5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Selection for Serious Photographers.......2002-01-03

Out with the old wives tales and the unproven, anecdotal legends that persist among so many "experts" in the world of photography! Mr. Henry is a retired clinical chemistry researcher who found many of the accepted methods to be unfounded and not actually true when careful, scientific methods were used to verify them. If you are interested in the fine points of darkroom work and in developing a neutral starting point with your own materials, you will find this a valuable read. It's well written, well organized and everything is meticulously documented and verified.

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2001-06-15

This is an amazing book. Richard Henry took a very scientific approach to testing. The book has *real* data about what goes on in B&W processing including fixing and washing. Even if you don't do your own B&W darkroom work this book is well worth reading and with contribute to your understanding of how film and paper work.

            Book Description

Will Lee has returned to his roots to kick off his campaign for the Senate. A prominent lawyer, he has come back to his hometown of Delano, Georgia, to plan his strategies, and to argue an explosively controversial case that could seriously damage his fledgling political career. For Delano is a town with a dark secret -- a smoldering hotbed of racial hatred and moral outrage, held in the thrall of a sinister group called The Elect. Its violent, evil forces will stop at nothing to keep the candidate out of office. But Will Lee isn't about to back down, even though it may cost him his career -- and his life.

You're gonna love this book if you first read CHIEFS. It's a continuation of the Will Lee heritage and an especially enjoyable book. As stated in my review of Woods' book Chiefs, this is a must read as a follow up. You'll truly enjoy it.

            1 out of 5 stars Grass Roots.......2004-08-21

Other reviewers have reported this book as Grisham-like. I agree. The characters are neither developed nor particularly likeable. Reference to the main character's (Will Lee) love interest throughout the book is by first and last name. This is indicative of the real emotional attachment. Stone Barrington isn't the greatest character in crime fiction, but he certainly beats Will Lee.

            3 out of 5 stars Grisham-like Drama with Left-leaning Political Overtones.......2004-06-30

In Grass Root, Woods produces a novel that John Grisham must have taken cues from. While it is nowhere near as good as any Grisham novel, it is a fairly enjoyable read.

We are unfortunately forced to learn too much about Woods' left-leaning politics however. His characterization about republicans and conservatives as described by the senatorial candidate Calhoun is grossly unfair. Depicting Calhoun (the republican candidate) as a KKK-sympathizing fundamentalist religious hypocrite borders on Michael Moore type propaganda. In the novel, Will Lee's campain speach before his rival's church congregation sounds like a replay of a Ted Kennedy tyrade. This story in this novel tends to follow that of the 1986 senate election of Wyche Fowler in Georgia - a career politician who served one term in the senate. The political climate is the same - democrats ruled the roost.

Despite that this novel preceded the Grisham successes, Woods could learn from Grisham's lack of bias and overt political declarations. Grisham's political candidates are rarely identified with parties and his true political leanings are seldom revealed. With Woods, nothing is left to the imagination.

1 out of 5 stars You gotta be kidding!.......2002-02-21

Having an avowed addiction to the "bestseller wall" at the local audio book store, I haven't missed much of Stuart Woods' work. But I could have missed this one. I hate it when fiction writers begin to take themselves so seriously that they use their work to spout their own political and social beliefs, as if we the reader could care. It's o.k. to have some characters believing one way, and some another, that's just good characterization. But in this "Clintonesque Manifesto", all the bad guys are Republicans, or religious, or both, as if those traits alone are villainous. Don't get me wrong. I have no problem if all the bad guys are characterized as Republicans from the "right wing fringe", that's one thing. But if ABSOLUTELY ALL REPULICANS OR CONSERVATIVES, are characterized as right wing extremists who coddle hate groups, kill pro choicers, hate all ethnicities other than white Anglo-Saxon, and are card carrying members of Hillary Clinton's fantasy "Right Wing Conspiracy", then the book becomes less enjoyable, (unless of course you ARE Hillary Clinton), not to mention, more manipulative than a campaign speech.
Continuing his exaggerated characterisations,Woods portrays all of the good guys, the smart guys, the likable guys, including the novel's hero, our old friend, Stone Barrington, as Democrats who hate the death penalty, love abortion, find all people of faith to exhibit hypocrisy and religiosity, (like the bad hair TV evangelists who really are that way) and then purport themselves to be "Moderates". Astonishingly, Woods portrays Stone Barrington as saying that he doesn't know what "family values" are, and pens one of that character's own family to believe that private Christian schools were created by racist Christians who didn't want their children to have to go to school with black children. Preposterous, manipulative garbage.
The plot is weak and thin, having be done scores of times in bad TV movies and weekly dramas. The characters are nothing but engineered stereotypes conjured from a mist of bad research, self delusion and misrepresentation. Woods should go back and read his own prior works featuring Stone Barrington. He might realize he took a good character and superimposed him over a ridiculous one, in a haplessly contrived and much overdone storyline. Now that we know your politics Mr. Woods, go back to writing.....don't give up your day job by running for office through drivel like this.

