Book Description
In this scholarly and deeply considered work, the author documents his provocative thesis that Judaism is not the religion of the Old Testament, but the newly formalized belief system of the Pharisees, which arose in Babylon with the commitment of the formerly oral tradition of the elders to writing, in the wake of the crucifixion of Israel's Messiah and the destruction of the Temple.
Basing his findings on authoritative Judaic sources, Hoffman demonstrates that Judaism is a man-made religion of tradition and superstition, which represents the institutionalized nullification of Biblical law and doctrine.
Liberating the reader from the accumulated shackles of decades of misinformation, this book shows that Judaism's God is not the God of Israel, but the strange gods of Talmud and Kabbalah, and the racial self-worship they inculcate.
Making a relentless case with massive documentation and a lapidary attention to detail, Judaism's Strange Gods constitutes a shocking and original revelation about a subject we thought we knew only too well.

Finally!!.......2007-04-14
Finally someone had the guts to write this book. Absolutely amazing and well written.
Conspiracy Theorist.......2006-07-14
Simply type Hoffman's name into Google and discover that he's an amateur conspiracy theory blowhard. Hoffman recycles middle age Christian Anti-semitic myths about the Talmud here and thinks he's being original. For those who don't know: the Talmud is the Jewish commentary on the Hebrew Bible, it was never meant to replace it, it simply elucidates it. Saying Jews don't keep the Bible is like saying Christians don't either because they have a New Testament. We are, in fact, the only people on earth who are still faithful to the Hebrew Bible (old testament) as being the only revelation of G-d, one that never has been replaced. The Talmud simply tells us what the Bible means and elaborates on its laws. For example, the Bible says only to rest on the Sabbath, and the Talmud says rest is defined by not plowing, reaping, nothing creative etc. The Bible says an eye for an eye, and the Talmud says this is only meant figuratively. Many enlightenment figures like Milton and Locke and even John Adams studied Talmud to better understand the Bible. Hoffman thinks he makes a ground breaking discovery by telling us there are some statements in the 2 thousand year old massive enclyclopedia of the Talmud that aren't in tune with modern values. Hey Mike, think there are any Christian texts from that long ago that say weird things too? (like kill or non-believers, witches ie-women, blacks are inferior etc.) What Jew haters do is take something that's universal (like intolerance in ancient religious texts, or the fact that Israel isn't perfect as no country is) and highlight it as if it's unique to Jews alone, and this gives Jews some special cosmic sort of evil. This all resulted from early Christianity's attempt to seperate themselves from their Jewish roots and portray Judaism as evil, and itself as the replacement. Many Jews responded by viewing Christianity as evil and idolotrous. Nowadays of course, enlightened jews and christians realize they share more in common than people thought in the dark ages. Hoffman still lives in the dark ages. If Hoffman himself is Jewish, as his name seems to imply, he suffers from the age old mental disease known as self hatred. If not, he clearly is someone who's obssesed with Jews and Judaism and I guess I'm flattered but while Hoffman spends his every waking minute obssesing over the power and influence and mytique of the Jews I assure you none of us has ever payed more than one laughing minute being concerned over him or anyone like him. Long after he's dead and gone and his books collecting dust Jews will continue to study the Bible and the Talmud. Orthodox Jews are, in fact, the most direct line of tradition still maintaining the ancient Biblical tradition with all its laws from before Christianity came and said the laws of sabath and rituals don't apply anymore etc. If Jesus were alive today, he'd probably feel most at home in an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, because that most represents the kind of Judaism he grew up with (many scholars say this).
Very Good, though short and concise. Easy to digest for anybody new to subject matter (I am not new to it however).......2006-02-04
I sent Mr. Hoffman, a fine Revisionist from Idaho
the 29 volumes of the Soncino Talmud and another
book written for an intelligent lay jewish readership
and both of these are sited in the bibliography. The
only thing that could have made this book better
would have been to copy the offencive anti-Christian
pages of the The Talmud in the English language
whihc would have increased the books size. A strong
effort! Way to go Mike II!!
A complete Fraud.......2005-12-28
Having now read the words of this writer, it is truly shocking that even one person on this planet could possibly find some truth in what he has said.
Torah/Talmud presents a single unit of truth. Hoffman stands quite ready and willing to advocate the extermination of a people who have done so much to bring civilization and morality to humanity. The Talmud has nothing to say about Christ. The Talmud has a few things to say about the early Christian religion and all of it negative. So what? Might there be some other possible reaction? Please, Jews do not kill Christians.
Of course, by contrast, the whole history of Christianity has witnessed a good deal of real life murder against so many thousands of innocent Jewish victims. Yes, we would very happily prefer that Christians treated Jews without contempt and said a couple of paragraphs of negative talk against us instead of killing us. But the whole theological history of Christianity is loaded with contempt against Judaism--kill the Jews and they remove the witness people. What could be worse than claiming that the messiah came, he was a Jew and the Jews, in their wickedness, murdered him? Is it somehow justified to wipe out the very people who gave you everything positive in your theological lexicon?
Fortunately, Christians in America are very pro-Jew and Early Americans loved the Jewish people. This is why we have made such a happy home in America. Hoffman and other Jew haters will not convince enough that the Jews are something other than we actually are. Mr. Hoffman is such an obvious liar, I cannot believe that seemingly civil people applaud his writing.
That Talmud is in large part a writing of the Oral Law given to the Jewish people at Mt. Sinai. Indeed, God told us not to write it down. Anyone can look at the Talmud and see what it is: an extended description of the written words of the Torah, a detailed explanations of the laws, a philosophical debate of the practical implications of some of the laws. Surely, this is much more than 99% of the Talmud.
Ironically, much of Christianity was ripped off from the Talmud and Judaism is the moral basis of Christianity. This obviously disturbs Mr. Hoffman. So what can he do? Say that the Christians ARE the Jews and the Jews are not the Jews!! We are Khuzars instead (92%!!) This comes as news to us and to all other historians who have studied the Jewish people so extensively.
Talmud requires a detailed knowledge of Torah and classical sources. One cannot simply run to the library and read bits cold and come to correct conclusions. I do not mean to say that the Talmud means something other than it says. I simply wish to point out that the words cannot be comprehended without initiation. Is this unusual or problematic? Why? I know a bit of Shakespeare but not enough to understand the depth and hidden meanings, the associations, the puns, etc. Forgive me, Talmud is a bit more detailed than Shakespeare.
I deplore the ADL and I criticize them all the time. I do not call people names like antisemites without real cause. In this case, the ADL has it right. If Hoffman is not an antisemite, I will give away my house and all that I own. This book is complete and total fraud without question and has no merit.
Ignorance is evident on the cover.......2005-11-07
The very cover of the book yells out "ignoramus"! As anyone who has learned classical Jewish texts (ie Talmud, Midrash etc. or any text for that matter) will tell you - context is everything. From the very cover and throughout the book the author misquotes, misinterprets and distorts classic texts as he tries to pull together the weakest of threads in order to make a case to malign Judaism and its adherents.
Book Description
Across the United States, Jews come together every week to sing and pray in a wide variety of worship communities. Through this music, made by and for ordinary folk, these worshippers define and re-define their relationship to the continuity of Jewish tradition and the realities of American life. Combining oral history with an analysis of recordings, The Lord's Song in a Strange Land examines this tradition incontemporary Jewish worship and explores the diverse links between the music and both spiritual and cultural identities. Alive with detail, the book focuses on metropolitan Boston and covers the full range of Jewish communities there, from Hasidim to Jewish college students in a transdenominational setting. It documents a remarkably fluid musical tradition, where melodies are often shared, where sources can be as diverse as Sufi chant, Christmas carols, rock and roll, and Israeli popular music, and where the meaning of a song can change from one block to the next. The Lord's Song in a Strange Land is the first volume in Oxford's new American Musicspheres series. Featuring a CD of field recordings for many of the songs discussed, the book will prove an invaluable guide for a wide range of scholars and students of ethnomusicology and religion.

