Book Description

The Most Comprehensive Monograph on the Legendary AmericanPhotographer Ever Published. Francesca Woodman created her first photograph at thirteen and took her ownlife at age 22. She left behind a hauntingly beautiful legacy.Flailing, groveling, jumping, and hiding--often dissolving into a blur before thecamera--she used her body as an actor in a mysterious drama. In less thana decade Woodman created a body of work that has secured her position asone of the most original American artists of the 1970s, and the first-everchild prodigy of photography.FRANCESCA WOODMAN by Chris Townsend, is the most comprehensive book on thelegendary artist ever published, as well as the only monograph in print.Woodman has become one of the most talked about, studied and influentialphotographers of the late twentieth century. She brought an understandingof Baroque painting, Modernist art and contemporary post-minimalistpractice to her evocative, sensual self-portraits.This survey features250 images--many of which have never been exhibited or published before--aswell as unpublished extracts from her journals selected by her fatherGeorge Woodman to provide a glimpse into her private world.New researchby art historian, Chris Townsend, examines the influences of gothicliterature, surrealism, feminism and post-minimalist art on Woodman'sphotographs.Woodman played complex games of hide-and-seek with her camera. Constructing enigmas that trap our gaze, her work conjures the precariousmoment between adolescence and adulthood, between presence and absence. She depicts herself seemingly fading into a flat plane, merging with thewall under the peeling wallpaper, dissolving into the floor, or flatteningherself behind shards of glass.Fascinated by transformation and thepermeability of seemingly fixed boundaries, Woodman constantly compares thefragility of her own body with the physical environment around her.Herimages read as a diary--sharing both her imagination and her body. Art critic Arthur Danto said of Woodman's photographs, "It is impossible toview her work without being drawn into the vast questions it raises aboutlife, art and the meaning and embodiment of sex. . . . Her work unfoldsover time like the oeuvre of a brilliant and precocious poet, like Keats orRimbaud, whose voice is present in every line."The release of personal records by the Woodman family along with personalmemories of the artist by Betsy Berne, one of her closest friends, adds apowerful dimension to this extraordinary monograph.FRANCESCA WOODMANprovides a fascinating window into the world of this exceptional talent.Phaidon would like to thank Betty and George Woodman, her parents, fortheir help and close involvement at all stages of this publication.

5 out of 5 stars Francesca Woodman.......2007-04-03

Excellent book, I saw a lot of prints in this book that I hadn't seen anywhere else considering I dont live near any of the galleries her works displayed in. And the price was much better than the $350 i've seen elsewhere, and I didnt have to wait forever to ship. I'd do business with this company again, very much worth my money.

4 out of 5 stars Art Criticism - what is it good for?.......2007-03-20

I, personally, like Francesca Woodman's photographs and they are well represented in this book. It's a lovely, big, heavy, think-paged, glossy, pretty book with a giant gold F and W on the front and back cover (under the paper sleeve). I found the commentary at the back by her father and Betsy Berne to be informative, interesting, and helpful and enjoyed looking over the selection of her journal entries they included. It makes it much easier to read her writing when you know that she self-consciously chose an affected style. Actually, I thought Betsy Bernes' three page letter was better written than most of the book and certainly more believable. But I do have a tendency to raise a questioning eye-brow at a lot of the sorts of things that art critics seem to find so very important, obvious, or interesting. For instance, I've never really been on board with this whole obsession of turning every object or juxtaposition into a metaphor for the camera. It's practically Freudian, the connections are so stretched sometimes. Yes, I actually read the 70 page essay on her work and, to give it credit, it was thorough and pretty well organized with lots of examples in the margins of her contemporaries' work and that of her influences. I did learn a lot about her life and the context in which she grew up and made her art and about how very much she may have intended to say with each piece. But I do say 'may have' quite purposefully. Read the text with a grain of salt and you can get a lot out of this book. And, of course, the pictures make it worth it.

2 out of 5 stars Potential for Greatness.......2006-12-04

Ms. Woodman's photographs are no different than hundreds being turned out in art classes everyday. They do, however, present a consistent body of work that with the continued intellectual growth of their author, could have made contribution the world of photography. We have been denied this growth curve and that is sad.

