    Book Description

When Saint Francis of Assisi died in 1226, he left behind an order already struggling to maintain its identity. As the Church called upon Franciscans to be bishops, professors, and inquisitors, their style of life began to change. Some in the order lamented this change and insisted on observing the strict poverty practiced by Francis himself. Others were more open to compromise. Over time, this division evolved into a genuine rift, as those who argued for strict poverty were marginalized within the order.

In this book, David Burr offers the first comprehensive history of the so-called Spiritual Franciscans, a protest movement within the Franciscan order. Burr shows that the movement existed more or less as a loyal opposition in the late thirteenth century, but by 1318 Pope John XXII and leaders of the order had combined to force it beyond the boundaries of legitimacy. At that point the loyal opposition turned into a heretical movement and recalcitrant friars were sent to the stake.

Although much has been written about individual Spiritual Franciscan leaders, there has been no general history of the movement since 1932. Few people are equipped to tackle the voluminous documentary record and digest the sheer mass of research generated by Franciscan scholars in the last century. Burr, one of the world's leading authorities on the Franciscans, has given us a book that will define the field for years to come.

      5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-07-03

I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10

After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.

I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!

In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.

Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best!.......2005-12-03

I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing insights.......2005-12-02

I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.

      3 out of 5 stars Almost useless.......2005-05-02

The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
      short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
      arched nose - creativity
      ...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.

      Book Description

A compelling account of the development of a great artist, and a portrait of the tragic character of an entire era

The uncompromising achievement of Elias Canetti has been matched by few writers this century. Canetti worked brilliantly in many forms, but the three volumes that comprise his autobiography are where his genius is perhaps most evident. The first volume, The Tongue Set Free, presents the events, personalities, and intellectual forces that fed Canetti's early creative development. The Torch in My Ear explores his admiration for the first great mentor of his adulthood, Karl Krauss, and also describes his first marriage. The final volume, The Play of the Eyes, is set in Vienna between 1931 and 1937, with the European catastrophe imminent; here he vividly portrays relationships with Hermann Broch and Robert Musil, among others.

3 out of 5 stars Great for the Specialist, Good for the Casual Reader.......2005-09-04

Canetti, a Nobel Prize winner in Literature (1981), is little known but his works and ideas remain for the interested reader. This autobiography is a long read but worth it for those interested in early 20th century Europe and in the German literature of that period.

The highlights of the book are the fluid, likable prose and the rich characterization offered. Canetti draws some very memorable characters, some of which went on to people his writings. The most valuable aspect of the book will be to those with a passion for German literature because Canetti offers his personal impressions and insights about many of his era's great writers, especially Bloch and Musil. He also charts the inspiration and development of his own great works.

Reading some of the other reviews I think is misleading. Nice a read as this book is, I hardly found it to be the masterpiece that so many others claim it to be. It is a major investment of reading time and should be taken only by those with particular interest in the subject matter. Pound for pound, I think Canetti's most famous writings (Crowds and Power, Auto-Da-Fe) are a much better introduction to this thinker. The insights he offers in his long autobiography are relatively sparse. And, as warm and personal as the style of the autobiography is, I would hardly class it `candid.' He doesn't get racy in any way; one would assume his love affairs were all about literary conversations. And the impressions he gives are usually reserved and non-confrontational. One reads about his mother's incredibly controlling behavior but never does he rail against the irrationality of it and express what are surely his true feelings about her. I expected a lot more about the burgeoning Fascism and atmosphere of horror that was rapidly closing in on Europe in the 1930s. Instead, all of this is represented in inchoate concerns about the future. I would have greatly appreciated hearing about his own flight from the Nazis and his feelings about that whole nightmare. He stopped the autobiography well before WWII leaving it as nothing but a looming specter.

