I found this book a little disappointing. If you already have a basic knowledge of Colour theory and know about CMYK & RGB, raster and vector images then this book may be too basic for you. It has173 pages with about 36 in colour. I found this quite annoying particularly when the author was talking about the effect of colour in a screenshot and the page is printed in black and white (grayscale) - so you can't see what he is talking about unless you go to the website yourself.

I learned some new things but I don't think it is enough to rate this book any higher than a 3.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book from a Great Teacher/Mentor/Friend.......2005-11-03

Hi Jeremey thank you and all affliated with the design and information provided in the book! For those who don't know Jeremey was a teacher at my college, Virginia College in Birmingham. He really helped me convey my inner thoughts of how to actually create something. I was stuck in design limbo for a long time till his teachings changed my life forever! To all involved with the work on this title it is our first book and hopefully we will have many more from VC our students and teachers are some of the best! Congrats!

5 out of 5 stars The Gap Is FINALLY Filled!!.......2005-10-11

I teach web design at a community college. Our biggest teaching issues aren't technology skills -- most students pick those up easily, and there are literally hundreds of technical books around to help -- but design skills. It's very hard to make a group of technology students care about color, type, and all the details that make a page communicate visually. There are other books that attempt to fill this gap (Robin Williams spring to mind) but no book has really done it WELL. This book has. I was worried asking my students to buy 'yet another' textbook with costs skyrocketing, but this book is a worthwhile investment. If you don't understand design basics is the place to start.

It took me two years to write this book.
If you do not understand basic design principles this is the right book for you.

      Book Description

This introduction to designing high-impact websites shows how to combine an understanding of design principles with the right images and the right authoring software to create visually compelling Web sites that offer a first-rate user experience. In a highly practical approach, the reader is introduced to essential features of basic programs of Web design-Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash plus HTML-as well as how these programs interact with the Web design features of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Unlike the many software books that devote in-depth coverage to just one of these programs, Exploring the Art and Technology of Web Design takes the holistic approach designers need to succeed in a client-driven work environment, delivering a thorough understanding of ALL of the elements that go into great web design. An examination of key related topics-vector and pixel images, FTP programs, simple digital audio and video-editing software-contributes to the development of both a technological understanding of the software and a conceptual understanding of the design principles that lead to the creation of striking Web sites.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Covers design and tools like few other books.......2007-06-25

What I liked about this book is that it describes the set of design principles used in web pages, and covers the set of tools typically used, starting out with a basic text editor, then moving on to Dreamweaver, then Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. It even covers site management and FTP.

The book reminded me of the best "desktop publishing" books of the mid-1990's, which covered the concepts of design, layout, fonts, needs of different audiences, and then had a series of projects using PageMaker. The days of using just one program are long since gone, yet few books today describe how to get the desired results out of the different programs.

My main concern with the book is that it didn't indicate what versions of the tools were being used, or if that was important. For instance, is it Dreamweaver MX 2004, Dreamweaver 8, or Dreamweaver CS3? I reconstructed the screens to conclude that the book focuses on tools as of 2003-2005, but now that Adobe has bought Macromedia, the deck has been shuffled again, so keep that in mind.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book........2006-07-27

I liked this book. It's concise and well laid out and the exercises reinforce what is read. Unlike so many of it's counterparts, this book is a great intro to the web and the web's use of multimedia components. Strongly recommended for anyone new to web design.

      5 out of 5 stars I liked it!.......2006-07-27

I bought the book as I am just learning web design. I think the book is well laid out, includes lots of basic information (who knew what "http" meant) a good development of skills and really beautiful art work. I would definitely recommend it, especially in a group situation like a class so you can reinforce each other and perhaps fill in each other's blanks.

1 out of 5 stars Not much of an art to this book.......2006-03-21

I am currently using "Exploring the Art and Technology of Web Design" in a community college class. The book is very unclear on instructions. Procedures are unorganized and the order of information is illogical. I would not recommend this book as a text or as a personal reference to anyone.

Funny Ladies is a terrific look at, you guessed it, funny women ranging from radio and silent film stars right up through Absolutely Fabulous and Janeane Garofalo. Each subject gets a brief bio and a discussion of her unique performance style and career highlights. (Be sure to keep a pad and pencil by your side to jot down titles for the inevitable rush to the video store.) Author Stephen M. Silverman is even-handed in his approach, including stand-up comics like Moms Mabley, comic actresses like Madeline Kahn, and actresses who weren't necessarily identified as comediennes but nevertheless turned in brilliant comic performances, like Myrna Loy. Though never a performer, Algonquin wit Dorothy Parker gets her much-deserved due as well. The book is richly punctuated with black-and-white photos, both of the dewily pretty and the appropriately loony varieties. The author explores contrasts--attractive women who play ugly, smart women who play dumb, and sophisticated ladies who enjoy tearing up the joint, but Silverman also has a clear appreciation for women who achieve a perfect realization of their own natural type. Mercifully, Funny Ladies never makes the mistake of psychoanalyzing its subjects, though a certain shared feistiness of spirit is definitely in evidence. Don't worry about this being a gender-centered book (its subjects certainly don't), just get it for anyone who has a good appreciation of crack timing and a well-lobbed pie. --Ali Davis

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating glimpses of funny ladies thru the years.......2007-10-12

What a delightful book! Each short bio contains background and a few anecdotes (often hilarious) about each woman, accompanied by at least one and often several photos. A few entries are simply sidebars, but each is a good intro into that person.

I was particularly interested in the early comediennes, those whose work and lives aren't as familiar to today's audiences. Among these are Mabel Normand, Polly Moran, Minta Dufee, Mare Dressler, Bea Lillie, Margaret Dumont, Jean Arthur, and Gertrude Berg. The author does a good job of picking out highlights from each person's life and career.

The writing style is breezy and subjective (Silverman lets his own opinion, usually favorable, show through and he's obviously a big fan of many of these women).

I loved the book and ended up with a long list of films to rent just to see these women in action.

                  3 out of 5 stars Not a bad book.......2003-10-13

This was basically a paragraph or two of each of the actresses/comediennes the author considers to have been "funny ladies" since the beginning of film. Some of the choices are interesting (Barbara Stanwyck, for example) and there are also the more typical picks - Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, etc.

It's a rather heavy book as well and oversized.
