Customer Reviews:
Painting flowers.......2006-07-09
I just gave this book to my mother, who paint flowers, and she just love it. A lot of excelent models for painting.
Excellent variety and a beautiful presentation.......2005-08-04
There are many varieties of flowers presented here in beautiful and detailed images. Very little text accompanies the images, but enough to chase down further if other information is needed. It is the images which are the prime focus -- and rightly so.
If I could wish for anything, it would be for more. And more. The design makes me wonder about why each specific flower/composition was chosen, and how many were not. I tend to want to see groupings and images that elaborate on one another.
Receiving this book is like being given a gorgeous and lasting bouquet.
beautiful book.......2004-06-20
This is a beatiful book with extreme close-ups of many different types of flowers. The large size also is a plus so that each image looks grand and brilliant.
Absolutely beautiful........2004-06-05
The number of photographs in _One Hundred Flowers_ is astounding. The colors contrast beautifully against the black background. It's as breathtaking as the publisher claims, and more. Sydney Eddison's introduction, "A Bee's Eye View," leads readers into the photographs and in the essay, "Engendered is the Flower," A. D. Coleman talks symmetry, comparing Feinstein and Chaucer in the timing of their work.
With each section there is a 3- to 6-page piece about the flowers in the photographs (White Flowers, Roses, Pansies, Poppies, Orchids, Irises, Sunflowers and Dandelions, Cosmos and Daisies, Floral Diversity, A Name for Every Flower). Some of the photos remind me of drawings in pastel oils, such as the doubled-flowered evergreen azalea on page 105, the bouquet of pink evergreen azaleas on page 107, and the large picture of a modern rose on 32-33. I can only imagine the modern rose photo hanging on my office wall. Absolutely beautiful.
This book is huge. Place it on your coffee table and company will naturally gravitate to it. Any cultivator or artist will appreciate its ability to bring the conversation around to nature and art. My first thought was my daughter and her drawing class. This book can inspire many ways of sharing it. Be sure to look up all Feinstein's floral books. They are well worth the effort.
Vivid colors, perfect pictures........2004-05-21
I use this book in an artistic setting... The art room in my school has this book, and though I have not taken one class, I felt compelled to try and draw some of these magnificient flowers. They've come out pretty good, but it's not about that. This book is spectacular. The colors are so bright and vibrant. I've flipped through it countless times, and am never bored. I feel like I'm walking in a garden, every time I turn the page.

seashell book.......2007-07-26
I used this book as my sign in book at our wedding 2 weeks ago and everybody loved it. they loved so much that i have to order another one for a close friend who is opening a new restuarant and wants one for the table in the lounge. The rest. is beach house theme is go so well there. The photograpghs are so beatiful. thank you c.f. from ft.lauderdale
Stunning Shells.......2007-07-23
This is an absolutely gorgeous book. I learned of its existence at a beach wedding we attended recently where it was used as a Guest Book. People were expected to select a page and sign in on a shell with a big Sharpie pen. Naturally, when we celebrated our 25th Anniversary at the Yacht Club with a beach/shell/nautical theme last week, we used the book in the same way. People loved looking through the impressive photographs and it will be a beautiful memory maker for years to come!
One Hundred Seashells.......2007-01-10
I purchased this for my friend who has a condo on the water in Naples and it looks beautiful on her coffee table. Everyone who visits admires it. It's a very beautiful book and the perfect hostess gift. We really enjoy it!
One Hundred Seashells.......2006-07-10
Although this book has some compelling and beautiful photographs, they fall short of the high resolution photos we have all become used to. The photos (or perhaps the printing) lacks the clarity and detail that high-res photos (or printing) would have given.
The Intrinsic Beauties of Seashells.......2006-03-28
Photographer Harold Feinstein has an eye for detail, a gift he uses to produce this very polished and beautiful book of the mysteries of shells. The book is not meant to be a resource for shell collectors or a scientific treatise on the development and geographical influences on the presence of types of shells that strew the ocean floor as well as the secret beachcombing regions of the world. Feinstein elects to approach the shell as an art form and in doing so he has edited a dazzling assortment of the sizes and intricacies of his subject.
After a brief but eloquent introduction by Sydney Eddison who shares her passion for seashells and their complex and astonishing architecture, the remainder of this volume is devoted to full color photographs of every type of shell imaginable. The cover piece is the Nautilus shell and that shell is explored more fully inside the book. The clarity of the photographs is excellent and the studio lighting Feinstein uses allows the viewer to examine the myriad shells from both the inner aspects, the outer form, and a combination of both with backlighting and sensitive illumination seemingly from within.
This is one of those books to while away hours of contemplation. Recommended as an art book. Grady Harp, March 06

