Book Description
This stunningly lavish volume is based on Pauline van Lynden's notebooks, photographs and other material gathered over fifteen years of wanderings in Rajasthan, India. The book begins with Pauline's first overwhelming impressions of color, people and places. In search of material, making friends on her way, she discovers the Rajasthani cities, is invited to a royal wedding and finds artisans devoted to their centuries-old crafts. After some time, a longing for quiet draws her to the countryside, and the second half of the book focuses on the villages and a rhythm of life which has not changed much over the centuries. The fourteen chapters of the book are each introduced by two pages of stories and descriptions by Pauline to explain, in a personal way, the following pages of photographs. The text is limited to her impressions, as the book is meant to be essentially a visual experience. With her artistic background, an upbringing in international surroundings, a curious and eclectic mind, a keen photographer's eye and a great sensitivity for detail and atmosphere, Pauline is perfectly equipped to bring her own view of Rajasthan to the public in this informed and evocative manner.

Gorgeous!.......2007-04-05
When I was the in-house stylist for Style Guide I had this incredibly beautiful Indian girl with dark eyes for an intern. She wore the brightest colors to work everyday and spoke in this rich lilting voice. One day I finally asked her where she got it - "the clothes or the accent?" she asked, "Both", said I. Well, she said, the colors are from my mother's land and the accent is from my father's land. Turns out that my pretty intern's mom came from the desert state of Rajasthan, in the North Western part of India. I have since then browsed innumerable coffee table books on Rajasthan, but Pauline Van Lynden's Rajasthan is certainly a notch above the rest. The photographs are lavish, the details touching, the effect spellbinding. Royals, artisans, dressmakers, housewives - Van Lynden gives us a breathtaking glimpse into these myriad lives.
Another plus is Van Lynden's tone - always inquisitive but never condescending. There might be other books which will give you a lot of information about Rajasthan but Van Lynden's Rajasthan shall remain a front runner due to its evocative prose and dazzling photographs which seem to leap off the page. I recommend Van Lynden's Rajasthan as an antidote for any colorless day.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-06
Tons of fantastic pics, details of fabrics, places etc. If you like Rajastan sty;e, you will fall head over heels for ths heavy "coffee table" book!
Book Description
For decades India has been intermittently tormented by brutal outbursts of religious violence, thrusting thousands of ordinary Hindus and Muslims into bloody conflict. In this provocative work, psychoanalyst Sudhir Kakar exposes the psychological roots of Hindu-Muslim violence and examines with grace and intensity the subjective experience of religious hatred in his native land.
With honesty, insight, and unsparing self-reflection, Kakar confronts the profoundly enigmatic relations that link individual egos to cultural moralities and religious violence. His innovative psychological approach offers a framework for understanding the kind of ethnic-religious conflict that has so vexed social scientists in India and throughout the world.
Through riveting case studies, Kakar explores cultural stereotypes, religious antagonisms, ethnocentric histories, and episodic violence to trace the development of both Hindu and Muslim psyches. He argues that in early childhood the social identity of every Indian is grounded in traditional religious identifications and communalism. Together these bring about deep-set psychological anxieties and animosities toward the other. For Hindus and Muslims alike, violence becomes morally acceptable when communally and religiously sanctioned. As the changing pressures of modernization and secularism in a multicultural society grate at this entrenched communalism, and as each group vies for power, ethnic-religious conflicts ignite. The Colors of Violence speaks with eloquence and urgency to anyone concerned with the postmodern clash of religious and cultural identities.

Sorry in Hyerabad there was total fraternity between Hindus and Muslims till 1969.......2007-05-02
Mr. Kakar obviouslly does not belong to Hyderabad. If he had, he would never have written what he had. Hyderabad - the entire State under the Nizam was a symbol of Hindu Muslim unity. It was one mixed composite community with the same culture. Even the Indian Congress propaganda based on total lies could not influence the Hindus of Hyderabad in the period preceding the invasion of Hyderabad by the might of the British armaments left in India.
India had enforced an illegal total economic, road, rail and air blockade on a land locked country and persistently copied Goebbles in total false propaganda. It was the Congress that was playing always the communal card to the extent that they divided the country. They wanted to play the same games and tricks but did not succeed in Hyderabad. Except for the handful State Congress followers and some Marhatas there were no takers. They were solidly behind the State of Hyderabad under the benevolent Nizam.
The Nizam's just policies for the State hurt no subjects - hence the immense popularity. The Hyderabadi populace irrespective of cast and creed were happy and prosperous. They never had a riot except just onece of Dhoolpet that was immediately contained, unlike thousands of riots and pograms conducted by Congress in the periods before and after partition which the police have supervised.
Even after the occupation of Hyderabad there was no Hindu Muslim riot till 1969 by which time the anti Muslim elements were gaining ground. The instances Mr. Kakar has written about Pushpa's hand under corpses at Osmania hospital is nothing but a figment of imagination.
The Government of India did not honor any agreements including the Standstill Agreement, India did not even agree for a referendum, nothing, nor did India allow the State of Hyderabad to exercise the legal option that was given by the Independence act by which India gained independence. Hyderabad could have joined, India or Pakiatan or remained inswpendent under Terms of Independence. Instead India only wanted annexation with violence and having a holocaust of immense proportioins.
One fails to understand what Mr.Kakar is up to by his provocative book.
Thick lens but thin facts.......2001-03-09
Too much lofty theorizing - only for readers with little real exposure to India's complexities.
A Quick Read on Indian Violence.......2000-05-04
This is the best book on religious violence in India that I have ever read. The author is a psychoanalyst who really gets into the reasons why Hindus and Muslims have these stereotypes of each other. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in Indian history.