In this book, Karsten examines the consequences of American military life from the Revolutionary War to the present. Soldiers and Society contains two major sections. A long introduction, containing the author's survey and general conclusions, comprises the first section. The rest of the book is made up of source material--graphs, tables, and first-hand contemporary accounts. Karsten uses statistics extensively for comparative purposes.

                Book Description

The presidential election of 1884, in which Grover Cleveland ended the Democrats' twenty-four-year presidential drought by defeating Republican challenger James G. Blaine, was one of the gaudiest in American history, remembered today less for its political significance than for the mudslinging and slander that characterized the campaign. But a closer look at the infamous election reveals far more complexity than previous stereotypes allowed, argues Mark Summers. Behind all the mud and malarkey, he says, lay a world of issues and consequences.

Summers suggests that both Democrats and Republicans sensed a political system breaking apart, or perhaps a new political order forming, as voters began to drift away from voting by party affiliation toward voting according to a candidate's stand on specific issues. Mudslinging, then, was done not for public entertainment but to tear away or confirm votes that seemed in doubt. Uncovering the issues that really powered the election and stripping away the myths that still surround it, Summers uses the election of 1884 to challenge many of our preconceptions about Gilded Age politics.

4 out of 5 stars How the Republicans lost in 1884.......2005-07-21

This is an extremely insightful examination of the election that first put Grover Cleveland in the White House. The ways in which Summers analyzes the political process remind me of Holt's masterpiece, "The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party". (That is a much more massive book, as it covers a broader topic over a longer period). The use of political cartoons of the period to support the narrative is probably the best I've seen. The style is engaging, although occasionally I think Summers gets slightly carried away. For example, at least one discussion of the standard myths about the period goes on long enough to be somewhat disruptive. Also, while I don't detect any factual bias, there is a tendency to look at things more a Republican perspective. That is, issues (e.g., the role of the minor parties) are more often discussed in terms of problems facing the GOP and how well they did or did not deal with them. The outcome of the election is reported in language that seems rather wistful that Blaine lost. Again, this is only a matter of relative emphasis - there is excellent material on the complex relations between the Democrats at the national and state levels and the rival Democratic machines in New York City. Despite my minor quibbles, I highly recommend this book to anyone with a general interest in American political history, and it certainly must be read by anyone with a particular interest in this period.

                5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-12-21

Anyone interested in politics or American history should love this book. The writing style is crisp and entertaining and the author strikes the right balance between explaining long ago and long forgotten events without drowning the reader in unnecesary details. The 1884 election itself was one of the most interesting of our history with sex scandals, charges of political corruption, party splits, and campaign blunders. The author brings the excitement to life and lets the reader understand not only what happened but why it occured and, even more interesting, what the participants had hoped to accomplish with their political strategies. The book succeeds in describing how late 19th century elections looked and felt to the participants. The human dynamic skillfully set out in this book (the cynical maneuverings, the overheated rhetoric, and the intense partisanship)are very familiar with what we experience in campaigns today-this very familiarity helps make Blaine and Cleveland seem real and not just sterile historical figures. Read this book!

5 out of 5 stars LONG OVERDUE DEPICTION OF A FORGOTTEN PERIOD IN U.S. HISTORY.......2000-11-02

The last half of the 19th century is a period that the historians generally give short shrift to. They dutifully plow through it in the obligatory chapter in their rush to get from the Civil War to Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, and the Progressive Era. The campaign of Grover Cleveland against James Blaine for the presidency in 1884 is just about forgotten. This is too bad because what with the emphasis on character and values (accompanied by some really gross mudslinging), the extensive changes in technology and business, the factionalism and divided government, it was a period much like ours. Summers does an excellent job of dispelling the prevailing view of this period as a doldrum bookended by Lincoln and TR. In a comprehensive yet not overly long book, he shows that substantive issues like the tariff, the relationship of the national government to the states, morality in politics, substance abuse (ie prohibition), and other pressing matters really were at stake, he explores those issues and the men and women who had to face them. This book is one of the best treatments of the 1884 presidential campaign (or any other campaign for that matter) out there. Find a copy of this book and read about a time that is so much like ours.

