This is the first book to bring together the work of a modern motion picture film laboratory together with the specialist techniques for preservation and restoration of archival film.
The books data has its origins in a training programme called FILM which was written by members of the Gamma Group with funding from the EU fund Force. The committee comprised senior film archivists and technicians in charge of film conservation departments or working film laboratories within national film archives, together with technicians from commercial laboratories which specialise in archival film conservation and who do not work for national and local archives. The final group consisted of many of the most experienced individuals in their fields.
Restoration of Motion Picture Film is an extremely informative, well-researched book which is an unmissable addition to the bookshelves of conservators, archivists and curators worldwide. Film history and film conservation students will also find it of great interest and use.

This book covers in detail the film restoration process. It starts out with information about film, its history and development and how we perceive light and motion. It then goes into the technical processes and into the ethical concerns that arise in doing a restoration project. One of the few books to cover the subject. This book is pricy, but thorough. At times it gets rather technical but overall I learned a lot about film as a medium and the considerations that any film-maker (especially the ones producing only digitally) should consider. It is written in a short section bullet-point format. This localizes the concepts and discussions in concise areas which helps the reader - when the going gets too technical you can skip easily to the next bullet. The books has a section on techniques and case studies too, as well as a comprehensive glossary. Overall I found this to be a meticulous work on the subject. I'm giving it a generous 5/5 stars, mainly because it is one of the only books on the subject, and it does it very well.

It's a non-technical look (well, as non-technical as you can get on a topic as complicated as restoring films) at the world of film preservation and restoration, tracing its short history (films weren't always deemed important enough to save), focusing on some of the key personalities, key films and key organizations. Film buff's will love it.
There are some very interesting and surprising anecdotes concerning the restoration of some of our favorite films: the restoration of the "snails and oysters" scene in SPARTACUS, needed to be re-recorded since the original dialogue track was lost. Tony Curtis recorded his lines in Los Angeles, while Anthony Hopkins recorded the late Lawrence Olivier's lines in London! Stanley Kubrick re-directed the scene by fax! The actions that had to be taken to restore the soundtrack of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA are even more fascinating.
A perfect book for those fascinated with both archaeology and film!

Our Movie Heritage is one of the best books I've ever read and I can't say enough good things about it. If you have any intrest in movies, this book is a must. Our Movie Heritage contains many beautiful pictures and is very well written. It was so wonderful and informative, I couldn't put it down. The facts about preservation are so alarming and worrying, it makes you feel like you should give all your money to the cause. If the authors read this sort of thing, I just want to say thank you. You have changed my life. I'm in high school and after reading this book, I know what career I'm going into, film preservation. So thank you, and everyone needs to buy this book, its worth the price and much much more.

Rudy and Barbara Franchi have created, in my mind, the most definitive primer to date that deserves a place in the PERMANENT library of EVERY movie poster or memorabilia fan in the world.

Part Hollywood part Sherlock Holmes Story.......2007-08-12
What an amazing story of how the pieces of this edited masterpiece were found during a painstaking search. The story of the production of the film is riveting, but even more so is the tale of the search for the lost footage. At the end it is slightly disappointing that all of the missing pieces could not be found, but ultimately the book is a celebration because the majority of it was discovered, and in the process, the restoration of this movie served as a catalyst for many films thereafter. Well written and hard to put down once started.

Not every movie deserves a book of this quality but the movie and the book are perfect matches. What a wonderful read and I highly recommend this book to any fan of the movie, Hollywood, or student of same. Very well done.

A wonderful study in how to "uncover" a masterpiece!.......1999-03-22
A great book by Mr. Haver, filled with facts on the making of "A Star Is Born", the masterpiece. It also shows that rumors have been wrong for many years,in blaming the high cost of filming on Ms. Garland and also why this masterpiece ended up being a disappointment at the box office, having been cut up by Warner's to appease the movie houses' demands for a shorter version so it could be run for more viewings. A shame, when you consider they would have made more if audiences had been allowed to see it in its entirety, as planned. However, we have this wonderful book to tell us and show us exactly what took place! Thank you again, Mr. Haver!

From the supplier: 'Vertigo,' created in 1958 by Alfred Hitchcock has been reconstructed by Robert A. Harris and James C. Katz to improve its reissue. The process of restoration which began in 1995 was undertaken so that scholars and students of cinema as well as people who wanted to watch the film can avail of it in its near original state. The result of the restoration completed in 1997 was a 70mm Vista Vision print. Also, the film is now available on VHS and on laserdisc in its 'Signature Collection'.

The author has done a marvellous job in presenting the fundamentals of economics. The author explains the material in a clear and concise manner and uses real-world examples to further enhance the understanding of the reader. Problem sets presented at the end of each chapter are exhaustive and rigorous.

I just loved the way each chapter started with a scenario from the history archives of actual firms that narrated a story which was directly linked to the contents of the chapter. Out of all the books that i read for my MBA, this book has been one of the better Management books, which i enjoyed reading. Besides being a well organized and example-packed textbook, I found Managerial Economics and Organizational Architecture to be a compact MBA refresher course -- and a useful reference for day-to-day problems. Thinking about business organizations as rational individuals responding to incentives and new information simply fits the facts. Microeconomics without math.......2007-04-24
This is a fantastic book and an easy read. It bridges the gap between any basic principles of economics course and a more advanced micro theory text. A lot of the math its shed off, so if you are looking for hard core formulas...it might be a good idea to read something else or read this in combination with a more mathematically oriented book. Some chapters are engaging (like the one on the importance of Altruism) and overall the author delivers well written microeconomics reading.
Judgment, Choice and Rationality.......2004-05-03
As of late, microeconomic and macroeconomic theory has been incorporating social, psychological and social-psychological theory and concepts into the fold. This makes sense, for the quantification sans-psychology (social psychology) of analysis has been poor.
This author is well-versed in this area and articulates well the concepts which are important. However, as my colleagues have stated, the book does leave much to be desired in the mathematical-sense.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Judgment, Choice and Rationality (defined).
This book should be included in undergraduate curriculum.
Five stars because it accomplishes what it was designed for (non-mathematical approach to microeconomics).

A must for who is genuinely interested in UNDERSTANDING and ENJOY the basis of neo-classical theory. Better than any other other book!
Mathematical--no. Fascinating--yes!.......2001-05-04
It's rare to find a text as enjoyable to read as Frank's in any subject, let alone microeconomics. The reader looking for the standard calculus-based, mathematical approach to micro should look elsewhere (Jehle and Reny is a great place to start). That's simply not the point of this text--the point is to provide the insight behind the models, as well as to promote critical thinking about the shortcomings of the traditional assumptions economists make. This text, combined with Jehle and Reny if one desires rigor as well, provides FAR more than any other single or multiple text combination available.
where's the math?.......2001-03-07
I'm studying out of this book for my intermediate micro course. Simply put, the text is good (but unremarkable) for what it is: a no-nonsense bridge between the usual undergraduate principles course and graduate course in microeconomic theory. However, I can't help but feel that Frank skims off too much math in the name of accessibility. This won't help the reader looking to go further in the subject, i.e., grad or b-school. This would be okay if the appendices packed the math, but this isn't the case: the appendices are on-line at the publisher's web site, which pretty much means if you want to follow the math, you need to be near a computer. A somewhat "mathier" text, that I highly recommend, is the latest edition of Varian's Intermediate Microeconomics.
