Book Description

Words and music for thirty-seven of the most beloved traditional lullabies are gathered in this lavishly illustrated songbook. From the enduring “Rock-a-Bye Baby” to the winsome “Brahms’ Lullaby” to the amusing “Little Boy Blue,” each song is thoughtfully matched with works of art from the Metropolitan Museum’s vast collections. Paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Mary Cassatt, a photograph by Eliot Porter of his infant son, and an Eskimo stone carving of a mother and child are among the many works that grace the pages of this stunning book.

4 out of 5 stars Mother's Little Helper.......2006-11-05

Mom or Dad would need an amazing vocal range to do justice the wide variety of material on this lovely collection. And it doesn't hurt baby to get an early introduction to good music.

These are not the optimal performances of the individual works, but it's a great start for a child's musical library.

5 out of 5 stars Lullabies, An Illustrated Songbook.......2005-07-25

Beautiful, lovely book of lullabies and incredible illustrations. Wonderful for gift-giving to new parents.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful collection.......2005-03-27

This collection is a "must have" for anyone who believes that music enhances both learning and bonding experiences for children of all ages.

I purchased this book and accompanying CD for my 5 month old son. Four months later, he still loves the music. My husband and I sing a few songs to him every night as part of his bed time ritual, and then we play a few songs from the CD when we tuck him in. There are also a few livelier pieces for daytime play. As I expected, my son is still a bit young to appreciate the artwork, but the diverse illustrations will make a nice learning tool later.

BTW- If you're bothered by the fact that the song order on the CD doesn't match that of the book, save it to your computer's hard drive, convert the files to MP3s, and change the order manually. Problem solved.

5 out of 5 stars Lush and lovely.......2002-03-30

This beautiful book has gorgeous slick illustrations from the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as clearly printed piano scoring to accompany the lullabies. It is by far the best book of its kind I've seen. I send it to every new baby on my list and hope it never goes out of print!

5 out of 5 stars Good if.......2001-08-06

Good if you would like to play lullabies, and the pictures are super. I like the tape of Golden Slumbers in the book section but its really songs, and better ones then are on Lullabies.

Book Description

This book is a guide to Perl 6 language features, as well as an advanced teaching guide for Perl 5. It’s the most up-to-date Perl book available. Examples are provided for both Perl 5 when using modules to back port Perl 6 features, and Perl 6 native examples. This book’s pragmatic approach shows you how to bootstrap new features onto the code you write day-to-day.

Perl 5 has long been missing important features but no agreement could be reached on the form they should take in the language, or even if they should be included. The announcement of the Perl 6 project has spurred development of Perl 5. As features are accepted into the Perl 6 design and Larry Wall finalizes the form it will take, many features are being added back into Perl 5. Perl 5.9, with opinional extensions from CPAN, hardly resembles the original Perl 5 language that first came out 9 years ago. Modern Perl is cleaner, more helpful, less error prone, more expressive, more scalable, and better suited to what people want to do in this day and age.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it's going to get.......2005-05-12

Perl 6 is pretty confusing no matter how you cut it. Scott does a nice job here of demonstrating the features of six. And he does it in a way that makes more sense than the Apocalypse stuff that Larry writes. If you are going to be using six as soon as it comes out then you will want to have a look at this in the meantime. It's the first book or article I have read that explains the new features in ways that I can understand.

4 out of 5 stars look at the advanced features.......2005-04-05

Walters presents his book for Perl 5 programmers, who might be eyeing Perl 6 and wondering if they should migrate. So the chapters are designed with the new Perl 6 features explicitly demarcated and usually at the start of each chapter. The book emphasises what is different about Perl 6.

But it is also more than for Perl 5 readers. The book can be read as a complete explanatory text on Perl 6 OR Perl 5, for someone who has never programmed in any version of Perl. It shows that Perl 6 is in part a competitive response by the Perl community to the presence and influence of other languages. Overall, this evolutionary pressure benefits you, as a Perl programmer, by giving you a more powerful language.

For me, the most interesting section was at the end. There's a nifty discussion of possible set operations, implemented in a simple syntax. Plus other more abstract computer science topics. Try exercising your imagination by perusing these pages, even if you can't see an immediate need for them in your coding.

Also - it was good form for Walters, in an earlier review, to say that he wished he could've blogged without rating his own book.

4 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2005-02-12

This is a clever, well-written book that will likely put your mind at ease if you are anxious about Perl 6. Scott makes interesting and intellegent comments, and provides good code samples. This book should appeal to Perl programmers of any skill level, and is not as dry as most programming books. An enjoyable read!

5 out of 5 stars Trivia and notes from the author.......2005-02-08

Hi everyone!

