When American kids of a certain vintage--Bill Clinton, for example, but not Bob Dole--put down their childish things, they picked up MAD magazine. It didn't leave their hands until adulthood hit, and maybe after. The magazine ain't what it used to be, so it's easy to forget how keen it once was. MAD About the Sixties is a long-overdue collection of material from that seminal humor magazine's salad days. It's a welcome reminder that when MAD was good, it was very, very good: it featured solid writing coupled with great art, month after month. The movie and television parodies ("Bats-Man," "Star Blech") are sure to be a hit, whether you saw the originals the first time around or as reruns. While it helps to have lived through the era--particularly for the ad parodies--there's enough generic daffiness in MAD About the Sixties to satisfy the reader who never saw Wings, much less Paul McCartney's other band.

Laughing is healthy.......2006-12-01
You would like this edition.A friend of mine came from the States and lent me only once, but I must own it to read through it again.I like Mad magazines since I was a kid.To me a person should be a little mad or
funny. But also be intelligent at the same time.
Unfortunately, there are people who are only mad.
A History text of a decade, with a few boffo laughs.......2006-03-26
Great for us Baby Boomers. Younger readers will know the Beatles, but what will they make of "Nikita Kruschev" (who seems to be in more stories than anyone else), or "Cassius Clay", or Joey Bishop? If you are a baby boomer you will enjoy running barefoot through all the nostalgia, scatteringflowers and babana peels (there's even a joke about smoking them!). If you are a BB's parent you will be able to say "I told you so". But younger readers whoare not History buffs will probably start fairly quickly skipping pages to find Don Martin and Spy vs Spy.
Humorous Summary Of The Decade.......2000-07-17
This book, which is a collection of things compiled from Mad Magazine, is funny summary of the decade. Mad About The 60's covers many of the most popular movies and tv shows from the 60's with their usual style of parody. This book also features many of the funniest cartoons that would appear monthly in the magazine such as Dave Berg, Don Martin, ect. Many of the featured elements of this book have a lot to do with the attitude, politics, and lifestyle of the 60's. For a Mad Magazine fan this book is a nice buy.
This is an OK book........1999-10-11
What can one say about mad magazine? I've been reading for a long time. Even though I wasn't alive in the sixties, this book portrays them fairly well. Aside from Mad About The Seventies, this currently tops the Mad Magazine Humor list. With parodies of Gilbert and Sullivan, My Fair Lady, and Lawerence of arabia, this is a must read. My favriote section was in the late sixties. Overall, Superb.
A great addition to lovers of Mad Magazine.......1998-03-22
Anyone who has been following Mad, will really enjoy this book. It is a bit difficult to read like a novel. But, you keep coming back to it and each section keeps you smiling away.
Book Description
Though The Velvet Underground existed for no more than three years with its original lineup, it is considered to be not just the "ultimate New York band" but one of the most influential rock groups ever. Among its devotees are David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, Joy Division, and Nirvana, along with hot new groups such as the White Stripes and the Strokes.
Witts places the band and its genesis in the cultural context of Manhattan's beatnik bohemianism, its radical artistic environment, and the city's reaction to California's "Hippie" counterculture. Lou Reed's Brill Building background is also considered, while his Primitives (1964-65) and Velvet Underground (1965-70) songs are examined within the stylistic context of rock music. The band's sound world is likewise considered in this light. John Cale's experimental contribution is assessed, especially his work for LaMonte Young (The Theatre of Eternal Music), and what he carried from that experience into the Velvet's sound.
Andy Warhol, known to the group as Drella, became the band's manager and producer in 1965. He installed his "superstar" Nico in the line-up (which already included a female drummer). Witts examines the radical nature of the Velvet's Warhol-period performances, vis-à-vis issues of gender, sexuality, and the drug culture which was associated with the Warhol Factory scene, and contemplated in many of Reed's songs.
Witts studies the musical influences of The Velvet Underground on punk, post-punk, and subsequent rock movements, culminating in the group's 1993 reunion. He also indexes the variety of media constructions that the group endured through the years and how these affected the attempts of Cale, Nico, and Reed to establish solo careers.
Customer Reviews:
Top Marks........2006-11-19
It must be a near impossible brief to write something aimed at both music undergrads and the `general reader', which this book claims to do but I think Richard Witts pretty much manages to pull it off. `The Velvet Underground' is the first in a series of books on pop icons, (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and others are to follow) which not only examines the musical, social and cultural influences on `The Velvets' but which proves to be at one and the same time a downright enjoyable read.
Although set against the background of Manhattan's down town drug culture, this is no seedy romp through the under belly of the 1960s New York music scene. This is a serious book in which just about every aspect of the band's genesis, demise and subsequent influence on punk, post punk and rock music is covered. Each Velvet in turn is subjected to detailed scrutiny in terms of background, his/her gravitation to New York City, musical interests and experiences, influences felt, and contribution to the band and its radical sound-world.
Cale's Experimentalism and his association with the avant-gardist La Monte Young and The Theatre of Eternal Youth, probably receives the most overtly academic analysis, but Reed, Morrison, Tucker, Nico, Warhol and Morrissey are also fully scrutinized in a clear, cogent and well argued challenge to much of the myth and hyperbole which has grown up around this `confluence of misfits' (Witts).