But, all in all, it is a nicely done autobiography. His respect for his mentor, Dr. Sonne, speaks volumes about the missing father in his life. His sum-up of Dr. Sonne's agenda gives a wonderful design for the book as a whole:

"What a man touched upon, he should take with him. If he forgot it, he should be reminded. What gives a man worth is that he incorporates everything he has experienced. This includes the countries where he has lived, the people whose voices he has heard. It also takes in his origins, if he can find out something about them. By this he [Sonne] meant not only one's private experience but everything concerning the time and place of one's beginnings. The words of a language one may have spoken and heard only as a child imply the literature in which it flowered. The story of a banishment must include everything that happened before it as well as the rights subsequently claimed by the victims. Others had fallen before and in different ways; they too are part of the story. It is hard to evaluate the justice of such a claim to history. To Sonne's mind history was eminently the area of guilt. We should know not only what happened to our fellow men in the past but also what they were capable of. We should know what we ourselves are capable of. For that, much knowledge is needed; from whatever direction, at whatever distance knowledge offers itself, one should reach out for it, keep it fresh, water it and fertilize it with new knowledge."

      5 out of 5 stars I don't know anything better........2001-10-04

I have never known better literature. I myself am not a good writer so I'll just say is this: Canetti heightend my sensitivity towards life - fundamentally. His autobiography showed me how complex and interesting life can be, if you see it through a mind like Canetti's who is able to describe his perception in a more profound yet boad way than anybody and who chose a corresponding path of life. I'm glad I read him while still in college, because otherwise I had not known how narrowminded I really was before I met Canetti.
      My favorite book.

(PS. English is not my first language so please excuse whatever you don't like about my writing.)

5 out of 5 stars A Genius Way Ahead of his Time.......2001-08-08

I first read Auto-da-Fe on the recommendation of my German teacher at school. Even then, I was astounded by Canetti's humour and intelligence. I was delighted to come across a rather shabby hardbound copy of The Torch in my Ear on sale for £1.00 outside Surrey County Council Library recently.

I settled down to reacquaint myself with Canetti and, like a reunion with an old friend, I was overjoyed to rediscover his warmth, his wit, and his searing intellect. For such a clever man, though, Canetti is still aware he has a reading public eager to hear tales of the famous names, with whom he rubbed shoulders during his very brief time in Berlin. To learn that the great George Grosz was indeed a misogynist and Brecht a slave to fashion gave me that wry smile that I remembered from reading Canetti before.

For anyone wanting to gain a really deep insight into Central Europe in the 1920's and 30's, this is the book to read and not the titillating, ever-so-British accounts of Christopher Isherwood.

5 out of 5 stars a perfect piece of literary fiction.......2000-03-27

what a book, what a writer! having read plenty of literary autobiographies, i am still stunned at the depth and insight of these three volumes. the first, tongue set free, is the most lyrical; the other two focus more on young canetti's developement as a writer and thinker. such is canetti's art that only after reading the books several times the reader notices all the things he is not told... although this autobiography is a great source of enjoyment to everyone who is interested in literature, it should be read with a bit of caution: never to forget that this is, despite everything, literary fiction. i am not implying that canetti is lying (he is not), but he has more purpose than just presenting his times and lifes, and some scenes (like the describtion of café museum) seem to be just describtions while they are full or literary quotes etc. i think it is this that sets canetti's work apart from other writers of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful: A High Point of 20th Century Literature.......1999-04-20

I'm at a loss to convey how great this book is. I think anyone who enjoys literature and fine writing should read it. Canetti was one of the leading writers and intellectuals of the 20th century, and he brings all his formidable talent and insight to this work.

The biography is excellent on many levels. First, it works as a simple biography. Canetti led a very interesting life, and he does an excellent job presenting the important events and influences that shaped him. Because of this, it is a required read for anyone who has enjoyed his other major works (_Auto Da Fe_ and _Crowds and Power_.)

Second, it is great literature. Canetti was an excellent writer, clear and lucid without being bland, with a wonderful ability to see and present the fundamental elements of individuals. His memoirs are full of rich and fascinating characters, which Canetti is able to present either in a few quick strokes or in full detail, depending on their role in his life.

Third, it is a fascinating record of the time. Canetti came of age during and after WWI, and spent much of his early adulthood in the intellectual turmoil of interwar Vienna. Canetti focuses mainly on the intellectual life, describing his interactions with Robert Musil, Bertolt Brecht, Hermann Broch, Karl Kraus, Isaac Babel, and others. Inevitably, though, the memoirs also give some details of everyday existence in central Europe during this chaotic period.