Here's some trivia you might not otherwise find, and then I'm going to try to clear up exactly what this book *is*.

25% of the royalties on sales of this title have been pledged to the Electronic Frountier Foundation and The Perl Foundation. These two organizations have shaped the world for the better for those of us who love to express ourselves creatively using computers and the 'Net. Being a hacker wouldn't be the same without cryptography or Perl.

http://perl6now.com has a sample chapter, Multidimensional Arrays, which talks about PDL, the Perl Data Language, and doing vectorized operations on light weight, storage efficient large arrays. It also has all of the frontmatter including the Introduction and detailed Table of Contents. The Introduction is the best explanation of the book. There's also a link to my blog and other goodies.

Perl steals madly from other languagers (and always has); Perl 6 stole the coolest batch of features yet; _Perl 6 Now_ introduces these bizarre, alien, potent ideas using Perl 5 CPAN implementations and nearly 800 code listings.

First, it's a decidedly a Perl 5 book. It's about language features recently introduced in Perl 5, language features implemented as CPAN modules that intentionally or coincidentally parallel Perl 6's new features, and it's about advanced use of Perl 5's features to do things that Perl 6 tries to streamline or generalize to put into common reach. Perl 6's syntax will make learning Perl easier for novices but learning a new syntax just plain isn't that interesting to most of us. There are Perl 6 syntax examples but these are secondary to the introduction of the idea that spurred the change. Every idea included has a Perl 5 implementation. There is no hand-waving. Everything works in Perl 5 and everything is relavent to Perl 5. Making so many of Perl 6's ideas work on Perl 5 is no small task - this book contains hundreds of hacks, module demonstrations, tricks, and so on. This isn't a book on Parrot and it's not a book on PONIE (yet, though hopefully a second edition will do better). It only teaches how to incorporate the best parts of most of the languages on Earth to write some seriously mental Perl. If you enjoyed _Object Oriented Perl_, this book is for you.

-scott

P.S.: I wish I could blog here without rating the book, but I can't. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for early adopters of Perl 6.......2005-01-24

This book simplifies the transition from coding in Perl 5 to coding in Perl 6. Common elements and themes between the two languages are demonstrated, along with an introduction to the advances found in Perl 6. Scott outlines a vast set of features using specific examples easily understood by Perl programmers of all levels.
Scott also uses humor throughout to make this Perl 6 guide a fun read. I especially enjoyed an example using pet washing to illustrate type checking (Type Safety chapter)! The expert's voice indeed - I hope we see more books from Mr. Walters.

This is a very good book for those who want to learn how to sing and learn how to teach others how to sing. There are many wonderful insights and excercises in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A very fine method to learn to sing.......2006-01-04

I was very fortunate to find Larra years ago. To study with her was quite an experience. She was like no other. I highly recommend her techniques, especially for those who have problems as I did when I came to see her. She could fix problems like magic. I would never rely on a book like this alone though. Use it as a guide to what a good teacher should be doing. The best part about this technique as others have stated, is how natural it is. That is the best way to avoid problems now and in the future.

Larra could still sing beautifully well into her 80's after a long worldwide career. This alone attests to her ability to keep the voice in good health with her methods for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars A truly great book on voice training.......2003-07-23

This book has so much information I don't know where to start. The author was one of the greats as far as teaching voice and her students have gone on to sing professionally in very demanding capacities without vocal injuries and with beautiful sound - and isn't that what vocal training is all about?

There is a chapter on basic care of the voice - stuff I never knew in 8 years of lessons - don't subject yourself to radical changes in temperature, don't use numbing sprays in your throat, etc. There is another chapter on what to do for vocal nodes, another deals with diction (that chapter alone improved my tone and changed the responation to more in the mask - it was amazing).

For the voice teacher, there are exercises for developing a healthy technique in the students. It covers from beginning to advanced and there are some great chapters on breathing and Alexander Technique - which is taught at most of the Conservatories as a part of the training of serious students of voice. Very informative and has some good resources listed for further research.

Like the guy said in teh review of the previous edition, these books are not bound very well but he woujldn't be so upset about that if it wasn't one of those books you have to keep referring to because the information is so good. If it was a lesser book, then he wouldn't want to open it every 5 minutes and it wouldn't matter what the binding was like.

