Book Description
One of the best known and most influential artists in the history of art, Michelangelo was a prolific sculptor, painter, architect, and draftsman. This lovely book focuses on more than 250 of his drawings executed in chalk, charcoal, and pen and ink. Distinguished art historian Hugo Chapman examines this array of works and discusses how the act of drawing figured prominently in Michelangelo’s work.
Chapman considers the artist’s training and his choice of various techniques in a close investigation of the central role of drawing in Michelangelo’s career. The author describes the artist’s frugal use of paper, explaining how he often recycled letters and drawings (working on both the front and back of the sheet) throughout his career. Organized chronologically, the book looks at Michelangelo’s early development in Florence and Rome, his accomplishments as papal artist for the Sistine Chapel ceiling with its myriad preparatory studies, and his drawings for the tomb of Julius II, the Medici tombs, the Laurentian library, and the Last Judgement. The fascinating history of the fate of Michelangelo’s drawings after his death is also explored in detail.

Michelangelo Drawings.......2007-02-02
This is a really fine book. It's great to have all of these drawings together in one book. The drawings have a life of their own. As a bonus I was surprised to find here some of the best shots of the Sistine Chapel post-restoration. Amazing!
The exhibition Hugo, the exhibition..........2006-06-25
It seems that Mr. Chapman set out to survey the life of Michelangelo, which is frustrating, as this book is the sole document to 'catalog' what is the largest exhibition of Michelangelo's drawing in modern times.
Also unnerving is that while being a $50 paperback, the British Museum did not license decent prints to accompany a book about M's life, so the reader must suffer black and white, grainy photographs of 'Battle of the Centaurs' and other pivotal works, reproduced with the quality of a cheap high school art survey text.
The pictures from the Exhibition itself are severely scaled and butchered, many only given half to a fourth of a page. The delightful 'Study of Infants' is included at barely 3" across, the result of which are sub 1" inch figures. Let me reiterate that this figure study was in the exhibition that Mr. Chapman's book is supposed to catalog and accompany!
Works such as St. Matthew, the Bruges Madonna, the Dying Slave, etc.. are just crammed in postage stamp, sub 1.5" thumbnails and confined to the edges, as if warring with the text itself. If this metaphor was to be taken literally, I would say Mr. Chapman's text was actually the victor. For a book about M's drawings to have the Gardner Pieta scaled to a size of 1.5" or the Studies for the Libyan Sibyl at 2", both black and white; is pretty inexcusable.
Mr. Chapman however, does a decent job of digesting most contemporary knowledge about the man and regurgitating it in a somewhat interesting and easily re-digestible text. It is unfortunate that this book is one of the only places you can see these drawings, and this alone is a reason to own it. However, in the end, this was a book about the drawings, and those who bought this book surely wanted to gaze, not squint, upon the work of the most masterful artist that has ever lived.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent text and detailed descriptions for each image.......2006-07-21
Hartt is an interesting writer and points out details that other writers don't. The quality of the color printing and of the paper itself is high. Since I bought this at Amazon marketplace, I consider it a great value.
However, this is the 'concise' edition (in 1984) of the 1964 book. And the reason the colors are not as bright as another reviewer remembers them is that the book's pictures were taken before the somewhat controversial cleaning and restoration of the paintings in the Sistine Chapel. They were brownish after centuries of accumulations (smoke and 'protective' applications of varnish), and the project to clean them and restore the colors took place from '81 to '94.
To see what the paintings look like nowadays, color-wise, see _Michelangelo The Frescoes of the Sistine Chapel_ with text by Marcia Hall (Temple University) and photographs by Takashi Okamura, who was the first photographer given the opportunity to photograph the Chapel after the restoration project was completed. Nice book, colors could be a tad brighter.......2005-04-27
I purchased this book recently after having come back from Italy and having seen some of these works of art in person. The books is very nicely put together, a great coffee table piece. The large, thick pages really make the book feel sturdy. The only thing that I found a minor issue with is that the color plates of the paintings should be brighter. An example, the painting of the Doni Madonna was much more bright and colorful than is depicted in the book. In real life even the old paintings in the Sistine Chapel pop out at you (see the Delphic Sybil for another example).