A Mindless Activity Becomes a Searching for the Sacred.......2006-11-13
STRANGE RITUAL is a color-saturated photographic journey made over years by David Byrne, a musician and artist whose work may be considered on the edge but whose thoughts have a centered sense that suggests seers. First of all, try to get the hard copy of this book as it stands up to the repeated perusings it evokes from the reader/observer.
A lavish photographic mélange with superimposed bits and pieces of poignant thoughts and poetic like arrangements of words, STRANGE RITUALS by the author's own admission began as a mindless activity, capturing photographs of 'religious artifacts, shop window displays, isolated structures in the landscape, hotel and airport room details, the public writing of 'lunatics', books, bungalows, performing chairs, faded signs, and spot-lit objects', all of which when viewed through his camera lens (and in retrospect) 'seem to be searching for the sacred'. 'When something makes us feel strange it often makes us feel good too...Strange = Good'.
Byrne traveled the world (Ireland, India, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Germany, Portugal, Israel, Turkey, America, Mexico, Argentina, etc) capturing richly colorful images that arrest the viewer's mind and plead for explanation...at first reading. Then, after reading the author's thoughts and an interview with Creative Camera's Chris Titterington, the focus of the book changes and it becomes more an experience than a curiosity. Much of the impact of the book is due to the design of Gary Koepke and the production assistance by Sarah Caplan and Robin Weiss. The result: an endlessly fascinating trek through images that make us pause and re-evaluate our own concept of the meaning and importance of Ritual. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 06
Unexpected photos.......2003-01-10
Never in my life did I think I would enjoy looking at pictures of a chair turned on its various sides - but it works. As with all of Byrne's art, you see something photographed that you never thought of as a model for an art piece. Byrne's eye for detail and cunning sense of "capturing the right shot" works well in the book. A must-have for any Byrne fan and a must-see for those interested in clever photography.

Pictographic Melody.......1999-02-14
Strange Rituals is just that; a study by David Byrne of how we look at the world, see the divine in the strange and take joy from it. Overall the free verse that accompaines the pictures adds to the books attraction. Some are stories, others seem meaningless. But this is David Byrne after all.... If you like his music buy it - otherwise only if your into umm... Strange Things :)
