Book Description

When Dorinda Makanaonalani Nicholson was six years old, she had a unique experience—she watched the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor from her front yard.

On December 7, 1941, Dorinda and her family were living in Pearl City, on a small peninsula that extends into the center of Pearl Harbor. That Sunday morning, most of the American Pacific fleet was peacefully anchored only a few hundred yards from her front door. The waves of attacking Japanese planes flew over her home so low she could see the faces and even the goggles of the pilots. Today, she treasures an incendiary bullet, the only one remaining of the many that her father dug out of their burned kitchen wall.

In PEARL HARBOR CHILD, Dorinda Nicholson tells her personal account of the Japanese attack and the events that followed, including blackouts, rationing, air raid drills, victory gardens, censorship, gas masks and much more. While there are many books about the Pearl Harbor attack, PEARL HARBOR CHILD is the only one that tells the story from a civilian point of view, written by a woman, through the eyes of a child.

The book is a child's story, but not just for children. It is a voice from WWII that has not been heard before. The voice is that of an American child who tells what she saw, how it felt, what happened on that day and through the balance of what became World War II. The book was authenticated and originally published by the Arizona Memorial Museum Association.

The newly released 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition, published by Woodson House Publishing, contains more than 100 photographs, some never published before, plus a two-page map that pinpoints major events.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all ages!.......2004-09-22

This book is excellent. As a young girl living on the Pearl City Peninsula, also known as Pearl Harbor, the author witnessed the bombing on 7 December 1941. She could see the burning ships that were anchored near her family's home. She recalls all too well that horrible morning and the days, weeks and months that followed. She wanted to share her story with the world. She has managed to do just that and very well I might add.

The author wrote about hearing the planes coming in flying low-then her family heard the explosions. They went outside and watched the attack. The family got into their car and tried to get to a safer area. They stopped long enough to see the battleships burning-then they hid in the sugarcane fields. The military police found them hiding and told them they could not go home. Instead they were sent to the recreation hall of a sugar mill where many other families joined Dorinda's family. It was almost a week later before the families in the sugar mill were allowed back to their homes. Dorinda's parents found shrapnel and bullets embedded in their walls. "Pearl Harbor Child" made me stop and really think about other people on the islands and what they must have gone through.

She wrote about expecting another invasion by the Japanese. She was the beaches lined with barbed wire. Everyone had to be fingerprinted and carry identification. Food became scarce. Soldiers were everywhere with bayonets on their rifles. Everyone was issued gas masks. Money had to be exchanged. Blackouts and curfews were strictly enforced. Mail was censored. The Japanese-Americans and other foreigners were placed in internment camps.

So much more can be found in this incredible book written in a simple manner to help others understand a little of what the Hawaiian people went through during the war. I credit the author with doing an excellent job. I was very impressed with "Pearl Harbor Child." This is truly a book for people of all ages to read!

3 out of 5 stars An interesting perspective.......2001-04-23

This is an interesting book for the unique view which it provides, that of a child on the base during and after the attack. There are flaws in the pictures (two separate pictures describe pictured American planes as Japanese), but overall these are minor errors. A quick and interesting read!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2000-05-10

This book is just incredible! It brings WWII and the Pearl Harbor story alive and through the eyes of a child. It has lots of great pictures, not only of the attack, but also personal pictures of her during that time in Hawaii. An absolute must-read for any WWII buff or anyone who wants to hear the personal and moving story of a little girl who witnessed this historic event.

Excellent book to help make children realize what the war was like - rationing, families torn apart, disruption of everything. Lots of photographs. Make sure to get the revised edition - the original did not have enough photos. Written at 5th grade level

    4 out of 5 stars through a child's eyes.......2002-07-07

In "A Note to the Reader", the editors say, "In the words and pictures of Hawaiian children, this unique book is a living history of our islands. To achieve it, we asked our children to paint or write about their Hawaii; what they understand about how Hawaii came to be". Compiled from more than six thousand entries, it's a warm and wonderful selection of stories, drawings and paintings.

The images are fresh and imaginitive, starting with a blazing pink and orange sun over a turbulent ocean..."In the middle of the Pacific Ocean there was nothing. Hawaiian people were not born yet. If we were born, what would we stand on ?".
There are two fabulous paintings depicting the volcanic activity that was the beginning of the islands, describes how they became populated, its kings and queens, the missionaries, etc. In the last chapter, there is a rather gloomy prediction of "what Hawaii will be like" (in 2000), with highways, bridges, and "super canoes".