The memoir is not told as a single continuous narrative. Instead, the book gives a series of vivid incidents and characters, the things that Canetti remembered about his life. Because of this, his memoir has a universally high level of power and detail, without long flat stretches of filler. It was his autobiography that finally generated enough support for Canetti to be awarded the Nobel Prize. In my opinion it is is best, most accessible work, and one which can stand with the greatest of 20th century literature.

          Book Description

Capitalism's Eye is an extremely ambitious cultural history of how people experienced commodities in the era of industrial expansion.
Writing against the dominant argument that the 'society of the spectacle' emerged fully formed in the mid-nineteenth century, Kevin Hetherington explains that the emergence of a culture of mass consumption dominated by visual experience was a much slower process, not truly ascendant until after the First World War. Looking at the department stores, home life, and the great exhibitions around the turn of the last century, Capitalism's Eye promises to transform how we understand both the cultural history of capitalism in America and Europe and the historical roots of the mediated spectacle that dominates our world today.

            Book Description

According to Thaler, the presence of cameras in the courtroom is a pervasive technology that can affect public perceptions of the judicial process, change the behavior and attitudes of trial participants, and ultimately transform the sober process of justice into a media event designed for maximum public exposure. The author has interviewed more than 50 people--prominent journalists, academics, and members of the legal system--and brought together their observations in a fascinating historical and psychological profile of the televised courtroom. Thaler provides a historical overview and theoretical perspective, and discusses the new cable courtroom network and the current and continuing camera debate in New York City. He makes reference to the recent celebrated cases involving Amy Fisher, William Kennedy Smith, and Rodney King, then turns to an in-depth case study of the Joel Steinberg murder trial, including insights from the presiding judge, trial attorneys, witnesses, jurors, and the defendant himself, as well as journalists who covered the trial. The author concludes that the process of justice is slowly being turned into an entertainment vehicle, not unlike the show trials of bygone eras.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis is concerned with active control methods for stabilizing the mirror vibrations of free-electron laser weapons on ships so that the laser continues to deliver full power Alignment of the mirrors is critical for proper operation because the electron beam and optical mode must substantially overlap. The alignment is expected to be difficult to maintain in a shipboard environment A theory for controlling the vibrations of a single-degree-of-freedom system is developed and checked by numerical simulations An apparatus consisting of a flexing aluminum strip was constructed in order to probe the fundamental behavior of actual systems which eventually become unstable as the control gains are increased A computer data acquisition system (LabVIEW) was implemented so that experiments could be more efficiently and accurately performed% Proportional and derivative controls were used to stabilize the motion of the strip. Experiments reveal that the derivative control behaves according to the theory In particular, the instability is understood as the result of positive feedback due to a phase shift of the unstable mode However, the instability due to the proportional control does not behave according to the theory Improvements that would allow for greater control gains and thus greater stabilization are suggested

                    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book by a one-of-a-kind professor!.......2004-05-15

Dr. Kevin Lee was a professor of mine when he worked at West Virginia Wesleyan College. This book is a wonderful way to spend more time with your family and even friends, moving out of the run around life and TV on all the time world. This books makes going TV free super easy, and it is wild how it improves relationships with the people you interact with. It is not an anti-media book at all. Dr Lee was my instructor for a class called "Media Studies" he knows hot the media is a big part of life today, but with this book it makes use recall that TV and Media is something that in the big picture is a new thing, and for years people did things as a family! A MUST READ!!

4 out of 5 stars Does What It Intends To Do........2002-08-30

This book is subtitled "A Guidebook for a TV-Free Week" and rightly so, because that is exactly what it is. I do not watch much television to begin with and have spent many weeks television free. However, I agree with the challenge presented in the book that as Americans we spend way too much time watching televsion and that we should spend at least one week television free. I have known for some time that much of television is a void. However, even I was challenged by some of the observations the book makes. The only negative comment is that the book is rather short and does not expand upon some of the issues it raises. Of course, that is why it is a guidebook. Overall, a wonderful book that can help a person or family spend at least one week of their lives televsion free.
