Hey, the 70s and 80s are over..........1998-03-14
No question about, when Paul Rand (and others)made the different logos that are in book, it worked like a charm. For the 70s and 80s, that is. There are lessons to be learned but the book feels stuck in the timeperiod 1970-80. So before buying it you should check it out first.
Remind yourself why you became a designer!.......1998-02-19
This book is a wonderful source of inspiration, worth owning for the essay "Good Design is Goodwill" alone. The text appears at first to be slight, but will leave your psyche feeling nourished; Rand's writing style was very much like his graphic style: it's economical, but every word is perfectly chosen and placed.

Good Idea, Didn't Work For Me.......2007-04-10
Since I'm getting married in May, I was really exicted to see this book. It seemed like the perfect idea for my flower girl - a memory book and a 'what to expect' book. And it is a nice book, with beautiful pictures. However, after seeing the book in stores (and thus able to see the full content) I decided not to buy it.
Why? Because some of the text was very specific to the flower girl duties, etc. and it wasn't what was happening in my wedding. My flower girl will not be scattering petals, and I didn't want to create false expectations.
And while the photographs were pretty, they weren't of the wedding she was going to be in - yes there was space to put photos of her in it, but it didn't feel as personal.
I decided to go and make her a personalized flower girl memory book - using a photo album with drop in pages. Some of the pages will be pre-made by me, about what to expect in the wedding, about going to find her dress, about the special signifigance her basket holds (Its the basket I carried in her grandmother's wedding), etc. Other pages will be blank so she and her mom can create them together.
The book of memories is a great idea, it just wasn't meeting my needs.
Great book!.......2007-01-06
I bought this book for my 7 year old flower girl and she loved it! It's a pseudo-scrap book for the flower girl and it focuses on their role in the wedding. Extremely age appropriate. I would not recommend it for any girl under the age of six.
When I was a Flower Girl.......2006-03-27
This book is a wonderful gift idea for a flower girl. It explains everything about the wedding and everyone in the wedding while providing space for you to write and add pictures. The flower girl can also add her own input and pictures.
When I Was a Flower Girl.......2006-03-23
This is a beautiful momento for any flower girl! Mine absolutely were so excited to fill in the pages, save the petals, etc. It's a wonderful way to personalize this very special experience in a little girl's life.
A fun book.......2006-03-18
This was bought by my fiancee. I have little to do with the planning of the wedding so I haven't seen the book, but she seems to like. She says it is fun.

Book Description
This illustrated story follows the memory of an old woman as she reveals her past dreams, uncovering the commonality of young girls' thoughts and blurring the line between fantasy and reality. She is seen painting in Paris, visiting the Seven Wonders of the World while floating through the air in a hot-air balloon, living in a castle surrounded by a moat, and being the archaeologist to uncover the tomb of the five kings. As the dream-telling draws to a close, the reader sees the woman surrounded by mementos of all her adventures, bringing to question whether or not those dreams came true, but leaving no doubt that the woman still dreams.

When I was a Girl, I Dreamed..........2006-04-07
What a fantastic book! I purchased, "When I was a Girl, I Dreamed..." to read and donate to my daughter's 2nd grade class. The children were ohhhing and ahhhing about the "dreams" as well as the beautiful illustrations. They were all intrigued. Even the boys were not disappointed. When I finished reading, the children were all asking to be the first to borrow the book from the school's library.
Beautiful Book.......2005-10-23
Beautifully written, wonderously illustrated, this is a great book for girls of all ages.....It breakdowns the stereotypes of what a girl can't do...a perfect Christmas present for my 3 nieces in San Francisco!
Book Description
The New York Times said that Mary Cantwell, in telling the story of her life, "Makes you discover yourself." Now, gathered in a single volume, are her three beautifully etched, unflinchingly honest memoirs. Cantwell's first book, American Girl, evoked the delights of her youth in a small New England town; her second, Manhattan, When I Was Young, told of her blossoming career in New York, her marriage and her children, and that marriage's decline. Speaking with Strangers finds Cantwell alone, a single mother struggling in the big city, bereft of her husband but bolstered by friends, thriving in her career yet personally troubled. With a sensibility as distinct as the city she calls home, Cantwell's autobiographical trilogy brilliantly captures her struggle to forge a life with one foot in her past and the other, warily, in her present.
"Cantwell writes with breathless intensity." --People
"As in the best of memoirs, the place is a character in the play, and Cantwell's courage as a wife and working mother also has a life and inspiration of its own."--Los Angeles Times