Serious it might be, but anecdotes a-plenty and some sharp comments stop it slipping into too-dry academic commentary. (There's a very funny Witts-ism following a Nico quote which I won't reveal. You can read it for yourself.) So, as long as the general reader who picks up this book has a somewhat serious interest in music or The Velvets, I doubt he will be disappointed. And if the undergrads ever get around to opening the cover, even they might come away having learned something pertinent :-)
Book Description
For more than eighty years the Jewish Daily Forward's legendary advice column, "A Bintel Brief" ("a bundle of letters") dispensed shrewd, practical, and fair-minded advice to its readers. Created in 1906 to help bewildered Eastern European immigrants learn about their new country, the column also gave them a forum for seeking advice and support in the face of problems ranging from wrenching spiritual dilemmas to petty family squabbles to the sometimes hilarious predicaments that result when Old World meets New Isaac Metzker's beloved selection of these letters and responses has become for today's readers a remarkable oral record not only of the varied problems of Jewish immigrant life in America but also of the catastrophic events of the first half of our century.
Customer Reviews:
Nice look back at a bygone world, but a bit dated.......2005-05-18
Overall, this is a fond look back at some of the letters sent to and answered by the editor of the Yiddish-language daily 'Forverts,' dating from the first letters in the Aughts and going till what was the present day at the time this volume was first published, the Sixties. We see over time how attitudes (social, cultural, religious, political, personal, marital) change, and watch as peoples' primary concerns go from runaway husbands, helping relatives to immigrate, American friends laughing at one's intended spouse for being such a greenhorn, unions, having trouble finding work, not earning enough money, and even some seemingly petty problems, like a husband refusing to shave off his beard, which means that he has a harder time finding work and earning money, to more modern concerns like interdating, intermarriage, having an Xmas tree in the house (even though both spouses are Jewish!), having to conceal one's religious identity at work, a young man being upset his peers aren't as religious or in tune with the spirit of the old country as his older relatives are, and a wife who persuaded her husband to buy her a television and now does almost nothing but watch tv.
I loved the letters and the responses to them, though as should be expected some of the responses are a bit dated. For example, a mother writes because one of her sons has stopped eating meat, which really concerns her and her husband, and the boy wouldn't even eat meat when they took him to a restaurant to show him that "everyone" eats meat. The editor advised them to take the boy to a psychiatrist to "cure" him of being a vegetarian, although he also ran a response to his response from a member of a national Jewish vegetarian group, pointing out how more and more people were becoming vegetarians and that it doesn't imply there's anything wrong with one or that it makes one less healthy. It's stunning to realise that in 1945 vegetarians were considered practically mentally ill, as well as some of the other responses which were products of their time. However, some of the editorial comments to the letters and responses are dated as well and could use a revised, more modern edition. For example, in the introduction it's pointed out that many of these immigrants of the early 20th century had a lot in common with the hippies and freethinkers "of today," what with their philosophy of free love and radical politics. That "of today" comment dates this edition right off of the bat. There are also some editorial comments about letters concerning interdating and intermarriage (including one on interracial interfaith dating) clearly grounded in the era in which this volume was published; I'm also very much against it, but a lot has changed since the Sixties, and most people intermarry and interdate for different reasons than they did back then, as well as how it's no longer considered that taboo, drastic, and socially unacceptable. Another example is how the editor reflects on one letter about a young woman who is upsetting her family because she's pretending to be a Christian at her workplace, pointing out that "even today" many Jews, including his own sister, have to do that, that his sister would wear a cross necklace to work as part of that charade. Nowadays it's quite illegal to even inquire into a prospective employee's religious background, and an employer would be sued for firing or refusing to hire someone who wasn't Christian! Still, all in all, it's a very enjoyable book and a great look back at a bygone era in American history, though it would be nice if it were reissued with more modern relevant editorial commentary.
BINTEL BRIEF NOT ALL IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE..........2004-12-29
I was curious about The Forward Yiddish newspaper having the equivalent of Dear Abby back to the beginning of the 20th century on the lower east side. It seemed to be advice to the lovelorn, but covered much more earthy territory, stories of work drudgery and lost dreams, of hard work and success, but serious family problems. At first Metzger gave what I thought was sound, common sense advice in family problems and cultural difficulties, but then I started noticing what we now consider attitudes of racial intolerance, especially when a Jewish man fell in love with a Gentile girl, a 'schicksa.' The advice was to break off the relationship immediately as they come from different worlds and the marriage would never work. They gave this advice to a young man in love who asked for the editor's advice since his parents promised him they would commit suicide if he married her! I don't like to hear stuff like that, but it's true that was the common 'wisdom' at the time and I suppose we should know that that was the sad truth of the times, as late as the 50's such advice came from the so-called wise editor(s) of The Daily Forward.