I really love this book it's so nice to finally have a book of Francesca Woodmans work I can actually afford. Francesca Woodman was a prodigy genius and her pictures go way beyond photography she did something very special. I wish though that they published more work that I haven't seen if there are 800 pictures why do they keep reproducing the same ones? Also seeing her journal entries inside the book was amazing that would be a book right there her journals. Overall the book is beautiful the pictures are printed in very good quality.

5 out of 5 stars Francesca Woodman, tragic loss........2001-11-04

This book is an excellent collection of the limited work of a young woman who would have dominated American Photography had it not been for her unfortunate demise. It is essential for all serious art photographers
I first saw a retrospective show of her work in Boulder Colorado after her death and it has never left my mind. I find it hard to believe that it has taken this long for a published collection like this to come along.
It is truly remarkable in every way.

5 out of 5 stars Photos that pierce one's heart with a sweet, impossible ache.......2001-03-14

However remarkable and achingly tender, Woodman images are as rare as a rhinoserous horn at an Asian bazaar. Some years ago a portfolio of Woodman photographs was reprinted. This small handfull of images was reproduced again and again. The group of "known" images grew somewhat as various small books or catalogs were published. The real strength of Woodman as an artist is evidenced by the fact that as every heretofore unseen image gets published, such as in this sizable book, the delicacy, richness, and complexity of Woodman's moltenly beautiful yet hauntingly tragic body of work grows exponentially. The original group of oft-reproduced images is revealed as random sampling of many images of the same captivating quality. There is so much that is not known about this work that each expanded treatment becomes a startling revelation. Gracious thanks to any book that begins to give this most underappreciated genuis suicide her due.

5 out of 5 stars At last, a well-printed, definitive book of the work of FW........1998-11-03

As a long time admirer of Francesca Woodman's photography, I was thrilled that this long-overdue retrospective monograph was printed. There have been a few other books on her work, but the work shown in them seemed limited and edited to support the critical essays that were also part of those books. This new book is printed very well, and gives the viewer a more well-rounded view of what the late photographer was up to when she made photographs. Though her life was short, Woodman's creations are full of depth and challenge the viewer. This book is a must for anyone who appreciates the work of Woodman, and I would highly recommend it to those who enjoy photographs that are thought-provoking, introspective, surrealist, personal, and so much more.

Taking its title from Deleuze, this exhibition and catalogue consider the body linguistically. In what sense do bodies produce language, how are they themselves grasped and defined by it, and what spaces for action are opened up by this understanding? With art by John Baldessari, Allan Kaprow, Mary Kelly, Francesca Woodman, and others.

4 out of 5 stars Woodman is worth the search.......2003-11-06

This book is the companion to the 1986 exhibition of Francesca Woodman's photography at Wesley Colleg Museum and Hunter College Art Gallery. Woodman's work is incredibly powerful. A photographic prodigy, she imbued her work with insight, power, longing and sorrow. Her imagery of herself calls forth important discussions of meaning and value of what it is to be a woman, feminity, otherness and exclusion. By the time of her death at 22 in 1978, Woodman had created a compelling body of work that cannot be ignored by anyone looking for non-political interpretations of the reality of the feminine. The accompanying catalogue essay by Abigail Solomon-Godeau is helpful in that it places Woodman's work within a philosophical, critical and theoritical framework. Too bad this book is out of print. If you find a copy, snatch it up.

                Book Description

When should government intervene in market activity? When is it best to let market forces simply take their natural course? How does existing empirical evidence about government performance inform those decisions? Brookings economist Clifford Winston uses these questions to frame a frank empirical assessment of government economic intervention in Government Failure vs. Market Failure: Microeconomics Policy Research and Government Performance.

Markets "fail" when it is possible to make one person better off without making someone else worse off, thus indicating some degree of inefficiency. In economics parlance, Pareto optimality has not been achieved. On the other hand, governments "fail" when an economic intervention proves to be unwarranted, either because markets are performing adequately or public policy does not correct a market failure efficiently. In such cases, government intervention may actually exacerbate a problem or produce unintended negative results. Winston concludes that the cost of government failure may actually be considerably greater than the cost of market failure: "My search of the evidence is not limited to policy failures. I will report success stories, but few of them emerged." Government failure may result in missed opportunities, wasted resources, and waning public support.