A Classic Memoir.......2005-04-27
Mary Cantwell's Manhattan Memoir is three books in one but you will never tell the difference. The stories flow together as Cantwell's memoir's cover her life. Cantwell takes you through a stroll in Manhattan. The good times, the struggles. The best memoir I have read. This is that book you will tell all of your friends about. Cantwell is a fantastic story teller.
Wonderful prose and a fascinating story.......2002-02-25
The other reviews told what the book was about. I just wanted to add to their comments by saying that I couldn't put the book down and was sad when it ended. Her words flowed so beautifully.
Delightful, Engaging and Unflinchingly Honest.......2002-02-06
Mary Cantwell bares her triumphs and joys as well as her shortcomings and insecurities in this collection of three memoirs that span her childhood, early adulthood, and middle- to late-adulthood respectively. Cantwell lead a wonderful, if unremarkable, childhood in an enviably Rockwell-esque seaside town - her depiction of her life through high-school is a real joy to read. Upon graduation from college, Cantwell hits the "Big City" appears to have forgotten some of the lessons learned in her idyllic childhood, however, she still manages to snag a plumb job with Mademoiselle Magazine and occasionally interacts with literary legends with her ambitious young husband. In her later life she is given interesting writing assignments and carves out a life for herself in Lower Manhattan, however, I found it discouraging that she wallows in the collapse of her marriage (which never appeared to be very strong), often to the detriment of her two daughters. I kept wondering how a woman with such a strong background could have allowed herself to sink to the depths Cantwell periodically allowed herself to hit. Regardless, she is not ashamed to remember less-than-glamorous moments in her life (which also include being jeered by fellow classmates as an elementary school student and suffering from paralyzing fits of self-doubt as a young career woman) - these are the events that have made her what she is.
It must have been incredibly therapeutic for Cantwell to write these memoirs. All three books can be seen as a view of the author's life from within her own head. Her message is simple: accept me for what I am. "Manhattan Memoir," in addition to being the story of Mary Cantwell's life, it also about trying to be true to oneself when one isn't always sure what that means. By writing her story, Cantwell examines her life and tries to learn from her experiences - and it can make the reader start to think about his/her own life as well.
While Cantwell's life is not particularly fascinating or different in itself, her writing style and manner of portraying her experiences are magical and riveting. She describes the joyous and painful events of her life in an easy, engaging manner - it is as if she is talking about the past with old friends. She manages to make the mundane fascinating. She also has a real gift for engaging the reader. I wasn't sure if I liked her writing style at first - Cantwell writes almost as one speaks - but within pages of beginning the book I became used to her rambling style and truly enjoyed it.
This book provides an added plus for those from or familiar with Rhode Island and/or New York City. It was fun for me to recognize the addresses of Cantwell's Manhattan apartments and know that the places she frequented, I often go to today.
A delightful walk through time.......2000-07-23
The late Mary Cantwell charmingly recounts, in this 3 books in one volume paperback, her years growing up in a small New England seaport town and her youthful foray into the 'glamourous' magazine world of New York City in the 'fities. Sane, sensible and warm nostalgia--without being saccharine. Beautifully written. A must for the literate and for New York lovers-- especially those who remember the days!

Book Description
From Hilary Knight, co-creator of the ever-popular Eloise series, and Charlotte Zolotow, a Caldecott Award-winning author, these two masterpieces of children's literature are relaunched in an unusual 2-in-1 flip-flop edition. Now, they appear for the first time in full color with water colors hand-applied to the original drawings by Hilary Knight himself.
In When I Have a Little Girl, a little girl (reminiscent of the irrepressible Eloise) daydreams about when she will have a child of her own. She fantasizes that her daughter will be allowed to do all the things that she could never do. Like wearing a party dress to school every day. Or having a bath only once a week.
In When I Have a Little Boy, a little boy imagines how he would behave if he had himself as a father. He gets away with a good deal more than he ever has. He stays up late to hobnob with the adults at his parents' parties. He eats ice cream sundaes all the time and sleeps in the yard whenever he wants.
Intended to be read by parents and children together, both stories hold a tender message both about being a child and having a child of one's own.

I looked for this book for years now that I am that mother with a little girl. This is a charming story about a little girl who doesn't like her mother's rules, so she tells her mother (and all who will listen!) about how it will be when SHE is the mother. You can imagine the list...
For any princess or former princess who wanted chocolate ice cream for breakfast, this is your book! I'm almost forty, but remember it so clearly. I can't wait for my daughter to read it to hers some day!!!