A very gorgeous book!.......2005-02-17
I love "India Style". This book is really a fantastic book about incorporating Indian design into almost every home. I found a lot of inspiration here. It is currently the best book on Indian decorating that I own. The photographs are beautiful and colorful, and the text is informative and engaging. I especially liked the fact that homes from all walks of Indian life were featured, not just palaces and luxury hotels. There are also photos of non-Indian homes where the owners have been influenced by Indian design and really allowed their imagination to run wild.
The only drawback to buying this book I've found is that I now have the irresistable urge to paint my house in bright colors and hop a plane to India to go on a shopping spree. Consider yourself warned!
In a word, gorgeous!.......2003-11-11
I'll just make this short and sweet for this short and sweet book. I only wish it had more pages! Inspirational style... if you like bohemian luxury, Indian decor is for you. Get this book to get your ideas rolling with colors, textures, textiles, furniture. Eye candy!
Full of Creative Ideas.......2003-01-26
This book is excellent for those seeking to add a little Indian Influence into the room. Most pictures focus on living room or bedroom areas. However, there are ideas for almost every area. One thing I admired about this book was the use of various color schemes. They show ideas for bold colors like blues and purples and other room designs for quiter elegance such as cremes and beiges. There is something for everyone with a little fondness of Indian Style!
A good basic primer on India Style.......2002-12-13
This book has beautiful photographs of both interiors and exteriors. Most elements of this style, as shown in this book, can be translated by people wanting to incorporate India style into their home. The book tells you which design elements in each photo represent India Style. This book brings India style into the present while still paying homage to the past.
Like other books in the Architectual & Design Library series, this book is great for people who are just starting to explore a style and/or people who want to add a book representative of a style to their collection.
I recommend this book to everyone.

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on artists colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries in India face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying artists colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries to India? How important is India compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of artists colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries vary from one country of origin to another in India? On the supply side, India also exports artists colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries. Which countries receive the most exports from India? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for artists colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries in India. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for artists colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries for those countries serving India via exports, or supplying from India via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where India fits into the world market for imported and exported artists colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for India in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that India is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize India compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

A culinary student's point of view.......2007-08-02
1) Overview of Topics Addressed
For graduates of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) who are about to enter the professional world, this book is an easy way to brush up on basic mathematic skills before entering the job market. This 383 page book covers math topics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, solving percent problems, statistics, business graphics, and measurement systems English and Metric. It helps the student compute business records and transactions such as invoices, purchase orders, stock records, and time cards. Students can also learn to calculate the wages of employees with true-to-life word problem scenarios. For example, "Jack Green is paid $7.25 an hour for a 40-hour week plus time and a half for overtime. Last week he worked 45 hours. How much was his gross pay? Green worked 40 hours of regular time plus 5 hours of overtime". By practicing word problems that are realistic to the profession, this book helps people with basic skills in the restaurant industry.
2) How the Topic Relates to the Hospitality/Restaurant Industry
The hospitality/restaurant industry, according to the CIA Course Catalog 2004-2005, is an "industry that generates an estimated $440.1 billion in annual sales in the US." This book provides chefs a review of fundamental math skills which are imperative for running successful restaurant businesses. It teaches checking and accuracy methods, as well as shortcuts in business computations. "Anyone working in the business world must have a thorough knowledge of multiplication. When you are given the number of items purchased and the price of each, you find the total cost of the purchase by multiplication. Discounts are found by multiplication, as are sales taxes". It provides a practical review of applications to the business world. "Division is widely used by both businesses and consumers. In installment buying, the monthly payments are calculated by using division. When merchandise is purchased in quantity, the unit price is found by division". By using step-by-step explanations and exercises based on forms used in business and word problems drawn from actual business situations to reinforce skills, this book presents case problems from retailing, purchasing, management, and finance which are directly transferable to the hospitality industry.
3) How the Information is Useful to Me as an Executive Chef
This information will be useful to an aspiring executive chef like me because I will be responsible for all aspects of managing the kitchen and kitchen personnel. As an executive chef, I will have to ensure the proper handling, storage, quality preparation, and presentation of all menu items. I will also have to have a thorough knowledge of coordinating the purchase of all labor costs and develop profitable menus. "Many business transactions involve fractions, or parts of units. Many items are sold in pounds or fractions of a pound, in dozens or parts of a dozen. Hourly wages are computed with fractional parts of hours, and overtime pay is usually figured an 1 1/2 times the regular rate". I have to understand the fundamentals of mathematics in order to maintain and control food and labor costs. It is a useful book for the CIA student or graduate because it covers all areas of business mathematics. It starts with decimals and whole numbers. Like building blocks in the CIA curriculum, the book brings students along, bit by bit, through fractions, percents, statistics, and equations, to specifics of business-related mathematics applications such as payroll, discounts, markup/markdown, interest, credit, depreciation, inventory, insurance, and taxes. Procedures, rules, and formulas are broken down. I recommend this book to anyone in the restaurant/hospitality industry professional because it is easy to follow.

Hi, I would like to tell you how much I enjoyed the Business Math book. The book was so fun and easy to catch on to that before I knew it I was done.
