A significant contribution to political ecology, Conservation Is Our Government Now is an ethnographic examination of the history and social effects of conservation and development efforts in Papua New Guinea. Drawing on extensive fieldwork conducted over a period of seven years, Paige West focuses on the Crater Mountain Wildlife Management Area, the site of a biodiversity conservation project implemented between 1994 and 1999. She describes the interactions between those who ran the program—mostly ngo workers—and the Gimi people who live in the forests surrounding Crater Mountain. West shows that throughout the project there was a profound disconnect between the goals of the two groups. The ngo workers thought that they would encourage conservation and cultivate development by teaching Gimi to value biodiversity as an economic resource. The villagers expected that in exchange for the land, labor, food, and friendship they offered the conservation workers, they would receive benefits, such as medicine and technology. In the end, the divergent nature of each group’s expectations led to disappointment for both.
West reveals how every aspect of the Crater Mountain Wildlife Management Area—including ideas of space, place, environment, and society—was socially produced, created by changing configurations of ideas, actions, and material relations not only in Papua New Guinea but also in other locations around the world. Complicating many of the assumptions about nature, culture, and development underlying contemporary conservation efforts, Conservation Is Our Government Now demonstrates the unique capacity of ethnography to illuminate the relationship between the global and the local, between transnational processes and individual lives.

The relative importance of East Asia.......2006-05-20
For many years, Dr. McEvedy has been producing succinct analyses of mankind's achievements, combining wit and devastating attacks on the post-modern academic establishment.
But for some time, he left himself open to one major criticism: why deal with the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and even Africa, while relegating East Asia by implication to a historical backwater? In this book, he has convincingly rebutted his critcs.
Naturally, there will be partisans who find McEvedy's Euro-centric view of the world distasteful. To quote from an earlier work, "Asia is [rightly} considered only as a stage on which the European struts... this... needs no justification".
But here he has shown he is no mindless neo-con or jingo: he is simply not prepared to whitewash inconvenient facts, such as the smug and self-defeating attitude of the Ming and Ching rulers of China, or the fact that Japan only acquired real historical significance with the Meiji Restoration.
This is a book which will withstand the tests of time. It is brightened by the author's usual lively wit and extraordinary gift for relating maps to prose.
Rounding Out History.......2005-09-14
I am very interested in history and particulary fond of historical atlases. I own several by Colin McEvedy: The Atlases of Ancient History to Recent History, the Historical Atlas of Africa and that of North America. I particularly enjoy his witty incisive view of history. This particular atlas fills in my knowledge gap about the Pacific area. It was particulary fascinating to view the maps and read the history of this area, to find out how the "other half" of the world has been doing.
Good but not the best in the series........2005-06-21
Following from the excellent, entertaining and informative series of Penguin maps on Europe (Ancient, Middle ages, Modern, Recent Histories) this book attempts to show 10000 years of history in the Pacific in 100 pages using the same geographical map (of the entire Pacific rim), showing the rise and fall of cultures, civilisations and other relevant events in the history of the region.
Unfortunately, in this case it does not work so well with reading of the book a little disjointed and less absorbing that others in the series. There are two reasons why I think this is so :
1) The time frame is just too large - too much happens in 10,000 years to be described in enough detail in a book like this, and we end up with lots of details for some events (e.g. America vs. Japan in WWII, European exploration of Pacific 16th->18th centuries) and not so much on others (e.g. mass migration of Chinese to SE Asia in 19th century).
2) The geographical area covered (all the pacific rim) is just too big and in some parts just too plain empty. Further, some of the most interesting events are just outside this map and so are just shown on the periphery or get missed out, e.g. the rise and fall of various Chinese dynasties and the Russian conquest on Siberia all appear on the very periphery of the maps but the Galapagos and Easter islands are all that really exist in the SE Pacific and don't really have a lot of history but still are shown on every page.
Maybe these are just limitations of the rules of these books (i.e. to use the same map) but maybe a map of Asian history would be a good complement to it.
Despite this though, it still is a good read. Mr Mcevendy has a clever ability to describe a whole era of history in a single paragraph. And finally, as with his other books, within the text there is often some very funny lines which will keep readers amused, e.g. on the extinction of native species with the arrival of man "... the moa's problem was having had to too easy over the subsequent 150 million years : no enemies, no sense of danger, no moa".
Keep an eye out for bias and inaccuracies.......2004-03-21
The four parts of this book's contents gives a good indication of what you will find: Part 1, Setting the Scene [31 of the 120 pages to cover the period from 28 Million Years Ago until AD 1513]; Part 2. The Ocean Defined [by the Spaniards, English, Dutch, etc., of course]; Part 3. From Cook to Perry [need I say more]; and, finally, Modern Times [pp. 79-112, including much detail about WWII].
On the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the author states: ". . .as is often the case in Japan, things were not as they seemed. For instance, the idea that power was being restored to the emperor was simply humbug; the monarchy remained, as it always had been, purely ceremonial. For another, the new government was searching for a consenses and soon found it; top priority,it announced, would go to strengthening the armed forces. In a society that took great pride in its warrior caste, this was not a policy anyone could oppose. . ." And so on.
If the reader is content to understand the history of Japan simply as a series of Mifune films, topped off by "The Last Samurai", this may be the book for you. Otherwise, you will recall that the monarchy was very much in control of the government at least from the days of Prince Shotoku (d. 622) until the Gempei War (1180-85). . . He/she will also recall that the samurai class lost its political and social position from the very beginning of the Meiji Restoration. Was this a "society that took great pride in its warrior caste," or was it a society that was "opened" in 1853 with Commodore Perry's guns trained on the capital, a society quite aware of how Europe (including England) and America were on a rampage to colonize the entire world, that it might bestow upon it the blessings of democracy and Christianity? What would you do if you were a Japanese in 1868?
On the issue of inaccuracy, let me cite at least one, including one of the author's remarks that some might mistakenly consider amusing: "The Japanese script, on the other hand, though it looks similar to Chinese, was, from the start, an instrument for writing Japanese. There are several variants, which were combined with Chinese characters to produce the wildly complicated, often ambiguous hotch-potch that has proved so perfect a match for the Japanese psyche." (p. 23)
Where does one begin to address such a confused -- and bigoted -- statement? The earliest extant document in Japanese, the Kojiki (ca. 712), for the most part used Chinese characters for their PHONETIC value to convey Japanese sounds. The Nihon shoki (720), on the other hand, was written by Japanese IN CHINESE. Eventually, the Japanese developed two parallel syllabaries (kana) -- hiragana and katakana -- to complement the use of Chinese used SEMANTICALLY, for their meaning. . . The chart on p. 23 is also misleading. The Korean column contains standard Chinese characters but should probably display the Hankul script developed by the Koreans; and the "Japanese" column is, at best, some example of specialized writing style that to most Japanese today would be simply unreadable. Ask one.
For a good book on the issues, see Peter T. Daniels and William Bright, "The World's Writing Systems," New York and Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1996. 922 pages.
A scolarly and readable overview.......1998-11-17
Mcevedy's achievement is to take a broad sweep of history spanning several millenia and present it in a form which is clear, scholarly and readily comprehensible to the layman. His prose style is entertaining and the text is amply complemented by the adjoining maps. It is possible to follow the historical narrative and place it in a geographical context which would normally elude the lay reader. I found this to be an excellent and most entertaining book, as good as if not better than his previous work.