Book Description

The Illustrated Voice is the first book to examine and reveal, in great detail, the thinking process behind the creation of conceptual illustrations. Craig Frazier, its author, offers a unique perspective. He has had a 20-year career as an award-winning graphic designer, followed by a 7-year career as an internationally recognized illustrator. His point-of-view is from the trenches of contemporary illustration, backed with the knowledge and experience of the world of graphic design. The Illustrated Voice displays a substantial body of finished illustrations and preliminary sketches, organized by topics relating to theory, process and type of assignment. Frazier provides the "visual thinking" behind some of his most-published work, including doodles and sketches never presented to his clients. Each illustration is accompanied by text exploring the nature of the assignment and the rationale behind his ideas and decisions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book for illustrators and designers........2003-11-07

This book is wonderful- So much illustration today is all about technique and this is one of the only books about illustration that teaches conceptual thinking and stresses the importance of communicaton. The full colour illustration is absolutely stunning and there are wonderful sketches that show his concept development. Absolute must for students studying design or illustration. Also, The writer Craig Frazier was a successful designer before becoming a full time illustrator and it really shows in his work. He writes beautifully and is very sincere in explaining his philosophy about illustration, design, logo development, poster design- can't say enough great hings about this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why, it's fantastic!.......2000-07-26

Who would have guessed that such a simple, straightfoward musical would be the longest running show in New York history? Read this copy of the libretto, and you'll know why. The show is very simple and very honest. It has drama and lighthearted comedy in just the right amounts to create what is, in many ways, the perfect musical. This volume also contains lots of extra information about the show, including the lyrics to a new song written for the show in its later years, and a number of photos. The music is missing, of course, but even without the OCR to the show, you get a great sense here of what makes The Fantasticks so, well, fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars No Woder It's the Longest Running Show in American History!.......2000-06-08

It never fails to amaze me that Jones & Schmidt were capable of such powerful poetry while still studying for their masters degrees. This thesis show is a powerhouse of simplicity and a panorama of minimalism. Sound oxymoronic? It is. The show is so disceptively simple, but the stories it tells are universal, and they are guaranteed to ring true for even the most tarnished audience member. One read, and it won't be hard to "try to remember" this show for a long time!

5 out of 5 stars The most wonderful musical ever!.......2000-03-27

This is one of the most wonderful musicals ever. It has a wonderful story and plot but the best part about it is the music. The music is absolutely FANTASTICK! The musical contains a wide variety of songs, each with its own mood and purpose. There are funny and amuzing songs, ominous songs, loving songs, wishful songs... there's something for everybody. I first saw the Fantasticks in New York and fell in love with the music. I have almost all the songs completely memorized and I am working on putting a few of the song into my audition repertoire. This is music that every true musical fan should have. Its brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing look at the long life of The Fantasticks........1998-09-02

It has been two years since I was first introduced to The Fantasticks. Ever since I saw the show I have been captivated by its remarkable story, lyrics, and music. It was only recently that I read this 30th anniversary edition and truly found out how amazing this show is.

Tom Jones' personal account of The Fantasticks shows the reader what exactly goes in to a show before it actually debuts. The first section "Try to Remember" is well set as the first chapter of the book. The reader will benefit more from reading this chapter before the show.

The third section (the second was the libretto) is a look at the actors really shows you the life of the longest running Off-Broadway show.

I know my words cannot do justice to this amazing book. I would recommend this book to any die-hard Fantasticks fan, or to anyone interested in getting to know the best musical ever written.

My three-year-old son loves this true to life book. What mother hasn't yelled at her child? We need stories that help children learn to cope with the emotional turbulence that is part and parcel of caring for young children, balancing career and family, etc., etc. This story fills that need and helps mom and child reconcile and grow together. Emotions aren't swept under the rug in this book.

Book Description

Art Constitution: The Illustrated Constitution of the Russian Federation is a collaborative project reflecting the individuality of more than 100 artists of different generations. Art Constitution, composed entirely of works from the last 10 years (the period when this Constitution has been in effect), allows us to trace the evolution and to see the complete spectrum of contemporary Russian art through the illustration of each of the Constitution's 137 articles. The Art Constitution brings together artists who began their careers during Khrushchev's "Thaw" and others who first distinguished themselves in the post-Soviet period, all of whom now enjoy the opportunities and challenges of artistic freedom in the new Russia. The book's 137 color plates represent virtually all the artistic trends and movements of the second half of the 20th century.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Irony Evidences Democracy.......2004-09-02

Paradoxically, the first constitution in Russia appeared in 1918, soon after the violent and anti-democratic Bolshevik revolution. Previous attempts at establishing a constitutional democracy include the 1825 Decembrists' revolt, the Manifest of 1905 which granted to the population basic civil rights, and the Fundamental Laws of the State of 1906. In 1924, after the formation of the Soviet Union, the first Constitution of the USSR was adopted. In 1936 the Stalin Constitution took effect. In 1977 the Brezhnev Constitution became law. These documents all granted great freedoms to the individual, but were mere words on paper. The Brezhnev Constitution was in effect until the adaptation of the Constitution of the Russian Federation in 1993.