Ms Macdonald gives Universal life to the Scottish woman.......1998-08-11
I found this book years ago in London and every person whose hands I have placed it in has returned it to me with a mischevious light in their eyes. Ms Macdonald is truly one of the greatest contemporary playwrights, both for women and for Scotland. Each of these four very different scripts provides a rich dialect and dialogue, embracing Scottish culture and revealing it in its naked honesty. A portrayal of women of every age, from the single mother to the hovering grandma, from the brutally truthful child to the impetuous, rebelling teenager. Each story is humorous and cruel; my heart breaks with understanding as Morag tells her only daughter that she hates her, and loves her in practically the same moment. I cannot conceive of how Ms Macdonald has managed to capture the words which express so perfectly a kind of pain that all women deal with - and I must add here that the men in her plays are just as powerful. These scripts provide a richness of modern Scottis! h life and the women, the families, the people who struggle to survive and discover what "it all" really means. If you have found your way to this review please do yourself a favor and read Sharman. She'll say it like you've never heard it before - think Career Girls or Secrets and Lies (Mike Leigh). If you are an actor you will find her plays to be a terrific fountain of material; if you are a woman, I can bet you won't find many stories that strike closer to the soul.

A heartwarming and gentle story that ultimately reassures the strength of family bonds........2007-09-07
When-I-was-a-little-girl is a whimsical children's picturebook about how memories can sometimes change with perspective. Young Lisabeth tries to be a good girl, but it seems she is always "to messy" or "too picky" compared to the translucent, ghostlike figure of When-I-was-a-little-girl that Lisabeth's mother regularly invokes. Lisabeth is in a pickle - until Grandma comes to visit! Grandma remembers When-I-was-a-little-girl in a very different way; indeed, When-I-was-a-little-girl and Lisabeth are quite alike after all! A heartwarming and gentle story that ultimately reassures the strength of family bonds.
A Mother and Daughter story you'll relate to!.......2003-02-25
My almost 5 year old daughter picked this one out of the library - and what a great find! Here is a synopsis of the story;
"Lisabeth's mother constantly tells her about the perfect child she used to be. But one awful day, when there is liver and onions and no dessert for dinner, Wheniwasalittlegirl actually appears. She's "all neat and tidy, with that I'm-so-perfect smile on her face." Not only that, but she loves liver and onions.... How will Lisabeth manage to get rid of this obnoxious visitor?"
My girls now want to know if "wheniwasalittlegirl" can come to our house - they have been cleaning their bedroom & toyroom in preparation for her visit!!!
Book Description
Combining her passion for prayer with her love for little ones, beloved writer and speaker Stormie Omartian teams with talented illustrator Shari Warren to share an important message: “It’s never too early to teach a child to pray.”
Stormie encourages children to develop the life–changing practices of talking to God every day and explains prayer in easy–to–understand ways. With examples taken directly from the lives of young boys and girls, she helps kids get to know God, thank Him for His love and care, and ask for His help in tough times. Stormie also touches upon forgiveness, the power of praying with others, and having a relationship with Jesus as she assures children that their prayers do make a difference.
Bright, contemporary watercolors depicting a broad spectrum of children accompany the text to present a beautiful picture of growing closer to God in prayer. For children ages 3 to 7.
Customer Reviews:
"It's never too soon to teach a child to pray.".......2007-09-07
What Happens When I Talk to God?: The Power of Prayer for Boys and Girls is a picturebook for Christian children created according to the precept "It's never too soon to teach a child to pray." What Happens When I Talk to God? discusses the importance of using prayer to thank God for His bounty, and how God always watches over all His children. "My favorite thing about talking to God is that I can talk to Him about anything. God wants me to tell Him about the things that matter to me. That's because anything I care about, He cares about too. Whatever is important to me is also important to God. I say, 'Thank You, God, that You are my friend and I can tell You everything.'" The gentle, friendly illustrations of children of a diversity of races praying to God adds this perfect visual touch to this picturebook, highly recommend for Christian parents to share with young children.
Another great "add" to the series.......2007-06-20
Stormie Omartian is best known for her The Power of a Praying books. More than 10 million copies have been sold. The titles include The Power of a Praying Kid, The Power of a Praying Teen and The Power of a Praying Parent.
In What Happens When I Talk to God? Omartian takes her passion for prayer and shares the message that "It's never too early to teach a child to pray."
Aimed at ages 3-7, Omartian helps children understand the importance of prayer, what prayer is, why God wants them to pray, when they should pray and what they should pray about. Children learn that God loves them and that's why they should pray. And they can pray anytime and anywhere for anything. The book encourages children to be young `prayer warriors' and affirms a child's importance in God's eyes.
What Happens When I Talk to God is a book for adults to read with their children. The narrative may be a bit long for three-year-old children, but they'll absorb what their particular attention span allows.
The artwork, by Shari Warren is bright, colorful, inviting and attractive. The best part of the illustrations is the children themselves. They are from every race and as the mother and grandmother of a racially mixed family, I applaud this aspect of the book.
Armchair Interviews says: The Power of Prayer for Boys and Girls is enhanced with Stormie Omartian's book, What Happens When I Talk to God?