There are two pages that list the names of the 253 children who contributed to this book, but the individual pictures and stories are not credited. Published nearly 30 years ago, it makes one wonder what happened to these creative children, and if they are still expressing themselves with as much color, wit, and sincerity.

                  Book Description

One of the best known and most influential artists in the history of art, Michelangelo was a prolific sculptor, painter, architect, and draftsman. This lovely book focuses on more than 250 of his drawings executed in chalk, charcoal, and pen and ink. Distinguished art historian Hugo Chapman examines this array of works and discusses how the act of drawing figured prominently in Michelangelo’s work.

Chapman considers the artist’s training and his choice of various techniques in a close investigation of the central role of drawing in Michelangelo’s career. The author describes the artist’s frugal use of paper, explaining how he often recycled letters and drawings (working on both the front and back of the sheet) throughout his career. Organized chronologically, the book looks at Michelangelo’s early development in Florence and Rome, his accomplishments as papal artist for the Sistine Chapel ceiling with its myriad preparatory studies, and his drawings for the tomb of Julius II, the Medici tombs, the Laurentian library, and the Last Judgement. The fascinating history of the fate of Michelangelo’s drawings after his death is also explored in detail.

This is a really fine book. It's great to have all of these drawings together in one book. The drawings have a life of their own. As a bonus I was surprised to find here some of the best shots of the Sistine Chapel post-restoration. Amazing!

2 out of 5 stars The exhibition Hugo, the exhibition..........2006-06-25

It seems that Mr. Chapman set out to survey the life of Michelangelo, which is frustrating, as this book is the sole document to 'catalog' what is the largest exhibition of Michelangelo's drawing in modern times.

Also unnerving is that while being a $50 paperback, the British Museum did not license decent prints to accompany a book about M's life, so the reader must suffer black and white, grainy photographs of 'Battle of the Centaurs' and other pivotal works, reproduced with the quality of a cheap high school art survey text.

The pictures from the Exhibition itself are severely scaled and butchered, many only given half to a fourth of a page. The delightful 'Study of Infants' is included at barely 3" across, the result of which are sub 1" inch figures. Let me reiterate that this figure study was in the exhibition that Mr. Chapman's book is supposed to catalog and accompany!

Works such as St. Matthew, the Bruges Madonna, the Dying Slave, etc.. are just crammed in postage stamp, sub 1.5" thumbnails and confined to the edges, as if warring with the text itself. If this metaphor was to be taken literally, I would say Mr. Chapman's text was actually the victor. For a book about M's drawings to have the Gardner Pieta scaled to a size of 1.5" or the Studies for the Libyan Sibyl at 2", both black and white; is pretty inexcusable.

Mr. Chapman however, does a decent job of digesting most contemporary knowledge about the man and regurgitating it in a somewhat interesting and easily re-digestible text. It is unfortunate that this book is one of the only places you can see these drawings, and this alone is a reason to own it. However, in the end, this was a book about the drawings, and those who bought this book surely wanted to gaze, not squint, upon the work of the most masterful artist that has ever lived.

I just spoke to Michael Burban a few weeks ago, and am trying to convince him to release a new version of the book. He says he has learned much since he first wrote it, so the new book--if it ever comes out--should be exciting.

5 out of 5 stars I searched the earth for this book.......2000-11-29

When I was very young, I borrowed this wonderful book from a Brooklyn Public Library. The Author, Michael Burban, was a student of Robert Beverley Hale, and in his footsteps, he taught through dissecting old master drawings. There was no greater draughtsman than Michelangelo. Imagine how much can be learned from when one of the most respected artists of the Students art League, picks apart the drawings of Michelangleo. Lessons from Michelangelo. The drawings are unparalled. Burban, chooses, old and late drawings that span the life of Michelangelo. Burban, starts out by pointing out the very basics of form, perspective, proportion, gesture, then delves into artistic anatomy, and finishes with some thoughts on drapery. It stresses discipline and basics, and doesn't sell any shortcuts. After keeping this book out of the library for quite some time, it was mistakenly returned. I searched the library for months, never to see it again. I ventured to the Students art league in NY, unfortunately Burban was away for that term. I contacted a used book specialist. Nearly two years passed, and I received a phone call, the book was found, the price was twice the retail, 75 dollars, what a deal. It was the easily the best book I ever bought. I love this book, it is one of only a few books which I can say has real sentimental value. In a way it changed my life. I appreciate Michelangelo and his beautiful drawings, in no small part, thanks to this book. I wish Burban would write another book, or at least that this book would see a reprint. If you ever have a chance to buy this book, don't think twice. Its a great book.

