperback from University of Illinois Press, 1986).
Leaves out much.......2005-07-29
While the premise of this book is to use BY to show how the American west expanded, it is deeply flawed by being largely uncritical of the absurd foundations of the Mormon "church". The author lays out what Joseph Smith made up out of whole cloth and called a religion, but then does not go in depth about how preposterous it is, and never really gets into why BY bought into the whole fraud.

Step-by-step guide that is a GREAT reference!.......2004-01-13
I am currently a Ph.D. student and have had a number of upper-level stat courses. I first received this book toward the end of the required stat courses (Multivariate Methods)...boy, do I wish I had it sooner. Everything is laid out in concise format, it is easy to read, and the material is relevant. Plus, there are also sample APA results sections in each portion. It is a great resource that any grad student should purchase! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Your personalized statistics, SPSS, and APA tutor!.......2003-09-05
I first used this book in grad school where I actually took a class from Sam Green. I have been keeping it handy ever since. Every chapter explains the statistical test (purpose, background), gives a couple of applied examples, then takes you through SPSS step by step (what options to click on, etc.), shows you the results and how to interpret each based on the example given at the beginning, and then shows you how to write it all up in APA style (what to italicize, where to put spaces, etc., plus how to express it in words). It is the most useful and practical and easy to understand stats book (or stats teacher) I ever encountered. I highly recommend it to everyone, grad students, researchers, academics.
Analyzing and Understanding Data.......2003-06-27
A more appropriate name for the book would be "Analyzing and Understanding Data Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh" to underscore the book's usefulness when one is analyzing data and wants explanations of the statistical procedures. This book is not only helpful to those who conduct quantitative research, but also helpful to students enrolled in applied statistics courses, in general research methods, and any course that involve the analysis of quantitative data. The book is very useful because the authors provide many chapters (i.e., lessons) with research examples of applicability, brief explanations of statistical procedures, discussions of underlying assumptions, step-by-step instructions using research examples (with data), descriptions of interpreting the illustrated SPSS output, and reporting the written or table results in APA style.

Good manual.......2007-09-28
Using SPSS is a good manual to navigate you through using SPSS. It is idiot-proof to follow if you just do what it says. Time-consuming to read the whole thing but good for picking out specific functions to learn. Would recommend this book. Includes a CD with data sets to use while following along with the reading.
Spss book.......2007-01-20
Receive book in excellant condition. I am using it in class now. Thanks.
A waste of money.......2007-01-09
This book basically goes through what the options are under file, edit, view, etc. The help menu in the program would suffice for this. It also does not go through enough examples of when you would use the options.
Amazingly Helpful Text.......2007-01-06
I have been struggling with learning SPSS using a text recommended by a professor. I was given the suggestion to try this by another colleague. I found the detailed information to be just what I needed. I would recommend it to others!
Very Useful / Practical - Not Intended to be a Theory Book.......2006-02-24
As an ABD graduate student, I have found this book to be very useful to me. It is the best book I have seen for just taking you through the procedures of using SPSS. Most stats books are only theory leaving you to your lab mates to learn how to actually do anything, but this book for the most part solved that problem for me. Very parcemonous and down to earth.