James Gardiner's eclectic collection of gay male photos, postcards, play bills, theater posters, and other ephemera is an unguided tour through 100 years of gay male life and culture. Gardiner has wisely followed no specific historical or literary plan--although the photos are arranged in general chronological order--and the effect is striking. As you page through the hundreds of images, you are forced to make your own connections, construct your own sense of reality. Who's a Pretty Boy Then? is a historical and artistic tour de force that brings gay male history alive.
Customer Reviews:
Great Pix, but..........2007-09-06
I got this as a present, and I am never sure what one has to do with picture books. Once seen they seem to have exhausted their usefulness. Nevertheless, it passes the time for novices on this subject; amd opne could always leave it lying around for 'straight' visitors to find...
This picture volume has more the feel of a labour of love than that of a scholarly work, and I am sure it doesn't aspire to that. The fact that it is very much London (UK) based limits its scope for other audiences somewhat despite some Baron von Gloeden images. I did find a 2 or 3 people in there I had come across in my time when clubbing in London; it serves me as a nice memento then. (Bless; Regina Fong)
A multifacteted overview.......2002-03-10
To dismiss this book as just an excuse to dredge up some titillating photographs for the purpose of publishing is an injustice. This collection is an historical perspective on many levels - the camera as a art form since its invention, a survey of sociolgical transformations as to the perception of homosexuality, the psychological sweep from the closet to the stage to Stonewall to the AIDS bedside and beyond. There are many many captured moments that seem voyeuristic in the best sense of the word in that the spontaneity of individuals interacting as well as groups entertaining are fresh and often off guard. Here is a portfolio of tenderness, of hilarity, and of tragedy. Would that there were more essays interspersed to document the various periods traversd. But then we must also pay homage to the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words". Well worth your time.
We were everywhere.......2000-02-14
A great book of wonderful pictures that proves that men have been loving men for quite some times. Really great eye candy with a historical perspective.
Great possibilities, ultimately disappointing.......1999-09-17
There are some wonderful archival photos in this book, but it lacks a basic level of "scholarship" that leaves it as one guy's idiosyncratic take on British-dominated gay history. Seems to me there is way too much focus on drag, and a more international perspective would have helped as well.

Book Description
One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji by the renowned Japanese artist Hokusai is a work of unending visual delight. Considered Hokusai's masterpiece, this series of images captures the simple, elegant shape of Mount Fuji from every angle and in every context. With no more than delicate, engraved outlines and flat washes of gray, Hokusai displays his consummate virtuosity as a draftsman, printmaker, and compositional innovator. Seen behind hanging strips of cloth outside a dyer's shop, or through the close stems of swaying bamboo, Mt. Fuji takes on a variety of guises--at times majestic, ominous, and even occasionally comic--to reflect its multiform meaning within Japanese culture.
Customer Reviews:
Better than I had imagined.......2005-04-01
This book is the next best thing to having the original works. English notes are limited to the beginning and end of the book. I was concerned when I read the review mentioning the cut off Japanese text. Yes, they are cut off, but not lost. The originals would appear exactly the same way. That's because the originals were printed on only one side of double spreads which were folded down the middle, right through those columns of text. You only have to flip the page to see the other half of the text. As for the washed out grays, that is a shame, but I am peronally more interested in Hokusai's line work anyway, so it doesn't bother me. He used the best carvers, so we have a good representation of his original brush work. My one complaint is that the cover on my paperback copy was not well glued to the spine, and fell off in a few minutes. But now my pages spread out flat with no resistance, so maybe it's an improvement.
Essential prints from an "Old Man Crazy about Painting".......2004-04-03
This is Hokusai at his best. His quality of line is exceptional and the images are a constant delight. The fertility of the artist's imagination is nothing short of astonishing. Hokusai gives us the mythological origins of Fuji, simple views of Fuji, pilgrims climbing and descending Fuji, Fuji's reflection, Fuji seen through rain and through mist, Fuji framed by trees, windows and bridges, Fuji from near and Fuji from afar. In one striking interior view, we see some surprised people looking at a miraculous vision of an inverted Fuji that floats on a screen before them. The explanation? A knothole in the house's wooden wall has transformed the building into a kind of giant camera obscura, and the morning sun is projecting an image of the mountain onto the screen. So... Fuji outdoors and Fuji indoors.
One has to make a firm distinction between the original project and this edition. Hokusai's "100 Views of Mt Fuji" first appeared in three separate volumes: this book reprints them in one handy paperback. There are several extremely nice touches about this version. For a start, all the prints are reproduced to scale, and organized in the Japanese manner (i.e. the first print appears at the back of the book, and the last at the front). Better still, the prefaces, colophons, and title pages are all included, too. In total, you actually get 102 views of the mountain, and many of these consist of two separate prints on facing pages. This book is certainly great value for money because it doesn't stop here. Placed at the back of the volume--so as not to interfere with the flow of the prints--are translations of the Japanese texts and a commentary for each view of the mountain. All of these are extremely illuminating, and manage to outline just enough about Japanese history and culture for the images to make perfect sense. There's also an excellent introduction, which goes into more detail about the rich cultural and religious significance of Fuji, and about the nature of Hokusai's project. Why, for example, were there 102 views, not 100? Here's Henry Smith's appealing theory:
"I think that that the two beyond one hundred were related to his underlying preoccupation with long life: they were like the 'one to grow on' candle that we stick in a birthday cake, a wish that he actually live on past his cherished goal of one hundred."
I have just two major gripes to make about this otherwise excellent version of Hokusai's "One Hundred Views..." The first is that the edges of each facsimiled page seem to have been cropped in such a way that some of the original material (generally Japanese writing) has been lost. More seriously, the original prints were made with black ink and a range of grays, but, here, many of these grays appear to be rather washed out. Sometimes this doesn't much matter, but sometimes it seriously effects the legibility of a print. An example: one of the most famous views of the mountain consists of a spider's web with a leaf caught in it. "Where's Fuji?" we wonder. (Hokusai is constantly making us mutter these words to ourselves.) In a good print, we eventually notice a couple of light gray zones at the top of the image, which represent the sky surrounding the top of Fuji. We're seeing the mountain through the web. But, in this book, these grays have almost entirely disappeared and, as a consequence, so has Fuji.
Nevertheless, you should absolutely buy this book. Rarely has so much inventiveness, wit and visual poetry been crammed into such a small space.
One of the greatest.......2000-10-14
Hokusai is my second favorite Japanese print artist whose art reflects mostly nature. I have two pictures of his hanging on wall. 100 Views of Mt. Fuji is one of his most beautiful works. It depicts the seasonal changes and the things done on Mt. Fuji. If you are intrested in Japanese woodprint and love nature, I'd strongly advice you to get this book. Awesome!