5 out of 5 stars I searched the earth for this book.......2000-11-29

When I was very young, I borrowed this wonderful book from a Public Library in Brooklyn. The Author, Michael Burban, was a student of Robert Beverley Hale, and in his footsteps, he taught through dissecting old master drawings. There was no greater draughtsman than Michelangelo. Imagine how much can be learned when one of the most respected artists of the Students art League, picks apart the drawings of Michelangleo.

After keeping this book out of the library by renewing it for quite some time, my mother, bless her heart did me a favor and mistakenly returned it. I returned and searched the library for months, never to see it again. I even attempted to go to the source and ventured to the Students art league in NY, hoping to buy an extra copy from the author - unfortunately Burban was away for that term. I contacted a used book specialist and asked them to track down a copy of this book which had made such an impression on me. Nearly two years passed, one day I received a phone call, the book was found, the price was twice the retail, 75 dollars. I was still young and poor, but I didn't think twice about buying it. It was the easily the best book I ever bought.

I love this book, it is one of only a few books which I can say has real sentimental value. In a way it changed my life. I appreciate Michelangelo and his beautiful drawings, in no small part, thanks to this book. I wish Burban would write another book, or at least that this book would see a reprint, so others too can appreciate it. If you ever have a chance to buy this book, don't hesitate.
                  Its a great book.

                      Book Description

The decades from 1500 to 1550 in Florence encompassed one of the most original and outstanding periods in the entire history of art. This gloriously illustrated book gathers and describes many of the beloved paintings, drawings, and sculptures created by the greatest masters of the period along with less familiar but equally beautiful and intriguing works. The contributors to the volume explore the masterpieces of Florence and challenge conventional interpretations of the evolution of this art.

The book outlines the historical context of the Florentine High Renaissance and then discusses drawings, paintings, and sculpture in turn. Focusing on major artists and their contemporaries and allies, the authors demonstrate the great importance of drawing during this period and show that there was a consistency in the brand of creativity found in such artists as Michelangelo, Fiorentino, Cellini, and Bronzino. The authors question the relevance of terms like High Renaissance and Mannerism, and they contend that, contrary to commonly held assumptions, there was no strong stylistic division between art produced in Florence before and after the death of Raphael in 1520.

In this book Michael Hirst describes and analyzes Michelangelo`s drawings in light of the many purposes for which the artist made them, thereby reaching for the first time a full understanding of their character and appearance. Michelangelo's sculptures, paintings and architectures are world renown. However most of us who are not arts experts are hardly aware of the drawings this genius did aeons ago. Hirst has rectified this. This book contains most of Michelangelo's drawings, even those not displayed to the public. I am just a layman and hence am ignorant of all the technical terms involve in studying a piece of drawing. However this does not stop me from enjoying Michelangelo's myriad masterpiece drawings. I am very glad indeed to be educated on another angle of this great genius.

                            Book Description

The family home of Michelangelo Buonarroti--surely Italy's most famous artist--the Casa Buonarroti boasts the world's largest collection of Michelangelo's drawings and personal papers. Now a private foundation and museum, the Casa Buonarroti is also well known for art and antiquities collected by Michelangelo's family members. This volume includes drawings usually kept in storage to protect them from exposure to damaging light and air, among them sketches and preparatory studies for such important works as the Sistine Chapel and the Medici tombs. It affords an extraordinary view of Michelangelo through personal sketches, writings, and studies from the artist's notebooks, as well as insights into his family through painting, sculpture, and graphic works. Among the treasures of the Casa Buonarroti are two marble reliefs: the Madonna of the Steps and the Battle of the Centaurs. In addition, the Museum owns rich collections of paintings, sculptures, majolica ware, and archaeological pieces, as well as the most famous collection in the world of drawings by Michelangelo's own hand.