Book Description
It's late at night. Nothing really good on TV. Perhaps a book. Something different. What to read? Nothing with zillions of footnotes. Nothing with "redeeming social value". I definitely don't want any more work-related articles. And I'm tired of those "cutesy" mysteries. What's left?
HALE MEN OF FORDHAM: HAIL! is a recapturing of one's college years. A return to the years of 1960-1964.in New York City and the world before the crushing full impact and embarrassment called "Vietnam". We had sports in school. We studied to be granted a degree. We worried about the future. College was really not different from today's college environment. Or was it? "How about November 22, 1963?" It was more than just my birthday!

Book Description
Leaving an oppressed and poverty stricken Sicily, nine-year-old Mario Ferrara and his family begin a new life in what they believe is the Promised Land. However, the American dream soon becomes tainted. Living in New York's Little Italy affords the Sicilian immigrants opportunity but brings with it a struggle against discrimination and injustice.
Decades later, an Italian witch-hunt spearheaded by a relentless congressman sows seeds of rebellion in Mario's heart. He becomes exasperated by the riots and violence of the turbulent `60s, a time when growing discontent due to racial turmoil culminates in a fierce civil rights movement and anger over a deadly Vietnam war gives rise to a mass movement in opposition to the government. Tormented by the chaos of the times and driven by a strong sense of heritage and his love of la famiglia, Mario takes on the fight against the power, greed, and corruption in business, government, religion, and society. This revolutionary man's tenacious persistence threatens his life and all he holds dear--his family and his friends.
A vindictive prosecutor, a manipulative businessman, and a ruthless cardinal tied to the Vatican Bank are out to destroy him. His efforts to right wrongs drag him deeper into an abyss of conflict. Disorder and betrayal lead to a tumultuous murder trial rising out of prejudice and fear.
His dreams transport him to the depths of hell and to the wonderful, mystical and fantastic lands he had heard of in childhood. These journeys reshape his rebellious idealism in mysterious ways.
Never giving up his quest for liberty, Mario "the peddler" passionately dares to challenge the very fabric of society's traditions, institutions, and belief systems. Is he a quixotic figure, fighting windmills of his mind, or a dauntless hero, fighting a very real battle?

Customer Reviews:
A Must for Networking.......2007-07-30
For anyone interested in understanding the world of networking, Trish Rubin's New York Minute: Sixty-Second Tips to Megawatt Business Power-Event Networking takes you along on her networking journeys and shows you how it is done in an easy-to-read format. After reading this little gem of a book, I felt as if I had just sat across the table with Trish, over a great glass of wine, while she shared what I considered to be a great primer into networking.
A Quick, Fun and Practical Guide by the Queen of Networking.......2007-07-22
We are hard wired to be social animals, but there is one particular social and business skill - networking - where many of us are not as good as we could be. Yet a good network is almost always an essential ingredient to a successful career.
Though some people are probably better at networking than others, Trish Rubin shows us that it is a skill that can be learned using a simple plan.
The first time that I met the author, I was amazed at how quickly she established rapport with all the people sitting around a table, focusing on each of them remembering one or two facts about them and making lasting links. She once said that when she is a networking event she is "like an octopus on roller skates!" But you would not know it: she appears completely unhurried, and with time for everyone. In this book she tells us exactly how she does it.
Why the title? Not only does Trish explain how to network in sixty seconds, it is also a mnemonic:
Make a Meaningful Start
Invite Connectivity
Nice Work
"U" Get Me
That's a Wrap
Evaluate your EffortsI
In the book she describes exactly what each means, and how to start applying the principles immediately.
A good test of a plan or idea is to see if it can be applied in different situations and environments. It is telling that Trish has used her methods successfully, not only in the United States, but also in Japan.
This is not a long book, so it is ideal for a busy professional who needs a series of clear actions to help him or her. But despite its length, it is absolutely packed with useful ideas that you can put to immediate use, particularly if you are going to be involved in any kind of networking event.
Highly recommended.

Description:
We consider a model with a vertically integrated monopolist network provider who faces rival operators in the retail market. We examine the network operator's incentives for infrastructure investment. We find that investments are below the social optimum even when there is no regulation, and access price regulation further reduces investment incentives. We show that the underinvestment problem may have negative effects on the viability of competition. Access price regulation does not necessarily reduce the likelihood of foreclosure, and in the presence of regulation, rivals are most likely to be foreclosed when they would bring highest benefits to consumers.