Book Description
hat do celebrities like Carol Burnett, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Kathleen Turner, Alec Baldwin, and Sarah Jessica Parker have in common? Talent, yes-but in this case, the common denominator happens to be a homely cardigan sweater. It is amazing how many different ways one sweater can be worn! By giving people a common tool to express themselves, Mosher has put them all on equal ground, encouraging each person's most unique quality to shine through. Celebrities featured include Dominick Dunne, Matthew Broderick, Ted Danson, Jason Alexander, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Tim Allen, Noah Wyle, Quentin Crisp, Josh Hartnett, Ryan Phillippe, and many other top names from the worlds of theater, film, TV, music, dance, and literature. Royalties for The Sweater Book will be donated to AIDS charities Broadway Cares and Cassidy's Place.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2005-10-01
Wow! I didn't think it could happen, but there it is. Laurelle, you look beautiful!
Beautiful.......2005-01-16
I love this book. Stephen Mosher is a truly gifted artist and this book is just beautiful. Having each celebrity wear the same sweater for the photographs is so clever and it's fun seeing how everyone chose to present themselves and the sweater. The fact that it benefits AIDS research is an added bonus. I'd highly recommend this beautiful book.
Yet Another Celebrity Tribute Book.......2004-05-18
Another of many insipid self-promos, "The Sweater Book" includes hundreds of photographs of B-level celebs mugging for the camera. "The Sweater Book" is little more than coffee-table pap, brimming with self-indulgent rhetoric and imagery, while lacking in material substance. The recurring theme (a single sweater draped over the subject being photographed) makes a trite and heartbreaking display of the lengths washed-up stars will go to in order to get their face back into the public domain. The quality of poses range from a droll tolerance to a sad, (almostSunset Boulevard-esque) rapaciousness for attention on behalf of antediluvian former-entities.
"The Sweater Book" is a mawkish monument best left to be forgotten. Instead of misguidedly purchasing this book (of which a portion of the proceeds go to AIDS organizations), donate the monies directly to a charity. It will ultimately be more satisfying.
insight for the fans.......2004-02-21
I truly enjoyed both reading and viewing this book. Due to the commentary, I found I learned things about Mr. Mosher's subjects that made me feel a part of the photos. I felt like I was there during their shoots experiencing the whole thing. What an interesting take on a photography book! If you are a true fan of any of these celebritys you absolutely must purchase this book!
Simply Lovely.......2004-01-27
I saw a feature on The Sweater Book in People Magazine. The photos there intrigued me and so I went in search of it. It was hard to find at first but once I did, I could not put it down and I bought it outright. In this book the artist (Stephen Mosher) has captured so many of my personal favourite actors and personalities in a light in which we, their audience, seldom see them. That is the state of being honest and themselves. More often than not, show folk are always performing or clowning for photo shoots and we rarely see any glimpse of the real person. Not so with The Sweater Book. By disarming his subjects with his common thread (a simple sweater) Mosher has given us a journey of artistry and a look into the hearts of his subjects. Bravo Stephen Mosher. You are the Herb Ritz of the 21st Century!

I have an idea...!.......2002-02-25
Called 'American Dreams' it might have been justly titled 'American Commercial Trivia'. Each year from 1889 thru 1989 has a business idea explained in a few hundred words and stock archive photos. Of course, in some years not too much happens, the spread for 1956 covers the interstate highway program and 1935 gives a page to National Labor Relations Act and the AFL CIO.
A book of interesting ideas and products that have changed our lives explained in a superficial way. I would have expected something with more substance from The Wall Street Journal...'the daily diary of the American Dream!