A Terse but Well Illustrated Caravaggio Volume.......2005-12-05
Though this Harry N. Abrams 1989 monograph on Caravaggio is dated and not at all the thorough investigation of a fascinating painter's influence on the history of making and living art, Alfred Moir's CARAVAGGIO does offer an exception introduction to the painter's work. The biography is confined to the opening forty pages and contains enough of the highlights of Caravaggio's career to pique the interest. But the real pleasure of this 'old standard' book is the presentation of the color plates of many of Caravaggio's most interesting works. These are not crowded, each painting being given its own single page opposite which is a fine discussion of the painting both technically and about the subject.
For a fine quick reference book for the paintings addressed in the continuing stream of biographies of Caravaggio written today, this volume is a perfect foil. Just don't expect a scholarly volume or excessive detail. Grady Harp, December 05
Use in combination with Peter Robb's The Man Who Became Car........2001-11-24
Wonderful slick pages. Clear, realistic colors and appropriate collection in black and white. I recommend this book as an intro to Caravaggio's paintings, but in substance I recommend as comparative reading to Peter Robb's The Man Who Became Carravaggio. OUTSTANDING comparisons of this master's life and works can be considered. Together, this was my favorite read of the year.
Bad boys line on.......2001-05-22
Caravaggio (1571-1610) is the Baroque period's black sheep. The tenebrism that so succsessfully glamorises his canvases is perhaps the metaphoric shadow stirred by his own haunting emotional tumult. The artist's private pain. The homoerotic quality of his early paintings is not mentioned today in the Encyclopedia Britannica. But, like Ganymede and Narcissus, his adolescents charm a print that evokes an age long gone. While at Rome he continued his superb though idiocyncratic profession. The genius of his work at odds with the ignominy in his life. To this book Alfred Moir lends an scholarly and savvy article. Detailing Caravaggio's brilliant if bizarre progress. Mr Moir evokes the vivid milieu of this, Baroque's rascal artist, immensily gifted, though always his own worst enemy. Or, was he? Obscure for some time, now Caravaggio shines. And as we also celebrate the James Deans and Orson Welles, buddies from the same pantheom. Pictorially, the text is full of riches, my favorite the 'St Matthew" series. My other favorite is when..."he threw a plate of artichokes onto the face of a waiter..." I was moved, I'm happy to own this book.
The Years of Painting Mortally.......2001-05-10
His "Incredulity of St Thomas," with the focus on Thomas's prodding and Christ's reassuring hands, and his "Madonna of Loreto," with the Virgin and Child approachably compassionate to the muddy-footed pilgrims in rumpled clothing, have been much copied. His "Entombment" has been unanimously acclaimed: with only Christ's and Mary Cleophas's faces fully illuminated; with Nicodemus supporting the dead legs while hunching over to look straight into viewer eyes; and with the Virgin blessing all. But it was his "Lute Player" that CARAVAGGIO called his most beautiful picture: with the tenor score to 16th-century madrigalist Jacques Arcadelt's "Voi sapete ch'io v'amo [You know that I love you]" open for the tenor lute; with the unique horizontal balancing of boy and freshly blooming bouquet of vividly colored flowers; and with the window light source reflected on the carafe. The colorplates in Art History Professor Alfred Moir's book are of such photographic quality that readers clearly see the 17th-century artist's studio window light source reflected in the carafe within his "Boy Bitten by a Lizard." The compellingly thorough text and the author's ANTHONY VAN DYCK prepare readers to go on to the other giants of his time, with Jose Alvarez Lopera's EL GRECO, Kristin Lohse Belkin's RUBENS, Jonathan Brown's VELAZQUEZ, Ludwig Munz's REMBRANDT, and Arthur K. Wheelock's JAN VERMEER.

Simple and Concise Read---Just What I Wanted!.......2006-03-07
In preparation for my trip to Italy I wanted a better understanding of this magnificent man and the work that he did. Specifically, I was looking for a relatively easy read that covered the history of Michelangelo from birth to death. This book met all my expectations. The pictures were not very good quality but I didn't mind since I was going to see most of it in person. Great traveler's history of Michelangelo!
Michelangelo: In the Footsteps of the Master.......2001-09-10
The text in Michelangelo is marvelous. It is charmingly and knowledgeably written, so much so that I hope one of the reprints will be made into a coffee-table extravaganza. It is a superb guide which we will take with us on our next visit to Italy. The appendixes are a triumph in themselvers, and a worthwhile trip into the great master's progression through life. It is a wonderful job.

Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Paint.......2001-05-11
CARAVAGGIO showed early signs of the older artist: minimal decoration, such as for his sorrowful "Mary Magdalene" and his Virgin and Child stepping on a snake, and inner moral dialogue, such as reflected on the different faces within "Salome With the Head of the Baptist." Going to the emotional and psychological core worked as well with his "Amor Victorious" mocking single figure as with his complicated compositions: "Beheading of the Baptist," with all the dark-colored or soft-toned parts balanced, John's blood spelling the artist's name, and the viewer typically drawn in, this time by two prison window witnesses; "Death of the Virgin," with the dull colors of deep anguish organized around the expressive center from her hands to her face and enlivened by the overhanging red drape picking up her dress color; "Madonna del Rosario" pyramid of bottom faithful, middle Dominican mediators, and topmost Virgin with Child; and "Seven Acts of Mercy," with figures modeling behaviors around the different concepts. Giorgio Bonsanti's Scala/Riverside published book on this Lord Byron of art gives strong background for comparative reading of Simon Schama's REMBRANDT'S EYES and Arthur K Wheelock's VERMEER. The author indicates that the painter's light- and shadow-painted naturalism and realism with ordinary people and still lifes ended up behind every artistic trend in Europe, as seen by reading Michael Fried's COURBET'S REALISM, Alan Krell's MANET AND THE PAINTERS OF CONTEMPORARY LIFE, James Henry Rubin's COURBET, and Patricia Wright's MANET.

Book Description
In the late fifteenth century, the palace of Lorenzo the Magnificent, ruler of Florence, was a meeting place of intellectuals, writers, philosophers, and artists. Among them was the talented young Michelangelo, soon to rank with Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael as one of the giants of the Renaissance. This book tells of Michelangelo's training in the workshop of Ghirlandaio, his fascination with the frescoes of Giotto and Masaccio, and the development of his lifelong passion for sculpture.

michelangelo - master of the renaissance.......2003-11-04
As a sixth grade teacher, I found this book to be a fascinating resource for students. The book is sectioned by Michelangelo's works, such as by sculptures, paintings, and architectural works. The photos are beautifully displayed and each work has a description for the reader. In addition, a chronological biography is outlined page after page as it relates to his works. Information such as his lifestyle, personal events, and affiliations and accomplishments are described. What's great about the book is the fact that it includes information about the renaissaince, such as other artists and important figures of the times. This gives the reader a feel for the period and gives an opportunity to make connections to its significance in time. A great book for both young readers and adults.
Book Description
Enter the dark, compelling world of the 16th-century Italian artist Caravaggio and discover the drama and passion of his religious paintings and his masterful handling of color. The DK ArtBook series presents both the life and works of each artist within the cultural, social, and political context of their time. To make the books easy to consult, they are divided into three areas -- the life and works of the artist, historical and cultural background, and analysis of major works -- which are identifiable by side bands. Each spread focuses on a specific theme, with an introductory text and several annotated illustrations. Few art history texts contain such abundance of full-color illustrations. The index section is also illustrated and gives background information on key figures and the location of the artist's works.
Customer Reviews:
Almost all I wanted.......2000-09-15
I purchased this book while reading "M - the Man Who Became Caravaggio". "M" has almost no pictures and I was looking for a good source of his works. There is no index of works in this books, so I spent a lot of time thumbing back and forth trying to find paintings. Also, a few of the works discussed in "M" don't appear here. I enjoyed the format in which the paintings are presented, except for a couple of instances where a detail of a painting was shown, but not the whole painting.
Vey Useful Guide to Caravaggio's Work.......2000-01-15
The main reason why I purchased this book was to assist me in viewing this artist's complete works when reading other mainstream books about Caravaggio, namely: 'Caravaggio: A Passionate Life' and 'M' - both excellent books. The colour plates were lovely and each had detailed text to assist you in your studies of his work. This is a nice and easy to read guide book to this artists beautiful work. The narrative provides enough detail about Caravaggio's life and work to give you the basic idea but do not expect a detailed account, you will have to look elsewhere. Overall this a quick reference guide and is well worth a look.
A little but complete book.......1999-12-30
This book is useful because, I found a wide range of information about Caravaggio (historical info, pics)in few pages.
Interesting.......1999-08-01
This is very interesting because the writer is an historic researcher