5 out of 5 stars Mark Summers Makes History Come Alive Again!!!.......2000-09-07

As an undergraduate at the University of Kentucky some years ago, Professor Mark Summers changed my life and I eventually devoted my life to the study of history. His lectures made the past come alive and seem so fresh and real and vital. Anyone who has read any of his books can relate to the sense of excitement that I am describing, and his latest book is no exception. In fact, it is perhaps his best book yet. Lively, fast-paced, yet scholarly and thought-provoking, Summers' book is everything that his readers have come to expect. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in nineteenth-century politics or U.S. history in general, or for those who consider history dry and boring and would like read a book where the past truly does come to life.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Historian Brings An Era to Life.......2000-04-29

Mark Summers is one of the great historians of mid-nineteenth century America. He is fully capable of taking subjects which have seemingly been worked to death and making them fresh with new material and original analysis. Rum Romanism and Rebellion does just that, making Blaine and Cleveland seem more vital and alive than the current occupants of the White House. The issues engage us, the political battle grips us. This is one of the author's best (to my mind, Mr. Summers best work is his two volume work on political corruption [neatly divided between ante-bellum crooks and post-war thieves]; let's hope that Mr. Summers has a trilogy in mind and next turns his attention to wartime corruption: from the transcontinental railroad to the supply of Union soldiers and the appointment of generals, that era was rife with corruption, yet very little has ever been written about it). Well done, Mr. Summers!

                Book Description

A new kind of Christianity is emerging at the grass roots. Full of heart-felt expression, artistic creativity, and liberal social values, progressive churches and small Christian communities have established themselves across the denominational spectrum. Reporting on a national research study that undercuts the impression that right-wing Christianity is the only new development on the contemporary American religious landscape, Hal Taussig identifies thousands of progressive churches and para-churches and describes five characteristics of this new movement. He then proceeds to analyze its blind spots, project its future, and suggest how to start a progressive church.

I can have nothing but priase for this book, until he implicitly suggests that down the road, all progressive Christians get together in one denomination with a "right theology." He does not accept people with conservative theologies. To me he is not inclusive of these Christians. Otherwise I find what he says is right on. Taussig has focussed on a very important trend in christianity, presented how valuable it is, and still did not offer too much hope of a quick and massive adoption. It will take intellectually alive people to join this development. His characterization of these people and their churches a clear and highly useful summary that includes terminogy such as "intellectual integrity" by which he means that intellectual progress makes a difference in the concept of God that believers can accept. His emphasis on being inclusive of a wide diversity of personal beliefs and life styles hits the crux of the problem that vexes mainline denominations for which that he gives data to describe their continuing decline.
I found the first half of the book to be fascinating while the later parts were less stimulating. On the whole, however, I rate the book as an valuable treatise on develops within 21st-century christianity. Whether you agree with him or not, you are well advised to listen to what he has to say and re-consider your theological position and analyze the practices ot your own faith community. It is vitally important that young people who are tempted to throw over christianity as they learn about science to read this book carefully. It is for this reason that the book struck such a strong affinity with me. I've wrestled with these issues all my life and written about them in my own book.

                      Book Description

This book examines the successful organizing and mobilization activities of urban poor women for social change and how they struggled to convince the larger society of the legitimacy of their cause. Challenging traditional views of poverty, women on welfare began demanding structural changes in the institution of social welfare in this country, but lacking the support of others their efforts were unsuccessful. To explore this issue an analysis is made of the Brooklyn Welfare Action Council (B-WAC), a grassroots cooperative established in 1967 and disbanded in 1973. Its purpose was to obtain social and economic benefits for its members through the promotion of changes within the system. The Brooklyn Council distinguished itself by being the sole welfare rights group controlled by and addressing the needs of the recipients. Demonstrations at welfare centers, disruptions at a major store as well as selling their blood are among the activities presented in sensitive, poignant, even humorous style. Taking large bites of the bureaucracy that fed them, for a time, recipients held hostage one of the most powerful agencies in the nation. The author employs an historical approach to chronicle the welfare recipients' activities, analyze their strategies and examine B-WAC's weaknesses and strengths. Social scientists, activists, and social and program planners will find this a particularly timely book written from the perspective of an urban planner who was herself personally involved in the 1960's welfare rights movement and in this unique grassroots organization.

5 out of 5 stars On why we should eat bison instead of cattle........2007-08-09

Paul really outlines in alternating chapters the demise of the heartland's habitats for birds, grasses, and grazing herbivores that once dominated the scene. He explains some of the keys in this transformation, beginning with how we farm and how we farm. Ultimately though, he offers solutions and provides some hope that habitats for prairie animals and the prairies themselves could all return if our culture chose to eat Bison meat instead of cows. I read this when it was published many years ago and haven't for one day forgotten the lessons he taught me.

On alternate chapters there is story about him returning to his roots, which is nice to space out the heaviness of the serious chapters. This part of the story I can still remember a little about, but it's not the crux of the book, just Paul's style.