One hundred thirty-seven different illustrations, each an artistic interpretation of the 137 Articles of the post-Soviet Constitution of 1993, honor the Constitution's 10th Anniversary.. More than 100 artists of different generations, from the post-Stalin "Thaw" years to the present, democratic times, participated in Art Constitution: The Illustrated Constitution of the Russian Federation, the project of Ivan Kolesnikov, Sergei Denisov, and Petr Vois, along with Zurab Tsereteli (President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Director of the Moscow Modern Art Museum, and distinguished sculptor) and Natalia Kolodzei (Executive Director of the Kolodzei Art Foundation and co-owner of one of the world's largest private art collections). The project, comprised entirely of works from the last 10 years, enables the spectator to trace the evolution and view the complete spectrum of contemporary Russian art through the illustration of each of the Constitution's Articles.

Artists' participation in the political life of Russia has a long history. One of the most vivid examples is the brief history of the relationship of the Russian Avant-Garde and the printed word, when the graphic arts were considered an integral part of visual art. Despite utopian ideas and anarchical moods, books of pre-1914 were designed for a narrow circle of people and had no great political effect. With the Revolution in 1917, when the former counterculture for a short time became recognized as the official cultural elite, utopian ideas in the works by Alexandre Rodchenko, El Lissitzky, and Gustav Klucis turned into concrete form. Now approached as ideological tools, books became graphically more logical and symmetrical.

After the death of Lenin in 1924 and the emergence of the Stalin dictatorship, diversity in graphic design and illustration diminished. The Communist Party, by then the only arbitrator of culture, called for an art "comprehensible to the millions." Abstraction was disfavored, and, to eliminate traces of personal touch in a collective art, photography became the prescribed source for images. In the hands of artists like Lissitzky, Klucis, Rodchenko, and Varvara Stepanova it was put to brilliant use. Lissitzky even managed to give Stalinist propaganda some flair: the subject of his 1934 photomontage of Red Army maneuvers is chilling, but it is hard not to admire its striking design. The very year Lissitzky produced this work, Socialist Realist was decreed the only acceptable aesthetic style. Some artists complied, others fled to Europe, while many vanished in government purges. The Russian Avant-Garde was finished, and with it the thrilling tradition of artist's books had come to a halt.

The First Illustrated Constitution of the Russian Federation unites living artists who began their careers during Khrushchev's Thaw and the artists who started their careers in the post-Soviet period, all of whom now enjoy the benefit and challenge of artistic freedom in the new Russia. It is important to note the individuality of each work, and of each artist, incorporated in one project. Photographs by Vlad Mamyshev-Monro, Tatiana Antoshina, and Oleg Kulik, constructivist design and photomontages by Sergei Denisov and Ivan Kolesnikov, SotsArt allusions by Boris Orlov, an illustration in neo-primitivist style by Andrei Karpov, Andrei Bilzho's comics, conceptual projects by Farid Bogdalov, Komar & Melamid -- almost all the artistic trends and movements of the second half of the 20th century are represented. These 137 illustrations represent different aspects of the Russian art and views of the Russian life.

It is important to note that such a project as this is possible in Russia only since the adaptation of the 1993 Constitution, when the artist freely and, ironically, sometimes very sharply, can create their own illustrations. Juxtaposition of an illustration on one page facing a page with its associated Article creates a special atmosphere - a new way of reading. By participation in this project, the artist, a citizen of the Russian Federation, reflects on the past ten years of the existence (and the implications) of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, thinking back to the optimism embodied by this document and forward to the realities (both good and bad) of present-day society.

3 out of 5 stars A Feminist Take On Mae West.......2006-11-25

Ramona Curry's "Too Much of a Good Thing: Mae West as Cultural Icon," published in 1996, is a university press publication that examines Mae West's contributions to the Feminist Movement and evaluates her role as a female icon of the twentieth century. This treatment of West is a typical academic text with good research of textual sources, but with little or no interviews and featuring theory that is hit or miss.
When Mae West was asked why she never wrote an article supporting the Feminist Movement she reportably drawled, "They never asked me."

2 out of 5 stars Pretentious silly book on a legend.......1998-08-07

This is a fairly ridiculous, heavy handed attempt at analyzing the appeal of one of the greatest movie stars ever. This writer sees everything about Mae as "camp" (wait til you read her detailed analysis of La West's appearance on MISTER ED!!) and although she seems pro-West, apparently sees her mainly as someone who gays to copy and idolize, not as a serious pop culture icon for the mainstream public. Super silly and very heavy handed. Beulah, peel me a raspberry!!!