THIS BOOK IS TOO LONG!.......2001-08-13
Everything about Australia's fire history from its geologic origins to the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires can be found in this book. Perhaps a little too much. We learn about everything from the Flora and Fauna of the continent, to aboriginal fire practices, to modern fire fighting techniques. If one wishes to know about all of this, then the Burning Bush is an indespensible source. For those with more narrow interests, be weary. I bought the book to learn about the major fires that have devastated the country periodically. The accounts are there, but the first one appeared 220 pages into the book! All of the accounts combined cover only around twenty pages. Readers with similar interests will find the book to be a 400 page yawn. Pyne would have been better served to narrow his focus a bit. It's all there, but more than most other books the reader will want to refer to the index rather than slog through each page.

The best reference for RCM.......2007-01-23
I have been working in the field of RCM since 1991. During that time I have read most of the texts in the marketplace on the subject as well as having worked in a range of countries and industries using a range of different methods.
Johns book is unique in that it is set in the context of asset maintenance as a managerial discipline of growing strategic significance. His vast knowledge, coupled with the vast knowledge and resources of his network of RCM practitioners, have combined to make this the finest text on RCM that has been produced to date.
If you want to get to know a little about RCM, understand how it is applied, and understand some of the techniques and principles that make up this area of expertise, then there is no better book in todays marketplace. I still carry a copy with me today on most jobs I undertake.
Written in laymans terms Johns' book is the most read book on the subject, and remains the standard by which others are measured. Don't waste your time elsewhere.
Helpful source; good start for anyone........2006-01-05
I purchased this book for a course that used it for a reference.
Overall it contains good information and provides understanding towards the concepts of RCM. I have a background in maintenance already and didn't have too hard of a time understanding the content; class helped, too. I noticed that some of the concepts and approaches to RCM were so simple in idea, that they are easily overlooked. It can add to your arsenal of tools that can help you do your job better and more efficiently. Overall the wording is understandable and isn't boring. Basically, I would say this book is suitable for someone in their 2nd-4th year in industrial maintenance desiring to be a planner or maint. manager position.
I enjoyed it because it opened my eyes to new ideas and exposed misconceptions about old RCM tactics that are inefficient.
Not a text, an advertisement.......2003-04-03
...this book is not a great maintenance text.
Rather, it's a sales pitch for a program. The program is fine on its own merit, but the book is not worthy of purchase. All lessons of the book (minus the child-like uptime calculus) can be summarized in the statement:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it -- and if it's cheap to replace, don't maintain it."
That's the summary.