The author, a well-respected economist who edited the Brookings Papers on Microeconomic Activity, calls for more economics research that is geared to questions of public policy: "The economics profession should encourage a broader range as well as different styles of research by giving more respect to high-quality policy studies on specific and perhaps small issues that accumulate in importance." He cites evidence that inefficient microeconomics policies are of vital importance because they are a drag on growth and development.

Written by Clifford Winston (senior fellow in Economic Studies, Brookings Institution), Government Failure Versus Market Failure: Microeconomics Policy Research and Government Peformance examines three decades of empirical evidence in search of the answers to a critical question: When should government intervene in market activity, and when is it better to allow market forces to operate without interference? Chapters discuss such topics as antitrust regulations, policies intended to correct market failures, common Achilles heels of social goals policies, and much more. Drawing heavily upon the accumulated data, Government Failure Versus Market Failure strives to give today's economic policymakers and politicians recommendations for optimal success in future strategies to promote optimal well being both in terms of social and free-market interests. Highly recommended.

                  Book Description

As the Internet revolution continues to unfold and transform telecommunications, pressure is building for faster, less expensive, and more widely accessible broadband service. Such a development would facilitate improved and less expensive traditional applications such as voice telephony and web browsing. It would also enable new and useful applications such as Internet-based television, videoconferencing, and software distribution. Broadband has great potential to improve efficiency and productivity, even to improve national security in some cases. Broadband service and affordability, however, have consistently lagged well behind demand and progress in information technology, with damaging results. The Internet revolution remains incomplete and threatens to stagnate if the situation continues.

In The Broadband Problem, economist and technology entrepreneur Charles H. Ferguson explains the causes and ramifications of this damaging bottleneck, and he offers suggestions on improving the current state of affairs. He asserts that current telecommunications law and policy have not provided sufficient levels of new entry, competition, and innovation in the local telecom market. The continuing dominance of ILECs (incumbent local exchange carriers) in that market impedes the healthy, and much-needed, development of an efficient broadband market. The result of these policy and market failures is inadequate technological progress, innovation, and productivity in advanced Internet services and telecommunication services generally.

The broadband problem is holding us back, and thus must be addressed and solved. With this important volume, Charles Ferguson has contributed mightily to that mission.

                    Book Description

A global wave of reform is fundamentally reshaping the role of the state in national economies. This book provides a fresh and accessible perspective on the political economy of this megatrend. It traces the theoretical roots of the reforms to developments in public economics which emphasize problems of government rather than market failure. It then breaks new ground in developing an economic theory of leadership to explain how policy leadership networks can strive to influence the direction of reform processes.

This book critiques the attention generally placed on government failures in economic crises. Bhalla tunrs to the market, exploring corporate failures which occur in both public and private spheres. These may be due to lapses in implementation of policies and programs. Book Description

Natural ecosystems like wetlands and forests fulfill important environmental functions, while at the same time making significant contributions to OECD economies. Efficient management of natural resources depends on the appropriate valuation of the benefits and costs associated with their use. Markets often fail to reflect either the full social value of using these resources or the full social costs of their degradation. Inappropriate policy interventions by governments may reinforce these "market failures" or may lead to other forms of policy distortion of their own. This report illustrates some of the problems encountered in determining the optimum mix of market forces and government policies in managing wetlands and forests, and suggests how governments could intervene more effectively to get the prices right.

In recent years, technological change, unemployment and industrial restructuring have highlighted training and the acquisition of skills as a policy issue. Throughout the industrialized world there is widespread concern that employees are insufficiently skilled. This deficiency can have serious economic consequences, reflected in excessive unemployment, meager growth, impeded competitiveness, excessive wages, insufficient innovation, and deficient product quality. This volume, from the Centre for Economic Policy Research, provides a systematic account of all the major market failures in the area of skills acquisition.

From the author: Congressional authority to enact environmental legislation has been called into question by recent Supreme Court cases suggesting that Commerce Clause regulation is valid only if Congress is regulating economic activity. This Note proposes a market failure approach to guide the new economic inquiry. Under this approach, statutes that correct market failures should be understood as economic in nature. The proposed approach draws on the insights of environmental economics to explain how environmental regulation targets market failures, and it supports upholding environmental statutes--in particular, the Endangered Species Act--as a permissible exercise of Commerce Clause authority.
