The middle school-aged children I've shared this with enjoy the story. It inspires many good questions and comments from them.

This literary piece is well written with the exquisite paintings that amplify the story over all. To have the visual images interact with the writing so well, I have to wonder how such an artist would only have illustrated a few books. A must read and a visual pleaser to the afficianados of art. Irving Toddy is a fine artist whose work should be sought out more. Eve Bunting is a good writer whose work is always complemented by the illustrator. In this case, to have a Native American-Navajo illustrate and to have lived the characters experiences is great.

I teach reading and language classes. This book is an excellent resource to encourage reading, to introduce new language, and to increase my students knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

People familiar with studies of the Plains Indians and their culture already know that this is the defininitive book on the Cheyennes. The details of their history, culture, and religion are fascinating. However, those just beginning to dabble in this area of study should be warned, it may be more than they are looking for right now. For example, the alliances and warfare between the Cheyenne and other tribes would be very difficult to follow if you didn't already know a little bit about who they were and how their migratory paths crossed, etc. Once you've done a fair amount of study on the subject, however, your library will not be complete without it.

      Book Description

This book provides a history and ethnography of the Cheyenne people from their prehistoric origins north of the Great Lakes to their present life in the reservations in Oklahoma. It is based on archaeological material, historical and linguistic evidence and draws vividly on the oral traditions of the Cheyenne themselves. After an investigation of Cheyenne origins, the author describes their settlement, around 500 BC on the plains of North Dakota. Here they hunted buffalo and antelope on foot, and gradually developed the means to cultivate the often arid ground. In a reverse of the typical European pattern, the reintroduction of the horse in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries allowed the Cheyenne to revert from settled horticultural communities to nomadic hunters across the American mid-west. The author describes the early French and British contacts with the Cheyenne and the beginnings of trade and Indian-settler politics. Early contacts were largely peaceful, and it was not until after Independence and when the Cheyenne became involved in the intricacies of the Civil War that full scale conflict broke out between them and the US Federal Army. The tragic massacre of Cheyenne women and children at Sand Creek was avenged two decades later at the Battle of Little Big Horn - but the scale and swiftness of Federal retaliation served ultimately to accelerate the driving of the Cheyenne from their traditional lands to reservations in the south. The author provides a detailed account of reservation life and shows how the dance ceremonies and oral traditions have largely survived the Cheyenne's enforced removal from their long-held homelands. He concludes with a critical examination of contemporary Cheyenne life and of the mixed results of the often inept intrusions of State and Federal bureaucracies. This is a vivid and readable history and ethnography of one of the most prominent of the American Indian peoples.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2005-07-13

This is probably the best book I have read from the series "The Peoples Of America". It is a wonderful blend of Anthropology, History, and Sociology. Definitely worth reading if you have an interest in the Cheyenne, or Native Americans in general.

John H. Moore spent a great deal of time with the Cheyenne, and clearly has a great deal of respect for the people and the culture. Some of the stories he relates are very amusing, in particular where he discusses the portrayal in the movies and the actual dialogue spoken in "A Man Called Horse", and his story of The Wreck of the Cattle Truck are a real treat. Some of the stories are sad as well. It is his great gift to use the stories of his time with the Cheyenne to illustrate his points, and really make the reader feel as if they know this people.

        Book Description

Only six Cheyenne Indians (but thirty-two Sioux) died in the fighting at the Little Bighorn River that wiped out the command of General George Custer. Brave Wolf, the son of the prophet Old Brave Wolf, later recalled the courage of the doomed men in the Seventh Cavalry. He was at the scene on that bloodiest of Sundays in the summer of 1876.
Brave Wolf and twelve other members of his tribe tell what happened in Cheyenne Memories of the Custer Fight, compiled and edited by Richard G. Hardorff. Between 1895 and 1908 naturalist George Bird Grinnell talked with Brave Wolf, American Horse, and other combatants at the Little Bighorn. Researcher Walter Mason Camp sought out Tall Bull, Bull Hump, and Little Wolf, whose voices are added to these pages. Casting light on events is the skilled Cheyenne interpreter Long Forehead, also known as Willis Rowland. Tribal historian John Stands in Timber, who gathered material from Cheyenne elders, describes the movements of Custer and his soldiers. Hamlin Garland’s interview with Two Moons recreates the noise and dust and smoke and frenzied confusion at the Little Bighorn.

3 out of 5 stars rehash of the camp interviews.......1999-09-29

Hardorff writes well but its an awful waste of time to put out two small books, one for the Dakota and one for the Cheyenne which are essentially reprints of the Camp interviews. It is nice to have these interviews available but you can order Camp direct. This particular book I thought was flawed because it starts with American Horse who by all other accounts (but his own) was not in the Little Bighorn Fight.

          Book Description

Traditionally historians of the Little Big Horn fight have focused on Custer and his troops—on what they were doing and where they died. But as one Miniconjou warrior told a gathering at a 1926 commemoration of the battle, the Lakotas and Cheyennes also lost brave men. These men had died defending their homes and families, and they too deserved recognition.

Hokahey! A Good Day to Die! details the final moments of each of the fallen Cheyenne and Lakota heroes. Richard G. Hardorff sifted through the many interviews with Indian survivors of the battle, cross-checking every story of a wounded or dead individual to ascertain who was killed, in which action, and by whom. He concludes that the Indian dead comprised thirty-one men, six women, and four children—astonishingly light losses when compared with the number of cavalry dead. Concise, well-written, and respectful of Cheyenne and Lakota cultural practices, this book is an essential contribution to our understanding of how the Cheyennes and Lakotas waged the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Almost Like Gray, but not Quite.......2005-08-24

The old story is quickly retold using Indian witnesses to flesh out some specific who shot whom, threading the Red man's perspectives, and recollections with the often-quoted white man's. He disputes Marquis's mass suicide theories, citing contrary statements given Marquis, by his same sources. Hardorff takes a page from Gray, compiling charts of Indian casualties with witness lists, and tribal affiliations. However, it was at least 20 years after the battle before any of the Indian casualty lists were compiled. In the final table, I noticed that later interviews reported lower and lower average casualty numbers. It left me with the feeling that we still do not have a definitive picture of the Indian losses. I admire the hard work that went into this book, and can recommend it to serious Custerphiles.