This book is the definitive textbook on RCM, the result of the accumulated experience of thousands of RCM reviews in nearly every industry and in dozens of countries around the world.
It presents RCM's distinctive "systems" approach to maintenance, offering sophisticated criteria for deciding among four kinds of scheduled tasks (not simply the replacement of individual non-repairable components), and equally sophisticated criteria for deciding among two other kinds of failure management policies (including redesign) if scheduled tasks are not appropriate.

Transform Maintenance at your Plant or Facility.......2006-04-15
RCM or Reliability Centered Maintenance is a great method for determining the right maintenance work to ensure asset function. It changed maintenance thinking from "fix it" to "maintain function" and avoid breakdown to begin with. It has been almost 30 years since Nowlan and Heap's original report on Reliability Centered Maintenance and yet - confusion and mystery still abound. Many RCM projects fail to realize the improvements that are desired at the outset.
The new book by Neil Bloom peals away the layers of fog the suround RCM and provides a clear way forward for anyone interested in improving reliability. Even small and midsize plants and facilities can take the information provided by "RCM - Implementation Made Simple" and begin to perform Reliability Centered Maintenance to improve plant performance.
I manage a community of over 55,000 maintenance and reliability professionals and I am recommending the each and every person read this book! Seasoned RCM experts along with people who are brand new to the concept will find things they can put to immediate use.

Great book on creating The Reliability Program for your plant.......2006-03-24
I am a Reliability Engineering Coordinator at a chemicals plant. I have worked in Design and Manufacturing, Smelting, and Mining. I started my career as a junior design engineer, rising to a senior reliability engineer, and finally a Reliability Engineering Coordinator.
At previous employers I performed RCM exercises with great results, but this required enormous amounts of personal energy and time. In my current role I have already started using the language in this book to build greater support for the RCM processes amongst management, operations, engineering, and the critical frontline tradesmen and operators. The response has been nothing short of amazing.
The RCM processes described by Neil are not only powerful at aiding people in the understanding of true RCM, but the simplicity allows for quick progression through an RCM project. This book is a must read for any organization considering RCM.
I have recommended this book to my peers at my current employer and past employers and I would recommend it to any other maintenance and reliability professional.
Great book on a misunderstood subject.......2006-02-18
I have worked in the maintenance business for 37 years. This is the first book I have read that addresses the age old problem of PM's on equipment in a clear cut and easy manner. In the industry we end up either performingpreventivemaintenance too often or not enough and often times not on
critical components. This book is a must read for anyone that is developing a PM program or looking to enhance their present program. By performing preventive maintenance on the RIGHT equipment and at the RIGHT time companies can realize greater efficiency and profits.

Smith's book reflects a solidly based practical approach plus interesting insights eg the handling of parallel redundant systems. Having my practised RCM for a number of years internationally I would recommended Smith to anyone interested in the subject, or about to undertake any RCM work.

This research report assessed how water utilities could apply Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) to new and existing infrastructure and evaluated the costs and benefits of such programs. RCM components were identified as well as how utility maintenance programs are currently developed and how such a program would be implemented. RCM pilot projects were completed with the Denver Water Board and Veolia Water Indianapolis. Costs and benefits are presented along with implementation procedures and Change Management recommendations. Includes CD.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examined the application of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) in the acquisition of the Marine Corps' Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) . RCM is referred to throughout various service and DoD wide references, but in the absence of specific guidance on how to apply RCM to an acquisition, the AAAV program provided a unique opportunity to analyze key decisions and results. The research included an examination of the RCM process to include RCM training provided on site at the AAAV program, a review of pertinent program documents, interviews with program representatives, and an analysis of the critical decision to utilize the RCM process. The key findings of the research effort concluded that when RCM is applied to an acquisition with program commitment, the program will gain a greater, more focused understanding of the system and subsystems, than with the traditional Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) . AAAV also demonstrated that RCM benefits were broad and not limited to just maintenance analysis and that these benefits could be gained at any stage of the acquisition. This thesis concludes by recommending that the acquisition community recognize the benefits and institutionalize RCM into the acquisition process.
